MEDINA — A. James “Red” Hobbs, of Gasport, an avid farmer, hunter and fisherman, age 81 years, left us too soon on Saturday, May 1, 2010, in Medina Memorial Hospital, after a short, courageous battle with cancer.

Red was born January 1, 1929, the son of the late Evelyn (Behe) and George Hobbs. He was also the step-son of the late Charles “Sam” Sims.

Red leaves behind his beloved wife, Marcia (nee Cady); his loving children, Dr. Sheila (Joe) DeWitt of Auburn, NH, Sandy (Edward) Kress and Randy Hobbs, all of Gasport. Red is also survived by his precious grandchildren, Adam and Emily Kress and Leah DeWitt. He was the brother of Betty Regling of Middleport and is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Red was a concrete block truck driver for almost 44 years at the former Frontier Stone Products in Lockport, NY, retiring in l996. One of Red’s great joys was driving truck and after retirement he continued to haul products for Walter VanBuren Farms.

Throughout his life he was an avid hunter and fisherman, and his passion was for farming as Red loved to put in a huge garden every year. He will be fondly remembered for sharing all the extras so nothing would go to waste. He was a man of integrity, honesty, generosity and knowledge. He loved to read every chance he got and could tell you pretty much anything you wanted to know about past wars and history. So many people will miss his famous words, “Did I ever tell you about the time…”, as he began to tell a story of days gone by. Red’s family and friends were his happiness, and often said how you can never have too many friends. One of his greatest quotes was, “You can’t begrudge getting old, because not everyone gets to be.” Even though Red left us all too soon, we know that he wished for us to celebrate his life, have a beer, remember the great times and most importantly, laugh.

As were Red’s wishes, there will be no calling hours, but there will be a memorial celebration and remembrance of his wonderful life for family and friends on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at 1:00 PM, at the Bates, Wallace & Heath Funeral Home, 38 State St., Middleport. Also per his wishes, Red’s remains were cremated and will be interred in Orangeport Union Cemetery, Gasport, NY. Flowers are gratefully declined. If so desired, memorial contributions in Red’s name may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Dr., Lockport, NY 14094, or the Wolcottsville Volunteer Fire Company.
