Mrs. Helene M. Hoffmeister, nee Witkop, died yesterday in her home, 22 Monroe Ave., after a long illness. Surviving are her husband, Christian; a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Duerr; five sons: Benjamin, John, Edmund, Bernhardt and Christ Hoffmeister; a half-brother, Carl Witkop, all of the Tonawandas; a step-sister, Mrs. Anna Stoelting, Cambria, a step-brother, William Goerss, North Tonawanda; 13 grandchildren. Services will be Saturday at 2 P.M. in the Fretthold Funeral Home, 1241 Oliver St., 2:30 P.M. in St. Mark Lutheran Church. The Rev. Paul H. Fretthold will officiate. Burial in St. Marks Cemetery.

DUERR - Lonia H. Duerr, 75, of 28 Monroe St., North Tonawanda, Wednesday (June 27, 1973) at DeGraff Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Duerr was a lifelong resident of North Tonawanda, a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, the Ladies Guild of the church and the Valparaiso University Guild.
She is survived by her husband. Arthur F. Duerr; three sons. Richard D. (Jean) Duerr, Robert K. (Caroline) Duerr and Donald E. (Marianne) Duerr, all of North Tonawanda; 18 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, Benjamin, Edmund and Christian T. Hoffmeister, all of North Tonawanda. HOFFMEISTER - Edmund B. Hoffmeister, 69, of North Tonawanda, suddenly Wednesday (July 24, 1974). Mr. Hoffmeister was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Laymen’s League and former superintendent of the Sunday School, a 25-year member of the Remington Rand Club. He was secretary and treasurer of the Gratwick Lumber Company and custodian of Ohio Street Elementary School.
He is survived by his wife, Erma (nee Gentzke) Hoffmeister; a daughter, Mrs. Herbert (Marilyn) Koithan of the Town of Wheatfield; two sons, Gerald E. Hoffmeister of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Edmund B. Jr. of Libertyville, ILl.; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Benjamin Hoffmeister and Christian T. Hoffmeister, both of North Tonawanda, and was brother of the late John Hoffmeister and Lonia Duerr.
The family will receive friends at the Fretthold Funeral Home Inc., 1241 Oliver St., at Ward Road, North Tonawanda, from 7 to 9 this evening and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Friday. The body will lie in state in Redeemer Lutheran Church Saturday from 1 until 2 p.m., time of service. The Rev. Donald Krompart will officiate. Interment in St. Mark Lutheran Cemetery. B. C. Hoffmeister Dies; Founder Of Lumber Firm
The founder of the Gratwick Lumber Co., Bernhardt C. Hoffmeister, 51, of 192 Fredericka St., died at his North Tonawanda home Thursday night after a long illness. Mr. Hoffmeister was treasurer of the Niagara-Orleans Lumbermen's Association and a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. He had served as president of the Gratwick Lumber Co. Mr. Hoffmeister is survived by his wife, the former Loa May Behm; three children, Lyle, Carl and Mrs. Donald Shimschack, all of North Tonawanda; one grandchild; a sister, Mrs. Arthur F. Duerr of North Tonawanda; and four brothers, Benjamin C, Edmund B. and Christian T. Hoffmeister of North Tonawanda, and John A. Hoffmeister of the Town of Wheatfield. Mr. Hoffmeister's body will lie in state at St. Mark's Lutheran Church before services at 2 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Loren J. Shiley will officiate.

Christian T. Hoffmeister, 87, a retired banker, died Wednesday (Nov. 4, 1998) in his North Tonawanda home.
Born in North Tonawanda, he was a vice president of Marine Midland Bank and retired in 1972 as the manager of the First Trust office in the City of Tonawanda. He also had been manager of the State Trust and Payne Avenue branches of Marine Midland Bank.
He was a graduate of Rutgers University School of Banking and was active in the Tonawanda Chamber of Commerce.
Hoffmeister was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church of North Tonawanda all of his life and served as treasurer of the church. He also was active in the Boys Club and Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his wife, the former Alice Behm; a daughter, Susan Zawodniak of Bedford, N.H.; two sons, Paul of South Bend., Ind., and Mark of Arlington Heights, ILl.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mark Lutheran Church, 1135 Oliver St., North Tonawanda. Burial will be in St. Mark Lutheran Cemetery, Town of Wheatfield.

NORTH TONAWANDA, Feb. 8 - Sergeant Richard Duerr, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Duerr, 28 Munroe street, has been missing over Germany since January 10, a
War department telegram informed his parents today. The parents believe he was on his 15th mission as a turret gunner aboard a B-17 Flying Fortress when the ship failed to retuen to its base. he wrote the family on January 9 from an Eighth Air Force base in England that he had just completed his 14th mission. A native of this city. Sergeant Duerr graduated from the local high school In June of 1943. He enlisted in the Air Forces in November of that year. He received his wings at Las Vegas, Nevada, in May 1944 and went overseas in September of the same year. He won the Air Medal on his sixth mission.
Richard D. Duerr, age 97, of North Tonawanda, December 8, 2022, in the VA Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Richard served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He was a ball turret gunner on a B-17 and was shot down during the Battle of the Bulge and taken prisoner. He served as Lt. Colonel in the Civil Air Patrol and was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. Richard loved to fly. He was the husband of the late Jean (nee Broecker) Duerr. Dear father of Michael (Beth) Duerr of Sanborn, Lynn Jelodardezfooli and Scott Duerr both of North Tonawanda and Brian Duerr of Pendleton; grandfather of five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Robert Duerr and the late Donald Duerr. Uncle of many nieces and nephews. The Honorable Robert Kenneth Duerr, 88, of North Tonawanda, died peacefully on September 2nd, 2015, surrounded by his family at their home. He died from complications associated with Alzheimer's. Judge Duerr was born on December 24, 1926 and lived his entire life in North Tonawanda, NY. He was the son of the late Arthur and Lonia (nee Hoffmeister) Duerr of North Tonawanda. Judge Duerr is survived by his wife of 62 years, Caroline Czamanske Duerr and seven children, the Reverend Robert K. Jr. of North Tonawanda, Timothy of Birmingham, MI, Mary (Mark) Stettner of Milton, GA, Ruth (Randy) Ortiz of Rochester Hills, MI, Rebekah (Daniel) Stayner of Youngstown, NY, David (Marjorie) of Burr Ridge, IL and Sarah (Daniel) Anderson of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a brother Richard (Jean) Duerr also of North Tonawanda. His brother and sister-in-law Donald and Marianne Duerr preceded him in death. Judge Duerr attended St. Mark Lutheran School, graduated from North Tonawanda High School (1944), attended Canisius College and graduated from Valparaiso University with a BA (1951) and a Juris Doctor degree (1953). He was a member of the Law School's Golden Gavel Society and had an award named after him at the Law School. The “Duerr Award”, was created to honor graduates whose exemplary personal and professional lifestyles enhances the Law School's reputation in their own communities. The symbol of the award is a black blazer hand stitched with the School of Law crest. He was a member of the Sigma Delta Kappa Law fraternity. Judge Duerr was captain of his NT football team his senior year and played football at Canisius and Valparaiso. He served as a special agent, Counter Intelligence Corps, United States Army from 1953-55. He practiced law in North Tonawanda since 1955. He was an assistant District Attorney of Niagara County from 1958-1967. He was elected North Tonawanda City Court Judge and served from 1980-1995. Presently a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda, where he served as president and elder, Judge Duerr also served as president and treasurer of Redeemer Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda. He was a member of the Rotary Club, America Legion, Sikora Post, Gratwick Hose, Dom Polski's, The Boys Club of the Tonawandas, DeGraff Memorial Hospital and the Bar Association of the Tonawandas' and Niagara County. He was a past president of both the Bar Associations and the Town Club of the Tonawandas. Besides his great love for his family, a few of the Judge's true passions were taking immaculate care of the yard at his home on Christiana Street, his famous backyard cookouts, attending Valparaiso Homecomings, and following the Valparaiso University Crusaders. He was an avid Buffalo Bills fan, season ticket holder and traveled to all their Super Bowl games and many away games over the years. LEWISTON — Donald Edward Duerr, age 83, of North Tonawanda, peacefully, January 9, 2014 in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston. Donald was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a former employee of Columbus McKinnon, Valu Home Center and HSBC Bank. Donald was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Aero Club of Buffalo. He had an airplane pilot's license and he built and flew his own airplane. Donald enjoyed camping, motorcycle riding and spending time with his family. He was the son of the late Arthur and Lonia (Hoffmeister) Duerr. Beloved husband of Marianne (Lovegrove) Duerr for over 54 years. Father of Laura (Robert) Jagow, Linda (John) Reuther, Robert Duerr, John (Marla) Duerr, Donna (Don) Klug, Debra (Chris) Fronczak, Dorene (Brian) Manchester and Darcie (Daniel) Seider. Grandfather of 24 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Brother of Richard (Jean) Duerr and Robert (Caroline) Duerr; uncle of many nieces and nephews.

OBITUARY

Marilyn L. Koithan, of the Town of Wheatfield, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, in Northgate Health Care Facility.  She was born in  Tonawanda, NY, on January 11, 1934,  the daughter of the late Edmund and Erma [Gentzke] Hoffmeister.
Mrs. Koithan helped her husband on the family farm and ran the farm's fruit stand every fall. She was known as the "Apple Lady".   She also liked gardening, sewing, and crafts.  
She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Koithan was the wife of the late Herbert A. Koithan, who passed away in May of 2018.
She is survived by  her children David Koithan, Robert (Krisann) Koithan, Brenda (Brooks) Rimes, Kevin Koithan (Eva Liao) and Timothy (Sherrill) Koithan, 18 grandchildren - Jennifer (Kevin) Josing, Amanda (David) Benavidez, Colleen (Chris) Brown, Sarah Koithan, Kim Koithan, Melissa Koithan, Kelly (Christian) Siezega,  Kaitlyn Koithan, Allison Koithan, Jason Rimes, Nathan (Kristin) Rimes, Brett (Jocelin) Rimes, Matthew Koithan, John Koithan, Lydia Liao, Nicholas Koithan, Bailey Koithan, Jacob Koithan and 14 great grandchildren – Payton Josing, Kyle Josing, Alex Josing, Violet  and Jacob Benavidez, Gina Brown, Gabriella Brown, Joseph Brown, Christian Brown, Daphne Rimes, Angel Rimes, Katie Rimes, Caleb Rimes and Naomi Rimes, two brothers Gerald (Ingrid) Hoffmeister and Edmund (Pam) Hoffmeister, Jr., also many nieces and nephews.

Lyle A. Hoffmeister, 86, of The Villages, Fl (North Tonawanda, NY) passed at Cornerstone Hospice after his fight with cancer.
He was the beloved husband of Diane (Wall) Hoffmeister, sister of Nancy (Don) Schimschack, brother of Carl (late Bonnie) Hoffmeister of NC. Beloved son of William (Nancy and the late Julie) Hoffmeister of Clarence, NY and John Hoffmeister (Kirsten) of VA. Grandfather to John Paul (Cindy), great grandchild Jackson, Kassandra (Erik) Flading and Clayton all of VA. , Emily Wangler of Colorado and special niece known as Auntie Lora to the Grandchildren. Several cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Gratwick Lumber Company of North Tonawanda was a family business which he ended up closing. He worked at Kittinger Furniture in Buffalo for 26 years and 6 years at North Tonawanda Public Library. He was a lifetime member of St Mark’s Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda and an associated member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Florida. He was a Veteran and a lifetime member of Amvets in North Tonawanda. He has now gone full circle and is at peace in his eternal home.
