    Bertha Brauer of Altamont dies at 101
    ALTAMONT - Bertha Marie Rosine Haseley Brauer , 101, of Altamont entered into eternal life with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday (Dec. 26, 2007). Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Altamont, with the Rev. Mitchel Schuessler officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery. Memorials: Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lutheran Care Center or donor’s choice. Mrs. Bauer was born March 28, 1906, in Altamont, the daughter of John and Albertine Krueger Haseley. She was baptized by Pastor C. Luecker on April 4, 1906, in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Altamont, and was confirmed in faith by Pastor F.W. Brockmann. Mrs. Brauer was known for her enduring hospitality to everyone she encountered, whether friend, family or stranger. She would never let anyone go home without having a sample of her pies, cookies or cakes. Her generous spirit of Christian love and concern continued during her last years at the Lutheran Care Center, where she would bring joy and hope to her many fellow residents. Mrs. Brauer was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid organization and has served on many committees and in numerous offices during her long years of service. She married Henry A. Brauer on Sept. 28, 1930. He preceded her in death March 19, 1981. Surviving are her daughter, Helen of Altamont; son, Elden (Sue Conlin) Brauer of Wheaton; grandchildren, Douglas (Barbara) of South Aurora; Julia (Joseph) Heinz of East Dundee; Jennifer of Oak Park; Daniel of Chicago; great-grandchildren, Katie Brauer of South Aurora; Tom, Maggie and Will Heinz, all of East Dundee; Brody MacDonald of Oak Park. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Martin; and sisters, Pauline Bernahl and Anna (in infancy).

    Evelyn Pauline (Bernahl) Vitkus was welcomed home to the Church Triumphant on March 10, 2017. She was the daughter of Frank and Pauline (Haseley) Bernahl of Altamont, IL. Her brother Franklin and sister, Hilma (Schroeder) preceded her as well as her son Charles and daughter Diane Sue. Her husband Peter and son Daniel continue to live in Carmel, Indiana. Son-in-law, Rev. Dennis Meyer, granddaughter Rebecca (Robert) McCuaig and great-granddaughter Hannah live in La Porte, Indiana. Grandson Aaron (Cassie) Meyer live in Jasper, Indiana. Evelyn (Nana) was a woman of faith and strength. She described herself as “little but mighty". She and Peter were active in church. Evelyn regularly participated in women’s groups, Bible Studies, and Evangelism programs in all the various communities they lived. Most recently, Evelyn, Peter, and Daniel have been active members of Cornerstone Lutheran Church in Carmel, Indiana. Evelyn loved her family and their friends. She was an amazing cook and homemaker. Countless recipes have become favorites for her loved ones. There was always a warm welcome and a place at their table. Evelyn was an avid gardener. She loved God’s creation and whether it was the vegetable garden or flower garden, she was at home with garden gloves and a trowel to work the soil. The farm and the family from Illinois were a beloved part of her life and a favorite vacation spot for trips to connect with her roots. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church, 102 G Street, La Porte, Indiana on April 9, 2017 at 2:30 PM (CST). Arrangements have been made through Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center. Her son-in-law, Pastor Dennis Meyer, will preside at the service.     Diane Sue Meyer, 64, of La Porte, passed away on Monday, December 7, 2015 at IU Health La Porte Hospital.
    Sue was born in DeKalb, IL on December 10, 1950 to Peter and Evelyn (Bernahl) Vitkus. On August 16, 1975, she married Dennis H. Meyer who survives. Also surviving are her beloved children, Rebecca (Robert "B.J.") McCuaig and granddaughter of La Porte and Aaron (Cassie) Meyer of Jasper, IN; parents, Peter and Evelyn Vitkus of Carmel, IN; and brother, Daniel Vitkus of Carmel, IN. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charlie Vitkus. Woman of faith, daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and gifted teacher. As a second grade teacher she inspired thousands of students. She had passion for “Girls on the Run”, after-school programs, confirmation classes, Bible studies, and a devotion to walk daily with Jesus. She was stunningly beautiful and warmed any room she walked in with her smile and her laugh. She touched countless lives and was happy knowing her Lord was watching. Though many mourn her passing, her life will continue to be an example for others to follow. When some asked why she wasn’t healed by prayer she would say, “I was”. She was kept safe from suffering and was cured long ago from sin. She was loved beyond words every second we had with her. We grieve yet she rejoices. A cremation committal has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at Bethany Lutheran Church. A time of visitation will take place from 9:30 AM until the time of service on Saturday at the church. Burial will take place at Carmel Cemetery at a later time.
