    BERGHOLZ, June 15. - Funeral services for Mrs. Auguste Milleville Ferchen were held this afternoon from the home at 2 o'clock and at 2:30 o'clock at Holy Ghost Lutheran church with the Rev. Victor. Dahlke officiating. The senior group of the Holy Ghost school sang, "Jesus While Living and Jesus While Dying." The bearers were Christ Burow, Arthur Milleville, Cornelius Ferchen, Theodore Schmidt, David Ferchen and Edwin DeVantier. Interment was in Holy Ghost cemetery. Mrs. Ferchen was born at the Milleville homestead on the Old Falls boulevard and was a life long resident of the Town of Wheatfield for 82 years. She lived 64 years in the same house and attended school in the same house where she resided when ten years old. In 1886 she was married to Christian Ferchen, a parochial school teacher of the St. James congregation. She was the daughter of the late John and Albertine Krull Milleville. She Is survived by two sons, Hugo Ferchen, Niagara Falls, and Erich Ferchen, Bergholz; two daughters, Mrs. Arthur J. Williams. Cayuga drive, Niagara Falls, and Mrs. Edward Eggert, at home; one sister, Mrs. Bertha DeVantier, St, Johnsburg; 11 grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. She was a sister of the late John William Albert Milleville and Mrs. William H. Schmidt. Mrs. Ferchen was an active member of the Holy Ghost church and of the Lutheran Women's Missionary league. She was interested in the Lutheran Hour, sponsored by the Luther Laymen's league and founded by the late Dr. Walter Maler.

    Was Leader in Church and Community Life at Sanborn and Pekin
    SANBORN. June 29- Hugo C. Ferchen, a member of the U.S. Customs staff at Niagara Falls for the last 20 years and one of the best known residents of this village, died Saturday at the Ransomville hospital. Born at Bergholtz in 1888, he was a son of the late Christian and Augusta Ferchen. He is survived by his wife, Bessie Treichler Ferchen; one son, James C. Ferchen, this village; two daughters, Mrs. Harry T. Martin, Kenmore, and Mrs. Lawrence Stumpf, Los Angeles. Calif.: two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Williams. Niagara Falls, and Mrs. Edward Eggert, Bergholtz; a brother, Erich Ferchen, Bergholtz, and five grandchildren. Mr. Ferchen was a member of the Pekin Methodist church, Ransomville Lodge F and AM, Ismalia Temple and the Buffalo Consistory, Buffalo, the Federated Craft 131, Niagara Falls, Sanborn Lions club, a past director of the Pekin Fire company band, a member of the Frontier chorus and of the Brahms chorus. He was a former director of the Sanborn Methodist church choir and at the time of his death was superintendent of, the Pekin Methodist Sunday school. Friends may call at the Pike funeral home where services will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. The Rev. Elmer W. Ferguson will officiate. Interment will be in Mt. View cemetery, Pekin. Flowers are gratefully declined - but donations may be made to the Ransomville hospital or to the Lutheran hour in memory of Mr. Ferchen.

    Eleanor E. (Ferchen) Williams, 85, of 10831 Cayuga Drive died Friday (June 5, 1981) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital.
    She was a member of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, Lutheran Women's Missionary League, Ladies Aide (sic), Society and former member of the church choir.
    Surviving are her husband, Arthur J. Williams of Niagara Falls; four daughters, Mrs. Charles (Bernice) Forsey and Mrs. Myron (June) Stenzel both of Wheatfield; Mrs. Paul (Olive) Chaddosk and Mrs. Alvin (Elaine) Eichin both of Titusville, Fla; a sister, Mrs. Adelia Eggert of Wheatfield; also 16 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Albert Bahr officiating. Burial will be Holy Ghost Lutheran Cemetery.
    Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., today at the Fretthold Funeral Home Inc., 1241 Oliver St., North Tonawanda.
    Memorials may be made to Holy Ghost Lutheran Church Building Fund or Lutheran Bible Translators, the family said.

    LOCKPORT - Adelia F. (Ferchen) Eggert, whose involvement with music spanned most of the century, died Friday (July 13, 1990) at the Briody Nursing Home. Mrs. Eggert, 92, was a former resident of the Ferchen Homestead, Cayuga Street, Bergholz.
    She was born on Aug. 9, 1897, the daughter of Christian and Auguste Ferchen.
    She began music lessons as a 4 year-old and began teaching music at 16. She played the piano for a four piece family orchestra when she was 16, with her sister as the soloist. She and her sister sang duets. She was a member of the Holy Ghost Lutheran Church quartet and also played at silent movies at the Shredded Wheat County, where she worked from 1918 to 1929 packing biscuits.
    Mrs. Eggert was also music chairman for the Niagara County American Legion Auxiliary and was a member of the Auxiliary for 38 years at Post 1451 on Ward Road. She was a Niagara Gazette correspondent for 10 years and a member of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church for 74 years, where she was a member of the church's Ladies Aid Society, the Lutheran Women's Missionary League and the Lutheran League. She was also a member of the Niagara County Salon 25 of 8 and 40, Wheatfield Senior Citizens, Sanborn Senior Citizens and the First Volunteer Firemen's Ladies Auxiliary of Bergholz.
    She organized the "Happy Harmoniers" orchestra in 1953, which entertained locally for 25 years. She also took pride. in the fact that she was the first woman in Wheatfield to serve as a Niagara County jurist.
    She was the widow of Edward Eggert, who died in 1950 and sister of the late Eric Ferchen and Hugo Ferchen and the late Nora Williams. Mrs. Eggert is survived by one daughter, Sylvia Hilts of Sanborn; one son, Noel Eggert of Sanborn; and nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the DuBois Funeral Home, 2436 Niagara Road, Bergholz.
    The Ladies Auxiliary of the Bergholz Fire Co. will hold memorial services at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home
    Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, Bergholz with the Rev, Philip Sallaeh officiating. Burial will be in Holy Ghost Lutheran Cemetery; Contributions to Holy Ghost Lutheran Church are acceptable as tribute.

    Lieutenant Walter F. Ferchen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugo C. Ferchen 1115 Haeberie avenue, who has been reported missing since July 11 in North Africa. Lieutenant Ferchen was navigator with the Army Air Toop Command. Twenty–eight years old, he was graduated from the Niagara Falls high school in 1933 and from Houghton college in music in 1938. While at Houghton he was a member of the a Capella chorus and was baritone soloist of the Oratorio chorus and baritone with the Houghton college quartette, traveling extensively in eastern states. After his graduation he had charge of vocal music for four years at the Cuba, N.Y. Central high school and was assistant organist and choir director at the Cuba Methodist church leader of the Methodist Young People and secretary of the Genesee District Musical Festival. He was a music steduent of Professor Halstead and Professor Smith of Lockport, N.Y. Lieutenant Ferchen enlisted in the Army Air corps in May 1942 and left Niagara Falls on August 12 for Nashville, Tenn. He was sent to Monroe, Ala. And from there to Coral Gables, Florida, where he received his wings and was commissioned a second lieutenant on March 27 last as a navigator. Assigned to the Army Air Troop Command he left for North Africa last April 25. His last letter home was dated July 4. No further word has been received from his younger brother, Richard, radio man second class, who was reported missing on February 1 of this year. Another brother, James is employee as flight instructor in Army War Training Service Program at Lee Airfield, Lockport. Beside their three sons Mr. and Mrs. Ferchen have two daughters, Laura and Christine at home.

    Falls Navigator Presumed Killed
    Previously reported as missing, Second Lieutenant Walter F. Ferchen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugo C. Ferchen. of 1115 Haeberle avenue, today was listed as killed ln action
    while serving with the United States Army Air Forces. A navigator, he was reported missing in Africa on July 11 and has not been heard of since that time. A brother, Richard Ferchen. radioman second class with the United States Navy, was listed as missing ln action on February 1, 1943, and also Is presumed to have been killed.

    James A. Ferchen
    One of Niagara Falls’ leading businessmen, James A. Ferchen, passed away in Arizona this last week. He was 91. After building the Francis Optical Co. into a very successful business, he turned the business over to his son, Richard Ferchen and went to Florida. After a few years in Florida, where he worked part time in the Sears Optical Department, he retired and later moved to Arizona to be near his daughter, Peggy Smith. During the second World War, Mr. Ferchen was an instructor in the Air Cadets in Niagara University. When he married Myrtle Emms, they started square dancing and round dancing. They became very well known for their beautiful dancing in the Western New York area and also in Florida when they moved there. In addition to his wife of 66 years, Mr. Ferchen is survived by two sons, Timothy and Richard; two daughters, Denise Cohen and Peggy Smith; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held in the Vistoso Community Church in Sun City, AZ on Monday, October 8, 2007.

    Richard Hugo Ferchen. 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugo C. Ferchen. of 1115 Haeberle avenue, who has been reported by the Navy department as missing in action.
    Born in Sanborn. N. Y , the youth was a resident of that village until the time of his enlistment in the navy three years ago. Since the notice from the Navy department reported the youth as missing, several letters have been received from the radioman. His parents and other members of the family have hopes that he is still alive. He is a graduate of the LaSalle high school and is a member of the a capella choir of that school and of the choir at the First Methodist church prior to his enlistment. He is a radio mechanic, second class. The youth has two brothers. Walter, an air cadet at
    Coral Gables, Fla . and James, a CAP inspector at Lee Airfield Lockport N. Y . and two sisters Laura and Christine.

    STUMPF - Christine F. (nee Ferchen) Died in Los Angeles, CA, April 5, 2024. Born August 12, 1928 in Sanborn, NY to Hugo and Bessie Treichler Ferchen. Descendant of Jairus Rose and Daniel Treichler. A member of church choirs for most of her life. UCLA graduate. Formerly active in the Girl Scouts, PTA, Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, United Women in Faith (formerly UMW), and the Wesley Foundation. Enjoyed flowers and gardening. Wife of 64 years to the late Larry R. Stumpf. Survived by children Linda (Christopher) Preston, Justin Stumpf, Diana Stumpf, and Nancy (Michael) Steinkraus; grandsons William (Jada) Preston and Andrew Stumpf. Predeceased by brothers Walter and Richard Ferchen (both died in World War II), Jim (late Myrtle) Ferchen, and sister Laura (late Harry) Martin. A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Santa Monica, 1008 Eleventh Street, Santa Monica, CA on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 3 PM. The service will be livestreamed.

    NATHAN OLIVER FERCHEN "Ollie", age 95 of Bergholz, was called peacefully to his heavenly home on July 6, 2018, while at the Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence. Born in Niagara Falls, NY on March 21, 1923, son of the late Eric and Elsie (Mueller) Ferchen. He was united in marriage to Shirley (Brooks) Ferchen on June 7, 1947. She preceded him in death on December 26, 2004. Ollie served in the United States Army during World War II, and received the Purple Heart. A lifelong member of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church, Bergholz; he was employed as a truck driver for Staffen Trucking, Tonawanda, the Town of Wheatfield, and Prezezio Trucking. Ollie was a member of the American Legion- Wheatfield Post 1451, the Bergholz German Band, and was an avid Yankees fan.
    Survivors include four children, DeEtte (husband Francis Giles) Ferchen, Charlene (Randall) Scherrer both of Bergholz, Russell (Karen) Ferchen of Lockport, and Justine (Richard) Wright of Bergholz; eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Bethany, Vanessa, Stephanie, Michele, Cindi, Joseph, and Tyler; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth (Muriel) Ferchen of Bergholz; and a brother in law, Joseph (Carole) Brooks.
    Friends may call at the DuBois Funeral Home, 2436 Niagara Road, (Bergholz) in Wheatfield, on Tuesday (July 10) from 3-7 p.m. Services will be conducted by the Rev.     WHEATFIELD — Bernice E. Forsey (Williams), age 86, of Wheatfield, was called to her heavenly home on December 16, 2010 at ElderWood Health Care at Crestwood. Born March 30, 1924 in Niagara Falls, NY to the late Arthur and Eleanor (Ferchen) Williams. A lifelong member of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Bergholz where she was active in the choir, quilters and the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. Bernice was also a member of the Bergholz German Band, Bergholz Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and the Historical Society of North German Settlements in Western New York. During World War II, she worked at Bell Aircraft and later at the Carborundum Company, Abrasives division in Wheatfield. Bernice enjoyed traveling, camping, gardening and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

    Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Charles Forsey; five children, Richard (Colleen), Forsey, Bob (Marsha) Forsey, Jim Forsey, Marilyn (Andy) Dawe and Carol (Scott) Misener; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Olive Chaddock, Elaine (Al) Eichin and June (Mike) Stenzel; and brother-in-law, Elmer Forsey.

    Friends may call at the DUBOIS FUNERAL HOME, 2436 Niagara Road (Bergholz), in Wheatfield on Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Philip N.     FacebookTwitterredditOlive Marie "Ollie" Chaddock (Williams), 93, passed peacefully in the company of her beloved sister, Elaine, at her residence in Port Orange, FL. Ollie was born in Niagara Falls, NY, to Eleanor (Ferchen) and Arthur Williams.
    The family came to Florida in 1960 where Ollie continued raising her family and began a 15-year career as an accountant clerk and cashier for the Brevard County School Board. She has been a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for 40 years.
    Second to Ollie's love for her family and faith was her passion for gardening. Mounds of coffee grounds and love went into making the backyard of her longtime residence in Titusville an earthly paradise. Ollie also enjoyed traveling about the country as well as abroad.
    Ollie is survived by her three children, Thomas, Amy, and Paul Jr.; three grandchildren, Nicole, Chad, and Michelle; and her two sisters, Elaine Eichin and June Stenzel.

    Sylvia Carol Hilts, 85, of Sanborn, NY,  went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 19, 2018 while under the care of Niagara Hospice. She was born on  October 20, 1932 in Niagara Falls, NY,  the daughter of the late Edward and Adelia (Ferchen) Eggert.
    Mrs. Hilts was employed for several years with Union Carbide and briefly for the Tonawanda News.
    Music was a strong passion of hers, singing in the Niagara Chorale of NCCC and Festival Chorus with Douglas Wendt, Conductor.     She also sang in many local church choirs for Christmas and Easter Cantatas as well as being guest soloist for area church services, weddings and special occasions. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ.  
    She enjoyed reading and cooking, especially preparing the fish and wild game associated with the hunting and fishing adventures of her husband and sons.   She also loved to travel around the country with her husband Bill, attending various conferences and conventions.
    She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and her strong Christian faith carried her through 85 years. 
    Mrs. Hilts is survived by her husband of 63 years William R. Hilts, they were married in March of 1955,  her four children William D. (Sandra) of Lockport, Richard E. (Lynette) of North Tonawanda, David M. (Julie) of Burt and Susan Davignon of North Tonawanda,  loving grandmother to Kiel and Owen Davignon, Christian Hilts and Natalie Adelia Hilts, step-grandmother to Marla (Kyle) Costello, Keith (Brandy) Brong and Kim Brong, as well as 12 additional step-grandchildren, a brother  Noel (Joan) Eggert of North Carolina, also several nieces and nephews.
    She was a friend to many during her spiritual journey and she really appreciated the close friendship with Carol Mayer and Janelle Kroening.
    Her family will be present on Monday from 4-8 PM at RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 5893 Hoover Road, SANBORN, NY.

    Michael L. Stenzel, age 50, of Niagara Falls, NY was called to his heavenly home peacefully into the arms of Jesus, after a long courageous battle with cancer.

    Born June 20, 1965 in Niagara Falls, NY to Myron (Mike) and June (Williams) Stenzel. He attended Holy Ghost Lutheran School and graduated from Niagara Wheatfield High School in 1983. He was formerly employed at Greene & Kellogg, Superior Lubricants, and Norampac. Michael was an avid Buffalo Sabres fan as well as a NASCAR fan. His sense of humor was unique and enjoyed by many. Michael was a lifelong member of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church.

    Besides his parents, Michael is survived by his son, Michael Stenzel II, whom he cherished; brother, Jeff (Belinda) Stenzel of Bergholz; sisters, Sandy (Bob) Miller of Houston Texas; and Dawn Stenzel. Michael also leaves behind four nieces, Nicole, Allison, and Sarah Miller of Houston Texas, Riley Stenzel; and one nephew, Kyle Stenzel; two aunts, Ol Chaddock and Elaine (Al) Eichin both of Titusville, FL, several cousins and special family friend, Lois Handley.

    Friends may call at the DUBOIS FUNERAL HOME, 2436 Niagara Road, (Bergholz) in Wheatfield, on Friday, October 2nd from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM.
