    years old. wife of the Rev. o t to
    Bruss, pastor of St. Jacob's Lutheran
    church, died yesterday afternoon
    at the home here. Mrs. Bruss
    was born at Cedarburg, Wis., and
    had resided here the last 40 years.
    She was an active member and
    worker of St. Jacobs' church and
    Its Ladles* Aid society.
    Besides her husband, she is survived
    by three daughters, Mrs. Raymond
    Mlelke. of Niagara Falls, Mrs.
    Charles Grelner, of Lockport, and
    Mrs. Donald Becker, of this village;
    two sons, Roland W. and Gerald
    Bruss, of Bergholtz; ten grandchildren;
    three sisters. Mrs. Adele
    Ziemer, of Mankato, Minn., and the
    Misses Louise and Rose Grabau, of
    Athol Springs, N. Y., and a brother,
    John F. Grabau, of Buffalo.
    The funeral will be held Monday
    afternoon at 3:15 o'clock at the
    home with services at St. Jacob's
    church at 2:30 o'clock. The Rev.
    Edward Grabau, a cousin, of Walmore,
    will officiate. Interment will
    be In St. Jacob's cemetery

Grabau, 83, who resided in Athol Springs the greater part of her life and in Tonawanda for eight years, Thursday (Jan. 6, 1972) at Niagara Lutheran Home in Buffalo after a long illness. Born in Buffalo, she was a member of Salem United Church of Christ and was the daughter of the late Prof, and Mrs. William Grabau. Miss Grabau is survived by several nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., today only, at John O. Roth Funeral Home, Morgan and William Streets, Tonawanda. Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Salem United Church of Christ by the Rev. Karl H. A. Rest. Burial will be in Holy Rest Cemetery, Cheektowaga.     LOCKPORT—The Rev. John N.
    Grabau, 75, pastor emeritus of Trinity
    Old Lutheran church, Brunswick
    boulevard, Buffalo, died of a heart
    attack at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon
    ai 177 Niagara street, where
    he came to attend the funeral of
    his brother-in-law. Albert P. Wendt,
    former Sanborn hotel proprietor.
    Mr. Grabau's son, Dr. John C.
    Grabau, a bearer at the Wendt
    funeral, and other relatives were
    present when the minister died.
    The body was taken to the home
    of another son, Andrew W. Grabau,
    148 Fordham drive, Buffalo. It will
    lie in state Wednesday at Trinity
    Old Lutheran church, where services
    will be held at 2:30 p. m. Wednesday.
    The Rev. Mr. Grabau retired as
    pastor of the Buffalo church a year
    ago, after 45 years of service there,
    and was made pastor emeritus. He
    was feeling well when he came to
    Lockport to attend the Wendt services
    and went to the cemetery with
    the mourners but did not leave the
    automobile there. He was stricken
    when he returned to the Wendt
    home.
    Besides his sons In Buffalo, he Is
    survived by a son, Dr. Martin C.
    Grabau, of Cambridge, Mass.

    WALMORE-A host of friends
    from all portions of the eastern dis-
    trict of the American Lutheran
    Synod yesterday afternoon paid las
    tribute in Buffalo to the Rev. Dr.
    John Nathaniel Grabau, 75, former
    pastor of St. Peter's Evangelical
    Lutheran chuerch in the Walmore
    road.
    The Rev. Dr. Walter E. Schmtte,
    Sewickley, Pa., officiated at rites
    for Dr. Hrabau in Trinity Old
    Lutheran church, Buffalo, where
    Dr. Grabau had been pastor since
    1854 til April of this year. Prior
    to his long pastorate in Buffalo
    Dr. Hrabau was pastor in the old
    St. Peter's church here from 1885
    to 1894, at that time a recent
    ???? of the old Martin college
    and seminary in Buffalo.
    On Friday afternoon last week
    Dr. Grabau conversed with the local
    correspondent, recalling his stay in
    Walmore and giving data on the
    movement which his grandfather,
    the Rev. Johannes Andrew August
    Grabau led to this country from
    Europe in the '40s of the last cen-
    tury. His father, the Rev. John
    August Grabau, was pastor here
    from 1879 to his coming in 1885.
    His brother, Rev. Edward A. Grab-
    au, is present pastor of St. Peter's
    Another brother, Theodore Grabau,
    is teacher at St. James parochial
    school in Bergholtz and organist
    of St. James church in the latter
    community.
    On Sunday afternoon a jubilee
    occasion in the local parish, Dr.
    Grabau was on the way back from
    the cemetery where his brother-in0
    law, Albert F. Wendt, Lockport,
    founder and former proprietor of
    the Sanborn hotel and a large local
    coal busines, had just been buried.
    He suffered a heart fatal attack.
    As his brother pastor Grabau
    here ministered to a congregation
    which outgrew its original church
    building. Dr. Grabau, in Buffalo,
    likewise saw his congregation grow
    out of the equipment of his grand-
    father's time into one of the major
    houses of worship there.
    Dr. Schuette, president of the
    eastern district of the American
    Lutheran church, paid tribute to Dr.
    Grabau's 55 years in the ministry
    and to his activity. He was given
    the honorary doctor of divinity de-
    gree by Capitol university in 1934.
    He was, prior to the amalgamation
    resulting in the American Lutheran
    synod, former president of the Buf-
    falo Lutheran synod, formerly
    known as the Synod of Exiles from
    the Prussian church. He was a
    member of the board planning closer
    cooperation with the United Luth-
    eran church.
    Burial was in Holy Rest ceme-
    tery, Pine Hill. Besides his sons,
    Andrew W and Dr, John C Grabau
    of Buffalo, and Dr. Martin
    Grabau, of Cambridge. Mass., he Is
    also survived by a sister, Mrs. Helen
    Broeker, Detroit, and another
    brother. Dr. Rudolph Grabau, of
    North Tonawanda, well known to-
    ally.

Mr. Grabau was a teacher and organist in St. James Lutheran Church for 40 years, retiring in 1946. Husband of the late Martha A. Grabau who died in July of 1967. Survivors include 4 sons. Alvin J. of Fayetteville, N.Y., Rev. Harold T. of Buffalo, Edgar J. of North Tonawanda, Dr. A. Arthur Grabau, Kenmore, N.Y., a daughter, Mrs. Norma Thomas of Buffalo, 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 1 sister, Mrs. Helen Brocker (sic) of Detroit, Mich. Friends may call at the Fretthold Funeral Home Inc., 1241 Oliver St. at Ward Road, North Tonawanda until Friday evening, Mr. Grabau will lie In state at St. James Lutheran Church from noon Saturday until 2 p.m., time of service.     Longtime Pastor In Sanborn, Dies
    Funeral services for Rev, Edward A Grabau, 84, former minister of St. Peter's Lutheran Church here from 1905 to 1948, will be held at that church at 2 PM Tuesday.
    Rev. Mr. Grabau died at the home. of his daughter, Mrs. Carl Duwe, East Palestine, OH, today (Aug, 3, I963). He had made his home with Mrs. Duwe for some years.
    Rev. Mr. Grabau was born in Bergholz and was graduated from Martin Luther Co!Iege in Buffalo in 1899 and The Martin Luther Seminary also in Buffalo, in 1902. He was ordained in July 1902.
    His father, Rev. John A, Grabau of St James Lutheran Church, Bergholz. baptized his son, confirmed him, officiated at his Marriage to the former Francis.Goers also an area woman, and ordained him. His mother was the former Sophla Harnish.
    After his ordination, Rev. Edward Grabau served St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Lockport before coming to Sanborn.
    During his ministry at St. Peters, the current parsonage was built and the Rev Mr. Grabau was active as a teacher in the Christian Day School.
    Mrs. Grabau died in 1957.
    After his retirement, Rev. Mr. Grabau continued to live in the area for a short while before moving to Ohio in 1952. Failing eyesight was a factor in that move. He was a pastor emeritus in the Ohio District of the American Lutheran Church.
    Surviving in addition to the daughter are a brother Theodore Grabau, Bergholz, a sister, Mrs. Helen Broecker, Battle Creek, MI, two grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.
    Rev. Donald Rehkopf, pastor of St Peters, will conduct the funeral. Burial will be in St Peters Cemetery, Sanborn.
    Friends may call at the Pike and Jones Funeral Home Monday evening.
    The body will lie in state at the church from noon until 5 PM Tuesday.

    A native of Columbia, Mich., the former Erna O. Bruss was a longtime resident of Niagara Falls. She worked at the dress shop for 35 years until she retired in 1991.

    Buffalo (UP) — Military and medical circles mourned today the death of Dr. John C. Grabau, 52, retired Major in the Army Medical Corps and former regimental surgeon of the 106th Field Artillery. The physician who retired from active military duty in 1940, received the Distinguished Service Cross, Purple Heart and other honors for his service in World War I.

    A well-known physician. Dr. John C. Grabau, 52, of 61 Laurel St. died suddenly Sunday morning In his home after a heart attack. Born in Walmore, Niagara County, the Grabau family came to Buffalo in 1894. The doctor's father, Dr. John N. Grabau, who died last year, was for 46 years pastor of Trinity Old Lutheran Church and the family lived at 180 Goodell St., now quarters of the Association for the Blind. The young Mr. Grabau was graduated from old Masten Park High School In 1908 and worked for two years in the old Marine National Bank before entering the University of Buffalo School of Medicine, from which he was graduated in 1914. He interned a year in Buffalo General Hospital and began the general practice of medicine in 1915 in the family home, 180 Goodell St., later moving his offices to 61 Laurel St.
    Entered Army In 1916
    In 1916 he entered military service and went to the Mexican border as a member of the Medical Corps, Third New York Field Artillery. In June 1918, as a captain in the 106th Field Artillery, he went overseas and was wounded In action in France. In 1925 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extreme heroism by the U. S. Government and was promoted to major. He was also regiment surgeon until September 1940, when he retired from the Army. In awarding him the cross, Mayor Frank X. Schwab, read a War Department citation, stating: "Maj. Grabau went to the assistance of a wounded soldier at great personal risk to himself and although twice knocked down by exploding shells and wounded in the arm, he continued until he ascertained that the soldier was dead.
    Received Other Medals
    "Later he refused first aid to himself until he attended the wounds of three other men in his detachment." Dr. Grabau also received the Purple Heart, the Silver Star and the Conspicuous Service Cross of New York State. He returned to the United States March 13, 1919, with a major's commission. Dr. Grabau was a popular member of the 106th staff. His love of athletics began at Masten Park and while at the University of Buffalo he was center on the varsity basketball team. He played several musical instruments and was fond of travel. After resigning from the 106th he toured California and the West. Dr. Grabau was a member of the Erie County Medical Society, the American Medical Association, Buffalo Academy of Medicine, University Club, University of Buffalo Alumni Association, Constantia Men's Society of Trinity Old Lutheran Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars. American Legion and Legion of Valor. He had a Summer home in Ridgeway, Ont.
    Funeral Tomorrow
    Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock in Trinity Old Lutheran Church, where the body will lie in state from 1 to 3 o'clock. The Rev. Herman C. Damm, pastor, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Edward Nemeschey of Town Line, a college friend of Dr. Grabau. Burial will be in Holy Rest Cemetery, Pine Hill. Dr. Grabau is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura Knoche Grabau, and two brothers, Andrew W. and Dr. Martin C. Grabau. Active bearers will be Edward G. Kinkel, Albert G. Stroman, Dr. Albert A. Gartner, Dr. Barton F. Hauenstein, Dr. Robert H. Bauckus, Dr. Byron D. Bowen, Dr. Herbert A. Smith and Dr. J. Sutton Regan.     BRUSS – Olga Leupold Bruss, 59, died suddenly Saturday morning (March 26, 1955) in the parsonage of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church. Born in Buffalo, Mrs. Bruss had resided there the greater part of her life before marrying the Rev. Otto Bruss Nov. 1, 1950. She was a member of St. James Church, the Ladies Aid Society, and the Women’s Missionary Society of the church. She was also a member of the PTA of School District 5, Town of Wheatfield. Besides her husband, the Rev. Otto Bruss, she is survived by two stepsons, Roland W. Bruss and Gerald H. Bruss, both of Bergholz; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Raymond Mielke, Mrs. Charles Greinert and Mrs. Donald Becker, all of Niagara Falls, Niagara County, NY; 10 step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the parsonage on Rohr. St., Bergholz, where services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:45 and at 2 o’clock in St. James Lutheran Church. The Rev. Merton L. Baseler, pastor of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, North Tonawanda, the Rev. Martin J. Alpers, pastor of Trinity Old Lutheran Church, Buffalo, will officiate. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Bergholz

    SEGUIN, TX - A memorial service for the Rev. Harold T. Grabau was held Aug. 5 in, Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Seguin, TX. A retired Lutheran minister, Mr. Grabau, 86, died on July 29, 1995, at the home of his daughter, Gretchen Grabau of Houston, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Grabau, the son of Theodore and Martha Grabau, was raised in Bergholz. His father was a teacher at St. James Evangelical Lutheran School. Mr. Grabau left Bergholz in his early teens to study at the Martin Luther Seminary in Buffalo. When that school closed, he transferred to the Capital University Seminary in Columbus, OH. He was a pastor in Kansas and in Ohio early in his career. From 1943 to 1945, he served in the Army Air Forces Chaplain Corps in India. He returned to the military during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. Mr. Grabau continued to serve in the Army reserves, retiring as a lieutenant colonel from the Chaplain Corps in 1962. He returned to Western New York in 1965 to serve as an administrative assistant at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Buffalo. He then transferred to a church in Scottsdale, Ariz. He retired about 15 years ago as director of development at Texas Lutheran College. His wife of 60 years, the former Dorothy Engelbert, died in 1990. In addition to his daughter, he is survived by another daughter, Dona Manley of Corpus Christi, TX; a son, Lowell Grabau of San Antonio; a brother, Dr. A. Arthur Grabau of Buffalo; several grandchildren and a great-grandchild

    NORTH TONAWANDA - Edgar J. Grabau, 81, of Niagara Parkway, died Sunday (June 26, 1994) in Kenmore Mercy Hospital,
    He was born March 25, 1913, in Bergholz, the son of Theodore and . Martha (Gallenthine) Grabau.
    Mr. Grabau was the owner and founder of the E. J. Grabau Insurance Agency Inc.
    He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and a past board member of the Niagara Lutheran Home.
    He was married to Elaine G. Grabau, who died in 1986.
    He is survived by three sons, Robert Grabau and Dona1d Grabau, both of North Tonawanda, and Gary Grabau of Columbia, MD.; two brothers, Dr. A. Arthur Grabau of . Kenmore and the Rev. Harold Grabau of San Antonio, TX; and several nieces and nephews.
    Visitation will he from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. today at the Fretthold Funeral Home, 1241 Oliver St. Services will be held at 2 P.M. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, With the Rev.     GRABAU - A. Arthur, M.D. Dr. Greabau, a retired physician, and former local resident, died in Jupiter, Florida on Sunday, June 6, 2010. He was born in Town of Wheatfield, Niagara County, on March 11, 1917. He graduated from Niagara Falls Senior High School, and received his undergraduate education at Capital University, Columbus, Ohio. He then attended the University of Buffalo Medical School, and graduated in 1945. He became a resident physician in pulmonary diseases at Mount View Hospital, Lockport, NY, until 1950, after which he was appointed Medical Director for Tuberculosis Control at the Erie County Health Department. He retired from that position in 1972 and went into private practice until 1984. After that he divided his time between living in Florida and the Town on Tonawanda. Dr. Grabau was a past member of the American College of Chest Physicians, The American Medical Society, The American Trudeau Society, and the Erie County Medical Association. He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Buffalo. His hobbies included golf, photography, and painting, as well as world travel. He is survived by is son, John Campbell Grabau, PhD and his wife Deborah and his two grandsons, Mark and Trevor Grabau. Dr. Grabau was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Marie Campbell Grabau in 2006. Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407 in loving memory of A. Arthur Grabau, M.D.
