John J. Hoffmeister, 66, Takes Life By Shooting Himself in Abdomen With Shot Gun-Found By Son
John J. Hoffmeister, 66 years old, committed suicide yesterday afternoon at his home on the Niagara Falls boulevard near Bergholz by shooting himself in the abdomen, with a shot gun. Hoffmeister's act was attributed to a long siege of illness. He had been a sufferer from rheumatism.
Hoffmeister and his son, Arthur Hoffmeister, lived alone on their farm. The son returned to the house late in the afternoon from working in a field on the farm and found his father dead in the summer kitchen at the rear of the house. He had placed the butt of the gun against the wall and the muzzle against his abdomen and then pulled the trigger with his toe. The son last saw his father alive at noon.
Life Long Resident
Hoffmeister was a life-long resident of Bergholz. He is survived by four sons, Arthur and Benjamin and Alvin Hoffmeister of Lewiston and Harvey Hoffmeister, a World war veteran, who is being treated at the United States Navy hospital, Brooklyn, for a broken back, sustained in a fall from an apple tree over a year ago at Cambria, and one daughter, Mrs. William Bendt of Bergholz.
The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the residence. Interment will be in the Holy Ghost cemetery.

Funeral Services for Prominent Falls Milk Dealer Largely Attended. Funeral services for Fred C. Heuer, prominent Falls milk dealer who died last Thursday, following a short illness, were held from the family home, 1626 Cleveland avenue, Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. and at 3 o'clock from St. Paul's Lutheran church, with the Rev. Gustav Ziemer officiating. The very large attendance at the funeral and the profusion of floral offerings testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held by many friends and business acquaintances. The services were also attended by a large delegation of Falls milk dealers. Following the church services the remains were taken to Bergholtz for interment in the Bergholtz cemetery. The pall bearers were Henry Sy, John Devantier, Philip Williams, Lebrecht Schultz, Fred Werth and Edward Neubauer.

John Heuer, charter member of Bergholz Fire Company, dies
John A. Heuer, 79, a charter member of the First Volunteer Fire Company of Bergholz, died today in DeVeaux Manor Nursing Home in Niagara Falls.
Mr. Heuer, of 6906 Errick Road, Wheatfield, was a lifelong resident of that town, and a member of St. James Lutheran Church and the St. James Brotherhood.
A long-time fire chief in Bergholz, he was a member of many volunteer firemen's and fire chiefs associations. These included the Niagara County Volunteer Fire Chiefs Association, New York State Association of Fire Chiefs, Niagara County Volunteer Firemen's Association, State of New York Firemen's Association and Western New York Firemen's Association.
He also was a member of the Retired Men's Service Club of the Niagara Frontier, the Wheatfield Democratic Club and the Senior Citizens of the Town of Wheatfield.
In 1966, he received the Fire Service Award of the Western New York Volunteer Firemen's Association for "betterment of fire service in the community."
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Benjamin (Dorothy) Wolf and Mrs. Roy (Lydia) Masters; three sons, Clarence, Harold and James Heuer, all of Wheatfield; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Henry of North Tonawanda, and the Rev. Louis Heuer of Grove City, Ohio, and two sisters, Mrs. Louise Voelker of Niagara Falls and Mrs. Fred Dinger of Winterhaven, Fla.

The Rev. Louis Heuer, 87, of St. John's Lutheran Home in Mars, Pa., died yesterday (Jan. 16,1983). The Rev. Mr. Heuer graduated from Martin Luther Seminary in Buffalo, and served congregations in Livoma, Minn.; Akron, N.Y.; Holldays Cove, W.Va.; Columbus, Ohio; and Yorkville, Ill. After his retirement he lived in Grove City, Ohio, where he continued to serve as a supply pastor. He spent the last several years at the St. John's Lutheran Home. He is survived by his wife Wilhelmine (Mueller) Heuer; a son, the Rev. Bernard (Betty) Heuer of Whiting, N.J.; daughter Gertrude (the Rev. Willard) Kalk of Fairport Harbor, Ohio; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Edward (Edna) Mueller of Niagara Falls; and several nieces and nephews. GASPORT, June 21 - Funeral services for William F. Eggert, Bunker. Hill Rd., one of the best known residents of this area, were held at the Zion Lutheran church, Cayuga Dr., Niagara Falls. Mr. Eggert was born March 12, 1887, at Bergholtz. He was a member of the Holy Ghost Lutheran Church for 40 years. He also attended the Holy Ghost Parochial school and was confirmed in the Holy Ghost church. On July 24, 1926, he was united in marriage to Ella Wienke, by the Rev. Edward Grabau, formerly of Walmore. Mr. Eggert formerly resided in. Niagara Falls, LaSalle Section and was an active member of the Zion Lutheran church, Cayuga Dr., lor 25 years. He retired .several years ago, after being employed at the Carborundum Co. for almost 40 years. He served in the Infantry in World War I for two years, and was one of the last veterans in Niagara County to return home from active duty. He is survived by his wife, Ella Eggert; one daughter, Mrs. Anthony Miller, one grandson, Stanley Miller, at home, and is a brother of Mrs. Frank Dutton and Mrs. Carl Behrent, Tonawanda: Mrs. Roland Bruss, Bergholtz and the late Mrs. Arnold Krull and the late Edward H. Eggert, which were held yesterday afternoon from Fretthold Funeral Home, North Tonawanda, at 2 o'clock and at 2:30 o'clock at the Holy Ghost Lutheran church, this village, were largely attended by relatives, friends and neighbors. Mr. Eggert was born in this village on June 28, 1896, and attended the Holy Ghost parochial school. He was confirmed in the Holy Ghost Lutheran church. On October 7, 1928, he was united in marriage to Miss Adelia Ferchen. Last Tuesday he became ill and was rushed to Memorial hospital, Niagara Falls, where he died Friday. Mr. Eggert was a member of the Lutheran Layman's league and the 20-year club of the National Grinding Wheel company. North Tonawanda, where he was employed for over 20 years. The former Emma Eggert was born in Wheatfield and attended Holy Ghost Lutheran School
During the 1920s she worked for the Remington Rand and Wurlitzer companies. Mrs. Bruss was deputy registrar of vital statistics during the 1940s and 1950s.

The death last night of Edgar Heuer, 20 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. David C. Heuer of Bergholz occurred in the Buffalo General hospital after a lingering illness. Heuer was born in Bergholz, where he had always made his home, and besides the parents, is survived by three brothers, Theodore, Elmer and Louis and one sister, Alice Heuer.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at two-thirty o'clock standard time from the late residence and at three o'clock from St. Jacob's church after which interment will be in St. Jacob's cemetery.

BERGHOLTZ, N. Y., June 17.-Edgar Heur (sic), 19 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. David C. Heur. who live one mile south of Bergholtz, died in the Buffalo General hospital on Wednesday night following a serious operation he underwent a couple of weeks ago and from which he never rallied. Besides his parents he is survived by three brothers, Theodore, Elmer and Lewis (sic), and one sister, Alice. The funeral will be held at the home of his parents on Saturday at 2:30 p. m. standard time and at St. Jacob's church Bergholtz, at 3:00 p. m., Reverend O. Bruss officiating.

Funeral Services for Popular Young Man on Saturday.
BERGHOLTZ, June 23.-The passing at Edgar Heuer, 19 years old, removes one of the most popular young residents of Niagara county (sic) and vicinity, whose life was in every respect an exemplification of Christianity and civility.
Mr. Heuer was born in La Salle on August 29th, 1907. but came to this village when a young child with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David C. Heuer. He was an employe (sic) of the Buffalo Avenue Shredded heat (sic) Company at Niagara Falls last summer, but went into business with his father at Niagara Falls. He enjoyed the peoples' respect and esteem, and their support in the realization of his worthy aspiration and will be sadly missed by all his old and new friends. He was failing in health about four weeks ago, which made it necessary for him to go to the General Hospital in Buffalo, where a serious operation was performed on him for kidney trouble two weeks ago, and from which he never rallied. He passed quietly and peacefully away on June 15th and will be deeply mourned by his parents, three brothers, Theodor (sic), Elmer and Lewis, and one sister, Alice. The funeral services were held from the home of his parents at 2.30 o'clock, standard time, and at 3 o'clock at St. Jacob's church last Saturday. The Rev. Otto Bruss officiated. Burial was in St. Jacob's cemetery, where many of his friends and forebears rest, and his tomb will be the shrine of a wide circle of friends and relatives for many years to come. The. flower tributes were many and beautiful, among them a large piece of the Bergholtz Strong Nine baseball team of which he was a member before his illness. Bergholtz Man Called by Death
BERGHOLTZ, Dec. l6.-Theodore Heuer, 25 years old, of this village, died Saturday afternoon after an illness of ten months. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home here and at 2:30 at St. James Lutheran church. The Rev. Otto Bruss will officiate and interment will be in St. James cemetery. Mr. Heuer was well known at Niagara Falls where he was engaged in the meat business with his father, David C. Heuer, at 406 Seventh street, for the past eight years. He was a graduate of the Niagara Falls High school. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David C. Elmer G. Heuer, 85, who operated David C. Heuer and Sons Market on Third Street, died Thursday (June 29, 2000) in St. Mary's Manor after a lengthy illness.
A native of Bergholz, Heuer was 12 when he joined the Bergholz German Band, playing saxophone and singing with the group for more than 20 years. He was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School.
Heuer served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Upon his return from the war, Heuer operated David C. Heuer and Sons Market, which was owned and operated by David C. Heuer and his four sons from 1905 through 1984.
A lifelong member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Bergholz, he served as its financial secretary for 20 years and was a member of the mixed choir and men's chorus. In addition, he was a member of Bergholz Volunteer Fire Company and Bergholz Exempt Fire Company.
Known for his Bing Crosby-like voice, Heuer was a member of the Retired Men's Chorus and the Niagara Frontier Oratorio Society. While his sons were young, he also served as a Little League coach, and he passed along to them his devotion to the New York Yankees.
He and the former Kathryn Ann Boyle were married for 59 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Christine Schnepf; two sons, Frederick of Lewiston and Andrew; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be held at 9:30 A.M. Saturday in St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, Niagara Road and Rohr Street, Bergholz. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston

NIAGARA FALLS - George "Chick" Heuer, age 89, was called to his heavenly home to be with our Lord and Savior on September 19, 2010 at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. He was born in the Town of Wheatfield, NY on March 20, 1921 to the late George and Christine Heuer. George was predeceased by his loving wife, Helma (DeVantier) Heuer on December 26, 1986. They were united in marriage on August 3, 1946. George served in the U.S. Army in the 28th Infantry Division as a Heavy Machine Gunner during World War II. He was wounded in battle in Normandy, France on August 11, 1944, and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. George was employed for 43 years at the National Grinding Wheel in North Tonawanda, retiring in 1984. He was a longtime member of Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Bergholz, where he held numerous offices over the years, including elder and sang for many years in the choir. He was chairman of the Building Committee during the construction of the church. He was a member of the Bergholz Volunteer Fire Company for over 70 years and a former foreman and assistant chief. George was also a member of the Wheatfield Senior Citizens.

Survivors include two devoted daughters, Cynthia and Marcia Heuer of Wheatfield; a sister, Lillian (late Chester) Haseley of Sanborn and brother-in-law, Dennis (Doris) DeVantier of Wheatfield; and several nephews and a niece. In addition to his wife, he was also predeceased by two brothers, Martin and Arthur Heuer and a sister, Hildegarde.

NORTH TONAWANDA - Harold H. Heuer, age 89, of Wheatfield, was called to his heavenly home to be with our Lord on Sunday, August 29, 2010 at DeGraff Memorial Hospital. Born in the Town of Wheatfield, NY, on April 15, 1921 to the late John and Esther (Mueller) Heuer. Harold was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving during World War II in the 896th Signal Company. He was employed at Hooker Chemical for 40 years and a half years until his retirement. Harold was a member of St. John Ev. Lutheran Church in Wheatfield and their Men's Club, American Legion Wheatfield Post 1451, Bergholz Volunteer Fire Co., Lutheran Layman's League, Town of Wheatfield Senior Citizens, North German Historical Society; volunteered at Meals On Wheels, Elderwood Health Care at Crestwood and North Gate Health Care Facility. Hobbies and interests included gardening, bowling and playing euchre.

Survivors include his wife, Jane E. (Pankow) Heuer. Dorothy E. Wolf (Heuer), age 85, of Bergholz, was called to her heavenly home on Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at Northgate Health Care Facility. Born in Niagara Falls, Niagara County, NY on August 23, 1923 to the late John and Esther (Mueller) Heuer.Dorothy was employed for many years as a custodian with the Niagara Wheatfield School District and worked for the Niagara County Board of Elections. She was a life long resident of Bergholz, a life long member of St. James Ev. Lutheran Church, member of the Bergholz Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, Wheatfield Seniors and the Wheatfield Republican Club. Dorothy enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing and euchre tournaments. She was a senior volunteer at Northgate and Crestwood nursing care facilities, and the Errick Road BEN program.Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Benjamin Wolf on November 17, 1980, and a brother, Clarence Heuer. NORTH TONAWANDA — Wallace H. Krull, age 94, of North Tonawanda, October 8, 2011 after a brief illness. Wallace was a WWII Army veteran, a member of the American Legion Sikora Post and the B.P.O. Elks #1942, Amherst. He had retired from Buffalo Pumps.

Beloved husband of Harriet (Rankin) Krull. Father of Cynthia (Charles) Battaglia of North Tonawanda, Gloria (Michael) Schauger of Biloxi, MS, June Peresich of Saucier, MS and the late Rita Winas. Sylvia Carol Hilts, 85, of Sanborn, NY,  went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 19, 2018 while under the care of Niagara Hospice. She was born on  October 20, 1932 in Niagara Falls, NY,  the daughter of the late Edward and Adelia (Ferchen) Eggert.
Mrs. Hilts was employed for several years with Union Carbide and briefly for the Tonawanda News.
Music was a strong passion of hers, singing in the Niagara Chorale of NCCC and Festival Chorus with Douglas Wendt, Conductor.     She also sang in many local church choirs for Christmas and Easter Cantatas as well as being guest soloist for area church services, weddings and special occasions. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ.  
She enjoyed reading and cooking, especially preparing the fish and wild game associated with the hunting and fishing adventures of her husband and sons.   She also loved to travel around the country with her husband Bill, attending various conferences and conventions.
She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and her strong Christian faith carried her through 85 years. 
Mrs. Hilts is survived by her husband of 63 years William R. Hilts, they were married in March of 1955,  her four children William D. (Sandra) of Lockport, Richard E. (Lynette) of North Tonawanda, David M. (Julie) of Burt and Susan Davignon of North Tonawanda,  loving grandmother to Kiel and Owen Davignon, Christian Hilts and Natalie Adelia Hilts, step-grandmother to Marla (Kyle) Costello, Keith (Brandy) Brong and Kim Brong, as well as 12 additional step-grandchildren, a brother  Noel (Joan) Eggert of North Carolina, also several nieces and nephews.
She was a friend to many during her spiritual journey and she really appreciated the close friendship with Carol Mayer and Janelle Kroening.
