    Rev. Mackensen Dies; Former Mission Official
    The Rev. Herman Mackensen, a retired Lutheran minister, died yesterday at his home, 5864 North Twenty-sixth street, Arlington, Va. Mr. Mackensen was a pastor in Blasdell, N. Y., from 1944 until 1946 when he retired and came to Arlington to live. He took such an active part in the affairs of Resurrection Church in Arlington, that even though he had not been minister there he was elected in 1952 as pastor emeritus. He preached occasionally at the church and taught classes there.
    Headed Mission Group
    From 1919 until 1925, Mr. Mackensen was field secretary for the Lutheran Orient Mission Society in Canada and the United States, a group he helped found and of which he served as president. Later, from 1928 to 1932, he was superintendent of InterMissions of the United Lutheran Synod of New York and New England to promote establishment of Lutheran congregations.Mr. Mackensen was born in Ontario, Canada, and was graduated from Martin Luther College. He was ordained in 1894 in Buffalo and took over his first ministerial post in Walmore N. Y. He also had been a pastor in Detroit, Mich.; Southington, Conn., and Hartford, Conn. A pianist and organist, Mr. Mackensen composed church music. He also was the author of two books, "Raymond Lull, A Missionary Pioneer in the Moslem World," and "Revelation in the Light of History and Experience."

Kile, Arlington, Va., and Mrs. Hans Reinhart, New York; three brothers, Sigmund, North Tonawanda, N. Y., William J., Yardley, Pa., and the Rev. Paul Mackensen, a Lutheran minister in Baltimore; two sisters, Miss. Louise Mackensen, near Buffalo, N. Y., and Mrs. Elsie Denef, Marquette, Mich.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Ives funeral home, 2847 Wilson boulevard, Arlington. Burial will be in Columbia Gardens Cemetery. The family requests that any tokens of sympathy be in the form of donations to the Lutheran Mission, in care of Dr. J. Luther Mauney, Resurrection Lutheran Church, Arlington, Va.

    S. J. Mackensen Is Dead at 87; Active in Church
    Sigmund J. Mackensen, 87, of Shawnee Road, North Tonawanda, a former elder, Sunday school teacher and choir director at St. Martin's Lutheran Church, died today in DeGraff Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
    Mr. Mackensen had lived in the Martinsville area for 36 years and was employed at Thiele Feed and Coal Co. in North Tonawanda for many years, ending that association in December. He was born in Brandt, Ont.
    He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Eugene Thiele and Mrs. Leonard Thiele, both of North Tonawanda; a son, Sigmund Mackensen Jr. of Machias, NY; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Elsie Denef of Lutzen, MN., and two brothers, William Mackensen of Yardley, Pa., and the Rev. Paul Mackensen of Baltimore, MD.
    Arrangements are being made by Brunner Funeral Home.

    Lumber City Feed Firm Worker Dies
    Sigmund J. Mackinsen, 87, of Shawnee Road, Town of Wheatfield, died today (Jan. 11, 1962) at DeGraff Memorial Hospital.
    Mr. Mackinsen was employed by the Thiel (sic) Coal and Feed Co. until he became ill four weeks ago. He was a member of St. Martin's Lutheran Church, the Adult Bible Class, and was a former choir director, and Sunday School teacher. Mr. Mackinsen was born in Brant, Ont., and resided here for the last 36 years. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Eugene (Helen) Thiele and Mrs. Leonard (Elizabeth) Thiele, both of this city, and a son, Sigmund Mackinsen Jr. of Machias, N. Y.; a sister, Mrs. Elsie Denef of Lutzen, MN; two brothers, William Mackinsen of Yardley, Pa., and Rev. Paul Mackinsen of Baltimore, Md.; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
    Friends may call at Brunner Funeral Home until noon Saturday. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at St: Martin's Lutheran Church with Rev. Luther Knauff officiating. Burial will be in White Chapel Memorial Park.

    Plea Filed In Killing
    BUFFALO (AP) - Alton L. Howe, 20, of North Tonawanda, has admitted in court that he kicked a man to death in a restaurant parking lot last May 19. Howe's plea of guilty to a charge of first degree manslaughter was accepted Tuesday by Justice Ann T. Mikoll of State Supreme Court. She set sentencing for Jan. 30. Howe had been charged originally with murder in the death of Siegmund Mackensen, 65, also of North Tonawanda. When questioned by Justice Mikoll, Howe said Mackensen grabbed him as he was going through automobiles looking for "small items like tape players".Howe said he threw Mackensen to the ground and kicked him repeatedly in the head. "I didn't know what I was doing," Howe told the judge.

    EUSTIS, FL — Elizabeth S. (nee Mackensen) Thiele, age 95, entered eternal rest on July 31, 2010, in Florida. She was a former resident of the Town of Wheatfield. She was born to Sigmund and Susan Mackensen, in Yardley, PA, on March 25, 1915. She was an active member of St. Martin Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda, participating in many capacities.

    Elizabeth was predeceased by husband, Leonard, and son, Paul. She is survived by daughter, Marie (Bill) Cole; daughter-in-law, Julien Thiele; grand- children, Andrew (Angelica) Cole, Jennifer (Jim) Wanamaker, Jeffrey (Michele) Thiele and Mark Cole; great-grandchildren, Emily and David Wanamaker, Andrew and Caroline Thiele, and Andrea Cole; and many other loving family members.

    A Memorial Service will be held at St. Martin Lutheran Church, 322 Old Falls Blvd., North Tonawanda, NY, on Friday, August 13, 2010, at 11:00 AM, with the Rev. R. Devie Ellis presiding. Memorials may be made to St. Martin Lutheran Church.

    M. W. Denef Dies at 60 In Hospital
    NORTH TONAWANDA Marin W. P. Denef, 60, of 1537 Kingston St., died Saturday (July 22, 1961) in DeGraff Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Born in Brant Township, Ontario, he had lived in this city for the last 23 years. He was employed as a dispatcher for the Thiele Coal and Feed Corp. for 19 years. He was a member of St. Martin's Lutheran Church and the brotherhood of the church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Hilda Mante Denef; a son, Leroy Denef, of this city; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Denef, of Lutsen, Minn.; eight sisters, Mrs. Martin Petersen and Miss Louise Denef, both of Lutsen, Minn.; Mrs. Alvin Fritz, of Marquette, Mich.; Mrs. Ferdinande (sic) Spleete (sic) and Mrs. Ace Schumacher, both of Madison, Wisc.; Mrs. Howard Bertelsen and Mrs. Charles Murray, both of Palto (sic) Alto, Calif.; Mrs. Lloyd Bowman, of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, and a brother, Walter Denef, this city.     TONAWANDA — Paul L. Thiele, age 66, of the Town of Wheatfield, March 28, 2010, in Millard Fillmore Hospital, Buffalo. Mr. Thiele was a 1961 graduate of North Tonawanda High School and a 1965 graduate of Capital University. He served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam. He was the President of Thiele Inc. and was a member and Regional Vice-President of ESPA, and was a member of other trade organizations. He was an active member of St. Martin Lutheran Church, having served as Choir Director, Treasurer, President, Trustee, Sunday School teacher and Youth Group Director; he had served as the Treasurer of the Regional Youth Group Gathering. He was a Board member of the Tonawanda and Buffalo Chapters of the American Red Cross and First President of NY Penn Regional Blood Services.

    Beloved husband of Julien (nee Rettig) Thiele; father of Jennifer (Jim) Wanamaker of Wheatfield and Jeffrey (Michele) Thiele of Amherst; grandfather of Emily and David Wanamaker, Andrew and Caroline Thiele; son of Elizabeth Thiele of Eustis, FL and the late Leonard Thiele; brother of Marie (William) Cole of Eustis, FL and is survived by many other loving family members.

    Friends may call at the Fretthold Funeral Home Inc., 1241 Oliver St. at Ward Rd., in North Tonawanda on Tuesday from 7-9 PM and Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 AM from St. Martin Lutheran Church, 322 Old Falls Blvd., North Tonawanda. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to ELCA World Hunger, the American Red Cross or St. Martin Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.

    Claudia Helen Thiele, 89, of Pendleton, New York, Wednesday (May 29, 2024) in Elderwood at Lockport. Claudia was born in North Tonawanda on March 30, 1935 to Eugene William Carl Thiele, and Helen E. (Mackensen) Thiele.
    Claudia is survived by her sons Claude and Kevin (Brenda) Joerg, sister of Marion (the late Denis ) Bay, grandmother of Theodore (Nicole) Joerge, and Madeline Joerg, BreAnne (Richard) Kilmer, and Katlynne (Jon) Garcia, great grandchildren Sadi Kilmer, Cameron Kilmer, and Harley Garcia, also surviving are nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services were held privately by the family, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
