    Notes:

    Ziehl, Ferdinand, was born in Walmore, August 28, 1867, a son of Charles and Mary Ziehl, natives of Germany. He was reared in a farm and worked in a foundry and in Gratwick's lumber yard for two years before embarking in the hardware business at Martinsville in 1891. He also conducts a coal yard and handles about 500 tons annually. In 1889 Mr. Ziehl married Gussie Croskop and their children are Edward, Lewis, Louisa and Matilda. He is a member of St Paul's Lutheran church and is a trustee of the Parochial School.

    -Services for Edward Ziehl, 47,
    World War veteran, who died yesterday
    at the home of his slater. Mrs.
    Roman Belter, 215 Rumboldt street,
    will be held there at 2:30 o'clock
    tomorrow afternoon. Interment
    will be In St. Paul's cemetery.
    Mr. Zlehl lived most of his life
    here but for the past year had been
    employed on the farm of Carl Ossman.
    Town of Wilson. He served
    overseas with Company H, 314th
    Infantry. 19th division.
    Surviving are his father, Ferdinand
    Ziehl, of this city; five sisters,
    Mrs. Clesson. of Niagara Falls, Mrs.
    Belter. Mrs. Frank Ensmlnger. and
    Mrs. Carl Schoelles. of North Tonawanda.
    and Mrs. Lawrence Hosmer,
    of Tonawanda: and two brothers,
    Louis A., and Carl Zlehl, of this
    city .

    Funeral services are scheduled
    Tuesday for Louis A. Ziehl, a
    lifelong North Tonawanda resident
    who would have celebrated his 88th
    birthday today.
    Ziehl died Saturday at DeGraff
    Memorial Hospital after an apparent
    heart attack.
    A recipient of the Purple Heart in
    World War I, he was a past
    commander of the 78th Division,
    Veteran, Association of Western
    New York.
    A member of St. Paul's Lutheran
    Church. Ziehl operated Ziehl's
    Grocery and Hardware Store in the
    Martinsville area of North Tonawanda
    from 1919 to 1945, when he
    sold the business.
    Ziehl also was a 59-year member
    of American Legion Post 264 of
    Tonawanda and was a life member
    of Rescue Volunteer Fire Company
    No 5.
    Ziehl lived in his home until the
    day he was stricken.
    The husband of the late Margaret
    Waterstrat Ziehl, he is survived by
    a daughter. Marion Gau. He was
    the brother of Rose Wright of
    Grand Island, Mrs. Roman
    (Matilda) Beiter of Niagara Falls,
    Doris Hosmer of North Tonawanda,
    Mrs Carl (Clara) Schoelles of
    Wendelville, Mildred Ziehl of North
    Tonawanda, the late Ida Ensm-
    inger and the late Carl Ziehl. Ziehl

    also had five grandchildren, several
    nieces and nephews.
    The family will receive friends
    today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
    and from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday
    at the Brunner Funeral Home, 156
    Robinson St., North Tonawanda.
    Services from St. Paul's Lutheran
    Church are slated for 1:30 p.m.
    Tuesday.

    NORTH TONAWANDA — Marion Z. Gau (nee Ziehl), age 84, of North Tonawanda, December 6, 2010 at the Newfane Rehabilitation & Health Care Center, after a long illness. Marion was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education from State Teachers College at Fredonia. She worked in the Tonawanda and North Tonawanda Public School System as a Music teacher. For 25 years, she was the Head Usher at the former Melody Fair. As an accomplished violinist, she played with the Niagara County Community College Orchestra and her church. Marion was active in the community working for the DeGraff Memorial Hospital Auxiliary; an 80 year member of Post 264 American Legion Auxiliary and involved with the Parent Teachers Association at Gilmore School. Marion was an avid bridge player and teacher. Marion and her family enjoyed the family cottage in Silver Bay, Ontario. She and her husband, the late Edwin A. Gau, owned and operated Gau Printing.

    Beloved mother of Gail Gau of Lewiston, Gary (Cheryl) Gau of Howard Lake, MN, Glen (Lissa) Gau of North Tonawanda, Gloria Gau of North Tonawanda, and Gordon Gau of Wheatfield. Grandmother of Gillian and Rachel Gau.

    Allen Roy "Smiley" Ensminger

    NORTH TONAWANDA —
    Allen Roy "Smiley" Ensminger of North Tonawanda, NY, passed away on May 11, 2013 at the age of 85. He was born in North Tonawanda on February 26, 1928 to Frank C. and Ida (Zihel) Ensminger. He was the husband of the late Shirley (nee Tuttle) Ensminger. Beloved father of Scott Ensminger. Brother of LaVern F. Ensminger and the late Robert L. Ensminger and Dorthy C. Root. Uncle of many nieces and nephews. He was the companion of Joyce Freck.
    In 1945, he was employed at the Edward Hirtgam farm in Ransomville, NY where he supervised 10 German prisoners of war. He entered the United States Army in March of 1946 and served as a radio and telephone repairman. For a time, he was stationed in Newfoundland. He attained the rank of corporal, was authorized for the World War II Victory Medal, and was honorably discharged in September of 1947. On November 15, 1952, he married Shirley Tuttle and for a time they lived in Tucson, Arizona. Allen was employed at Bell Aerospace in Niagara Falls for 19 years as a rocket technician. He worked on the Agena rocket engine, considered to be one of the most reliable rockets ever built and the Apollo Lunar Module ascent engine, which was responsible for getting the astronauts off the moon. He later worked in the sign shop of the Niagara County Highway Department in Lockport for 15 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Gratwick Hose Fire Company since 1951, a member of the North Tonawanda Firemans Association and a member of the American Legion Wheatfield Post #1451.
    Friends may call at the Fretthold Funeral Home, Inc., 1241 Oliver St. at Ward Rd. in North Tonawanda on Thursday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. A Memorial Service will be held at the funeral home beginning at 8 PM. The Rev. Devie Ellis will officiate. In lieu of flowers, Allen requested that donations be made to the charity of one's choice.

    PRINTGail Marie Gau, DC, on January 15, 2022 after a long illness. Daughter of the late Edward and Marion (nee Ziehl) Gau. Sister of Gary Gau of Howard Lake, MN, Gloria L. Gau of North Tonawanda, Gordon Gau of Tennessee and the late Glen Gau. Also survived by 2 nieces and two great nephews and one great niece.
    Gail was a 1971 graduate of North Tonawanda St. High School. She graduated from Logan Chiropractic in St. Louis in 1986. She was a caring professional who sought to help people from their pain. Her love in life was caring for her dogs and her home in Lewiston.

    There is no prior visitation.

    Memorials may be made to the ASPCA of Niagara County.

Glen was co-owner of Shawnee C.C. in Wheatfield, NY since 1986. He was a longtime member of the Third Warder's Social Club in North Tonawanda. He will be missed by his many golfing, fishing, and hunting buddies who knew him as "Goo." His favorite hobby was restoring his canary yellow 1970 convertible mustang. Glen donated his body to the University of Buffalo Anatomical Gift Program, a testament to his generosity and eagerness to help find a cure for cancer. A party will be held in his honor in October 2015.
