Town Assessor Succumbs to Heart Attack While Cutting Corn as Fodder for Cow
August Ziem, 71, of Wheatfield Found Dead by Members of His Family Who Became Alarmed at Prolonged Stay in Field and Conducted Investigation
August Ziem, 71, of the Niagara road and Hunt street, Bergholtz, died of a heart attack while cutting corn in a field on the farm of his son-in-law, George Martin, on the Ward road, half a mile south of the Niagara Falls boulevard, yesterday afternoon.
Mr. Ziem went to the Martin farm early in the afternoon to cut corn as fodder for his cow. His prolonged stay in the field alarmed his family and, upon investigation, they found him dead in the field, about a quarter of a mile from the Martin home.
Coroner J. E. Helwig issued a certificate of death due to a heart attack.
Mr. Ziem was a well known resident and a leading Republican of the town of Wheatfield. He was serving his ninth year as an assessor.
Born in Germany, Mr. Ziem was brought to America by his parents at the age of nine months. He made his home in Michigan until removing to the town of Wheatfield 25 years ago.
He is survived by a wife, Anna; three daughters, the Misses Esther and Ariel Ziem at home and Mrs. Martin; two sons, Grover and William of Bergholtz; six grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Mary Ziegler of Caro, MI.
Rites will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the residence and at 2:30 from the St. James church. Rev. Otto Bruss will officiate and burial will be in St. James cemetery.

N O R T H TONAWANDA - Grover L. Ziehm, 65, of 6828 Sy Road, Town of Wheatfield, died unexpectedly Monday (Jan. 18, 1965), after suffering an apparent heart attack. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital. Mr. Ziehm was born in Michigan and had resided in Wheatfield the greater part of his life. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Bergholtz. He operated Ziehm's Motel in Niagara Falls Boulevard for about 30 years, retiring in 1964. Prior to operating the motel he was employed by Hooker Electrochemical Corp in Niagara Falls for 27 years, retiring about 10 years ago. Survivors include his widow, the former Clara Ferchen; two sons, Chester G. Ziehm,
Grand Island, and Maurice A. Ziehm, Schenectady ; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth
(Pearl) Ward and Mrs. Silvan (Yvonne) Bricca, both of Wheatfield; a brother, William

MARTIN – Mrs. Ella R. Martin, 66, of 7040 Ward road, Town of Wheatfield, Friday (Nov. 20, 1970) at the North Town Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Martin was a member of St, John’s Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her husband, George F. Martin; two sons, George F. and Dennis G., both of the Town of Wheatfield; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Esther Ziehm of Buffalo and Miss Ariel Ziehm of Tonawanda, and a brother, William Ziehm, Town of Wheatfield. Friends may call at the Fretthold Funeral Home Inc., 1241 Oliver St. at Ward Road, until Monday. Services will be in St. John’s Lutheran Church at 1:30 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Clarence W. Chester G. Ziehm, 71, a resident of Grand Island, died Tuesday (Jan. 24, 1995) in Sisters Hospital.
Ziehm was born in the Town of Wheatfield and served in the Army in Europe during World War II.
He graduated from the University of Buffalo School of Business Management and worked for several years at Carborundum Co. and Standard Oil Co. in Cleveland.
He was a member of First Trinity Lutheran Church. He also was a charter member of Wheatfield Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the Grand Island Rod & Gun Club.
Surviving are his wife, Rosemarie Brym-Conrad Ziehm; three sons, David of Bergholz, William of Chicago and John of Niagara Falls; a daughter, Marion Wendt of Grand Island; a brother, Morris of Schenectady; two sisters, Pearl Ward and Yvonne Bricca, both of Wheatfield; and six grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 A.M. Friday in First Trinity Church, 1570 Niagara Falls Blvd., Town of Tonawanda. Burial will be in Forest Lawn, Buffalo.

TONAWANDA, Aug. 19. (AP)-Doris Ziehm, two-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grover Ziehm. died at a hospital today from the effects of gasoline which she drank at her home last night.
The child, her parents said, left the dinner table last night and went out in the yard to play. A short time later the parents heard a scream and upon investigation found the child lying in the yard with a small gasoline can in her hand. At the hospital it was said the child died from an internal hemorrhage and convulsions brought on by the gasoline she had drunk.
Besides the parents, a sister, Pearl, and a brother, Chester, survive. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home and half an hour later at St. Jacob's Church, Bergholz. The Rev. Otto Bruss will conduct the services and burial will be in St. Jacob's cemetery

Morris (Moe) Ziehm went home to be with his Lord & Savior January 16, 2021 at Ellis Hospital after a long illness. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, November 19, 1932, he was the son of the late Grover and Clara Ziehm. Surviving are his loving wife of 61 years, Yvonne. Children Doris Krom (Tom), Douglas Ziehm (Sharon), Deborah Adams (Christopher), Daniel Ziehm (Lucinda). Grandchildren Stacy Eustice (Benjamin), Dr. Stephanie Krom (fiancé Dr. Gabriel Vachon), Jason and Jennifer Forgue, Laura and Elyssa Adams and Lauren Ziehm. Great grandchild Bryce Eustice. He is also survived by his sister Yvonne Ziehm Bricca. Morris was predeceased by his siblings Doris, Chester and Pearl. He served in the United States Army from 1954-1956. Morris graduated in 1959 from the University of Buffalo School of Engineering with a Bachelor of Science , then earned a Master of Science in Engineering from Union College. He was an associate professor of mechanical technology at Illinois Central College from 1968-1974. He then worked as an engineer at GE Large Steam Turbine retiring in 1994 after 29 years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and an active member of the church council for many years. Calling hours will be held Friday January 22nd from 3 to 5 p.m. at DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam. Masks must be worn and all Covid-19 restrictions will be adhered to. Gordon F. Martin, age 85 of the Town of Wheatfield, was called to his heavenly home on March 30, 2017 while at the Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence, Lewiston, New York. Born in North Tonawanda, New York on March 23, 1932, he was the son of the late George and Ella (Ziehm) Martin. Gordon was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1952-1954. He was employed as a milkman with the Sterling Amherst Dairy, worked at Hubman Burial Vault Company, North Tonawanda, and Niagara Monument Works, Niagara Falls, until his retirement. A life long member of St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, Wheatfield, where he formerly served as a Trustee and worked on the church cemetery. Gordon was a member of the American Legion- Wheatfield Post 1451, the Jaycee's, Wheatfield Democratic Club, and a 63 year member of St. Johnsburg Fire Company. 
 Surviving are his three children, Sherrill (James Gray) DeVantier, Tamara (James Bellina) Heim, and Gregory (Sherri) Martin; a brother, Dennis (Donna) Martin; five grandchildren, Timothy (Kim) DeVantier, Kelli DeVantier, Gregory, Jamie and Alyssa Martin; a great-grandson, Calvin DeVantier; a nephew, Kevin; and niece, Beth Ann.

David R. Ziehm, passed away on April 25, 2013. He was a resident of Grand Island.
Survivors include his brothers, William (Lucille), John (Paula); and sister, Marion Wendt (Douglas). He also has many nieces and nephews who, along with friends, will greatly miss him.

(Ziehm) Bricca and the late Silvin Bricca. He attended local schools and graduated from Niagara Wheatfield High School. Owen was a welder at Avins and was an avid car enthusiast, who also loved culinary arts.
Besides his mother he is survived by his wife, Melanie L. (Bak) Bricca; sons, Ryan (Amanda) Dugan, Colin Dugan, Steven Bak and Michael Mura; sisters, Naomi (James) Parkinson, Heidi Wallace, Rachel (Vincent) Corulli and Amy (Fred) Deer. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Besides his father he was predeceased by his son, Benjamin Dugan and sister, Lori Myrtle.

Lori Yvonne (Bricca) Myrtle, age 54, of Cheektowaga, formerly of Niagara Falls, was called to her heavenly home to be with our Lord, on October 27, 2012 at the Waterfront Health Care Center in Buffalo, after a lengthy illness. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, on November 8, 1957, she is the daughter of Silvin and Yvonne (Ziehm) Bricca.
Lori was a 1975 graduate of Niagara Wheatfield High School, was employed at the Newfane Postal Office and Mark Smith Insurance in Lockport. She was a former member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, in North Tonawanda. Hobbies included arts and crafts, and baking.
Lori was predeceased by her husband, Michael Myrtle in 2006. Survivors include her parents of Grand Island; a brother, Owen (Melanie) Bricca; four sisters, Naomi (James) Parkinson, Heidi Wallace, Rachel (Vincent) Corulli and Amy (Fred) Deer; several aunts and uncles and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 3rd at 10:30 AM in the DUBOIS FUNERAL HOME, 2436 Niagara Road, (Bergholz) in Wheatfield, with Pastor Richard George, officiating. Inurnment will follow in Acacia Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Niagara County SPCA.
