McCollum, Abram M., was born in Porter, October 29, 1842, a son of Abram Howe and Susanah (Zittle) McCollum. His father was born in Tuscarora Valley in 1820, son of Joseph McCollum, born in Pennsylvania in 1775, and in 1820 came to Porter, settling on a farm where he lived and died in 1853. The maternal grandfather, Conrad Zittle, was born in Germany in 1765, and came to the United States with his mother in 1774, who died in Pennsylvania. Mr. Zittle came to Porter about 1809 or 1810 and settled on the farm at Tourer's Corners by the Four-mile Creek; he sold to Peter Tower and settled at Zittle's Corners about 1816 or 1817, where he lived and died April 11, 1850. Abram M. McCollum was reared on a farm, and educated in the common schools. He is a farmer and owns 120 acres of land and works about 200 acres. In 1869 he married Almyra S. Sanborn, daughter of Israel Sanborn of Orleans county, aud niece of Hon. L. R. Sanborn of Sanborn, Niagara county. Mr. and Mrs. McCollum had seven children Anna W., May (who died at four years of age), Evangeline, Abram D., Israel L., Lulu and Grant. Mr. McCollum is a Republican in politics, and in 1863 enlisted in Co. F, 8th N. Y. Heavy Artillery, serving under Col. Peter A. Porter until the battle of Cold Harbor, Va., June 3, 1864, where he was disabled by a bullet striking the shoulder and lodging in the left side of his head, which caused him to lay on the field unconscious for ten or twelve hours; after coming to he had lost so much blood from the shattered arm, that he was unable to help himself, and as no flag of truce u-as accepted from either side, was left laying on the field for two days, and then taken to Fairfax Seminary, Va., from which he was honorably discharged October 10, 1864. He is a member of Melville C. McCollum Post of Ransomville, N. Y., and its present commander, said post being named in honor of a brother. Mr. McCollum's father was a lifelong Whig and Republican; he was a leader in his town and county and served for a time in the regular army. He enlisted in the volunteers, serving for a time in a light battery, when he received an honorable discharge from the governor of his State, telling him he could do more good recruiting. He spent hundreds of dollars for the benefit of the government during the Civil war for recruiting, and in the Christian and Sanitary Commission for the benefit of wounded soldiers and their families that were left at home. Any one coming for aid was never turned away. Patriotic to a fault was the father of Abram M. McCollnrn.

    Notes:

    Hey, Char,

It was great hearing from a Lauer almost--sister-in-law! :-)

I checked my McCollum file and I found Thelma's obituary. I'll transcribe it for you.

    Thelma J. Schul
Cake judge, decorator for more than 25 years

SANBORN--Thelma J. (McCollum) Schul, 79, of Cambria Road died Friday (July 30, 1993) in Lockport Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Youngstown on July 6,1914, the daughter of Abrahm [Abram] Day and Minnie M. (Austin) McCollum, both now deceased.

For more than 25 years, Mrs. Schul was a professional cake decorator, instructor and judge at many international cake shows.

She is survived by her busband, Roy H. Schul of Sanborn; two sons, William D. [Day] Fedder and Carl E. Schul, both of Sanborn; four daughters, Joanne [or Joan] R. [Ruth] [Fedder] Brewer of Lowell, Ind., Judith K. [Kay] [Fedder] Heppner of North Tonawanda, Jeanne [Jeanne M. Fedder] of Rome, Ga, and Julie Ann Schul-Bliven of Lockport; 13 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephes.

She was the mother of Mary Jan Fedder, and sister of the late A. J. Melville and Kenneth McCollum.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Rhoney Funeral Home, 5983 Hoover Road, where services will be conducted at a time to be announced. Burial will be in Acacia Park Cemetery, Pendleton.

Note: I also have the obituary on her second husband Roy H. Schul in 1966. I'm certain that was a typo and was meant to be 1996 in that it said he was the widower of Thelm J. McCollum, who died on July 30, 1993.

Note: I don't have information on the date of Thelma's marriage to Patrick Fedder. However their first(?) child William Day Fedder was born Feb. 20, 1930.

I'm copying Mary with this message and when both of you receive it, let me know of your connections to the McCollum family. Yes Mary I'm certain that the Town of Porter families descend from Scotland; however as hard as I tried, we can't find a definite connection. The farthest back we could go is to Joseph McCollum, born February 24, 1785 in either NJ or PA. Probably NJ.

I have Thelma's pedigree in my genealogy database and I'll send it to both of you if you wish.

This is pretty cool, isn't it?? :-)
