Evening News of the Tonawandas Apr 26, 1919
Ferdinand Achterberg, 81 years old died yesterday afternoon at his home on the Niagara Falls boulevard at Wurlitzer after a long illness. Besides his wife, three sons, Charles Achterberg of the town of Wheatfield. Ernest and Gustav Achterberg of North Tonawanda, two daughters, Mrs Augusta Luther and Mrs Albert Maertin of the Tonawandas, 28 grandchildren and five great, grandchildren survive. The funeral
will be held Wednesday afternoon from the late residence- at 1:30 o'clock and a half hour later from St John's church at St Johnsburg. Burial will be in St John's cemetery.

Mrs. Augusta Luther Passes Unexpectedly
Mrs. Augusta E. Luther, widow of Adolph O. Luther, died suddenly yesterday in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edward Mang, 8731 Buffalo avenue. Mrs. Luther, who was 75. formerly resided in North Tonawanda but had made her home with her daughter here for the last three and one-half years. Besides her daughter, she Ls survived by three sons, Edward and Norman Luther, both of North Tonawanda, and Walter, of Tonawai\da; .two grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Anna Maertan, of North Tonawanda, and three brothers, Carl AcbVrberg, of Beach Ridge, N. Y., and Ernest and Gustave Achterberg, of North Tonawanda. Ernest F. Achterberg, 68, died yesterday afternoon at his home, 1107 Oliver street He was born in Germany and had resided here the past 60 years. He was a member of St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed church. Surviving are his wife, Ida; two daughters, Mrs. John F. Susty and Mrs. Edward C. Janowsky; a son, Ernest J., and two grandchildren. Other survivors are two brothers, Charles of Pickard's Bridge and Gustav of North Tonawanda, and a sister, Mrs. Anna Maerten of North Tonawanda. Gustav Achterberg of 57 Fredericka St. died Thursday evening in the DeGraff Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He is survived by a brother, Charles, of the

WERTH - Albert J. Werth, 86, of the Town of Cambria, Sunday (January 11, 1981) at Lockport Memorial Hospital. Mr. Werth was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, a former employee of Allan Herschell, a member of Gratwick Hose Co., the Firemen's Benevolent Assoc., the Sanbornites Senior Citizens and the Senior Citizen Friendship Club of Sanborn. He is survived by four step-sons. Mr. Werth Dies

The death of Norman Werth, 22 years old, Saturday night at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Werth of the Niagara Falls boulevard at St. Johnsburg, was Investigated yesterday by Coroner J. E. Helwig. Werth was taken with a dizzy spell and headaches Friday. Saturday noon he became speechless and grew rapidly worse despite the efforts of several physicians. Werth was unable to swallow. His temperature and pulse were normal and his symptoms so cloudy that the physicians decided to notify the coroner. Dr. Helwig stated yesterday that death was undoubtedly due to natural causes and that no autopsy would be performed.

Besides his parents Werth Is survived by one brother, Albert Werth of North Tonawanda, and seven sisters, Mrs. Edward Kick of Niagara Falls, Mrs. Waldemar Roggow of North Tonawanda, Mrs. William Pankow of St.Johnsburg, Mrs. William Pelkey of Tonawanda and the Misses Hilda, Erma and Esther Werth of St Johnsburg.

The funeral will be held this afternoon at two o'clock from the residence and half an hour later from St. John's church, Rev. Walter Thlemecke officiating. Interment will be In St John's cemetery.

Believed to have been the victim of a heart attack, Benjamin
Achterberg, 23 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs,
Charles Achterberg, Tonawanda Creek road, town of Amherst,
sank in the Barge Canal while swimming with a number
of other young people at Pickard's Bridge early last evening.
The body was recovered IS
minutes later by members of the
North Amherst Fire company, of
which the youth was a member.
An inhilator was Used by the
First Aid squad. of the Eggertsville
Fire company in an unsuccessful
attempt to restore him.
Physicians said that no water
was found in the man's lungs,
giving rise to the belief that he
was the victim of a heart attack.
Not Expert Swimmer
Achterberg was not an expert
swimmer,..He had been swimming
with other youths of Pickard's
Bridge in the canal all Summer
and was considered able to hand-
le himself fairly well in the
aquatic sport.
The point where he went down
was less than 1,00 feet from the
Achterberg home and only a short
distance east of the bridge over
the canal in the small settlement.
Ria Survivors
Besides his parents the youth
is survived by two brothers,
Leonard and Maynard, at home,
and two sisters, Mrs. Jacob Dexheimer,
town of Wheatfield, and
Lorna, at home.
Medical examiner Charles E
Long was called. The body was
removed to Hamp's morgue or
Adam street. Dr. Long has not
issued a certificate of death.
The funeral will be held Friday
afternoon at 2 o'clock from the
residence and at 2;30 o'clock at the
St. Paul's church in Martinsville
