The Rev. Arthur H. Schmoyer, D.D., 79, of 427
Cherry Lane, Lewiston, pastor emeritus of Zion Lutheran
Church here and a clergyman for more than 50
years, died early Sunday (March 3, 1968) in St. Petersburg,
Fla.
Dr. Schmoyer, who had been
vacationing in Florida for the
last two months, died in Mound
Park Hospital after a short illness.
A native of the small community
of Albertus, Pa., he camp
to Niagara Falls in 1931 and
was pastor of Zion Lutheran
Church here from then until
1958 when he became pastor
emeritus.
Dr. Schmoyer was one of the
best known clergymen in the
Niagara Falls area and was
active in many civic and religious
organizations for more
than 30 years.
Dedicated Christian.
. He was once described by the
late Msgr. P. J. Tronolone, dean
of Niagara County Roman Cath-
olic clergy, - as "a dedicated
Christian whose service to his
parish and to humanity is a les-
son in devotion- to-us-all."
Dr. Schmoyer was graduated
from the Allentown (Pa.) Preparatory
School in 1906 and. received
a B.A. degree from Muhlenberg
College in 1910.
In May, 1913, he was graduated
from the Mt. Airy Lutheran
Seminary in Philadelphia and
his first assignment .was to the
Church of the Good Shepherd
at Weehawken, N.J., where he
served for 15 years. He then
became pastor of Zion Lutheran
Church here. Dr. Schmoyer
retired from all pastoral duties
in 1961.
He was. long active in affairs
of the International Center and
Girls Club here and served on
its board for more than 25
years.
He also served with the Council
of Social Agencies and the
United Givers Fund and its predecessor,
the Niagara Falls
Community Chest. He was active
in the Niagara Council of
Churches the Retired Men's
Club and the Golden Age or-
ganization.
Earlier in his career, Dr.
Schmoyer served on several
committees of the United Lutheran
Synod of New York and
also served on the committee
for the examination of candidates
for ordination and was
chairman of the board of Trinity
College, Washington, D.C.
During the celebration of his
25 th anniversary of his pas-
torate at Zion Lutheran, Dr.
Schmoyer was honored by more
than 300 members and friends
of. the church at a testimonial
dinner.
At time of his retirement he
was granted a lifetime honorarium
by his church in recognition
of his long service.
During an Interview in 1964,
Dr. Schmoyer said- that churches
must make greater efforts
to impress mankind with their
mission.
They must make a deeper
impact upon the world," he said,
adding that he saw signs that
this goal is. being reached, notably
in the fields of social relations
and civil rights.
Funeral Wednesday
In addition to his wife, Mrs.
Maude L. Schmoyer, he is survived
by a daughter, Mrs. Joseph
(Gertrude) Darrah, Hudson;
Ohio,; three sons, Paul
J. Schmoyer, Lewiston; Arthur
R. and Charles S. Schmoyer,
both of Washington D,C; 12
grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.
Friends may call at Zion Lutheran
Church on Tuesday from
11 a.m. to 9 p.m.. Funeral services
will be held Wednesday at 2
p.m. at the church, with arrangements
being made by Otto
Redanz Funeral Home. Burial
will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

YOUNGSTOWN -
Paul J. Schmoyer, age 90, of Youngstown and Ft. Myers, FL, died on Monday, July 7, 2014 in Mt. St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, after a lengthy illness. Paul was born on May 2, 1924 in Weehawken, NJ, the son of the late Rev. Dr. Arthur and Maude (Smith) Schmoyer.
A Veteran of WW II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Radar Mechanic from August of 1943 to his honorable discharge in March of 1946. Paul was the recipient of the American Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, and the WW II Victory Medal. Following his discharge he married Betty J. (Swift) Schmoyer on August 16, 1946.
A Contractor, Paul was the founder and owner of Schmoyer Co. Inc. in Youngstown. He built Willow Beach RV Campground in Youngstown and the Townhouses of Youngstown, Inc. Paul was instrumental in the design and building of the Cannon Design Building on Grand Island, as well as Lutheran Church of The Messiah in Lewiston and two other Churches in Niagara Falls. He served on the Board of Directors for "The Landings" in Ft. Myers, FL; was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church; a charter member of the Lewiston Kiwanis Club; and a former member of the Niagara Frontier Country Club. He enjoyed golfing and boating.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; his children, Jeffrey (Diane) Schmoyer of Pittsburgh, PA, Kyle (Harold) Sachs of Derry, NH, and Stephen (Denise) Schmoyer of Youngstown; his grandchildren, Adam, Matthew, Christine, Colin, Christopher, Benjamin, and Sarah; as well as three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Gertrude Darrah; and two brothers, Arthur and Charles Schmoyer.
A Memorial Service, followed by Military Honors, will be held on Friday, July 25, 2014 at 4:00 PM in the Lutheran Church of The Messiah, 915 Oneida St., Lewiston with the Rev. Thomas Mason officiating. There will be no prior visitation. Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of The Messiah, 915 Oneida St., Lewiston, NY 14092. Arrangements have been entrusted to HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Sts., Lewiston.
