    Mark Joseph Licata

    Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

    ASHLAND, VA -
Mark Joseph Licata left us, unexpectedly and much too soon, on Sunday, May 18th. He was born, the middle boy of six children, on August 20, 1960, in Lockport, NY. After graduating from DeSales Catholic High School and he put himself through Carnegie Mellon University with an Undergraduate Degree in Chemistry and a Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in polymers.
"I just want to say one word to you. Just one word. ...Are you listening? Plastics." The Graduate.
Mark was relentless in his pursuit of the perfect biomedical product - developed with patient input - that would be lifesaving when the patient needed it most. His career spanned 25 years, starting at Bayer USA and most recently at Kaleo Pharma in Richmond, VA, where he was Vice President of Industrialization and Quality. Mark never mentioned his accomplishments, and most friends and family had no idea that he had 25 individual patents, and was listed as an inventor on about 130 patents in all.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Anne Elizabeth Kenney and Peter Joseph Licata; and his sister, Catherine Grace Licata. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Lisa Stiles Licata; his daughter, Meredith McKenzie O'Brien Licata; his son, Robertson Whittier Licata; his brothers, Peter John Licata and Michael Paul Licata (Nancy); his sisters, Elizabeth Anne Licata (Alan Bigelow) and Mary Patricia Licata; his niece and Goddaughter, Courtney Leigh Licata; his nephews, George Edward Robertson Stiles, III and Ethan James Sutton Stiles; as well as many in-laws and out-laws. He is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. He will be missed by his extended families at Kaleo Pharma, The Virginia Biotech Park, and CMU, as well as by those who shared his devotion to ultimate frisbee, disc golf, ice hockey, and surfing. (His favorite surf spot was Ho'okipa in Maui.) A lifelong extrovert, Mark had friends around the world that he met on ski slopes or wherever he happened to be. He will be remembered fondly by all of them.
Services will be held on Saturday, May 31st, at 11 AM at St. James the Less Episcopal Church at 125 Beverly Rd., Ashland, VA. There will not be a reception at the Church because Mark wanted a party, which will follow at the Licata's. Please bring a change of clothes/bathing suit, a 6-pack of your favorite beer and "Mark Stories" to share. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Church he dearly loved, The Fork Episcopal Church, 12566 Old Ridge Rd, Doswell, VA 23047 or a charity he was passionate about, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, at www.cff.org/getinvolved/manywaystogive/makeadonation/.
