Cindy Hebeler, cancer victim, research volunteer by Lou Michel
    Nov. 2, 1963 - June 27, 2007
Cindy A. Hebeler, the fiancee of WBEN talk show host Sandy Beach Wednesday after a long battle with a form of leukemia that usually strikes older people. Miss Hebeler, 43, was a woman of many firsts, but it was her willingness to work with the medical researchers at Roswell Park Cancer Institute that may prove to be an enduring legacy in helping others. At 28 years old, she was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, a slow moving type of leukemia that is known to afflict older people who usually succumb to other ailments before the leukemia becomes fatal. Loved ones said Miss Hebeler allowed medical workers to track the progression of the disease in her so that they could gain insights into how it affects younger people. "Cindy was the youngest person in the world diagnosed with CLL," Beach said in praising his fiance's willingness to permit researchers to work with her over the years. Miss Hebeler, a lifelong resident of Pendleton, had devoted her life to helping cancer patients, first working as a radiation therapist and then, more recently, completing a rigorous two-year course of study to become a state certified medical dosimetrist. As a dosimetrist, she worked with physicists and radiologists to calibrate computerized radiation equipment used in the treatment of cancer patients. She worked very hard at the end of her life. Only 20 percent pass the certification test, which is given only once a year worldwide," Beach explained. Miss Hebeler had been employed at Buffalo Radiation and Oncology and had begun her career at Roswell, where she received medical treatment over the years. Her family members expressed gratitude for the care she received at Roswell. "She had the best possible treatment you can get on earth at Roswell, and we want to thank them. If they couldn't save her, no one could," Beach said. Five years ago, she received a bone marrow donor transplant from her brother, Michael Hebeler, "who gave her five more years of life," Beach said. And despite all of the health issues in her life, Miss Hebeler knew how to have fun. A motorcycle enthusiast, she traveled to California and enrolled in an advanced class for motorcycle driving at the Laguna Seca raceway and along with one other woman passed the rigorous course. Her family owns Hebeler Sales and Service, a motorcycle dealership in Pendleton. She also enjoyed taking photographs. Besides Beach and her brother, she is survived by her parents, William and Carole Hebeler, and another brother, Joseph. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 168 Chestnut St., Lockport, following prayers at 9:30 in Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee St., Lockport.
