    Gerald A. Shaffer
    Gerald A. Shaffer, age 79, of Witmer Road in Wheatfield, died February 24, 2002 in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Town of Lewiston, NY. Born in DuBois, PA on February 12, 1923, to Jesse and Hazel (Bailey) Shaffer. He served in the United States Army from 1942 until 1945, in the 475th Infantry Regiment in the China, Burma and India Theatres. While serving in Burma, he was head of communications platoon and was also a forward observer for an artillery battalion. For that, he received the Bronze Star and his unit eventually received a Presidential Citation from Harry S. Truman. He was stationed in China when the war ended and was a Staff Sergeant at the time of his discharge. In 1946, he was united in marriage to Mary Horne and they moved to this area. in 1949. He was employed at International Mineral & Chemical Company for 25 years and then worked al Hooker, now Occidental Petroleum, as a boiler operator. He became Chief Engineer and Supervisor of boiler operations during the start up of the EFW (energy from waste) Plant, retiring in 1985. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, St. Johnsburg Fire Company since 1962 and a lifetime member of the National Association of Power Engineers. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and especially loved spending time at his camp in Potter County, PA. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Shaffer; four daughters, Bonnie (Roger) Lemke, Connie (Fred) Robinson, Linda (Timothy) Tomsen, all of Wheatfield, Barbara (William) Jakobi of Lewiston; two brothers, Earl Shaffer of Niagara Falls, Blaine Shaffer of DuBois, PA; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Bud A. Shaffer; and two sisters, Dorothy Reese and Glenna Lee Shaffer. Friends may call at the DuBois Funeral Home, 2436 Niagara Road, (Bergholz) in Wheatfield on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Ronald D. Oravec on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in St. John Lutheran Church, corner of Niagara Falls Blvd. and Ward Rd. Interment in Niagara Falls Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church or to the American Heart Association.

Tomsen; a beloved cat, Odo; her aunts, Bonnie Lemke, Connie (Fred) Robinson, Barbara (Bill) Jakobi, Margot Tomsen, Peter (Kim) Tomsen, Ann Tomsen, and many cousins. She was predeceased by her grandparents, Justus and Margaret Tomsen and Gerald and Mary Shaffer, and her uncles, Jim Tomsen, Jon Tomsen, and Roger Lemke. Laura loved her family and remembered each of them by calling on their birthdays and singing Happy Birthday. If she met you once and you told her your birthday, she would never forget it. She also had loving nicknames for her favorite people. She loved going on the WNY Paranormal Society's outings and to Bandits' and Sabres' games. She was a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan though, much to her Dad's consternation. She loved country music and went to many concerts in the area. Laura was an upbeat positive person who would always see the bright side of things. Laura was a certified Nursing Assistant and worked at the Buffalo Veterans Hospital. She was a US Navy Veteran. A Memorial Service to celebrate Laura's life will be held at the Church of the Nativity, United Church of Christ, 1530 N. Colvin Blvd., on Thursday at 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Suicide Prevention at Crisis Services Foundation, which was very dear to Laura's heart. Please share your online condolences by visiting
