    SANBORN - Robert L. Bower, former Sanborn postmaster, died Sunday in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. He was 85.
    His was the longest continuous appointment as head of the U.S. Post Office in Sanborn. He retired in 1979 after 22 years of service. He was appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

    The Niagara Falls native attended LaSalle High School.

    He served during World War II in the Philippines as a machinist in the Army Air Forces.

    He also owned and operated a machine and welding shop for 11 years prior to his postal service.

    Mr. Bower was past commander of Sanborn Post 969, American Legion; past president and a charter member of the Sanborn Lions Club; past deputy state master of the New York State Grange; past master of Niagara County Pomona Grange; past master of Subordinate Grange; and past noble grand of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

    He had played trumpet in the Sanborn Fire Company Band for 25 years was a member and served as trustee of the Sanborn Fire Company, a trustee of the Sanborn Exempts Firemen's Benevolent Association and a trustee of the Mount View Cemetery Association. He was a member of the Sanbornite Senior Citizens and the Newfane Golden Agers Club and a life member of the Disabled Veterans of World War II.

    He won numerous bowling trophies and also liked to hunt, fish and travel.

    He was a longtime member of Hope United Methodist Church of Sanborn, where he had served as a trustee and chairman of the administrative board for many years.

    Survivors include his wife of 62 years, the former Miriam L. Schul; a daughter, Patricia Baker of Dayton, OH; a sister, L. Jean Gow of Lockport; and two grandchildren.

    Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Rhoney Funeral Home, 5893 Hoover Road. Burial will be in North Ridge Cemetery, Cambria.
