John Wendler, Amusement Plant President Dies
NORTH TONAWANDA. Dec. 15 - John Wendler. 82, president of the world's largest amusement ride factory, died yesterday following a heart attack at his home, 58 Falconer street. Mr. Wendler became interested in merry-go-rounds while still a boy on his father's farm near Wolcottsburg. Two German immigrants were building the county's first carrousel in a neighbor's barn. He never lost that youthful enthusiasm for the merry go round and in 1899, he left the farm to become a pony painter in the Armitage Herschell company here. He worked up through various jobs to become president and treasurer of the concern, now the Allan Herschell Company, Inc. The compant makes several other rides. Mr. Wendler was a member of St Matthew's Lutheran Church and the Columbia Volunteer Hook & Ladder Company 1. He was also a member of many showman's and carnival organizations including the Showman's League of America, the National Association of Amusement Parks, Pools, and Beaches, and the American Carnival Association. His is survived by a daughter, Miss Mary Wendler, of the Falconer St address, a brother August, Medina, three sisters, Mrs. William Bald, and Mrs. Elmer Altrogge, both of Clarence Center, and Mrs. William Bollman, Lockport. His wife Lizette Wollenberg Wendler died two years ago. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 pm at the Wattengel Funeral Home with the rev. Paul Gassman, pastor of St Matthews Church officiating. burial will be in Elmlawn Cemetery.

LOCKPORT - Gordon H. Bald passed away on June 2, 2014 in Briody Health Care Facility. Born in Lockport on May 13, 1930, he was the son of Herbert and Mildred (Zimmerman) Bald.

Gordon graduated from Lockport High School with a degree in vocational machine shop. After serving with distinction in the Korean War as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corp., he worked for a while afterwards building up his engineering skills. In 1955 he, along with two other good friends, started Diversified Manufacturing, which continues to be a thriving business today, providing jobs for many people.

He loved sailing and was a former fleet captain in the Olcott Yacht Club. He was an avid runner who had done several 13-mile runs, a clever inventor and woodworker, a lover of nature and classical music, golf, and anything challenging. His favorite expression was, "Just take the bull by the horns!" He had a playful childlike sense of wonder, an adventurous spirit and enthusiasm for life. He was considered by all who knew him as the most caring, loving, kind, honest, industrious, generous man to ever walk this earth.

Gordon is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Glorian; daughters, Deborah (Terrence) Gallagher, Dr. Susan (Peter) Marion; sons, David (Anne) Bald and Robert (Diana) Bald; stepdaughters, Judy (Charles) Weidenborner, Sharon (Chet) Basiewicz, Susan (Peter) Holguin, Dawn Hammond; stepsons, Larry (Peg) Simons and Ronald Simons. Also grandchildren, Nathaniel Gallagher, Elizabeth (Gallagher) Chesko, Andrew Gallagher, Kyle Gallagher, Carly Corriere, Rain Bald, Gordon A. Bald, Nichaela Bald, Austin Bald, Lee Marion, Dean Marion, Gregory Brock, Stephanie Brock, Paul Greiner, Drew Brigham and Spencer Brigham, and several great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for family and friends will be held Saturday, June 7, at 11 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church, 67 Saxton Street, Lockport. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of one's choice to honor Gordon's generous spirit.

Obituary of Carole Hebeler

Carole Hebeler passed away Saturday March 19, 2016 in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. Born in Lockport, on March 29, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Dorothy Maass Altrogge. Carole served as the secretary and treasurer for Hebeler's Sales and Service, which she had started with her family 48 years ago. She enjoyed gardening, Nascar, going to the Casino, and especially spending time with her family and friends.


Carole is survived by her husband, William L. Hebeler of Pendleton; mother of Joseph (Joan) Hebeler of Wilson, Michael "Butch" (Christa) Hebeler of Pendleton and the late Cindy A. Hebeler. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jarred (Betty) Hebeler, Brianne Hebeler, Jenna Hebeler and Dillon Hebeler. Carole was the sister of the late Barbara Blair.

Barbara was instrumental in forming the Non-traditional Student Group at U.B. She enjoyed reading, quilting and especially being a grandmother.
