    ALLENTOWN-William J.
    Bannister, 90, of 5827 Allen St., Al-
    lentown, died Monday (Sept. 10,
    2001) shortly after arrival at Jones
    Memorial Hospital.
    Born April 6, 1911 in Buffalo,
    he was the son of James and Lulu
    Ward Bannister.
    On Oct. 2, 1937 at St. Matheis
    Church in East Aurora, he married
    Barbara W. Swan who died Oct.
    15, 1998.
    He was a graduate of Fosdick
    Masten Park High School and also
    attended the University of Buffalo.
    He worked for the former Sweet
    Kleen Laundry in Sales and Man-
    agement from 1930 to 1945.
    In 1947, he and George O'Don-
    nell purchased the J.R. Owen &
    Co. in Wellsville.
    They owned and operated that
    business until their retirement in
    1973.
    In 1974, he worked as a meat
    cutter for Super Duper, part-time,
    until it closed in 1986.
    He enjoyed all sports, especially
    golf and bowling, where he was a
    40 year member of the American
    Bowlling Conference.
    He and his wife spent many win-
    ters in Florida and their summers in
    Canada. He was active in the Allen-
    town community. A life member of
    the Southwestern, Allegany County
    and Allentown Volunteer Fire Com-
    pany where he had been their secre-
    tary for 30 years.
    He was also a 50 year member
    of the Masonic Lodge 230 in Wells-
    ville. He was a school board mem-
    ber of the allentown School for
    eight years, after that school closed,
    he spent 10 years as a member of
    the Scio School Board.
    He was a member of the Allen-
    town United Methodist Church
    where he was a member of the
    board, lay speaker, and finance
    chairman for many years.
    He is survived by two sons, W.
    James (Paula) Bannister of Brock-
    port and Donald R. (Rita) Bannister
    of Irondequoit; one daughter, Joan
    (Jim) Hand of Wellsville; six grand-
    children; two great-grandchildren;
    several nieces and nephews.
    He was predeceased by a sister,
    Margaret "Jean" Bannister in 1999.
    Friends are invited to a funeral
    service at 3 p.m. Friday at the Allen-
    town United Methodist Church.
    There will be no prior visitation.
    Rev. Diane Cox will officiate.
    Burial at Woodlawn Cemetery,
    Wellsville.
    Memorials may be sent to the Al-
    lentown United Methodist Church,
    P.O. Box 273 Allentown, N.Y.
