Martin Karkau, 89 years old, one of the pioneer residents of North Tonawanda, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Schultz, at No. 140 Keil street, this morning after a brief illness. He was born in Germany. Three daughters, Mrs. Schultz and Mrs. William Janowsky of North Tonawanda and Mrs. William Thoman of Ellsworth, Wis; two sons, Gustave and John Karkau of North Tonawanda, and one brother, William Karkau of North Tonawanda survive. The funeral will be held from the Friedens church on Sunday afternoon.

Martin Karkau, eighty nine years old a resident of the Tonawandas for many years, died early this morning at his home at No. 140 Keil street. His death was unexpected and followed an illness with which he was stricken last evening. Mr. Karkau was born in Germany and came to America at the age of fifty-two. He located in the Tonawandas. where he continued to live the rest of his life. He is survived by two sons. John and Gustave Karkau of North Tonawanda, three daughters Mrs. William Janowsky and Mrs. Fred Schultz of North Tonawanda and Mrs. William Thom of Ellsworth, Wis., fifteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one brother, William Karkau of North Tonawanda. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the late residence and half an hour later from Frieden's church at the corner of Vandervoort and Schenk streets, Rev. K. A. Schultz officiating. Burial will be made in the Frieden's cemetery. Dr. M. F. Nolan, who was called to attend Mr. Karkau last night, round the man suffering from a blockage of some of the vital organs.

Contractor Dies at 52
Rites Tomorrow for John Karkau, Life-long Twin City Resident
NORTH TONAWANDA - Oct. 25 - John Karkau, 52 years old, building contractor, died Saturday night at his home, 94 Keil street. He was a life-long resident of North Tonawanda. He was a member of the Friedens church, the North Tonawanda Labor association, the Active Hose compnay and the North Tonawanda firemen's benevolent association. Survivng are his wife, Minnie, nee Ostwald; two sons, Laverne and Milford; a daughter, Loraine, and a sister, Mrs. Fred Schultz.
Rites will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock from the residence. The Rev. Theodore Mayer will officiate and burial will be in Friedens cemetery

MRS. AUGUSTA JANOWSKY DIES SUDDENLY FROM HEART ATTACK
Mrs. Augusta Janowsky, 67, died suddenly late last night at her home, 384 Stanley street, following a brief heart attack. Until a few minutes before her death Mrs. Janowsky was conversing with members of her family and was apparently in the best of health. Born in Germany, Mrs. Janowsky had resided in North Tonawanda for the past 48 years. She was a member of the Frieden's church and the Ladies' Aid society and Martha Sewing circle of the church. Surviving are a husband William; three daughters, Miss Alvina Janowsky, Mrs. William Garlapow, and Mrs. Gustave Garlapow; a son, William H. Janowsky, six grandchildren, all of North Tonawanda; two sisters, Mrs. Fred Thom, Ellsworth, Wis., and Mrs. Fred Schulz, North Tonawanda, and two brothers, Gustave and John Karkau, both of North Tonawanda. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Frieden's church, Rev. Theo. Mayer officiating.

Irving Schultz - Irving M. Schultz, 60. of 1264 Ruie Road, died this Sunday (Feb. 23, 1964) in Millard Fillmore Hospital, Buffalo, after an illness of one week. He was a life long resident of this city and was employed as a designer at the Harrison Radiator Corp. Division, General Motors, Lockport, for 34 years. He was a member of the Payne Avenue Christian Church and a member of the Buffalo and Tonawanda Board of Realtors. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Wythe Schultz; a daughter, Mrs. Paul Benton; a son, Donald I. Schultz and six grandchildren, all of this city. The family will be present from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Wattengel Funeral Home where services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday by Rev. Noel Blankenship. Burial will be in Friedens Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Lobien) Garlapow; one daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Linda) Beckensall of the Town of Pendleton; one brother, Leroy Garlapow of No. Tona.; one sister, Mrs. Marge Stevens of Niagara Falls; two granddaughters, Rhonda and Andrea Beckensall. LeRoy W. Garlapow, 93, of North Tonawanda Wednesday (March 14, 2012) in Medina Memorial Hospital. Roy was born in North Tonawanda on November 6, 1918 to William and Emma (Janowsky) Garlapow. Roy was a Army Veteran serving in WWII. He was a active member of Friedens Church where he sang in the chior. He retired as a stock clerk from Remington Rand. Leroy was predeceased by his sister and brother Marjorie (Raymond) Stevens, and Norman F. (Dorothy) Garlapow, he is survived by a nice Lind Beckenshal and many cousins. Burial was held in Friedends Cemetery.

BEATRICE M. ZIEHL
Beatrice M. Ziehl, 36, of 105 Keil St., died yesterday in DeGraff Memorial Hospital after a short illness. She was a lifelong resident of North Tonawanda, a member of Rosedale Rebekah Lodge 386 and of the Past Noble Grands' Club. She is survived by her husband, Curt C, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Dexheimer. Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Wattengel Funeral Home. The Rev. Carl Edward Berges will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

JANOWSKY - Dale W. "Jake"
Passed away on March 1, 2022, at the age of 82, in his home on Grand Island, NY. Born on December 22, 1939, in North Tonawanda, NY, to William and Ida (Karkau) Janowsky, he is survived by his beloved wife Barbara "Bonnie" Adornetto; his three children, Bill (Timberley) Janowsky, Lynn (James) Nohe, and Cheryl (Marcelino) Vicente; and his four loving grandchildren, Faith, Anthony, Gabrielle, and Olivia. Before retirement, Dale was a professor of accounting at Buffalo State College and Niagara University. If you knew Dale, you remember his quick wit, elaborate storytelling, and sharp mind. His children have many memories of losing to him at pinochle and other card games around the dining room table. His grandchildren will think of him with a sparkle in his blue eyes and a cookie in his front shirt pocket. Loved by every dog he met, Dale enjoyed long walks at Buckhorn or Beaver Island with his furry companions throughout the years. After retiring, he and his wife Bonnie spent many winter months in St. George Island, FL. Dale requested a private family memorial celebrating his life. There will be no formal service. Please raise a glass and toast to his memory.
