Miss Maria F. Witmer, 82 years old,
a member of one of the oldest and most
prominent families in the Town of Niagara,
died this morning at the home
of her sister, Mrs. Andrew Laur, on the
Lockport road. The funeral will be
held from the Laur home Saturday afternoon
at 3 o'clock, daylight saving
time. Burial will be in the Witmer
cemetery.
Miss Witmer was born on the old
Witmer homestead on the Lockport
road, about a mile east of the city, the
daughter of Joseph and Catherine Witmer,
pioneer residents of this district.
She had'lived in the Town of Niagara
all her life and for the past 40 years
lesided with her sister. She was a
member of the Church of Christ, . Niagara
avenue and Tenth street, and
was widely known and highly respected
throughout the district.
Her death was the result of an Injury
sustained when she fell at her home
and fractured her hip on Feb. 22. She
was in the hospital for nine weeks after
the accident and later was removed
to her sister's home but her advanced
age hindered her recovery.

Franklin Pletcher, of this city, died at
3 o'clock yesterday afternoon In Rochester.
The funeral will be held from
the Cornell and Daggett funeral chapel,
Main street, at 2:30 p. m. Saturday.
Burial will be In Rlverdale cemetery.
Mrs. Pletcher was born In the old
Wltmer homestead on the Lockport
road, four miles east of this city. She
was the daughter of Joseph and. Catherine
Wltmer, pioneer residents of Niagara
county. She had lived In Niagara
county for over 60 years and was well
known and highly respected. She was
most active In the affairs of the Church
of Christ, Niagara avenue and Tenth
street, and was also an ardent member
of the Willard W. C. T. U. She was
honored a few years ago by being made
a life member of the national W. C. T.
U.
For the past ten years years. Pletcher
has ben living with hef daughter and
family In Rochester. Her death follow-
ed a lingering Illness of four years,
which she bore with great patience and
Christian fortitude. She is survived by
her daughter, Mrs. Charles Eshelman,
of Rochester; a slater, Mrs. A. R, Laur,
of this city; and four grandchildren,
Carl W. Dorothy and Russell Eshelmah,
of Rochester, and Mrs. John I. Ormond,

LOOKPORT, Nov. 20.-Refusal of
the attending physician to sign a death
certificate, yesterday moved Dr. P. A.
Klttinger, coroner, to announce that he
will hold an inquest in the death of
Walter J. Kline, 53 years old, who died
on Saturday after several weeks' Illness.
Although Kline was critically ill with
a carbuncle on his neck, only Christian
Science practitioners were called until a
few hours before the man's death. Coroner
Klttinger said he had been told.
Dr. H. H. Mayne, called after Kline
lapsed into unconsciousness, refused to
sign a death certificate, according to
the coroner.
At an autopsy held yesterday, upon
direction of Coroner Klttinger, physicians
found that the man died of ab-
cesses on the liver and spleen attributed
to poison from the carbuncle,
which was six Inches in diameter. Drs.
F. W. Barry and J. O. Heal performed
the autopsy

Loving mother of Caren M. Woods of Amherst; proud grandmother of Tammy M. (Shawn) Wolcott, Roy V. (Jennifer) Woods and Connie D. Bower, age 89, of Sanborn, NY passed away Monday, January 7, 2008 at her residence.Mrs. Bower was born in Niagara Falls, Niagara County, NY on April 8, 1918; she was the daughter of the late August and Flora (Laur) Schul. She attended local schools and was a 1963 graduate of the LaSalle High School. Miriam worked as a telephone operator for the former Sanborn Telephone Company, until 1947; then worked at the Spirella Company, in Niagara Falls, and later for the former LeVan's Grocery Store in Sanborn.She was married to her husband, Robert L. Bower on November 22, 1941, in Niagara Falls, Niagara County, NY, and they lived all of there married life in Sanborn. They were married for 62 years. Mr. Bower was the Postmaster in Sanborn for many years prior to his death in 2004.Miriam was active in her church and in various local and civic organizations. She served as president of the Sanborn American Legion Auxiliary, lecturer of the Pekin Grange and Niagara County Pomona Grange, and belonged to the Sanbornite Senior Citizens and Newfane Golden Ager's Club. She was a longtime member of Hope United Methodist Church, and had always sang in the Church Choirs, since age 15; she was also and active in the Methodist Church Women's Group. Raymond served in the Army during WWII and was stationed in Australia. After the service, he worked for many years as maintenance worker for Hooker Chemical Corp., and retired in 1979. He was also the proprietor of the Fairlane Motel, 9050 Pine Avenue, Niagara Falls, Niagara County, NY, for 30 years. After retirement he moved to Tavares, FL and together with his wife, Ruth, enjoyed many years there. Raymond was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Alice (Townsend) Schul; two brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his children, Susan (Schul) Pillow of Tavares, FL, Robert Schul of Pembroke Pines, FL, Richard Schul of Tucson, AZ and Christie (Schul) Michaelides of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Married Roger Reedy on June 15, 1946, and moved to Rockford a few years later. While raising her 5 children, Ruth occasionally worked as a banquet waitress at the Faust Hotel. Once her children were grown, Ruth worked for St. Patrick School as the Director of the Resource Center for 15 years. After retiring, she went on to volunteer at St. Patrick and later at St. James School working with students. Until recently, she was very active in Charity Guild making quilted lap blankets for people in nursing homes, blankets for the homeless and collecting baby items for those in need. Ruth loved playing bridge, dancing and spending time with her family and friends. She will always be remembered for her contagious smile, kind spirit and great sense of humor. Anita was born in Niagara Falls, NY on December 25, 1923, a daughter of the late August L. and Flora (Laur) Schul. Anita was a member of the Living Water Community Church and participated in many activities. She was a 1942 graduate of LaSalle High School and had worked for 10 years until 1979 at Hillers Fruit and Vegetable stand. Anita attended the Newfane and Barker Senior Citizens. She was married June 29, 1946, to Aubrey Ward who predeceased her in July of 1983.

Anita was predeceased by son Donald, grandson Derek Ward and 7 siblings. She is survived by her children Daniel (Darlene) Ward of Friendship, NY, David (Rosemary) Ward of Middleport, NY, Diane House of Keystone Heights, FL, and Denise (Anthony) Rodrigues of Tracy, CA: 18 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and friends in the community.

Anita’s life will be celebrated at the Living Water Community Church 2569 Main Street Newfane, NY 14108 on Saturday January 13, at 11:00 followed by a luncheon at the church. Gerald Witmer Hewitt, Sr., of Niagara Falls, died Friday, May 23, 2008 in Mount St. Mary’s Hospital. He was 90. He was born with twin brother, Harold Cleghorn Hewitt on February 5, 1918 in Springville, NY, to the late Alan and Lena (Laur) Hewitt. Raised and worked with his father and five brothers on their dairy farm on Upper Mountain Road, Lewiston. The Hewitt farm supplied large quantities of milk daily to residents of the area. There were 40 Holsteins and milking was a seven day a week two times a day job. In addition the farm raised corn, oats and alfalfa to feed the cattle. The Hewitt boys worked hard and played hard all year round. They had softball, basketball and hockey teams and school work too! Gerald graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1935. In 1941, he started work at the Union Carbide National Plant in Niagara Falls and retired in 1981 with 40 years service. As a sportsman, he enjoyed golf and bowling for over 60 years. He was Hyde Park Golf Club Champion in 1951 and City Golf Champ in 1952. He was inducted into the Niagara Falls Men’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1995, with a lifetime average of 190 and many championship trophies added to his collection. “Jerry will be missed by his golf and card playing friends.” He is survived by a son, Gerald W. (Karen) Hewitt, Jr. of San Jose, CA; a daughter, Sandra (late Ronald) Granieri of Niagara Falls; three brothers, Alfred L. (Lola) Hewitt of Niagara Falls, Richard A. (Jocelyn) Hewitt of Lawrence, KS, Kenneth C. (Ruth) Hewitt of Tacoma, WA; five grandchildren, Melanie (John T.)Loss of Grand Island, Ronald J. (Jennifer) Granieri of Lansdowne, PA, Rebecca (Robert) Stone of Sylvania, OH, Rachel (Guy) Hunt of Rochester, Alicia L. Hewitt of San Jose, CA; eight great grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Rose M. Hewitt January 11, 1991; a granddaughter, Maria Carmela Granieri; and two brothers, twin, Harold and oldest brother, Donald (late Betty) Hewitt. Friends may call Tuesday after 11 AM in the LANE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 8622 Buffalo Avenue, where funeral services will be held at 1 PM. Interment will be in Acacia Park Cemetery, Pendleton, NY.

LAWRENCE, KS - Richard A. Hewitt of Lawrence, KS, passed away July 20, 2014.

Dick was born December 15, 1920 to Alan and Lena Hewitt of Lewiston, NY.

After growing up on the Hewitt Dairy Farm, he attended Niagara University and then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in February 1942. He served as a member of the 78th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force in the European Theatre during World War II, from 1943 to 1945. Richard also served in the Air Force Reserve and retired from that service as a Lt. Col. In 1962.

He received his BA in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan and was employed for many years at the Dupont Company in both New York State and Kansas, before retiring in 1982.

He married Lyn Rudd on August 29, 1947 in Cedarville, MI. She survives at home in Lawrence, KS. Other survivors include daughter, Donna Lyn Flory (Jim) of Lawrence, KS; son, Richard Wayne Hewitt (Linda Rauch) of Taos, NM; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one brother, Alfred L. Hewitt of Niagara Falls, NY. He was preceded in death by brothers, Donald Hewitt, Gerald Hewitt, Harold Hewitt and Kennith Hewitt.

A memorial service will be held on August 4, 2014, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. The family suggests memorials in his name to "Wounded Warrior Project" or a charity of donor's choice, and may be sent to the mortuary at www.warren-mcelwain.com.

Alfred L. Hewitt, 96, departed this life on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at his residence, while in the presence of his loving family.  Born on December 20, 1922 in Lewiston, NY, he was the son of the late Alan and Lena (Laur) Hewitt.  On January 1, 1943, he married the former Lola McGee in Niagara Falls, NY.  She predeceased him on January 29, 2009.
 
Al, as he was known to family and friends, was a lifelong area resident and graduated from LaSalle High School.  He proudly served in the United States Army, during World War II, from January 14, 1943 until his honorable discharge on December 28, 1945.  For 34 years, Al was employed as an Area Foreman for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, until he retired in 1982.  He, a child of God, was a congregant of Payne Avenue Christian Church and a member of Niagara Frontier Country Club.  Al enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, hunting, gardening and square dancing.  
 
Al is survived by daughters, Barbara (Peter) Baker, Linda (Greg) Mikolajek, Marjorie (Larry) Minor and Bonnie (Jim) Sands; 8 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by brothers, Gerald (late Rose) Hewitt, Richard (late Lynn) Hewitt, Kenneth (late Ruth) Hewitt, Donald (late Betty) Hewitt and Harold Hewitt.
 
Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-6 p.m. in the Chapel of OTTO REDANZ FUNERAL HOME, 2215 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY, where a funeral service will be held on Monday, February 4th at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Bob Fleming officiating.  Interment will follow in Acacia Park Cemetery, concluding with Military Honors.  In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to the Alzheimers Association.  Arrangements are under the direction of Michael R. UNIVERSITY PLACE, WA - Kennith C. Hewitt of University Place, WA, passed away Monday, June 30, 2014.

Ken was born April 28, 1929 to Alan and Lena Hewitt of Lewiston, NY. After growing up on the Hewitt dairy farm, Ken enlisted in the Army during WWII serving in post-war Japan. After returning from the service Ken married Louise "Ruth" Hewitt of Buffalo and they had three sons, Jay, Dane and Miles.

In 1971, the Hooker Chemical Company promoted and transferred Ken to Tacoma, WA. There the family became active members of The First Christian Church where Ken's greatest joy was singing in the church choir. In their leisure time Ken and Ruth were avid travelers and throughout their 58 years together they visited five continents and all 50 states.

Ken's beloved wife, Ruth, passed away in 2009 and he is survived by two older brothers, Richard (Lyn) of Kansas, Alfred of Niagara Falls, and by his three sons and their families. Internment services will be at the Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, WA on Friday, August 8th. Remembrances may be sent in Ken's name to The First Christian Church, 602 N. Orchard Street, Tacoma, WA 98406.
