December 3, 1930 - July 9, 2022

Fred Leonard “Papa Fred” Bruening, longtime area resident, passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2022 after a brief illness, he was 91.  He was born in Reid City, Pennsylvania on December 3, 1930, a son of the late Fredrick Luther and Viola Grace (Leonard) Bruening.  He attended school in Shanksville, Pennsylvania and eventually moved to Niagara Falls.
Fred was a unique and wonderful personality who would electrify and bring life to any place that he would go.  His sense of humor and the way he looked at life would leave everyone in a better mood than they were before his visit. He was always willing to help anybody with any project or problem.  He had enormous amounts of energy and was always doing something to keep himself occupied up until his last days when he was still operating his bulldozer on his farm.
He would take night classes but would become bored so he taught himself anything that he found interesting.  He was a skilled sheet metal fabricator, carpenter, stone mason, welder, electrician, stationary engineer and boilerman and was an expert in superheated steam generation and instrumentation.
Fred would use his ingenuity and imagination to improvise anything that he needed that would make a project easier or the process better.  He never actually saw a problem, only a solution and could create a tool, materials or anything needed to complete any project.  Nothing was ever wasted and he would regularly use old wire coat hangers as welding rods to fabricate or repair steel.
“Pops” had a genuine interest in the people that he met and would remember conversations and stories for years, often continuing a conversation months or years later.
Fred is survived by his loving wife Diane (Boduch) Saunders Bruening; his son Mark Bruening (Susan) of Pennsylvania; a stepson, Michael (Sabrina) Saunders of Meaford, Ontario; his son in law, David Coull; grandchildren, Hannah and Ian Saunders; Mark, Jr; Blaine; Daniel; Cody and Casey; Special friend, Mark Johannesen of West Seneca.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Barbara Coull and siblings, Curtis and Ronald.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.  A celebration of life will be held at a later date. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children's Hospital; Flight 93 Memorial Fund or Niagara Hospice, Inc.

They spent nearly every moment together, still holding hands, sharing laughs, and dancing when a good song played, even if he was just swaying in his chair. Together, they enjoyed being Scrabble and puzzle partners, sharing many cozy evenings side by side.
A polio survivor, he was a fighter from the start. He lived with strength and resilience, always bringing warmth and laughter to those around him. His smile could brighten any room, and his lighthearted jokes put others at ease.
Gary had a gift for turning any ingredients into a delicious meal, bringing family and friends together around the table. An avid outdoorsman, he was happiest fishing, hunting, or exploring nature, and he shared this love of the wild with his children.
Known for his selflessness, he would be out in his van during snowstorms, helping anyone stranded or in need of a ride. He put others first, even when he was in pain, and his presence made every moment warmer.
He trained as a machinist in vocational school, dedicating himself to his trade with skill and integrity. He was respected for his work at Columbus McKinnon and Liston Manufacturing, where he was also a proud union member. A talented woodworker, he took pride in his craftsmanship. Passionate about working out and bodybuilding, he inspired his family to stay active and instilled a love for fitness in his grandchildren.
He loved to travel, especially to New England, and enjoyed vacationing with his family. He felt at peace on a boat and had a deep love for all things nautical. He was his grandchildren’s biggest fan, celebrating their activities and sports with boundless enthusiasm, even watching from afar on live video when needed.
Gary lived every day with devotion to God. He loved animals, Sunday drives, quiet afternoons by the water, and motorcycle rides that brought him joy.
He is survived by his wife Linda; his sister, Amy Genung Kasprzak; his loving nieces and nephews; and his children: Gary Matthew (Gina) Kasprzak, Cherie (Luke) Galante, Aaron (Naomi) Kasprzak, and Amanda (Gary)Kendra. He was a proud Papa to his 13 grandchildren: Gabrielle June, and Emma, Gideon Theodore Kasprzak; Gianna, Lukie, and Mariana Galante; Aaron David, Jonah, Elijah Dale, Isaiah, and Ethan Kasprzak; and Lylian and Mason Kendra. He was preceded in death by his brother, Guy Kasprzak, who passed just two weeks before him. His life was a beautiful example of kindness, strength, and love. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy lives on in the laughter, love, and memories he leaves behind.
