10002 | Lockport NY Union Sun Journal - 4/23/1963 Spring flowers adorned the altar of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Newfane at 3 p. m. Saturday when Wanda Ruth Bassler exchanged nuptial vows with Wayne H. Bobzien. The Rev. Klingbiel officiated at the double-ring ceremony. Spring flowers adorned the altar when the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Berndt of 6725 Moyer Road, Lockport was given in marriage by her father to the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman F. Bobzien of 2088 Lockport - Olcott Road, Burt. The bride chose a floorlength gown of silk bombazine with accents of Chantilly lace, all underscored with ice blue taffeta. The fitted bodice and long princess sleeves of lace topped the bouffant redingote skirt which featured a flowing train of lace scallops. The scalloped neckline was accented with paillettes and baby seed pearls and her illusion veil was caught by a crown of matching lace and crystals. COLONIAL BOUQUET She carried a colonial bouquet of white carnations and chrysanthemums. Attired in an ice blue sheath with matching overskirt was the honor attendant, Miss Mary Berndt of Lockport. The gown was fashioned with a portrait neckline and three- quarter length sleeves. A Dior bow of matching taffeta held her circular face veil and she carried a colonial bouquet of white chrysnathemums and blue tinted carnations. Identically attired were the attendants, Mrs. Arthur Reimherr of Livonia, Mich., sister of the groom; Mrs. William Miles of Corfu and Miss Clara Bane of Lyndonville, cousins of the bride. Debra Riemherr and Steven Reimherr of Livonia, niece and nephew of the groom, served as flower girl and ring bearer. Merle Volschow of Newfane, attended his cousin as best man with Arthur Reimherr of Livonia, brother-inlaw of the groom; John Berndt Sr. of Lockport; and Harold Bendt, of Burt, cousin of the groom, sharing ushering duties. A pink brocade sheath was the choice of Mrs. Berndt for her daughter's wedding. She completed her ensemble with beige accessories and pink carnations. Mrs. Bobzien, mother of the groom, chose a blue floral print dress and added black and white accessories and pink carnations. FTVE-TIERED CAKE Cy Roberts and his orchestra provided music for danc- ing at the wedding reception which followed the ceremony at the Newfane Fire Hall. a five-tiered wedding cake adorned with blue and white flowers centered the bride's table. For her trip to Williamsburg, Va., the bride chose a powder blue suit with copen blue accessories. Upon their return, the couple will make their home at 2088 Lockport- Olcott Road, Burt. The bride is a graduate of Akron Central School and an employe of Mt. View Hospital. The groom, a graduate of Newfane Central School, is employed by the B. R. De- Witt Co. of Spencerport. Monday marked the 50th anniversary of their wedding. In honor ol the occa- sion, they were entertained at a surprise iamily dinner party at Park Hotel Saturday evening attended by 32 persons This is the third golden wedding observed in recent years in Mr Bars' family. For the past quarter of a cen- tury the oouple has resided at their 196-acre farm at Raymond Hill. Mrs. Bars, the former Elizabeth Altro. daughter of Mr. and Mrs Fred Altro, was born in the Town of Clarence. When she was six months old, she moved to a log cabin in the Kinne Road. At the age of 13, Mrs. bars fam- ily settled on a neighboring farm and she remained there until her marriage by the Rev. S. E. Way. Erie County Native Mr. Bars was born in a log cab.n in the Town of Newstead.- Erie County, and moved to Niagara County at the age of nine, where he attended a district school. He is still active as a successful farmer. "The log cabin was town down shortly after we moved," Mrs. Bars said, as she vividly recalled the crowded conditions in the two -room hut for the family fo four, and her daily two-mile hike to the district school. "The most noticeable change I have seen through the years is in farm machinery. When I was a child, I remember my father work- ing the land with wooden imple- ments, drawn by horses." Farming Family Both Mr. and Mrs. Bars parents were lifelong farmers. Their grand- parents were natives of Germany. After their marriage, the couple moved to the Town of Royalton. Benedict, 75, of Pekin Townline Road, formerly a farmer at Molyneaux Corners, died Saturday (April 23, 1966) at Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo. He was born Nov. 7. 1800 at Gasport, the son of Allen and Frances Benedict. Mr. Benedict operated a fruit and vegetable farm at Molyneaux Corners for 37 years. He had made his home in Pekin for 16 years. He was a former member of the Niagara County Farm Bureau and a member of the Holy Name Society of Immaculate Conception Church at N o r th Ridge. Surviving an bit widow, Ruth H. Benedict; a son, Maj. Allen Benedict of Ent Air Force Base, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter, Mrs. Emer Boll of Kenmore and four grandchllren. Transit St., retired superintendent of fire alarms, died this morning (April 30, 1960) in the Veteran's Hospital in Buffalo. A native of Medina, Mr. Shan ley lived here for 58 years. He served with the Fire Department from 1935 until his retirement in 1958. He was appointed fire alarm superintendent in 1956. Son. of Frank and Ellen Mc- Grath Shanley, he was born o n Aug. 21, 1894. He was educated at St. Johns School and L o c k - port High School An overseas Army veteran of World War I, Mr. Shanley was employed by the New York State Electric and Gas Corp here for 15 years before joining the Fire Department. He married the former Mary Healy on Aug. 16, 1927. Mr. _ was a member of St. Patrick's Church and its Holy Name Society;- the Firemen's Benevolent Assn. and Lockport Council 319, Knights of Columbus. He was a charter member of the Lockport Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. An ardent football fan, Mr. Shanley also enjoyed fishing. Besides his wife, he is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Carl W. Blackley Jr., Miss Patricia Rose Shanley and Mrs. Raymond B. Coakley, all of Lockport; Sister M. Dominic, St. Joseph's Convent, Buffalo; Mrs. Dominic Albanese, Medina, and Mrs. Mauro D. 10037 | Lockport NY Union Sun Journal - 4/30/1960 The "Duke of Lockport" is dead. James P. (Jimmy) Duffy, 71, former Lockport welterweight boxer who put the community on die map with his boxing prowess in the early 1900s. died this morning (April 30. 1960) in Veterans' Administration Hospital, Buffalo. He had been a patient there for nine years. Born in Lockport on Gooding St., June 12, 1889, Jimmy was the son of Mrs. Mary Duffy Lacey. He was reared by his maternal grandparents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John Duffy of Gooding St. Mr. Duffy attended St. Patrick's parochial school. Before he started boxing at 17 be worked for his mother driving horse teams. She had transportation contracts with the former Lockport Fibre Co. Jimmy fought his first fight in the old Crowe Building on Lock St., two blocks from his home. He served as a substitute and his decisive victory encouraged him to follow professional box ing as a career. FOUGHT WORLD'S GREAT From 1910 to 1918, Jimmy Duffy fought all the top-notchers of the world - Jack Britton, Packy McFarland, Knockout Brennan and others. A dark shadow fell over his career in 1915 when he was badly injured in an auto accident and it was thought he would lose his leg. Although he surmounted this obstacle and was in the ring another three years, he waa never able to capture the top rung of the ladder. During World War I he served in the Army and fought on occasions for the Crippled Soldiers in New York City. In 1922. Jimmy waa appointed ed a Sheriff's deputy by the late Sheriff Alanson C. Bigelow. He served as night deputy for 37 years on consecutive three-year appointments with the exception of 1942 when he was employed for a year by the new York State Electric and Gas Corp. On Nov. 15, 1949, he slipped and suffered a hip injury which forced his retirement. He had since been an invalid. In 1949 the DeSales Booster Club held a sports night in his honor. He was married in 1908 to the former Alice Barrett The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1958. Mrs. Duffy is a former supervisor and alderman of the First Ward. Jimmy was a former member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Knights of Columbus, Elks Club and the old North End Athletic Club. Besides his wife, he leaves a brother, Elmer Duffy of Chicago, a retired Chicago policeman, and one sister, Mrs, Paul Weigund of Lockport. Town of Cambria, who sought a share in $15,000 realized from die sale of a farm and personal property left by her late son. Glenn A. Brick. Town of Cambria. The property had basn sold by the widow, Ruth H. Brick, as ad minlstratrix of the estate, and the proceeds had bean ordered bald until the cllam of Mr. Brick's mother was heard. Mr Brick died Oct. 29,1948, leaving his widow and two children. Eric Glen Brick, 2, and Jerry Carl Brick. 1. A t the time of hie death the family occupied a farm In the town of Cambria, FORMERLY OWNED FARM Mr. Brick'a mother also lived on the farm which originally had been Owned by her and her late husband In 1944 and 1945 she conveyed the farm, stock and tools to her son. It was the contention of Mr. Brick's mother that In addition to other considerations, bar eon agreed to permit her to lire In one of the houses on the farm for the rest of her life without charge, She said he also agreed to pay her one half of the milk checks, allow bar subsistence off the. farm and pay the expenses of his sister. Sue, through school. Judge Marsh cited that the court being called upon by Mrs. Brick "to give effect to an alleged oral agreement which it is claimed survives the promisor and imposes upon his estate substantial obligations." SON'S OBLIGATION CITED "That the son evidenced a of obligation to bis mother in nection with bis occupancy of the farm during his lifetime falls far short of an acknowledgment of a continuing charge which would be required to be imposed on those to whom he owed an equally strong obligation and daty following h i s death," Judge Marsh said. The widow was represented to the action by Pogle, Andrews and Pusateri with Attorney J. Wealky Andrews of counsel. Richard M. Lein was attorney for Mr. Brick's mother. Attorney W. ALSO Lockport NY Union Sun Journal - 10/30/1948 111 for two weeks of an unusual malady diagnosed as cerebral aneurysm, Glenn A Brick, 38, chief of the Cambria Volunteer Fire Company and prominent Lower Mountain Road farmer, died Friday at Millard Fillmore Hospital, Buffalo. The ailment is described as a weakness of blood vessels in the head. Mr. Brick was a lifelong resident of the Town of Cambria and resided in the family homestead where he had operated a farm since the death of his father si. years ago. He was town tax collector, a Niagara County Farm Bureau committeeman, a Republican committeeman, a member of the Town of Cambria Zoning Board and was active in affairs of Cambria Con- gregational Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruth Brick; two sons, Eric and Jerry; his mother, Mrs. Evelyn Brick; two brothers, Arthur and Mervin Brick; a sister, Suanne Brick; all of Cambria; and another sister, Mrs. Alfred Wendt of Sanborn. Funeral services will be held at his home at 2 o'clock Monday and at 2:30 in Cambria Congregational Church, the Rev. Morris Burns of- ficiating.
