10401 | Lockport NY Union Sun Journal - 7/20/1929 The funeral of Allen Joel Barry, for many years a resident of Ransomville, was held from his late home on Curtiss avenue, Wednes- day, with services in charge of the pastor of the Baptist church, Rev. William D. Clough. Mr. Barry has been in failing health for some time, but on Friday of last week he suf- fered a fall while walking home, and was obliged to wait for help to come to him to assist him home. This may have hastened the end. Mr. Barry was born in Lyndonville and spent his boyhood there For several years he owned and was in charge of a drug store past few years he was engaged in buying fruit and produce. In 1892 he was married to Lotta Maud Ransom, who survives him. He leaves also an only son Walter, a brother, Newton Barry, of Lyn- donville, and three grandchildren. The flora expressions of love and s/mpathy were numerous aid beautiful The friends who bore him o his last resting place in North Ridge cemetery were Clarence Cor- nell. Edward Richardson. A. He was born April 15, 1900 at Knowlesville. a son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Rush. He lived in iBurt for 20 years before moving to the Coomer Road home 10, years ago. Mr. Rush was an engineer at Burt Cold Storage for 20 years fand his last employment was as a maintenance man at Mount View Hospital. Surviving are his widow. Leta Rush, six stepchildren, Ralph Norman and Bruce Roberts, Albert and Donald Harris, and Mrs. Donald (Shirley) Dux- bury; a sister, Mrs. Mary Hut- ter of Buffalo; and two broth- ers, Theodore rush of New- fane and Bernard Rush of Lockport. He was working in bis garden "Wednesday afternoon when stricken. Death was due to an intestinal obstruction. Mr, Bowerman was born in Nottawasaga, Ont., on May 21, 1857, and had resided the past 24 years in Niagara county. He was a member and prominent worker In the First Methodist Episcopal church, this City. Besides his widow Mr. Bowerman Is survived by nine sons. Charles, Ernest and Harvey, town of Lockport; Fred, Toronto, Ont.: Wilfred, Beach Ridge; Harold. 10415 | Lockport NY Union Sun Journal - 7/23/1971 CASTILE - Mrs. Eleanor Brownell Torrey, 48, of East Lake Road, a music teacher formerly of Gasport, died Thursday after an illness of six years The Perry Kiwanis Club gave Mrs. Torrey its Award of the Year in 1970. She retired that year after teaching for 21 years in the Perry Central School District. Her husband Charles Torrey survives her, with her father, Roy H. Brownell, and an aunt, Mrs. Belle Clare, both of Gasport, and an uncle, George Clare of Buffalo. Mrs. Torrey was born in Gasport, Aug. 26, 1922, and was graduated from Barker High School in 1938. Fredonia Normal School gave her a bachelor of Science degree in 1942 and she later received a Master of Arts Degree from Geneseo State College. Mrs. Torrey taught in Pennsylvania for two years and in L e t c h w o r t h Central School District for three years before teaching in the Perry district. She was a member of the New York State Teachers Association and president of the Wyoming County Teachers Association. She served as organist at the Perry United Methodist Church Friends may call at the Harmon Funeral Home, Mam St., Castile from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and Saturday. 10416 | Lockport NY Union Sun Journal - 7/24/1931 The First Baptist church at Newfane was the scene of a pretty summer wedding on Tuesday afternoon at three o'clock when Rev. Eugene J. Fleury, united In marriage Miss Beatrice B. Mason, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wlnkley, of Hillcrest avenue, Newfane, to Joseph W. Brandstetter, son of Mrs. Frances Brandstetter, of Auburn. A profusion of hollyhocks In shades of pink and white and other summer garden flowers were used for the church decorations. The pews were marked off with white satin ribbon. Miss Malsle Flynn of Newfane, played the wedding music. The bride given in marriage by her brother, was charming in a white chiffon gown, with a bertha gracefully draped and caught in the back with a white chiffon rosette, the long skirt being hemmed with a ruffle. She wore a picture hat of white lace straw with satin ribbon, lace mitts, and carried a bouquet of sweetheart roses, gysopbilia and fern leaves, In shades of deep cream. Mrs. Harry Mason, matron of honor was gowned In yellow net embroidered In sea foam green, and broad brim hat of sea foam green, white lace mitts and carried Columbia roses, gysophilla, com flowers, and fern leaves. Mrs. Wlnkley, mother of the bride, was gowned In autumn brown with ecru lace with hat and slippers to correspond. Harry Mason was best man. Following the ceremony, a reception was held at the bride's home for the Immediate family and a few friends. The house decorations were colorful In their arrangement of roses, snapdragons, sweet peas and ferns mixed with gysophilla. A dainty buffet lunch was served. The centerpiece was a silver basket filled with lowers In pastel shades, while at bothe ends of the table stood ivory tapers tied with tulle and flowers in silver holders. Artistically areranged on the buffet table was a bride's cake of white decorations. The gift of the bride to her matron of honor was a lovely necklace and to the organist, a vanity case. The bridegroom's gift to his best man was a pair of gloves. Mr. and Mrs. Brandstetter have left by motor for a trip to the Thousand Islands. Upon returning, they will be at home in 61 1/2 Lyon street, Batavia. The bride's going away costume was a suit of autumn brown and egg shell crepe, with hat and slippers in similar tones. The couple celebrated their 50th anniversary by attending Mass at Good Shepherd church, Pendle- ton Sunday and then with a dinner at Maple Brook Manor with their 8 children and 16 grandchildren. Mrs. Bishop, now 68, was born on the Transit Road, town of Pendleton, the daughter of the late Mary Anna Rerun and Sebastian Bicker, Mr. Bishop, now 77 was born in insbruck, Tyrol, Austria and came to this country at the age of 25. He is the son of Catherine Patrick and James Bishop. He was em- ployed at Old Pulp Mills, Holly Shops, Gardner Foundry and Si- monds Saw and Steel Plant until he retired about 10 years ago. For many years Mr. Bewley operated a farm at Orangeport. Twenty-five years ago he moved to the present farm in Chestnut Ridge. His wife died several years ago. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. C. Irving Fisher, and three brothers, Senator Bewley, Richard and George C. Bewley. all of Lockport. There are many nephews and nieces. The body is at the Kennedy Funeral Home, 133 Walnut St where it will remain until 12 Noon on Friday when it will be taken to Christ Episcopal Church, of which Mr. Bewley was a lifelong member. Wcstcottt Jr., matron of honor, was attired in a powder blue strapless frock of nylon topped with a net shrug jacket. A band of blue flowers with veil and rhincstoncs comprised her headpiece and she carried a bouquet of yellow carnations with white baby's breath. Miss Bcula Bennion, sister of the briJcgroom. and Mrs. Gerald D. Batterson, sister-in-law of the bride, were bridesmaids, and wore pink frocks styled identically to that worn by the matron of honor. They carried pink carnations with white baby's breath. La Verne Bennion performed the duties of best man for his brother, while guests were seated by Gerald D. Batterson, brother of the bride, and Gerald Bennion, brother of the bridegroom. A reception was held after the ceremony at the Niagara No. 1 Exempt Firemen Hall, The mother of the bride appeared in an antique rose lace dress with white accessories, while an antique lace and nylon tulle rosecolored dress was the choice of the mother of the bridegroom. 10440 | Lockport NY Union Sun Journal - 7/28/1962 An active Republican and former Civil Defense official, Clarence E. Bistoff, 48. of 644 Willow was found dead in bed at his home about 9 p.m.. Friday (July 27, 1962). Niagara County Coroner Dr. George H. Muscato, after an autopsy this morning at Lockport Memorial Hospital, ruled a heart attack as the cause of death. A niece, Mrs. David E. Strong of 86 Webb St., found the body. Long active in Republican politics, Mr. Bistoff was one time a Fifth Ward committeeman. He also founded and served as president of the Lock City Republican Club. He was among the prime movers for a city manager type of government here. The move was defeated in a public referendum in 1956. Mr. Bistoff, a native of Lockport, was deputy director of the Niagara County Civil Defense office from 1958 to 1959. Prior to that he was employed as produce manager at the Lockport Loblaw Inc. supermarket. During World War II he served as a foreman at the Curtiss - Wright Aircraft Co. at Buffalo. Earlier this year he was employed by the New York State Barge Canal as a lift bridge operator. He had been laid off about one month. Mr. Bistoff is survived by his wife, Jean Bistoff of Albion; four daughters, Mrs. William Roth of Brockport.
