Berry, who was called by death early Sunday morning after an illness of several weeks, was held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon in the home, 126 Hyde Park. Burial was in Cold Springs cemetery. Mrs. Berry, a native of Hull, England, came to this country when a young woman, locating in Loekport 46 years ago. She was a member of the First Presbyterian church. Besides her husband, Mrs. Berry leaves two sons, Robert A. Berry and William M. 10703 | Lockport NY Union Sun Journal - 9/4/1942 The Rev. Homer W. Carr, 81, Burt, former president of the New York State Conference of Seventh Day Adventists, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at 5:45 Thursday afternoon in his automobile on a y ^ j s l d e road near Burt. Mr. Carr, who had been convalescing at the home of his son, Dr. Earl B. Carr, in Silver Creek, after an attack of the grippe, was returning to his home at Burt with his wife, Mrs. Maude Carr. Enroute they visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Clapp, Transit Road, Town of Newfane. Shortly after leaving there Mr. Carr was stricken. While serving as president of the State Conference of Seventh Day Adventists, Mr. Carr made his home at Salamanca. Previous to that he had been president of the Northern New England Conference at Portland, Me. He was elder of Seventh Day Adventist Churches at Burt and Lockport for several years prior to his retirement two years ago. She was born Sept. 17, 1883 in England, migrating to Lockport and later to Niagara Falls, where she had lived for the past 20 years. Her husband, John Behm, died about 22 years ago. Mrs. Behm was active in the Women's Missionary Society of the Free Methodist Church in Lockport and Niagara Falls. Surviving are four daughters. Mrs. Lydia Moore and Mrs. George M. Wilson, both of Lock- port; Mrs. Mabel Allen, Niagara Falls, and Mrs. Elma Wendt, Minnesota; three sons. Irving. Bluhm, 71. of 8158 Akron Rd., Town of Royalton, died Sunday (Sept. 3. 1961) at Lockport Memo- rial Hospital after a long illness. Born June 26, 1890 in Lockport, he was the son of August and Albertine Roggow Bluhm He was a carpenter-millwright at the Harrison Radiator Division of General Motors Corp. for many years, retiring in 1955. He became Interested in politics in 1941 and was the committeeman for the Third District of the Fifth Ward and later the alderman for he Fifth Ward for two terms. He was also an alderman- at-large for eight years. He retired from politics in 1953. Mr. Bluhm was a member of the IOOF United Lodge 98, the Lockport Lodge 73 of the F&AM the John Hodge Lodge of Perfection and St. Peter's Church. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Letitia Clugston Bluhm; two daughters, Mrs. Walter W. Ur- tel of Royalton; Mrs. Kathryn A. Felton of Lockport; eight grand- children; three sisters, Mrs. Fred- erick Pratt and Mrs. Lee Taylor Sr. of Lockport; and Mrs. Ray- mond Cady of Wolcottsville; a brother Herbert W. ALSO Niagara Gazette - 9/5/1961 LOCKPORT-A Town of Lockport man was killed early today when the car he was driving went out of control and struck a tree in Hinman Road, just inside the Lockport city limits. Only three other persons were injured in county auto mishaps over the three-day Labor Day weekend. The fatal accident was the 17th on county roads outside the City of Niagara Falls this year, compared with 19 at the same time last year. Roger Bistoff, 26, of 5649 Hinman Road, died of multiple injuries suffered when he was pinned in the wreckage "of his car. Dr. George V. Muscato Jr., this city, a Niagara County coroner, investigated. Lockport police said Bistoff was killed shortly after 2 a.m. today when his car struck the tree abput 1,000 feet south of the Summit Street intersection. Officers Richard Moran and Charles Sobieraski said the auto skidded 195 feet before hitting the tree. Bistoff was traveling alone, the report said. Dr. Muscato said Bistoff died of a fractured skull, crushed chest and multiple fractures. He was born in Lockport Sept. 20, 1935, the son of Royal A. and Doris Bergman Bistoff. He attended Lockport schools and served in the Army from April 1958 until April 1960. For the last five years he was employed as a welder at Frontier Stone Products Inc., Lockport. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandfather, Henry Bergman, Clarence; an aunt, four uncles and several cousins. Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Lange Funeral Home, this city. Rev. Ritchard E. Richard Turner, 73, of 73 East Ave., died Tuesday (Sept. 4, 1962) at Veteran's Hospital Buffalo, after a long illness. During his younger years. Mr Turner actively participated in the basketball leagues at the YMCA. He was one of the found ers and an early president of the United Church Bowling League and president of the first Lockport Softball League. Born In Lockport, June 4, 1889 son of Joseph W. and Harriet Coulson Turner Jr.. he was employed for 25 years at the former Niagara County National Bank and Trust Co., and later was associated with his father in the Turner Fuel Company. A veteran of World War I in the U.S. Navy, he was once one of the best known younger businessmen of Lockport. Mr. Turner is survived by one sister. Miss E. Louise Turner; two brothers, G. Coulson and Joseph, all of Lockport; also several nieces and nephews. Y , Mrs. Huston of Mannsville. N. Y. Notice of funeral later. ALSO Adams NY Jefferson County Journal - 9/19/1917 George Stewart Benham, aged 41, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward H. Benham of Clifton Springs, N. Y., was instantly killed on Wednesday evening, Sept. 5, near Olcott Beach, in an automobile accident. Mr. Benham was a resident of Newfane, N. Y., but had charge of a garage at Lockport, N. Y. He and two other men from the garage were testing out an eight cylinder car when the accident occurred. The road was new to Mr. Benham and he mistook the soldiers' monument for the end of the road, and applied his emergency brake, which resulted in the car skiding and hitting a telegrph pole. His companions jumped and escaped with minor injuries, but Mr. Benham was pinned underneath the car. Mr. Benham was a nurse by profession, having graduated from the Buffalo State hospital in 1895, and followed his profession until a few months ago when he went into the garage business. The remains were brought to the home of his parents in Clifton Springs where the funeral services were held on Saturday afternoon at 3:30, Rev. D. S. Wilson conducting the services. Interment in the Clifton Springs cemetery on Pearl street The deceased is survived by a wife and two daughters, Misses Hazel and Mildred Benham, of Newfane. N. Y., his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Carlin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Carlin, 142 Harvey Ave, became the bride of Cpl. Carl H. Bischkopf. son of Mr. and Mrs. William Bischkopf, 288 Park Ave. The Rev. John H. Chrtstman performed the ceremony. The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, wore a white net gown fashioned with a sweetheart neckline and long full skirt. Her finger-tip veil was caught to a high crown of seed pearls. She carried a shower bouquet of white, tied with white ribbons caught with baby's breath. Miss Jean Carlin, sister of the bride was maid of honor. She wore a floor length aqua taffeta dress. Her hat was pink starched lace trimmed with lilies of the valley and she carried pink roses and baby's breath. Miss Viola Bischkopf, sister of the groom, was bridesmaid. She wore a floor-length rose taffeta dress. Her hat was powder blue starched lace trimmed with lilies of the valley and she carried pink roses and baby's breath. Shirley Odle and Patricia Carlin, nieces of the bride, were flower girls. Shirley wore a floor-length yellow taffeta dress and a tiara of yellow flowers, Patricia wearing blue taffeta and a tiara or blue flowers. Both carried Colonial bouquets. William Carlin, brother of the bride, was best man and ushers were John Muruugh Jr and Bernard Odle Mrs. Carlin. mother of the I bride and Mrs. Bischkopf. mother of the groom, both wore navy blue gowns and corsages of red roses. Following the ceremony, a wedding breakfast fot the bridal party and Immediate families was served at the Park Hotel. The bridal table, arranged in T-ahape, was laid for 18' and centered with a large white wedding cake topped with a miniature bride and groom, fashioned in military style. Mrs. Buchanan, the former Minnie Dysinger, was born in Germany and lived in Lockport most of her life. She was born May 28, 1872, the daughter of the late Jacob and Charlotte E. Dysinger. Her husband, who died in 1949, was the assistant operator of the Lockport Pumping Works for several years until his retirement in 1939. Mrs. Stroth was formerly Miss Minnie Bobiien, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Botzien who came to America from Germany on their wedding trip. Making their home on the McClew road. Mr. Stroth was born ln Germany and with his parents came to America when 9 years old. They were married Sept. 4, 1888, in the Bobzien homestead on the Transit road, now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Christian Bobzien, a brother of Mrs. Stroth. Their attendants were Christian Bobzien, Freida Uirich, William Volschow, and Mary Klumpp. Mr. Bobzien being the only one living at the present time. All their married life including four years in Niagara Falls, has been spent in Niagara county, and more than 30 years in their present home here. They are enjoying comparatively good health. To them have been born five children, Mrs. Max Ericksson of Syracuse, Mrs. Ernest Stoddard and Helen Stroth of Burt, and Minnie and Lawrenoe both of whom passed away while in their teens. Deputy Sheriff Sgt. Robert Nagel and Deputy Richard Bunnell said the refuse truck, owned by Niagara Sanitation Service, 85 Michigan St., Buffalo, was stopped in the westbound lane when a westbound car, driven by Den nis S. Barnette, 35, of 1335 Ash land Ave., Niagara Falls, crash ed into the rear of it. They said Kenneth Bennion, 54, of 569 Third St., a sanitation worker, was standing behind the truck at the time of fte crash. Mr. Barnette and Mr. Bennion were pronounced dead at the scene, A second sanitation worker, Roy Doolittle, 61, of 334 First St., Niagara Falls, was released after treatment at Niag era Falls Memorial Hospital for chest, back, arm and hand in juries. 10736 | Lockport NY Union Sun Journal -3/29/1946 A former resident of Newfane and a veteran of World War II, John S. Banta has been appointed assistant to George M. Boughton, manager of the Colony Hotel, Delray Beach, Pla. The appointment was made shortly after Mr. Banta was released from the Navy in December. Mr. Banta served two years aboard a destroyer, the USS Murphy, and held the rank of lieutenant, junior grade. His ship was in every invasion in the European Thealer and played an important role during the Yalta Conference by transporting King Ibn Saud of Saudi-Arabia and his 42 attendants from Jidda, Arabia, to a confer- ence with the late President Roose- velt. During the trip, the ship's officers were honored at a banquet given them in Arabian fashion. A graduate of Cornell University, School of Hotel Administration, Mr. Banta entered the Navy after corn- pleting his course in April, 1943. While at college, he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity and the Sphinx Head Society. The Naval officer is married an d his wife, Maude, and daughter, Carol, are in Florida with him. Her fingertip veil was edged With Chantilly lace and fastened to a tiara of seed pearls Bows of white net surrounded ban bouquet of white roses and carnations and she wore a double strand of pearls, gift of the groom, and carried a white tatted handkerchief, gift of her aunt. Mrs. Donald McAvoy was matron of honor at her sister's wedding and chose a gown of light blue nylon marquisette fashioned with a fitted bodice, a tucked and draped fichu and ruffled sleeves. Bar fun skirt was trimmed with white eyelet and she wore a white net halo hat and white nylon gloves. She carried a bouquet of American beauty roses and red carnations surrounded by bows of white net. ' Mrs. Elwood Pittler. cousin of the bride, was bridesmaid in a pink nylon marquisette gown similar in style to that of the matron of honor. She carried a bouquet of tea roses and yellow carnations surrounded by bows of white net and wore a white net halo hat and nylon gloves. JUNIOR BRIDESMAID Miss Nancy Joanne Verity, sister of ther bride, was junior bridesmaid and was gowned In yellow nylon net featuring an Illusion neckline and bustle back, she wore a white hat and gloves and carried a bouquet of pink roses and carnations similar to that of the bridesmaid. Russell Ogden was best man for his brother-in-law's wedding e n d Clayton Bars, brother of t h e groom, and John Verity, the bride's brother, served as ushers. The bride's mother selected an afternoon gown of Navy blue crepe with a lace yoke accented by a matching sweetheart hat trimmed with American beauty roses. White accessories and a red rose cor- sage completed her costume. Mrs. Bars was gowned in a Navy and white crepe print accented by white accessories and a similar corsage. Immediately following the ceremony a reception was held at the bride's home for 180 guests, A buffet supper was served. GIFTS PRESENTED 'The bride presented pearls to her atendants while the groom gave cigarette lighters to the -best man and ushers. For traveling to the Thousand Is- lands the bride chose a sheer yellow dress, white accessories and a pink rose corsage. On their return the couple will live at 33 Harvey Ave*. Niagara, Tuesday, were held at his home in County Line and at St. Patrick's church, Barker, Friday morning, the Rev. Dennis Donovan, officiating. Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Lucewicz, he leaves several brothers and sisters. Members of the C. C. C. camp acted as bearers. Brownell of Orangeport Road, Gasport, were honored Wednesday afternoon and evening at an Open House given by their son, Archie Brownell, and Mrs. Brownell, at the home of Mrs, Bessie McDaris of Orangeport Road, in observance of their 50th wedding anniversary. The couple was married March 14, 1901 la Hartland at the home of his grandparents on Ridge Road, by the Rev. Barnett of Hartland M. E. Church. Refreshmenu were served buffet style from a lace covered table with a centerpiece of yellow roses, snapdragons and small mums, with candles at either aide. la the afternoon, coffee and cake were served by Mrs. Charles Sharpsteen with Mrs. Harry Dill erving punch and tea. During the evening reception, Mrs. Chauncey Brownell and Mrs. Edward Deigh- ton served. The three-tiered white wedding cake wa trimmed with yellow, with gold leaves inserted at intervas and topped by a brie and groom annd large gold band. BEST MAN PRESENT Nearly 100 guests attended, including Roy Brownell of Quaker Road, who was his brother's best man 50 years ago. The other attendant at the wedding was Miss Mamie Brayley, cousin of Mrs. Brownell, who now resides in Chicago and was unable to attend. Mr. Brownell was bora June 11, 1880 aa Quaker Road, Hartland. He is the son of the late Jessie ISrewnell of Quaker Road and Anna Mayne Brownell. a native of f sanda Mrs. Brownell's parents Were Cameron Hosmer of Lockport aad Carrie Shorten Hosmer of Hartland. She was born May 1, 1884 at Ridgeway. For several years, Mr. Brownell has been employed by the Western Block Co. on Market Street. The couple formerly resided oa Quaker Road but are making their home with their ana until their new home oa Orangeport Scad is completed. They are members of the Quaker Road Methodist Church. FIRST WHITE BABY Mr. Brownell is descended from early settlers in the area. His paternal grandmother was the first white baby born in the county, of Quaker stock, and her birth is recorded la the history of Niagara County. Besides their son. Mr. and Mrs. Brownell have two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Schrader,Retired Farmer,Dies In Newfane NEWFANE - Herman J.Schrader, 77, died after a short illness at his home, 2756 Orchard St., Sunday (Jan. 7. 1962). He had resided there for the past five years. Prior to that he had lived in Olcott for 47 years, he;farmed most of his life.Mr. Schrader was born Jan. 30,1884, in Germany, son of Christopher and Hannah Schrader, and came to the United States at the:age of one and a half years.
