Julian was employed by Venture Forthe as a health care aide until he became disabled. He was a member of Riverside Presbyterian Church, was an avid Green Bay Packers fan, enjoyed football, reading, Sudoku puzzles, music and watching movies. Besides his mother; he is survived by his wife, Kathleen (Haynes) Sojka; his daughter, Elaine (Michael) Parenti; his son, Clark Sojka, all of Niagara Falls, NY; his sister, Christine (late Neil) Hardman of Sanborn, NY; several sisters-in-laws, nieces and nephews. 11552 | May 14, 2014 James R. Brunn Niagara Gazette LOCKPORT - James R. Brunn, 74, of 70th Street, Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at Niagara Hospice House in Lockport, NY, following a lengthy illness. Born in Hazleton, PA, he was the son of the late John A. and Jean (Woodring) Brunn. James came to Niagara Falls as a child and attended local schools. He graduated from Niagara Falls High School and later earned a Bachelor's degree at Paul Smith's College in Paul Smiths, NY. During the Cold War he served in the U.S. Army's Intelligence Multi National Division targeting East German Intelligence. While in Germany, he was the director of a teen club for children of military and civilian personnel and coached their Little League baseball team. Following his honorable discharge he worked as a communications officer with the Niagara Falls Police Department for 30 years and following his retirement, he continued working as a Park Ranger with the New York State Park Police for several years. He was also one of the first Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) in Western New York and worked at Frontier Ambulance Service for 16 years, ten of those as their manager. James enjoyed music, cooking, genealogy, writing and photography. He was the publisher of two newsletters for First Presbyterian Church of Niagara Falls, where he served as a church historian and directed their Rainbow Club for many years. James was a member of the Niagara Falls Police Club, NYS Police Conference and First Presbyterian Church. He was one of the original founders of the Tyro Football Program for youth in Niagara Falls and was the recipient of the key to the city by then Mayor E. Dent Lackey, while serving as General Manager of the organization. Mr. Brunn is survived by two sisters, Judith Ann (George) Dudley of Alabama and Jerrine Louise Neff of Williamsville, NY, as well as a niece and several nephews. He also left behind his dear friends and special angels, Bob Monroe, Keith Stahlman, Matthew Thompson, Mel Dashineau, Lindsay Bodie (godchild), Shawn Larrabee, Joel Krupa, Donald and Barbara King, among others. There will be no prior visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, May 17th, at 11 AM at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY. The service will be hosted by Jim's brother-in-law, Rev. George Dudley. Born in North Tonawanda, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Mary (nee Sullivan) Donner and had been a lifelong resident of North Tonawanda. Mrs. Dietrich worked as a secretary for the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Women's Committee before retiring, and had been an active member of the former Ascension Parish. She had been a member of the Ladies Golf League at Deerwood Golf Course, and was a former board member of the YWCA of the Tonawandas. Betty was the wife of the late Clarence F. Dietrich, who died in 1987; and special friend of the late William "Bill" Prescott, Sr. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Joseph) Burngasser; her son, Michael (Christine) Dietrich; and five grandchildren, Paul Dietrich, Erin (Ebon) Bergeron-Dietrich, Joseph Burngasser, MaryKate Burngasser and CPO Michael (Taia) Burngasser, US Navy. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren and her dear friend, Judy Niemec. There is no visitation. Tim was born to Thomas and Mary Sy of Lockport, NY, on October 31, 1963. He attended Lockport elementary schools and was active in the boys scouts. He graduated from Lockport Senior High in 1981. Tim attended college at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he obtained a food service degree in 1985. After college, Tim moved to Albany, NY, and was a food service manager for DAKA, Inc. In 1991, he married his high school sweetheart, Ann (Robison) also of Lockport. In 1992, he became employed with the State's Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped as a business specialist. In this role he assisted the visually handicapped operate convenient and food stores in the Capital District. Over the years Tim enjoyed skiing, ice skating, music, gardening and cooking. Tim is survived by his best friend and wife, Ann; his mother, Mary Sy; brother, Thomas Sy (Diane); brother, Michael Sy (Bridget); brother-in-law, Michael Robison (Maria); ten nieces and nephews. Mrs. Weir had been employed at the NYS Department of Labor in Tonawanda for more than 20 years before retiring, and then was an adult literacy volunteer. She was the wife of the late Robert Weir, who died in 2001; and sister of the late Edith Bennett. She is survived by her two sons, Robert (Donna) Weir and Brian (Miriam Wynn) Weir; and a brother, Roy (Jane) Wilson. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. During World War II, Leona worked as a production worker at Kimberly Clark. She later was employed as a housekeeper for the Quality Inn in Niagara Falls, NY. Mrs. Nixon was a member of Forestview Church of God. Leona enjoyed the outdoors, walking, crafts and playing bingo at Our Lady of Peace. She will be sadly missed. Mrs. Nixon is survived by one daughter, Beverly (David) Mietlicki of Whitesville, NY; one son, Michael (Deborah) Nixon of Niagara Falls, NY; one grandson, David Mietlicki of Niagara Falls, NY; two granddaughters, Tina Mietlicki and Marcie Copeland (Eric) Hapeman, both of Niagara Falls, NY; five great-grandchildren, Tyler Mietlicki, Courtney Hapeman, Emily Gnirk, Jaylin Mietlicki and Eric Hapeman, all of Niagara Falls, NY, and one expected great-grandson. Born in Liegnitz, Germany on March 29, 1933 to the late Max and Martha Klenner. He came to the U.S. as a teenager and later served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951-1954, earning the rank of Sergeant. Werner was employed as a Production Supervisor at Harrison Radiator for 29 years. He was an active member of the former Sanborn Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and trustee, a former member of the Sanborn Fire Company, Tri-Community Ambulance Service, Inc., and volunteered at Mount St. Mary's Hospital. Hobbies and interests included fishing, gardening, golf, was an avid Sabres and Bills fan, and enjoyed spending quality time with his family on the weekends at the cottage on Lake Ontario, and watching his sons and grandsons in sporting events. Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Carol A. (Jackson) Klenner. They were united in marriage July 27, 1955; three children, Raymond (Sandy) Klenner of Sanborn, JoAnn (Patrick) Carey of Niagara Falls and Daniel (Kathy) Klenner of Annapolis, MD; two grandchildren, Jeremy and Justin Klenner; three step-granddaughters, three step-great-grandchildren, two brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews in both the U.S. and Germany. Lauer, 86, formerly of Youngstown, NY, passed away under the loving care of his family and hospice on Sunday, May 13, 2012 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Newark, DE. Born on October 13, 1925 in Niagara Falls, NY, Lew was the son of the late Lewis and Lillian (Pearson) Lauer and the oldest of five children. A 1943 graduate of Niagara Falls High School, he served our country with the US Army, 28th Infantry Division, in Europe during World War II from 1944-46. He attended Niagara and Cornell Universities. Lew was employed at Ayers Witmer Lumber in Niagara Falls and Frontier Lumber Company in Buffalo, retiring in 1989. Lew was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, where he served as a Deacon and was a longtime choir member. He was a member of two local singing groups, The Mary Mitchell Singers and The Good Sound. He loved his family, his church, his music and his flowers. He married Suzanne Kolloff in 1952 and was predeceased by her in 1991. Survivors include his son, Jeffrey Lauer of Niagara Falls; daughter, Tracy Lauer, of Phoenix, AZ; daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Michael Melville; and grandchildren, Timothy and Sarah, of Newark, DE. He is also survived by his sister and friend, Dianne Havens of Niagara Falls; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Paul, Richard and Arthur. Audrey worked for William Brothers Department Store where her relationship with the Williams family flourished to a point where Mr. Williams loaned her the money to buy her first car, a convertible and Audrey paid him back every week out of her paycheck. She also worked at Bell Telephone as an operator and Harrison Radiator. She volunteered at the Lockport Public Library as a library assistant. Audrey quit working to stay home and become a dedicated housewife and mother, taking care of her family in every aspect. She belonged to many decorating committees and Audrey loved ceramic making, candy making, silk flower making, cake making, painting, drawing, and was also a wonderful piano player. He was a member of the Hartland United Methodist Church, joining in 1962 to present; member of the Gasport American Legion Post 1253, Hartland Conservation Club and a member of ABC American Bowling Congress. Lewis enjoyed fishing, was an avid local sports fan, bowling and was a John Deere Collector. Her employment included The Dobby Foundry, E.I. DuPont Company, and Bell Aircraft Corp. She was very active in the local 4-H Club, winning many trips and awards. Jeanette was also a member of the local Cambria Homemakers, a social member of the Harrison Retirees Travel Club, The Welch Cooperative, and the Dale Association. Jeanette was confirmed on October 5, 1947 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wilson, and presently a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Pekin. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, knitting, playing Bingo and shared great comfort in being with family and friends. Chester attended St. Stanislaus Kostka School, Gaskill Junior High School and graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1941. He was a member of the Air National Guard and worked at Bell Aerospace during World War II. On May 1, 1948, he married Stella Pilat at Holy Trinity R.C. Church. They were married for 65 years and she predeceased him on February 13, 2014. Chester worked for over 30 years at Moore Business Forms on Buffalo Ave. as a printing machine operator. He was later employed by Bane Printing, National Time Share and Lindsay Photo as a photo developer and truck driver. He was a past member of the Holy Name Society and Usher's Club of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church (Divine Mercy). In his leisure time, he enjoyed rose gardening, volunteering at the St. Stan's Polka Festival and renovating the Parish Center with his friends. Chester was proud of his Polish heritage and looked forward to the yearly trips to Ocean City Maryland's Polka Festival. He always cheered for the Toronto Blue Jays. Vaughan of Supreme court today by the May grand jury. Frey, charged with attempting to hold up the Somerset National Bank at Barker on April 11, was also indicted on a charge of possessing a pistol without a permit. District Attorney John S. Marsh revealed today that Prey has been removed from Niagara county Jail to Buffalo state hospital for observation as to his sanity. -- JURY TRIAL - cont'd Dr. Cudmore agreed with Dr. Fletcher in each of these findings. Earlier, several other witnesses testified that for three or four months before the holdup attempt, Frey had been acting irrational The defense was still being presented Judge Knowles recessed court until Thursday morning at 10 o'clock. Judge Knowles had regular terms of Surrogate's and Children's court today in Niagara Falls. Strange Actions Related. Defense Attorney Miller plans to complete his case sometime Thursday. The case, which opened Monday, will probably go to the jury sometime late Thursday or on Friday. The defendant's wife, Mrs. Rose Frey, testified Tuesday afternoon that her husband acted strangely for several months before the attempted holdup. She said he was quiet and moody, had a poor appetite and complained of pains in his head. On a number of occasions, she said, he failed to return home at night and was found sleeping in his gasoline station or at the town clerk's office, Mrs. Frey recalled one day when it was cold and slippery, her husband came home about 4 o'clock in the afternoon and announced out of clear sky that he was going to Pennsylvania to visit relatives. Despite her attempts to persuade him to stay home, she said he went and was gone several days. Lucille J. Frey, a daughter-in law, testified that one day the defendant came to her home and asked for a butcher knife. Threatened Suicide. "I asked turn what he wanted it for and he told me he was so tired of living he wanted to commit suicide," she said. The witness explained that at first she thought her father-in-law was fooling, but that she later followed him to the barn and found him sharpening the knife. "I finally talked htm out of it," she said. Floyd and Emerson Frey, sons of the defendant: Mrs. Mary L, Frey, wife of Emerson, and Miss Frances Frey, a daughter of the dedefendant, all testified to what they termed the unusual behavior of the defendant. Jack was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church in the City of Tonawanda, where he served as a Deacon and Sexton. He was a member of the Stephen Sikora Post #1322 American Legion and founder of the "HaackerDome". Jack was an avid gardener, a skilled craftsman, and always willing to lend a hand. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Janet L. (nee Jayne) Haacker; two sons, Joshua (Jessica) Haacker of Los Angeles, CA, and Jacob (Jennifer) Haacker of North Tonawanda; four grandchildren, Sylvia, Noah, Juliana, and Jackson; two brothers, William "Bill" (Brenda) Haacker of New Bern, NC, and Fred "Fritz" (Linda) Haacker of Endicott, NY; also survived by many loving in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Brian was employed at the Carborundum Company in Wheatfield and later as a mechanic at Great Lakes Recycling in North Tonawanda, until his retirement. Hobbies included a variety of things relating to history, making Renaissance chain mail, woodworking and music. Survivors include his wife, Katherine (Duffield) Burt. They were united in marriage on July 25, 1970; two daughters, Andrea (Stephen) Seaver of Greer, SC and Ashley Burt of Niagara Falls; four grandchildren, Nicholas, Preston, Shelby and Colton; a sister, Karolyn E. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, Jack was the son of the late John E. and Elsie McAllister and grew up in the LaSalle section of Niagara Falls. Jack was a graduate of both LaSalle H.S. and SUNY Pottsdam. His love of sports centered around swimming and golf where he excelled. Numerous swim records still stand today in his name at both schools. He was extremely talented and could fix almost anything and always offered help to friends in need. Family and friends were his love of life and his smiling face and big bear hugs will be sorely missed by his longtime friends, Andy Soder, Paul Mikranz and Dean Blanchard. Jack was the owner of Twin City Builders, Inc. and was also employed by his good friend, Chris Valentine, at Lighthouse Management Partners, Inc. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown and the Universal Craftsman Council of Engineers. She enjoyed painting, playing cards, and the Lewiston Senior Citizens. 11598 | May 24, 2013 John E. Skutt Lockport Union-Sun & Journal LOCKPORT — May 23, 2013, on the wings of Angels, John E. Skutt was reunited with his beloved wife, Betty E. Skutt, in heaven, while surrounded by his family under the loving care of the staff at Niagara Hospice House. Born on December 4, 1936, in Newfane, John is the son of the late George and Flora (Thompson) Skutt. He is survived by his three daughters, Lois (Jack) Voelker of Rushford, NY, Cathy (Chester) Michalak of Lockport, NY and Janet (Jack) Green of Barker, NY; sisters, Shirley (Robert) Harbor of Florida, Elizabeth (Dave) Hollenbaugh and Eva (Orland, Sr.) Kipp, both of Lockport, NY, Beverly (late Bucky) White of California; brothers, LaVern (Bonnie) Skutt and Robert (Gail) Skutt of Florida. John is also survived by ten grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren; several cousins and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by one son, David B DePoy; sister, Audrey Wittcop; and brothers, Fred, George and Richard Skutt. John was a member of the United States Navy from 1955 to 1961 when he was Honorably Discharged. He was employed by the Newfane Lumber Co. before he accepted employment at Harrison Radiator Co. Lockport, NY where he retired in 1994 after 30 years of service. Very civic minded, John was a 33-year Active Member of the Rapids Volunteer Fire Department. He served two terms as the "Mayor" of Rapids, Town of Lockport, organizing many community, family- friendly events enjoyed by all who attended. John also belonged to the Navy Marine Club Ship 110, Lockport, NY, the Redman Club and the IOOB Club, and the Woodlands Homeowners Assoc. where he held various official titles. He and his late wife, Betty, enjoyed traveling throughout the United States with The UAW Retirees Travel Club. One such trip they found especially enjoyable was out west where they "white water" rafted on the Colorado River. He will be especially missed by his loyal companion, his cat, Mikey. Friends and family are welcome for visitation at the Sherrie-Bream Funeral Home, 4521 Main Street, Gasport, NY, on May 28, 2013 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. She was born in Niagara Falls, NY, on January 4, 1926, the daughter of the late William and Beatrice (Hill) Keetch. Mrs. Hubbard graduated from LaSalle High School and from Niagara County Community College. She was a book keeper with SKW Alloys in Niagara Falls, for over 25 years before retiring. Mrs. Hubbard was also a co-owner of the Shutters & Boards Bar. She was a life-member of the Pekin Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Hubbard enjoyed camping, traveling and reading. She was the wife of the late George Hubbard and Chester Kaczor. Mrs. Hubbard is survived by four sons, George (Marilyn) Hubbard of Rexford, NY, William Kaczor and John (Rose) Hubbard, both of Niagara Falls, NY, Robert (Linda) Kaczor of Lockport, NY; one daughter, Janet (David) Wilson of Pekin; a son-in-law, Edward Snyder; three brothers, Clarence (late Gwendolyn) Keetch, Edward (JoAnn) Keetch and Lawrence (Delores) Keetch; one sister, Margaret (Mert) Myers. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hubbard was the mother of the late Sidney Hubbard and the late Katherine Snyder. He was born in Lewiston, NY, on November 6, 1968, the son of Gene J. and Elizabeth (Apen) Virtuoso of Lewiston, NY. Steve attended St. Peter's School and graduated from Lew-Port High School in 1986. He was employed with CM Irrigation Company from 1991 until 2001, where he worked on several national golf courses, Saratoga National, Lake Placid Resorts Golf Course and the Country Club of Rochester. He also worked with Inter Golf Course Construction Management from 2002 to 2008, and at River Oaks Golf Course on Grand Island since 2008. Steve was a Rock Concert aficionado with his friend, Brian McEvoy. Together they attended the concerts over the past 20 years of Roger Waters, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead, along with countless others. He idolized Andy Warhol and his cousin, Tommy Tedesco. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Christine (Main) Virtuoso; a daughter, Olivia Virtuoso; one brother, Michael Virtuoso of Niagara Falls, NY; one sister, Maria (Robert) Nalecz of Penfield, NY; son-in-law of Karen Craig; brother-in-law of Wende Nostro.
