Strasburg, a longtime resident of Niagara Falls, died on Friday, May 25, 2012 in Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence. He was 88. Born in Niagara Falls on June 18, 1923, the son of Albert F. and Clara A. (Schultz) Strasburg. He attended schools here and graduated from the former LaSalle Jr./Sr. High School. Robert served in the US. Army during WW II and was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant with the 16th Infantry Regiment 1 St Division on April 11, 1946. He was a past member of the American Legion LaSalle Post 1142. He worked for the Carborundum Company, Kimberly Clark, Invenex and retired from Remington Rand. A member of Grace Lutheran Church since childhood, Robert enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry and raising pheasants. He was a former member of the LaSalle Sportsman's Club. He enjoyed building birdhouses and shipped them to family and friends around the country. He loved his daily visits with his friends at the Fashion Outlets and attending various sporting events at Niagara University. He is survived by three daughters, Diane (Garry) Carr of Youngstown, Denise Hoover (Dennis) of Ransomville, and Debra Roberts (Mike Brabec) of Lewiston; two brothers, Albert Strasburg of Winterhaven, FL and Richard Strasburg of Phoenix, AZ; a sister, Joanne Milliville of the Town of Wheatfield; ten grandchildren, Gretchen (Ron) Kadlecik; Brian (Karola), Darryl (Brandy) and Daniel Carr; Christopher, Keith (Maryellen) and Kevin (Meagan) Becken; Scott, Michael and Sarah Dale; 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Charles, Donald, William and John Strasburg. Swann of Wilson, May 24, 2014 in Niagara Hospice House with his family at his side, born on August 12, 1945 in Wilson, he is the son of the late Earl L. and Genevieve G. (Lort) Swann. A 1963 graduate of Wilson High School, Gregg joined the United States Air Force, where he learned Martial Arts, and was Honorably Discharged in 1966. He met Barbara Malick in 1968 and they were married in 1972. Gregg attended Niagara County Community College as an art student and continued to learn to draw by the John Nagy mail-order school. He drew Reuben Wilson's picture which is displayed at the Wilson Historical Society, an avid computer buff and was also an amateur Gunsmith. A member of the Wilson Conservation Club, he loved his cats, the outdoors, target shooting, hunting, spending time with family and was very devoted to his mother. Surviving him besides his mother and wife are a brother, Terry L. Swann of Wilson; an aunt, Margaret Lort of Gasport; an uncle, Marlind Lort of Arizona; sister-in-law, Melody Welnoski of Pennsylvania. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, and many good friends. Predeceased by two brothers, Charles E. Swann and David F. Swann. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2014 in the Wilson First Baptist Church at 1 PM Petit Street Wilson. 11603 | May 27, 2014 Mark Joseph Licata Lockport Union-Sun & Journal ASHLAND, VA - Mark Joseph Licata left us, unexpectedly and much too soon, on Sunday, May 18th. He was born, the middle boy of six children, on August 20, 1960, in Lockport, NY. After graduating from DeSales Catholic High School and he put himself through Carnegie Mellon University with an Undergraduate Degree in Chemistry and a Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering with a concentration in polymers. "I just want to say one word to you. Just one word. ...Are you listening? Plastics." The Graduate. Mark was relentless in his pursuit of the perfect biomedical product - developed with patient input - that would be lifesaving when the patient needed it most. His career spanned 25 years, starting at Bayer USA and most recently at Kaleo Pharma in Richmond, VA, where he was Vice President of Industrialization and Quality. Mark never mentioned his accomplishments, and most friends and family had no idea that he had 25 individual patents, and was listed as an inventor on about 130 patents in all. Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Anne Elizabeth Kenney and Peter Joseph Licata; and his sister, Catherine Grace Licata. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Lisa Stiles Licata; his daughter, Meredith McKenzie O'Brien Licata; his son, Robertson Whittier Licata; his brothers, Peter John Licata and Michael Paul Licata (Nancy); his sisters, Elizabeth Anne Licata (Alan Bigelow) and Mary Patricia Licata; his niece and Goddaughter, Courtney Leigh Licata; his nephews, George Edward Robertson Stiles, III and Ethan James Sutton Stiles; as well as many in-laws and out-laws. He is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. He will be missed by his extended families at Kaleo Pharma, The Virginia Biotech Park, and CMU, as well as by those who shared his devotion to ultimate frisbee, disc golf, ice hockey, and surfing. (His favorite surf spot was Ho'okipa in Maui.) A lifelong extrovert, Mark had friends around the world that he met on ski slopes or wherever he happened to be. He will be remembered fondly by all of them. Services will be held on Saturday, May 31st, at 11 AM at St. James the Less Episcopal Church at 125 Beverly Rd., Ashland, VA. There will not be a reception at the Church because Mark wanted a party, which will follow at the Licata's. She was born in Lockport on June 2, 1938 to the late Leslie and Mary (Donner) Payne. Her husband, Frederick George Mangold, predeceased Nancy in 1981. She was the school nurse at Starpoint Central School District from 1974 until her retirement in 2011. Nancy was a member of St. John the Baptist Church where she happily served on committees. Caring for people was a big part of her life, not only for the schoolchildren, but for others in the community as well. Nancy's biggest passion in life was her family. She especially loved spending time with her children. Beloved mother of, Mark (Suzanne) Mangold of Cambria, Cheryl Ann (Jerry) Struzik of Virginia, Deanne (Donald) Schwartz of Hornell, Marianne (Joe) Dedeo of Albany, Beth Anne Makin of Buffalo, Julianne (George) Pancio of Rochester; dear grandmother of eighteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Fred worked for the Town of Lockport for over 40 years where he was the Highway Superintendent retiring in 1993. He also ran a small precast concrete business for many years while working for the town. Fred was a member of the Niagara County Highway Association and enjoyed going to his cabin in the Southern Tier where he would hunt and do landscaping. Fred was predeceased by his first wife of 40 years, Marie (Hebeler) Rankie; and his daughter, Deborah Gaskill. Born on July 12, 1943 in Lockport, Ruth is the daughter of the late Paul and Dorothy (Vohowsier) Weaver. Ruth married Carl Beiter on July 11, 1968. They had been married for 46 years. She had worked at Gasport Welding as a secretary before retiring. Ruth loved spending time with her grandkids. She also enjoyed Bingo, playing cards and traveling with Carl to Florida and the Bahamas. She was a member of the Lockport Eagles Club Ladies Auxiliary. Ruth had lived in Gasport for the past 37 years, previously of Lockport. Surviving is her husband, Carl Beiter. She is also survived by her children, Pamela (Steve) Tagg of Lockport, Gary Bennett of Lockport, Tonna (Howard) Tagg of Lockport and Douglas Weaver of Albion. Mrs. Silsby was born in Middleport, NY, on September 16, 1921 daughter of the late Thomas and Carrie (Zent) White. She and her husband, Robert W. Silsby, were married on June 26, 1943 and she has lived in Kenmore since 1952. Mrs. Silsby was employed by the Kenmore School System as a teacher's aide retiring in 1990 after 23 years of service. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Church in Kenmore, and was a member of the Neuman Guild of the church and she was also a member of the Erie County Red Cross. She enjoyed her family, traveling and she enjoyed knitting hats for charity and she distributed them around the world. On Mrs. Silsby's 75th birthday she and her husband, Robert, traveled to Moscow; on her 76th birthday they traveled to Bejing, China and on their 55th Wedding Anniversary they went on a walking tour of Tuscany, traveling 10 miles a day. She was predeceased by her siblings, Betty Holahan, Margaret Bixler, Frank White and Grace Schiffert. She is survived by her husband, Robert W. Silsby; four children, John (Robin) Silsby of Connecticut, Mary (Sam) Vitello of Lockport, Susan Hedges of Middleport and Kenmore and Charles (Geneva) Silsby of Lockport; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. There will be no prior visitation. She was born in Tonawanda, NY, on December 2, 1928, the daughter of the late John and Etta (Harkins) Westra. Mrs. Prohaska graduated from Tonawanda High School in 1946. She was a ticket agent for American Airlines for about 10 years in th 1940s and 1950s, and later became the accounts receivable clerk at Muck Motors in Getzville for about 15 years, beginning in 1978. Mrs. Prohaska helped her husband on the family farm. She was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church and its Altar Rosary Society. Mrs. Prohaska was a member of Cambria Home Bureau and enjoyed bowling, knitting, crocheting and reading. Mrs. Prohaska was the wife of the late Frank L. Prohaska, who died in November of 2010. She is survived by two sons, Thomas J. (Paula) Prohaska of Lockport and Gary W. (Dawn) Prohaska of Cambria; a daughter, Beth (Howard F. II) Wilson of Buffalo; three grandchildren, Matthew, Kristen and Miles; one sister, Joanne Onofrio; and a sister-in-law, Betty Westra. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. 11626 | May 31, 2012 Ricky E. Allen Niagara Gazette NORTH TONAWANDA — Ricky E. Allen, 58, of North Tonawanda, went home to heaven to be with our Lord on May 29, 2012, after a lengthy illness. He was born on June 19, 1953 to Warren and Shirley (Krueger) Allen. Rick loved scouting and was the second person in Boy Scout Troop 833 to earn his Eagle Award. He went on to serve as Scoutmaster of Troop 833, Activities Director of Troop 821, Explorer Post Advisor, among other scouting leadership positions. He was an outdoors man that loved camping, fishing, hunting, campfires, and canoeing through Algonquin Park. But none could compare to his love of Allegheny State Park, where he spent many a day enjoying God's great gift of nature. Rick joined Adams Fire Company in 1971 and has been a lifelong member, serving as Assistant Fire Chief. He enjoyed serving the community as a fireman, making chowder, fireman parades, water ball, and serving on the committee for restoration of the 1944 Buffalo fire apparatus. He was also a member of Union Hook and Ladder in Tonawanda, where he served as Captain and was a member of the Tonawanda Fireman's Benevolent. Rick went on to be the Founding Father of the Wheatfield Volunteer Firefighter's Benevolent Association in 1996 and became its first President. Rick was employed at several local machine shops as a machinist for many years. He was a lifelong member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda, where he served as an usher. As an avid sports fan, he loved to watch the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres, and NASCAR races. He had a personal interest in Native American Indian lore and loved to tell stories around the campfire. Rick is survived by his mother, Shirley Allen; two sisters, Kathy (Laird) Burkett and Cheryl (Robert) McCall; one brother, Gilbert Allen; and seven nieces and nephews, Jennifer and Daniel Allen, Laird, Larry, and Laura Burkett, Matthew and Todd McCall. On the 24 of April 1954, she married Charles E. Learn. Mary was very generous in donating to charities and one of her most beguiled was the annual Fireman's Toy Fund. She also supported a child from Ecuador, South America for over 25 years, and continuously donated to St. Jude Children's Hospital. Mary was well-known for her baking and cooking and everyone loved her chocolate cakes and apple pies. She loved to sew and made many of her children's clothes when they were young. She could not wait to vacation in Myrtle Beach or around St. Petersburg, FL and Frankenmuth, MI, and through Amish country in Pennsylvania and Ohio. She just liked to travel. She is survived by her husband, Charles; a brother, Richard Bird (Rose Marie) of Niagara Falls; sister, Joan Kralick, also of Niagara Falls; daughter, Deborah Batley and grandson, Dylan of Niagara Falls, and many nieces, nephews and her very close friend, Deborah Bailor, and her loving Border Collie, Haley. Sander in Grace Lutheran Church in Niagara Falls. Gary predeceased her in 1988. She is survived by her daughters, Jodi Grierson (Tim Huether), Kelly (Patrick) Guthrie, Dawn (Rodney) Siegmann and Heidi (Dan) Shively; two brothers, Donnelly (Marjorie) Warrant and John "Jack" (Lucille) Warrant; five granddaughters, three grandsons, numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Together with her husband, children and grandchildren, they worked on their farm. The Carr's operated a fruit stand on Upper Mountain and Military Rds. for over fifty years. Nadine also worked at Neisner's Department Store in Lewiston, NY. She enjoyed being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, family gatherings especially at Christmas, her pet cockatiels and her cats. She is survived by her children, Garry L. He was born on June 30, 1924 to Frank and Helen (nee Polek) Franc. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Aimee Jean Franc, from Liverpool, NY; and his two sisters, Frances Whitehead and Rosie Franc, both of North Tonawanda. He is survived by his four children, Gary Franc (wife, Jaci; son, Derek; daughter, Ashley), Liverpool, NY, Cheryl Epp (husband, Jim; and sons, Jacob and Lucas), East Amherst, NY, James Franc, North Tonawanda, NY, Robin Chilton (husband, Jim; and daughters, Alison and Abigail), North Tonawanda, NY; and many nieces and nephews; and his longtime friend, Jean Feminino. Tony enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He worked as a Social Studies teacher and basketball coach at Niagara-Wheatfield High School retiring in 1986. He served in the Army from 1943 to 1946, during WWII, as a supply clerk in the 33rd Medical Depot Company. He was a well-known billiard player, athlete and sports enthusiast and was honored to be inducted into the North Tonawanda Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007. Tony was a standout basketball player in his youth and was an outstanding baseball player and reached the Triple A level in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. He was a life-time member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church in North Tonawanda. 11649 | May 9, 2012 Allan R. Weinheimer Lockport Union-Sun & Journal INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Allan R. Weinheimer, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away April 22, 2012. Born December 3, 1926 to the late W.Dewey and Muriel T. Weinheimer, Al graduated from Lockport High School. He served in the Navy during WWII, including on the USS Mt. McKinley at the Bikini Atoll Atomic Bomb tests. Following his service he graduated from Purdue University, and taught high school math for 40 years. From 1964-1966, he served as a Ford Foundation Math Consultant in Ankara, Turkey, and received the Presidential Award for Excellence in teaching math in 1989. After his retirement in 1992, he loved to travel, volunteer and participate in various marathons. He is survived by his wife, Jean; two children; eight grandchildren; sister, Helen "Sis" (late Burton) Hall and several nieces and nephews. Burial was in Crown Hill Military Cemetery, Indianapolis. 11650 | May 9, 2012 Lawrence Kenneth Halstead Niagara Gazette LOCKPORT — Lawrence Kenneth Halstead, age 68, of Wilson, died May 7, 2012 in Eastern Niagara Hospital, Lockport, after a lengthy illness. Born November 29, 1943 in Lockport, he was a son of the late James and Dorothy (Swick) Halstead. He attended District #4 School House, a 1962 graduate of Wilson High School - he was looking forward to the 50th reunion; he had attended Bryant and Stratton. Larry worked the Halstead Farm with his father, and was a farm laborer on various other farms in the area. He worked at Sacred Heart R.C. Church as a janitor, was part of the cleaning crew at the Rainbow Mall, and worked at the concession stand at the county building on Cedar in the Falls. Larry loved to read and study history; he also loved to play chess and could win most games in three moves. He loved spending time with family and was a member at Exley United Methodist Church in Wilson, and was a member of AM Gasport. Surviving him is a brother, David (Carol) Halstead of Cuba; a sister, Jean Hayes of E. Wilson; nephews, Wayne (Laurie) Hayes of Tonawanda, Allan Hayes of E. Wilson, and Garry (Joan) Halstead of CA. Also survived by three great-nieces and a great-nephew and many cousins. A memorial service will be held at Exley at a date and time to be announced. Contributions may be made to South Wilson Fire Company or to Wilson Fire Company #1 Ambulance Fund.
