He was born Jan. 8,1916 in Medina, to the late Charles E. and Ethel (Britt) Martin. He has lived for the past 22 years in the San Diego, Calif, area. Prior to moving to California, he had lived most of his life in Medina where he operated his own optical business. In California he worked as an optician until forced to retire due to ill health. He was a member of the San Diego Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Medina Lions Club and the United Presbyterian Church of Medina. In the last few years he had enjoyed square dancing and playing the accordian. Survivors include three daughters and two sons, the Rev. Mary E. Martin of Hartland, Mrs. Allen (Rachel) LaShire of West Virginia, Ms. Carol McDonald of Rochester, David (Joanne) Martin of Gananda, N.Y., Michael (DeAnn) Taylor of Graham, Wash.; 17 grandchildren; three brothers and one sister, Bruce (Peggy) Martin of Medina, Mrs. Edward (Pauline) Firestone of Getzville, Charles (Helen) Martin of Orlando, Fla. Mr. Pittman was born April 28, 1903 in the Town of Barre, the son of the late William and Hattie (Bovaneiser) Pittman. He had lived in the Medina area most of his life. He had farmed in his early years. He had worked for 15 years for Middleport Lumber Co. in Middleport until his retirement in 1968. He was a member of the Senior Citizens of Western Orleans. Mr. Pittman is survived by his wile, Elleta (Axtell) Pittman ; one daughter, Mrs. Jack (Barbara) Wagner of Medina; five grandchildren, David J. Gillmeister, died in 1974. Mr. Gillmeister was bom May 11,1910 in Medina, the son of William and Marie (Ortman) Gillmeister. He lived in the Medina area most of his life and was a methods operator at Harrison Radiator in Lockport until retirement. He was a member of the Orleans County Auxiliary Police Department where he had been a lieutenant, the Shelby Fiie Co and Trinity Lutheran Church, Wolcottsville. Surviving are one son, Stanley N. Gillmeister of Nichols, N.Y.; one daughter, Miss Phyllis E. Gillmeister at home; two grandchildren, Judi and Mark Gillmeister; two brothers, Norman O. Gillmeister of West Shelby and Louis E. Gillmeister of Middleport; and several nieces and nephews. He was also brother of the late Albert F. Gillmeister. Prayers were said at 8:30 this morning at Houseman Funeral Home, 228 Park Ave., followed by a mass of Christian burial at St. Mary's Church at 9 a.m. The Rev. George B. Yiengst officiated and burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Born in Catfield, England, on April 29, 1894, he came to Orleans County as a youth and had spent the last 70 years in Medina. He was self-employed in the used car and car parts business until his retirement in 1958. Mr. Bensley was a member of St. Mary's Church and was a member of the Lincoln Post No. 1483 V.F.W. of Medina, having served in the U.S. 'Army Engineers during World War I in France. 11761 | Medina NY Daily Register Journal - 12/3/1930 Frederick Sahr, 87, the last Civil War veteran of the Tonawandas, died at his home in North Tonawanda yesterday ALSO LAST SURVIVOR OF CIVIL WAR EXPIRES IN THE TONAWANDAS Frederick Sahr, 87, Served with Distinction with Union Army Cavalry NORTH TONAWANDA. Dec. 1.- Frederick Sahr, 87 years old, the last Civil War veteran in the Tonawandas, died Sunday at his home, Niagara Falls boulevard and Sweeney street, North Tonawanda. Born in Germany, Mr. Sahr left that country when three days old, coming to America with his parents and locating in the Martinsville section of North Tonawanda, residing there until his death. During the Civil War he served with distinction in the Union Army as a cavalryman. He was an organizer of W. B. Scott post, G. A. R. Ten years after the war Mr. Sahr began boating on the Erie Canal. He was the owner of a fleet of three boats, which he operated until the close of 1915. He then retired. He is survived by his wife, Ida; three sons, Frederick, Jr., Gustav and Christian Sahr; four daughters, Mrs. Louis Newman, Mrs. Otto Neumann and Miss Eleanor Sahr, all of the Tonawandas, and Mrs. Edward Rosseau,. Barker,. N. Mrs. Bowen was the daughter of Josiah and Phoebe Bullen, old pioneer settlers who bought Tend from a land company and built their home. He was the mechanic's foreman for Anderson Motors in Medina for many years, leaving in 1946 to run his own service station on South Main Street, until he became Orleans County's first dog warden. He then became a school bus driver and mechanic for the Medina School System retiring around 1965. His first wife, Mildred Russell, died in 1953. His second wife, Grace Schultz, died in 1976. He was a member of the Senior Citizens of Western Orleans Inc., an honorary member of the VFW of Medina, a mem^ r of the Odd Fellows of Medina, and his hobbies included hunting, fishing and gardening. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Milton (Kathleen) Houghtaling of Pheonixville, Pa., Mrs. Donald (Virginia) My hill of Medina, Nola B. Holman of Medina; seven grandchildren; five greatgrandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by two sisters and three brothers. There will be no prior visitation. Mr. Hagan. They have lived in Medina all of their lives. Mr. Pritchard worked for the Heinz Co. for 35 years, retiring in 1989. Since that time they have enjoyed traveling to Florida and taking life easy. She was born Nov. 9, 1914 in the Town of Royalton, daughter of the late Henry and Edna (Giertz) Wolfe. She was a member of St. Michael's' Lutheran Church in Wolcottsville. Survivors include her husband, Erwin M. Eick; one son, Erwin H. (Kathleen) Eick of Md^ejport^one^ daughter, Mrs. Edward (Hazel) Schroder of Medon, Mass., two grandchildren, Rebecca and Jessica Eick, both of Middleport. Also seven sisters and one brother, Mrs. Luther (Inez) Fink and Mrs. Dudley (Mabel) Morgan, both of Florida, Erma Glena, Gertrude, Glena, and Mrs. John (Helen) Kozloski, all of Wolcottsville, Mrs. Carlton (Ruth) Ewald of Akron, Mrs. Harvey (Dolores) Ethridge of Newfane, and Kenneth Wolfe of Lockport; also several nieces and nephews. . (UPI) - An 86-year-old Newfane man was killed in a-three vehicle : collision on Stone Road in the Niagara County town of Lockport, sheriffs deputies said. George Zastrow was pronounced dead on arrival at Lockport Memorial Hospital Thursday. Surviving are his wife, Helen, at home; two daughters, Alice Greenwald of Appleton and Margaret Seeloff of Wilson; four sons, Harold of Lockport, Edwin of Ransomville, Arnold of Hartland and Raymond of Newfane; three brothers, John of Tonawanda, Elmer of Wilson and Wilbert of Gasport; five sisters, Mrs. Ida Snyder of Ransomville, Mrs. Elsie Rohring of Lockport, Mrs. Martha Belschner, Mrs. Mabel Miller and Mrs. Hilda Pankow, all of Wilson, also survived by 35 grand- children and nine great- grandchildren.
