12401 | NF Gazette I. E. Walck Stricken At Church Meeting SANBORN-Irwin E. Walck, 50, of 2466 Saunders Settlement Road, this community, died Tuesday, (Sept. 27, 1966) while attending a meeting at St. Peter's Lutheran Church at Walmore. The Tri-Community Ambulance removed Mr. Walck to Mount St. Mary's Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Mr. Walck, a well-known farmer in this area, was born March 20, 1916, in Sanborn, a son of Frederick and Helene Mueller Walck and had operated the farm at the Saunders Settlement address. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, a member of the church council and an exempt member of the Sanborn Volunteer Fire Co. and a member of the Niagara County Extension Service and Farm Bureau. Survivors include his widow, the former Ruth Retzlaff; a son, Glenn Walck; two daughters, Nancy and Fay Walck, all at home; a brother. Edward Walck of Sanborn; two sisters, Mrs. William Walck and Mrs. Martin Pfohl, all of Sanborn. Another sister, Mrs. Elise (sic) Kroening, died in 1965. Funeral services are being arranged at the Pike and Jones Funeral Home, Sanborn. 12402 | NF Gazette Improvised Farm Machine Fatally Injures Six-year-old on Bergholtz Farm. Six-year-old Genevieve Retzloff (sic), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thedore (sic) Retzloff (sic), Bergholtz, was fatally injured at 4:45 p. m. yesterday when she fell from a tractor operated by her father on his farm. and one of the rear wheels of the machine passed over her head, fracturing and crushing her skull. The father rushed the child to Memorial hospital but she was dead when she was carried into the hospital. Coroner W. L. Draper issued a certificate of accidental death after an investigation of the case. The little girl was playing with two other children on the farm and called to her father, asking if she might ride the tractor. She and the other children climbed on a running board, the tractor having been improvised from an old automobile. Retzloff (sic) started off with the children on the running board, according to investigation by authorities. They enjoyed the fun of riding for a time and then the tractor struck a deep hole in the ground and lurched. Genevieve lost her hold on the car and was jolted from it to the ground, her head falling under the machine and one of the rear wheels passing over it. The other children maintained their positions on the tractor and were not injured. Retzloff (sic) stopped the tractor and picked up the crushed form of his little daughter. 12403 | NF Gazette IRENE E. WENDT TOWN OF CAMBRIA - Mrs. Irene E. Wendt, 65, of 5914 Meahl Road, died Saturday (July 29, 1972) in Buffalo General Hospital after a three month illness. She was a native of the Town of Niagara and had lived in this area all of her life. She was a member of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Walmore, and was a member of the church's Service Circle. Survivors include her husband, Alton Wendt, former Town of Cambria Highway superintendant (sic); two sons; Ronald A. Wendt of Lockport, and Joel L. " Jeff " Ewald, age 40 of Akron, Erie County, NY, formerly of Ransomville, NY died Sunday, November 13th, 2005 at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, after being stricken ill at home with an apparent heart attack. Jeff was born in Niagara Falls, Niagara County, NY, on March 1, 1965, the son of Ralph W. and Margaret R. [ Haseley ] Ewald. He had attended St. Peter Lutheran School - Walmore, Sanborn, NY prior to moving to Ransomville, NY, in 1975, where he attended the Wilson Central School. He was a graduate of the Wilson Central High School in the Class of 1983. Jeff was a carpenter, who worked with his father at R W E Woodworking, Inc., following his graduation from high school. Jeff was a collector of John Deere Antiques and memorabilia, who also enjoyed hunting. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, and the WNY Two Cylinder Association. Surviving in addition to his parents are three brothers, Brett [ Sheryl ] Ewald, of Wilson, NY; Shawn [ Stacey ] Ewald, of Larchmont, NY; Shane Ewald of Dallas TX; one sister, Julie [ Hristo ] Doichev, of San Jose, CA; a nephew, Alex Ewald; two nieces, Jessica Ewald; Kaissa Doichev, his paternal grandmother Ruth Ewald, of Akron, Erie County, NY, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. 12405 | NF Gazette John A. Young, 31, of Crown Point. N.Y., a former resident, died Thursday (Aug. 18. 1977) of injuries sustained in an explosion at his home on Aug. 4. Young was attempting to light his home water heater when the gas and tank exploded. He was born in this city the son of the late Robert J. and Florence (Johnson) Young. He attended local schools and graduated from Bishop Duffy High School. He also attended Niagara County Community College, and Castleton State College. He moved to Crown Point about two years ago. Young was very active in sports all his life. Here he played ball with the Little League team. and is believed to have been on the first basketball team formed at NCCC, where he held many sports records. the sixth leading scorer in the nation in basketball. He taught English at Crown Point Central School and also coached the girls softball learn and the junior varsity basketball team. He is survived by his wife, the former Gail Fuller; three children, Jay, Jody and Jill; five brothers, Robert Young, U.S. Army, West Point, Michael Young of Rockwood, Mich., William Young of Florida, David Young of this city, and James Young of Crown Point; five sisters: Mrs. Harold (Jean) Haseley, Mrs. John (Margaret) Galko, Mary Beth Young, all of this city, Mrs. Thomas (Sue Ellen) Greco of Fort Bliss. 12406 | NF Gazette JOHN H. GOMBERT NIAGARA FALLS- John H. Gombert, 90, of 1879 Willow Ave., died Saturday (Nov. 11, 1972) at the Niagara Lutheran Home, Buffalo, after a long illness. Born in the Town of Wheatfield, he lived in the Niagara Falls area all his life. He was formerly employed by the Board of Education for 30 years retiring in 1952. Mr. Gombert was a life member of St. Paul-Calvary Lutheran Church. His wife, the late Elsie Heuer Gombert predeceased him in 1964. He is survived by a daughter, Marian L. Gombert; a son, George J. He was a member of the church council, chairman of the board of elders, a member of the evangelism committee and acted as teen-age Bible class teacher of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church until the time of his death. 12413 | NF Gazette Longtime Pastor In Sanborn, Dies Funeral services for Rev, Edward A Grabau, 84, former minister of St. Peter's Lutheran Church here from 1905 to 1948, will be held at that church at 2 PM Tuesday. Rev. Mr. Grabau died at the home. of his daughter, Mrs. Carl Duwe, East Palestine, OH, today (Aug, 3, I963). He had made his home with Mrs. Duwe for some years. Rev. Mr. Grabau was born in Bergholz and was graduated from Martin Luther Co!Iege in Buffalo in 1899 and The Martin Luther Seminary also in Buffalo, in 1902. He was ordained in July 1902. His father, Rev. John A, Grabau of St James Lutheran Church, Bergholz. baptized his son, confirmed him, officiated at his Marriage to the former Francis.Goers also an area woman, and ordained him. His mother was the former Sophla Harnish. After his ordination, Rev. Edward Grabau served St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Lockport before coming to Sanborn. During his ministry at St. Peters, the current parsonage was built and the Rev Mr. Grabau was active as a teacher in the Christian Day School. Mrs. Grabau died in 1957. After his retirement, Rev. Mr. Grabau continued to live in the area for a short while before moving to Ohio in 1952. Failing eyesight was a factor in that move. He was a pastor emeritus in the Ohio District of the American Lutheran Church. Surviving in addition to the daughter are a brother Theodore Grabau, Bergholz, a sister, Mrs. Helen Broecker, Battle Creek, MI, two grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. Rev. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Walmore Road, was former member of the senior choir, a member of the Farm Bureau Extension Service and director and agent of the Cooperative Fire Insurance Co. of Bergholtz. Mr. Haseley was a charter member, assistant chief and past chief of the Sanborn Volunteer Fire Company and had recently received a life membership into the company. Surviving are his wife, the former Josephine Blank; his mother Mrs. Hulda Haseley. Sanborn; a brother. She was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church and was an honorary member of the LaSalle Yacht Club. She was an avid bowler in the 1950s. Her first husband, Arnold F. Kroening Sr., well known area farmer who died in 1965. Survivors include three sons, Clarence, Edgar and Albert Kroening Jr., all of Sanborn; three sisters, Mrs. Philip (Emma) Fahrnwald, Sanborn, Mrs. Edwin (Lily) DeVantier, and Mrs. Carl (Viola) Milleville, both of Niagara Falls; two brothers, Anthony Haseley, Lockport, and Hubert Haseley, Niagara Falls, and eight grandchildren. Jan. 16-The funeral services for Mrs. Anna Lange, (nee Anna Plaster), 84 years old, were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home at 602 Eighthy (sic) -eighth street, Niagara Falls, and at 2:30 o'clock from the Zion Lutheran church, Cayuga drive, La Salle section, Niagara Falls, the Rev. George Hoyer officiating. Mrs. Lange was born in this village at the Plaster homestead in Cayuga street. She was married to the late August Lange. They resided in Niagara street for many years and conducted a grocery store which was also known as the Niagara Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Lange moved to the LaSalle section 15 years ago. The deceased's husband died about six years ago. Mrs. Lange is survived by one son. Albert, eight daughters, Mrs. Albert Wendt of Lockport, Mrs. P. C. Walck, of Walmore Road, a lifelong resident of Sanborn, died Wednesday (July 2,1986) in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. Walck, 64, operated a dairy farm with his son and brother for many years. He belonged to the Hockey Alumni League and was an exempt member of the Sanborn Fire County, a member of the Sanborn Firemen's Band for more than 30 years and a member of other musical organizations. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Sanborn and he had been very active in area softball leagues during the 1950s and 1960s. Walck was the son of the late Rudolf and Ernestine Walck, husband of the late Jeanette (Mueller) Walck and brother of the late Edna Craft.
