Beutel, 74, of 2427 Lockport Road, was pronounced dead on arrival today (July 9, 1974) in Memorial Medical Center, Niagara Falls, after an apparent heart attack at home. He was a lifelong resident of the Town of Wheatfield, residing at the same address all his life. He had been employed at the Kimberly Clark Corp. as a machine operator where he had worked for over 30 years prior to retiring in 1965. He is survived by his wife, Alice Beutel; seven sons, the Rev. Eugene Beutel of Neptune, N.J., Allen Beutel of San Diego, Calif., Kenneth Beutel of Sanborn, the Rev. LeRoy Beutel of Baltimore, Md., James Beutel and Edwin Beutel Jr., both of Sanborn, the Rev. Donald Beutel of Lockbourne, OH; three daughters, Mrs. Jarry (Jeannette) Kroening of Sanborn, Mrs. Beatrice Lane of Albany and Mrs. James (Audrey) Tierney of Stow, OH; a brother. Walter Beutel of Wheatfield; 34 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Rev. Harold L. 12454 | NF Gazette SANBORN YOUTH BADLY INJURED; STRUCK BY LIMB Injured Thursday Evening and Is Still Unconscious at Falls Hospital. SANBORN. Jan. 26.-Edwin Haseley, 18-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Haseley of the Tuscarora road, south of this village, is confined to the Mt. St. Mary's Hospital, Niagara Falls. with a fractured skull as the result of a coon hunting episode. The accident happened Thursday night and the youth is still unconscious and reported to be in very serious condition. Haseley was walking through a grove near his home on Thursday evening with some other boys when they saw what they believed to be a coon up one of the trees. In an attempt to dislodge the animal a heavy limb was broken from the tree which fell, striking Haseley on the head. Hit by an automobile while walking along the Saunders Settlement road at 9:45 p. m. yesterday, Arthur Wendt, farmer, 42 years old, was fatally injured. The automobile was driven by G. M. Krick, 1722 Whitney avenue. Krick told Coroner W. L. Draper, who investigated the accident, that he was driving west and that the glare from headlights of a car approaching in the opposite direction prevented him from seeing Wendt. Wendt suffered fractures of the neck; skull, both legs and left arm. He was taken to Memorial hospital, but was dead when he arrived there. Wendt was married and leaves a wife and six children. He had lived practically all his life on the Saunders Settlement road, about midway between this city and Sanborn. Born on February 19, 1921 in Niagara Falls, Niagara County, NY, he was the son of the late Alexander F. and Ruth (Plumbsteel) Kelberer. On May 29, 1941, he married the former Evelyn M. Sawyer in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Niagara Falls, Niagara County, NY.Mr. Kelberer was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, Niagara County, NY, attended local schools and graduated from the former Trott Vocational High School. William served in the United States Navy, during World War II, from February 19, 1944 until his honorable discharge on January 28, 1946. From 1940 to 1958 he worked for EI DuPont and later for Georges Appliance, Niagara Welders and aided in the construction of the New York State Power Authority, and then for 24 years he worked for General Motors in Tonawanda, Erie County, NY, where he retired from. Mr. Kelberer was a member of the UAW Local #774, the 40 and 8 Society and the American Legion LaSalle Post #1142, where he served as Post Commander. William enjoyed electrical and mechanic work and watching football.In addition to his beloved wife of 67 years, Mr. Kelberer is survived by three sons, Larry W. Schmidt, Ward road, town of Wheatfield, Niagara court crier and justice of the peace, who succumbed Monday to injuries in an automobile accident, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2.30 o'clock, standard time. Services will be conducted at the Lutheran church at Bergholtz. -- NF Gazette Peace Justice William Schmidt, 71, Dies Here Few Hours After Collision. DRIVER ARRESTED Joseph Szeraj (sic) May Face Manslaughter Charge; Victim Well Known in County. Peace Justice William Schmidt, 71 years old, of the Ward road, Town of Wheatfield, court crier of Niagara County, died at 10:30 o'clock today in Memorial hospital (sic) of injuries received in an automobile accident at 7:30 o'clock this morning, Hulmuth Mallenthine, also of the Ward road, driver of the automobile in which Mr. Schmdit (sic) was riding when the accident occurred, received minor cuts and bruises. Driver is held. Joseph Czekaj, who lives at the intersection of the Town Line road and the Lockport road, driver of the automobile which crashed into the machine in which Mr. Schmidt and Mr. Mallenthine were riding, was arrested by Undersheriff Ira Cowdrick following the crash. He was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Treichler, of Sanborn, and was held in $1,000 bail on a charge of reckless driving. Undersheriff Cowdrick said the charge would probably be changed to one of manslaughter. The accident occurred at the intersection of the Lockport road and the Ward road. Mr. Schmidt and Mr. Mallenthine were on their way to Lockport, Mr. Schmidt to serve as court crier and Mr. Mallenthine to answer a summons for duty on the grand jury. The Mallenthine car was being driven north in the Ward road when it was struck by Czekaj's car, which was coming east in the Lockport road. Mallenthine's car was overturned by the impact and Mr. Schmidt was pinned beneath the wreckage, Undersheriff Cowdrick said that his investigation showed that Czekaj neglected to heed a stop sign before he drove onto the intersection. Draper Investigating Dr. W. L. Draper, coroner, of Niagara. Falls, is investigating the fatality. Dr. William Peart attended Schmidt. Mr. Schmidt was born in Germany and came to the United States 61 years ago. He has lived in Niagara county since coming to this country and was one of the best known residents of the county. He was a former supervisor for the Town of Wheatfield and served as court crier and justice of the peace for many years.
