12656 | NF Gazette May 21, 1934 ALBERT PIKE DIES Former Falls Resident Succumbs to Illness of Year's Duration Albert H. Pike, 57 years old, a former resident of this city, died in Buffalo yesterday, after an illness of about a year. He had been living at the home of his sister, Mrs. Martha McCormick, 136 Vandalie Street, Buffalo, at whose residence the funeral services will be held. Mr. Pike was born and brought up in Thorold, Ontario and after settling here, was employed as machinist by the Shredded Wheat company and also the Wm. A. Rogers, Ltd., working at his trade in this city for 35 years. He was an active member of the local Moose lodge for about 13 years. He gave up this interest about a year or so ago. Mr. Pike had many friends in this city who will morn his passing. He is surved by his sister, Mrs. McCormick: by four daughters, Mrs. Ada McGrath, Mrs. Francesa Carroll and Miss Adelaide Pike, of Rochester, and Mrs. Ethel Colato, of Niagara Falls: two sons, Charles A. Pike, of this city, and Henry R. Pike of Flushing, N. Y. Funeral arrangements will be completed today. 12657 | NF Gazette May 28, 1946 Woman Shoots Self to Death in Home Here Shot through the head in the bedroom of her home shortly after 7 pm. yesterday, Mrs. Ruth Gandt, 44 years old, 3245 North avenue, died almost instantly, acordlngto Coroner James.W. Heary, who said that the fatal wound was self inflicted. Mrs. Gandt has recently suffered a nervous breakdown and was being treated by a physician and, according to her husband, William Gandt, had frequently threatened to end her life. He told Coroner Heary and police who investigated that while he was drinking coffee in the kitchen of his home last evening his wife went into her bedroom and a few minutes later he heard a shot. He investigated and found her lying unconscious on the floor with his 22 calibre rifle under her body. He called police and Patrolmen John J. Collins, Charles Chappie, Detective Lieutenant Thomas Wasley and Detective William Wilson responded and found the woman dead when they arrived. The bullet had entered her right temple and lodged in her brain. Coroner Heary said that although his Investigation is not completed he expects to issue a. certificate of death by suicide. Born in Middleport, June 27, 1901, Mrs. Gandt came to this city 29 years ago. She leaves her husband. William H. Gandt; a son, William A. Gandt, and a brother, Fred R. Loge. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm., Friday at the Gridley Funeral home. 750 Main street, and a half hour later, in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church. The Rev. Leonhard M. She was born June 14, 1896, in the Town of Royalton, daughter of the late Robert and Mary Coulson. She was married to Mr. Giertz Jan. 6, 1915. The couple has lived in the Lockport area all their lives. 12662 | NF Gazette Nov 19, 1958 Autopsy Ordered In Farm Fatality LOCKPORT - A Niagara County coroner has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death Tuesday of a 46-year-old Wolcottsville man. Otto R. Baehr, Sy Rd., Wolcottsville, was dead on arrival at Lockport Memorial Hospital about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. He had been found about 2 p. m. under an apple tree at the farm of Howard Silsby, Kayner Rd., Town of Royalton. He had been picking apples at the Silsby farm. Dr. George Muscato. Lockport, a county coroner, said it is not known whether Mr. Baehr died, from a fall or whether a 22-foot metal ladder he was handling came into contact with a high tension wire. The wire is 24 feet above the ground. Sheriffs deputies said no one witnessed the mishap. Another picker, Albert Brucker, working near by, said he heard a scream and found Mr. Baehr lying on the ground. The First Aid crew from the Gasport Chemical Hose Co. was summoned. Mr. Baehr was born Aug. 26. 1912, at Wright's Corners, Town of Newfane, the son of Otto Baehr and Mrs. Helene Baehr. His mother survives him. Mr. Baehr operated a Gasport restaurant for several years before selling it about 10 years ago. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a brother, Herman Baehr, three sisters, Mrs. Helene Gilbert, Mrs. Evelyn Leffler, all of Middleport. and Mrs. Hilda Brunning, Akron, N. Y. The witnesses will include Steve Kovacich, 25 years old, 1411 Robinson Court, Niagara Falls, driver of the death car, and his wife who was riding with her husband at the time of the accident. The driver will come before Justice George Grawe of the Town of Wheatfield on Friday night on a charge of criminal negligence. Rites will be held tomorrow afternoon for Frerichs. 12671 | NF Gazette Oct 12, 1909 AUGUST RICKERT, HOTELMAN, DEAD August Rickert, one of the best known hotelman in this section of the state died at the family home, No. 426 Elmwood Ave, shortly after 10 o'clock last night of heart failure. Mr. Rickert had been ill of rheumatism since Friday, but it was thought that he was on the road to recovery. He was 59 years old. Mr Rickert was born in the town of Stettin, Germany on August 18th, 1850. he came to the country in 1871. With his parents he settled in Wisconsin. He came to Niagara Falls in 1879 and for eleven years he was employed by the Niagara Falls Brewing Company. August Rickert became the proprietor of the Casino Café in 1890, leaving the casino in 1895, he took over the United States Hotel, now the Empire Hotel at Falls and Second Streets. He remained there until 1901 when he opened up the Richmond Hotel at No. 12 West Falls Street. he was actively in charge of the business until his fatal illness. He is survived by a large family. besides his wife, he leaves five sons, George J. of this city, William H. of Logansport, Ind., Charles E., Frank A., and Fred C. of this city., one daughter, Mrs. C. George Seager of San Francisco, three brothers, William Rickert of Martinsville, Fred and Charles Rickert of this city, four sisters, Mrs. Sentiff and Mrs. Ready of Rochester, Mrs. Jacob Luick of LaSalle, and Mrs. George Enos of this city also survive. Mr. Rickert was a prominent man in fraternal circles. He was a Past Noble Grand of Bellevue Lodge No. 316. I.O.O.F.. and he was a member also of Niagara Falls Lodge No. 346 B.P.O.E. He was affiliated with the Liquor Dealers association. The funeral will be hold tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock from the family home on Elmwood Avenue. The Reverend Albert S. 12673 | NF Gazette Oct 16, 1948 City Worker Dies Of Heart Attack A certificate of death duo to natural causes was issued today by Coroner James W. Heary after an investigation in the case of Albert Metcher, 65, of 613 Twenty-third street, who died in an ambulance yesterday afternoon en route to Memorial hospital. Mr. Metcher, a truck driver for the city, was stricken Wednesday afternoon while driving a city garbage truck in Fifteenth street and was found slumped over the wheel of the truck. He was revived by a Fire department inhalator crew and taken home. At the time it was believed he might have been overcome by carbon monoxide fumes from the truck engine. Coroner Heary said that his investigation indicated that Mr. Metcher was a victim of a heart attack. A native of this city, Mr. Metcher was a city employee for the last 49 years. He was a member of Local 138, State and County Municipal Employees association. Surviving are a sister. He was also a member of the Polar Bear Association of the 339th Regimental Combat Team of World War II and the Unknown Club of the Tonawandas. Dec. 15 - John Wendler. 82, president of the world's largest amusement ride factory, died yesterday following a heart attack at his home, 58 Falconer street. Mr. Wendler became interested in merry-go-rounds while still a boy on his father's farm near Wolcottsburg. Two German immigrants were building the county's first carrousel in a neighbor's barn. He never lost that youthful enthusiasm for the merry go round and in 1899, he left the farm to become a pony painter in the Armitage Herschell company here. He worked up through various jobs to become president and treasurer of the concern, now the Allan Herschell Company, Inc. The compant makes several other rides. Mr. Wendler was a member of St Matthew's Lutheran Church and the Columbia Volunteer Hook & Ladder Company 1. He was also a member of many showman's and carnival organizations including the Showman's League of America, the National Association of Amusement Parks, Pools, and Beaches, and the American Carnival Association. 12699 | NF GAZETTE, Dec 20, 1968 FORMER FALLS MAN DIES OF FLU IN DENVER Arnold Paul Ziemer, 50, a former Niagara Falls resident, died unexpectedly Wednesday (Dec. 18, 1968) in Denver, Colo., where he had been residing. His death was attributed to the flu. Born in Neustadt, Ont., he moved to Niagara Falls in 1930 and resided here until 1942 when he entered the Navy. He served as a naval pilot and flight instructor, obtaining the rank of lieutenant, senior grade. After his release from the Navy, he was graduated from pharmaceutical school in Colorado. He managed several pharmacies in Colorado. Mr. Ziemer is survived by his wife, Mrs. Betti Mae Ziemer two daughters, Amanda and Elizabeth; a grandchild, a sister, Mrs. Ruth Ziemer Schultz, this city; and a brather, Frederick H. Ziemer, of Tonawanda. Funeral services will be held Monday in Denver at the Chapel of Angels at 1 p.m. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Denver. Goerss, 86. of 44 Ransom St. who died Friday (Dec. 27, 1957) at DeGraff Memorial Hospital, will be conducted by the Rev. J. Walter Thiemecke at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Fretthold Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Mr Goerss was born in the Town of Wheatfield and lived the greater part of his life in this city. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and was a carpenter. He retired 15 years ago. Surviving are his wife Mrs. Louis Rung Goerss, three daughters, Mrs. Theodore Jagow, Niagara Falls, Mrs. Herbert A. Milleville and Mrs. Clarence Witkop, both of this city, two sons, Carl A.
