Raymond was born in North Tonawanda, NY, on December 4, 1936, the son of Clarence and Gertrude (Stallard), where he attended local schools and was a graduate of North Tonawanda High School. He was employed as a steamfitter, through Steamfitter's Local # 22, where he was a 50-year member, on numerous manufacturing plants in Western New York. He was a member of the Holy Ghost Lutheran Church Bergholz, NY. He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, the former Arlene F. Szarejko, on August 23, 2003 He hobbies including traveling and maintaining his rental properties. Ray especially enjoyed spending time with his two son's, friends and family. Surviving is his two sons, Ronald R. Kelly of Niagara Falls, NY, Michael S. Kelly of Sanborn, NY; his brothers, Robert Kelly of Boca Raton, FL; Donald (Sara) Kelly of North Tonawanda, NY; sisters, Doris (Robert) DeWees of Canada; Betty Shackle of North Tonawanda, Muriel (Kenneth) Ferchen of Bergholz, NY, Diane (John) Farino of North Tonawanda, NY; a sister-in-law, Lois M. He was the brother of the late Beverly Miller. 12902 | NIAGARA FALLS Thelma E. Sparling, 100, formerly of Lewiston, NY, wife of fifty-two years to the late Thomas L. Sparling, died on Friday, May 14, 2010 at Sunnyside Care Center, East Syracuse, NY. Born on July 25, 1909 in Niagara Falls, NY, she was the daughter of the late Anna and Charles Emerick. Thelma was a secretary for the Chisholm Ryder Co. and the Great Lakes Carbon Co. in Niagara Falls; retiring in 1973. A life member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Niagara Falls, Thelma was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a volunteer for over 20 years with the Meals on Wheels program. Despite being legally blind, she continued to knit blankets for charity until her death. In 2001, Thelma relocated to the Fayetteville- Manlius, NY area to be near her niece and caregiver, Mrs. Frederick (Mollie) Mills, who survives her. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great- nieces and great-great-nephews. Thelma leaves behind, and was grateful for, her friend Connie Marris, and her friends and the wonderful staff at Maple Downs in Fayetteville, Wynwood in Manlius, and Sunnyside Care Center in East Syracuse. In addition to her parents and husband, Thelma was predeceased by one sister, Florence Scholefield and one brother, Clarence Emerick. (nee Prindle) Baxter, 87, of Niagara Falls, NY, entered into rest on Friday, November 26, 2010 in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center in Niagara Falls, NY, following a brief illness. Born on March 14, 1923 in Niagara Falls, NY, she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Mary (Scott) Prindle. Mrs. Baxter was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY. Gloria attended local schools and graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1941. On January 27, 1943, she married Robert R. Baxter. From 1941-1946, Mrs. Baxter was employed by Carborundum. Later, from 1953, Gloria worked as a secretary at South Junior High School, until her retirement in 1983. In addition to her beloved husband of 68 years, Mrs. Baxter is survived by two sons, Mark R. (Suzanne) Baxter of Fairfax, VA and Donald N. (Peg) Baxter of Jacksonville, FL; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Gloria is also survived by one sister, Ruth E. Prindle of New York City and one niece, Gretchen Morgan of Lewiston, NY. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by one son, Rick W. (Bonnie of Clarkston, MI) Baxter; one great-granddaughter, Meghan Baxter and one brother, Robert S. Prindle. 12904 | NIAGARA FALLS — Howard H. Schul, Sr., age 85, of Niagara Falls, was called unexpectedly to his heavenly home on January 19, 2011 at his residence. Born April 30, 1925 in the Town of Niagara, NY, to the late William and Laura (Sachs) Schul. Howard was a World War II Navy veteran, serving on the Shangri La from 1942-1946 and received an honorable discharge. He was an avid gardener, cook and golfer. His sportsmanship was demonstrated when he registered his second hole-in-one, respectively at age 70 and 76. His gardening skills flourished when he diligently planted and labeled a tree for each of his grandchildren, at his Holiday, FL home. Howard retired from DuPont Chemical in 1984. He was a member of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church in Niagara Falls, the Moose Lodge- No. 55 in Holiday, FL, Veterans Association, Buff Social Club, American Legion- Post 0173, and a lifetime member of the Elk's Lodge- No. 346 in Niagara Falls. Howard was predeceased by his wife, Patricia A. (Dugas) Schul on February 5, 2008; and two brothers, Richard and George Schul. Born in Niagara Falls, NY on September 3, 1929, he was the son of Herbert and Marion (Porter) Rolling. On May 27, 1961, he married Dorothy (Marsh) they have been together for 49 1/2 years. Jerald served in the US Air Force from 1950-54 serving in England during the Korean War. Receiving the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He worked at Moore Business Forms in Niagara Falls and Grand Island from 1946 until his retirement in 1988. Jerald was a former member of the Moore Business Forms Bowling League, LaSalle American Legion Post 1142, Niagara Saddle and Bridal Club, Niagara County Genealogical Society, Town of Niagara Historical Society, charter member of Marsh's General Store Coffee Club and a charter member of the Niagara County Sheriff's Mounted Division. 12906 | NIAGARA FALLS — Richard H. Crossley, 69, formerly of 71st St., Niagara Falls, of Cayuga Village, died Monday, August 23, 2010 in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY, on April 9, 1941, the son of the late Vincent Crossley and Ann D. (Maione) Walker. He attended local schools, was a 1959 graduate of Niagara Falls High School and 1972 graduate of Niagara County Community College in with an AAS Degree in Business Management. Mr. Crossley served with the U.S. Army from 1963 until honorably discharged in 1965. He was employed with Tonawanda Merchants and with the International Graphite Company before he began his career with the Exolon Company in 1967. He started as a production clerk and worked his way up to Sales & Production Coordinator, Inventory Manager, District Sales Manager and in 2002 retired as the plant manager. Mr. Crossley was involved in many organizations including the Renaissance Club, the United Way of the Tonawanda's, the Sons and Daughter's of Italy, Power City Lodge, the Tonawanda Chamber of Commerce, and The Dom Polski Hall on Oliver Street in North Tonawanda. In his spare time he enjoyed golfing and bowling. Survivors include his son, Richard W. 12908 | NIAGARA FALLS—Lloyd E. Harrington, 82, past president of Lockport Carpenters Local 280, died May 15, 1990, in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. Born in Akron Oct. 8, 1902, he was the son of Ella Kuhn and George H. Harrington Sr. He moved to Pekin in 1935. He was a member and past president of Carpenters Local 280 for 49 years. He had retired from Wright and Kremer in Niagara Falls, where he had been a superintendent. He was an active member of the Pekin United Methodist Church, where he served as lay leader and trustee. He was also a member and past president of the Pekin Volunteer Fire Co., the Exempt Firemen of Pekin and the Pekin Grange 1202. He was active in 4-H, being the first 4-H leader in Pekin, and he was well known for his square dance calling and auctioneering. His first wife, Ellen Kaegebein Harrington, predeceased him in 1962. He moved to Niagara Falls in 1964. He was also predeceased by three sisters, Mabel Fitch, Ruth Linderman and Beatrice Holzman. He is survived by his wife, Edith Schultz Harrington; his children, the Rev. Roger (Marjorie) Harrington of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Janice LaSal of Medina, the Rev. Caufield received a message from Youngstown stating that his only surviviug brother James Canfield was very low with typhoid pneumonia with little hope of recovery. Mr. Canfield at once started for Youngstown remaining with his brother until he bad passed away, Monday evening at 7.o'clock. Mr. James Canfield was s i x t y , six years of age and has been for tlie past fifty years a prominent citizen of the town of Porter. His first wife died several years ago and about four years since he married a second time the widow s u r v i v i n g h i m . He also leaves four children two of whom reside in this county, one in St. Louis and the fourth in California. His son from St. Louis is expected home to-day. The death leaves our townsmen Mr. Osborn Canfield the only surviving member of this branch of the family. The funeral will be observed from his late residence Friday, at 1 P. 12915 | Niagara Gazette A very pretty wedding took place Saturday morning, June 10, in the rectory of the Sacred Heart church, when Miss Elsie E Morse, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. J. Morse, of Ontario avenue, was united In marriage to Mr. Arthur J. Webb, ton of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. J. Webb, of La- Salle avenue. The Rev. John J. Sheehy performed the ceremony. The bride was lovely In a white net dress made on princess lines, wtih a slight train. Her fingertip veil of double Illusion was made in a halo effect adorned on either side with a cluster of calla lilies and orange bossoms. She carried an arm bouquet of whits roses and gypsophela. Miss Margaret Morse, sister of the bride, her only attendant, was charming In a peach net dress on princess lines, similar to the bride's, with peach accessories. She carried an arm bouquet of yellow roses, snapdragons and gypsophela, tied with blue ribbon. Edward Kernin acted as best man. The brides' mother wore a navy blue chiffon dress with white accessories. Her corsage was of pink roses. The mother of the groom wore a blue printed chiffon with white accessories. Her corsage was of yellow roses. After the wedding ceremony a dinner was held at the Red Coach Inn. Covers were laid for 21 at the bride's table, which was attractively decorated with cut flowers and tapered at either end with ivory candles in silver holders and cen- tered with a large wedding cake. Later a reception was held at the home of the brides' parents. Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Webb left on a tour of the Thousand Islands, the Adirondacks and the eastern part of the state. The bride traveled in a nacy dress with white accessories. On their return Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Webb will reside at 633 Thirty- fourth street. Abate, 65, deputy superintendent of schools, suffered a fatal heart attack Sunday (Feb. 2, 1969) in his home at 8915 Griffon Ave. Mr. Abate, who spent more than 43 years in the city's school system, enjoyed the reputation of spending untold hours in his dedication and devotion to school work. Retirement Planned Mr. Abate was scheduled to retire May 1 of this year, but ° the Board of Education passed a special resolution citing him for his "service and leadership in the educational community, and urged him to stay on to aid newly appointed Schools Supt. Henry J. Kalfas. Mr. Abate had been -acting superintendent of schools from the time the former superintendent, Weldon R. Oliver, reportedly in ailing health, left his desk last November until Mr. Kalfas' appointment last month. Hewas also head of the special committee of educators and citizens working on a plan to integrate Beech Avenue School. Asked to Stay On Mr. Abate, who reached retirement age last fall, in answering the. board's refusal to accept his retirement, said, "It's nice to have the feeling that I'm going to stay a while and help. These are the type of things which have made my life an important one in 43 years with the system." He once said, "If there is any place in the coun'ry where American ideals of the worth and dignity of the indviidual should flourish, it is in the classroom." Born in Italy He got an early start in education. A native of Italy Mr. Abate came to this country with his parents as a child. Because his parents didn't feel that public education was enough, he spent every afternoon atending private school classes His- father and two older brothers went to work in coal mines in West Virginia. All three were killed in a mine accident, after which Mr. Abate's mother brought him and two sisters and two brothers to this city. He attended Cleveland Avenue School and Niagara Falls High School. During.his senior year at Niagara Falls High, the school was destroyed by fire. Mr. Abate and other members of the class of 1922 completed their high school education attending, classes in fire halls, the YMCA and YWCA and gathering for assembly in local movie theaters. He received a bacheloro f arts degree from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1928 and began teaching history and science at North Junior High School, moving to the new high school in 1930. Named Principal In 1942, Mr. Abate was appointed principal of Center Avenue School and after three years in this position, he began his 14-year career as principal of Niagara Street School - the grammar school with the largest enrollment. In 1959 he became director of secondary education . for the school district and the next year was elevated to the deputy's post. While attending Buffalo State Teachers College he met Rosamond Olief. They were married in 1929. He once described his wife as an accomplishedmusician on the piano and organ. Mr. Abate was on the board of directors of the International Center, The Girls Club and the Niagara Community Center. He was a former chairman of the United Givers Fund drive, a member of the Niagara Falls Teachers Association, the American Association of School Administrators, the Cristoforo Colombo Society, the Century Club, and Bacon Memorial United Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Leonard (Mary Ann) Sabato and Miss Rosamond Abate, both of this city; a sister, Mrs. Louise Nanea, of this city, and several nieces and nephews. Rites Tuesday Friends may call at the Lane Funeral Home fro 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday when the family will be present. Dec. 7 -Fred Berndt, Sr., 83 years old. well known retired farmer of the Town of Cambria, died yesterday afternoon at the family home in the Peterson road, after an illness of several months. Mr. Berndt was bora in Germany and came to this country at the age of 37 with his wife, who died 13 years ago. In former years he took an active interest In town and agricultural affairs and had been a successful farmer. He had always resided in this vicinity since coming to the United States. Griebner, whose marriage was solemnized Saturday evening. Beauty baskets and altar vases of white gladioli, pink carnations and huckleberry graced the altar for the double-ring ceremony performed by the Rev. Evan J. Bartell, for the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur C. Rickert, 13th St., and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence F. Griebner, Hewitt Pkwy., Lewiston. White seven branch candelabra entwined, with ivy stood in the chancel and . candelabra marked the pews. Mrs. William Woodman was organist and soloist was Mrs. Alice Ross. The bride who was escorted to the altar by her father wore a white nylon tulle over satin gown fashioned with a pearl studded bodice and a chapellength sweep train. A -scalloped . veil of double illusion was caught to a tulle and lace pillbox encrusted with pearls. She carried a bouquet of pink Pinocchio roses and stcphanotis and wore a string of pearls, the gift of the bridegroom. Miss Betty Swain was maid of honor and bridal attendants were Miss Katherinc A. Ryan and Mrs. Frederic C. Dunning. They were gowned in white lace over Nile green crystalctte with matching jackets and wore rosebud crown headpieces. They carried French colonial bouquets of pink rosebuds and white feathered carnations with green ivy sprays. Jack Griebner was best man for his brother, and seating the guests were Richard Griebner, William Rickert. Frederic C. Dunning and William Krausmann. For greeting guests at the reception at the Red Coach inn, the mother of the bride was gowned in shell pink lace, the bodice accented with pearls and rhinestones and completed with blue accessories. Imported Dior blue lace and chiffon fashioned the gown of the mother of the bridegroom with Which she wore pink accessories. The ensembles of each mother were complemented with corsages of pink carnations. For a honeymoon trip to Williamsburg and Virginia Beach, Va., the bride departed wearing a moss green Jinen sheath dress with a matching green and white check coat and burnt orange and natural straw accessories, set off with a corsage of orange gladioli. Haseley of 2344 Saunders Settlement Road, was not charged. Deputies ° Francis P. Di. Meo, Theodore Kyzmir and Ernest Longo said the driver, was traveling west in Niagara Falls Boulevard about 8:50 p.m. Thursday. He told deputies he had passed a car' and was in the left hand lane when a car coming toward him blinded him with bright lights. He said he then spotted the couple walking in his lane and could not avoid hitting both of them. Both Mr. and Mrs. Dickerson died of head injuries. Mr. Dickerson is survived by his 5-month-old son, Allen Zuch Dickerson; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. james Dickerson Sr., of Niagara Falls; a brother, Gerald Dickerson, of Sanborn; three sisters, Audrey Dickerson and Mrs. Sandra Babcock, both of Barker, and Carol Dickerson, who resides in California. He was the grandson of Frank Dickerson Sr., of Barker. Mrs. Dickerson is survived by her son; her parents, Mrs. Elizabeth Zuch and Leroy Zuch, both of Niagara Falls and her grandparents, Mr and Mrs. Edwin Batt, of Mesa; Ariz. Funeral services will be Monday at the^ Lane Funeral Home. Interment will be at Ac acia Park Cemetery.
