1306 | Obituary Nancy Joy (Waggoner) Miller, 75, of Onset Massachusetts, passed away on November 30th at Royal Cape Cod Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. Nan was born in Niagara Falls, NY. She was the daughter of the late William J. and Evelyn L. (Joy) Waggoner. She graduated from LaSalle Sr. High School in 1965, and attended Graceland College in Lamoni, IA. She raised four sons – Timothy, David, Andrew, and Jeffrey. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sons Jeffrey and Andrew, and aunts/uncles Eleanor and Robert Manning and Kenneth and Marge Waggoner. She is survived by sons Timothy and David Miller, grandchildren, Jeffery, Hannah, Gage and Mackenzie Miller; brothers Gary (Elayne) and John (Gretchen) Waggoner; nieces Stephanie (Brent) Sainz and Jennifer StClair, and nephew Jonathan (Kourtney) Waggoner. She is also survived by 6 great nieces and nephews and many cousins." During her working years she was employed by All-Safe in North Tonawanda, NY, and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, FL. But the job she loved the most was working for Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth MA – she was proud to be part of the Native Interpretation Area and was known on the staff as the “Corn Lady” for the quality of corn that she grew using original methods. In the mid-70s, she contracted Lyme’s Disease before much was known about or treatments were available for the disease. As a result she suffered with bouts of muscle pain and fatigue throughout her life. But that didn’t stop her from doing the things she loved. Nancy was a voracious reader and as a member of the “Friends of the (Wareham) Library” she always seemed to bring home more books than she regularly donated to their book sales. Many years ago she was an accomplished ceramicist, producing beautiful gifts with which she generously blessed her family and others. She had a life-long passion for US History – particularly the Civil War. One of her great joys was visiting Gettysburg and touring the battlefield. She also spent a great deal of time with family genealogy and did a great job of unraveling her family’s ancestors and trying to determine if her family’s roots went back to the pilgrims; she believed she found a direct connection. In the mid-90s, she authored a series of well received historical articles for the Wareham Courier called “Along the Way” where she used her love of local history to describe little known events that had occurred in the area and interesting places that were often missed (particularly cemeteries). She was a lifelong member of Community of Christ. Her cottage was on the Community of Christ campgrounds in Onset, and she loved the sense of fellowship that had evolved there since its founding over 100 years ago. She was very proud that her grandpa Joy was one of the founding members of the campground. She enjoyed being part of the activities, worship services and attending reunions. She served as the New England Mission Center and Onset Congregational Historian for many and was involved in advocating for and supporting youth activities as well as serving as a multi-term member of the Onset Campgrounds Board of Trustees. She was passionate for causes and organizations that were important to her. She became knowledgeable about native plants and was an advocate for growing and preserving native species and coastal habitats. Nancy also was active in the community. She served The Town of Wareham and the Village of Onset on various organizations and boards including the Onset Bay Association, the Wareham Cemetery Commission and the Wareham Historical Commission where she fought to preserve the important legacy of the areas heritage. For many years she worked as an election poll worker for both state and national elections. Nancy deeply loved her family; particularly her grandchildren and of course her cats - Baby Love and Winslow. Nancy made it a point to stay in contact with family members - especially the many cousins on both the Waggoner and Joy sides. Nancy will be missed by all who knew and loved her. The family wishes to express its gratitude to the nurses and staff at Royal Cape Cod Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Hospice for their support and care. | WAGGONER, Nancy Joy (I87069)

1310 | Obituary Rochester: March 31, 2024. Predeceased by her parents, Howard L. and Mary Ruth Ulrich. She is survived by her brothers, William (Veronica) Ulrich and Stephen (Britt) Ulrich, nephews Jeffrey (Julie) Ulrich, Matthew Ulrich, niece Anne (Michael) Shea and several grandnieces and grandnephews. At the time when Brenda Ulrich was a senior at Lockport Senior High School in 1956, the teaching profession primarily employed women, however, very few of them pursued an advanced degree. Over the next 30 years, not only would Brenda achieve her doctoral degree, but she would have an impact on both the methods and standards of education throughout the USA. Brenda was a member of the first graduating class of the “new” Lockport High School on Lincoln Avenue, where she excelled as one of eight classmates - and the only young woman - to receive a New York State Regents Scholarship. From a young age, Brenda aspired to a career in education. Aside from being a member of The Future Teachers of America at LSHS, she could look to her parents for inspiration. Her mother was a teacher in the one-room schoolhouse days in the countryside surrounding Lockport. Her father was a member of the Lockport Public School District’s Board of Education for 10 years, serving as its President in 1968. Brenda applied her scholarship to SUNY Brockport and was conferred a Bachelor’s of Science degree in General Education in 1960. During her time at Brockport, she was on the Dean’s List all four years, was active in student government and was the editor of the yearbook, “The Saga.” After attaining a Master’s Degree in Reading Development at Syracuse University, she then enrolled in the doctoral program at Arizona State University. Her Doctorate was awarded to her in 1974. Dr. Beal then joined the Education Department of Humboldt State University, becoming the first woman with a Ph.D hired into the Education Department in the 60-year history of the institution. One program at Humboldt State that she was particularly proud of is the nationally-recognized Indian Teacher Education Program. For 15 years, Dr. Beal taught a wide variety of classes and played a strong role in the evaluation of curriculum materials for Native American students that focused on teaching methods of cultural subjects. For 10 years, Dr. Beal was a delegate to the California State Policy Council of the California Teachers Association (CTA). During much of that time, she was the Chair of the Credentials and Professional Development Policy Committee, setting the standards for qualifying for a teaching license in California and providing guidelines for professional advancement in education. Reaching beyond the California State College system, Dr. Beal served as an examiner for the National Council on the Accreditation of Teacher Education College and University Programs. In this role, she led rigorous examinations of several institutions of higher learning to verify that their programs to instruct students to become teachers met high national standards. After two decades at Humboldt State, Dr. Beal returned to Western New York and settled in Le Roy. She soon accepted a professorship in Reading Development at SUNY Genesee Community College in Batavia. In her close to 50 years at the head of the classroom, Dr. Beal taught at the elementary, secondary, community college, undergraduate and graduate levels, a feat not matched by many educators. Outside the classroom, Dr. Beal was a member of the Arcata California Historical Society, held the position of President of the SUNY Brockport Alumni Association, acted as Treasurer of the Women’s Council of the Rochester Institute of Technology, and was a Board Member and Docent of the Le Roy Historical Association. Brenda was an active traveler to both foreign and domestic destinations. She was a big sports fan of a wide range of sports, but NFL football and the Buffalo Bills were a clear #1 favorite. Retirement did not squelch her thirst for learning; Brenda took numerous cruises and tours via Elderhostel and Road Scholar and attended classes at the Osher Lifelong Learning Association at RIT for many years. A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, June 10th from 10AM-12PM at Anthony Funeral Chapel, 2305 Monroe Avenue, Rochester, NY. | ULRICH, Dr Brenda U (I226097)

1329 | Obituary Burpee William Marshall- 87 During the Korean War Burt served as a navigation radar and sonar operator in the Naval Air Force. He once spotted and followed an enemy submarine for several hours by plane before being relieved by another aircraft. After his service Burt returned home to Niagara Falls where he met the love of his life, Joan Delorenzo, who he married as soon as she was of age. The two were married for over 60 years. One of his favorite moments in life was on a vacation in Africa where in their hotel room she said “I feel like a queen.” Burt loved telling that story. They had two children, Jeffrey Marshall and Loretta Marshall. Unfortunately both Jeff and Joan predeceased Burt; Jeffrey in 2006 and Joan in 2014. He lived out the remainder of his days with his daughter Loretta Brink in Columbus Ohio where the two played at least one game of rummy nearly every single day. Burt was a man of great faith. As was his whole family. He continued in that faith until his dying day knowing in his heart after closing his eyes, he’d open them once again and see all of his loved ones, most notably his wife of 60 years. Burt was also a man who spoke his mind. If you’d done something wrong, he’d let you know quickly and directly. His entire family including his 5 grandsons and 5 great grandchildren benefited from those direct moral lessons. He was a man of style (his friends called him ‘The Dandy”), adventure, photography, great margaritas, friendship and love. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. (Burt was born as the 5th child in October 1933 to Kenny and Elizabeth Marshall in Niagara Falls, NY.) | MARSHALL, Burpee W (I165508)
