He was reported to have suffered a heart attack. Mr. Mess, born in Scotland, had been employed by the company for the last 24 years as an operator. He was a member of St. James Lodge 156. St. Mary's Hospital after a four months ill- ness. Her husband, William F. Pen- dergast ST., died in November. She was born in Lockport and is survived by her father, Henry Keller, Los Angeles, Calif.; four sons, James E., John R., Charles L.. and Thomas P. Pendergast, all of this city; four daughters. 13103 | Niagara Gazette Former City Alderman Dies at 72 NORTH TONAWANDA— Benjamin H. Lindhurst 72, of 251 Payne Ave., a former city alderman, died Tuesday (Sept. 24, 1963) at DeGraff Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was a lifelong resident of this city and a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church and a member of the official board of St. John's Home for Children in Buffalo. Mr. Lindhurst, a letter carrier here for 40 years, retired in 1951. He was a longtime member of the National Association of Letter Carriers and also a member of the National Association of Retired Civil Service Employes. He was a member of Columbia Hook and Ladder Co. No 1, North Tonawanda Firemen's Benevolent Association and the Junior Order of United American Mechanics. Survivors include his widow, Florence Strassel Lindhurst; a son, Kenneth Lindhurst; two daughters, Mrs. Louis Ri c h e r t and Mrs. Albert Krueger; two sisters, Mrs. Edward Doody and Mrs. Nelson Forsyth, and nine grandchildren all of this city. He had lived in Niagara Falls for 40 years and was employed as a car inspector by the Lehigh Valley railroad here for 35 years. He was pensioned last March. Mr. Budde was a member of Zion Luth- eran church and the Young Men's club of the church. He was also a member of two Falls lodges, the Mac- cabees and the Foresters. He is survived by his wife, Chris- tina; three sons, Herman and Clay- ton, both of this city, and Fred of Detroit; four daughters, Mrs. Harry Bell and Mrs. George Utley, both of this city; Mrs. Ray Schum, of Elmira and Mrs. George Liersch, this city. 13108 | Niagara Gazette Frank E. Pethybridge, 70. of 909 Orchard Drive, Lewiston, died in Memorial Hospital Monday night (March 29, 1965) after an eight-month illness. Mr. Pethybridge was a methods engineer at Moore Business Forms Inc. until his retirement in 1960. He was elected "Outstanding Key Man of the Year" by the Niagara Falls lndManagement Club in 1959. He was born in London, England, on Feb. 2, 1895. He came to Canada in 1907. He served with the U.S. Army Medical Corps in France during World War I. He graduated from Tri- State College , Angola, Ind., and was employed by the former USL Battery Corp. in Highland Avenue. He worked for Kimberly Clark Corp. here before being employed by Moore Business Forms Inc. as a time study engineer in 1942. At Moore, Mr. Pethybridge worked as a methods engineer for eight years before his retirement. He was also chairman of Moore's Buffalo Avenue plant safety committee. He was a member of the Niagara Falls Industrial Management Club and was editor of the club's publication, "Power Line." He was a| member of the fire prevention j division of the Niagara Falls Area Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Pethybridge was a past president of the Cataract Camera Club and was editor of the club bulletin. He was a member of the Photographic Society of America and had received many prizes for his color photography. He was a member of the Niagara Frontier Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Niagara Falls Kiwanis Club, Retired Men's Club and the Lewiston Lions Club. He was a well-known area gardener and was also a camper. Mr. Pethybridge was a member of the Lewiston First Presbyterian Church and was a deacon of the church. The family said that donations to the Lewiston First Presbyterian Church and the Niagara Frontier Council, Boy Scouts of America, will be acceptable as tributes. Survivors include his wife, Kleah Baxter Pethybridge, at home; twin daughters, Mrs Robert (Elaine) Howard, Youngstown, and Mrs. Jack (Lorraine) Hickey, Schenectady; a sister, Mrs. Luther Deal, this city; a brother, William A. Pethybridge, this city, and three grandsons. A memorial service will be conducted at the Lewiston First Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. Saturday by Rev. Paul L. Denise and Rev. 13109 | Niagara Gazette FRANK J. BUFFONE Frank J. Buffone, 85 of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on Tuesday November 18, 2008 in Veterans Administration Hospital in Buffalo, NY. Born February 26, 1923 in Beyer, PA, he was the son of the late Pasquale and Clara (S'Dao) Buffone. Frank moved to Niagara Falls as a young child with his family. He attended 17th and 24th Street Elementary, Gaskill Jr, Trott Vocational High, graduated from Niagara Falls High School and went on to college. Frank entered the military service at age 19. He served in the United States Army during World War II with the 291st Company ‘C’ of the first Army. He fought and was wounded while establishing a beachhead during the invasion of France on July 11, 1944. Frank was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, a Unit Citation, European Theater Medal and World War II Victory Medal. On January 8, 1951, he married June D. (Julian) Buffone in Niagara Falls, NY. Mrs. Buffone predeceased him November 11, 2004. Together, they moved to Los Angeles, CA and later Phoenix, AZ, returning to Niagara Falls in late 1952. Frank worked as a real estate broker for the former Ferrusi Real Estate Co. and Parisi Real Estate Co. in Niagara Falls. He later went on to work as a self employed tax consultant until his retirement. Mr. Buffone was a sports enthusiast who loved baseball and football. He was one of the founding members and past president of the LaSalle Zone 6 Little League in Niagara Falls. He was also an accomplished musician and passionate Frank Sinatra fan. In his early years, he played saxophone and clarinet for several local bands and orchestras alongside renowned guitarist Tommy Tedesco. In his leisure time, Frank also enjoyed gardening and tending to his tomato plants. He loved his family especially his grandchildren. Mr. Buffone is survived by his six children, Karen Buffone of Niagara Falls, NY, Michael (Darlene) Buffone of Ashburn, VA, Patrick Buffone of Niagara Falls, NY, Philip (Nancy) Buffone of the Town of Niagara, NY, Nancy (Charles) Pitarresi of Niagara Falls, NY and Douglas Buffone of Cheektowaga, NY; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Frances Buffone of Niagara Falls, NY, Margaret (Nash) Ognibene of the Town of Niagara, NY, his brother-in-law Paul Julian of Sanborn, NY; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. He was also predeceased by two sisters, Isabel Hoffman, Mary Ann (Joseph of Niagara Falls, NY) Figurilli; and one brother, Joseph (Rosalie of Niagara Falls, NY) Buffone. White, 54, of 1 Freeman Ave., the Town of Royalton superintendent of highways, died after suffering an apparent heart attack Saturday (June 24, 1967). in the Town of Hartland, son of Thomas F. and Carrie Zent White. He was stricken ill at home and died in a physician's office. Mr. White was a member of St. Stephen's Church and the Holy Name Society of the church. He was a member of Clute-Phillips Post 938 American Legion and served for four years in World War II, most of the time in the Aleution Islands. He served as superintendent of public works of the Village of Middleport for 15 years and has been Town of Royalton superintendent of highways for the last four years. George Mess, for 25 years a well known and respected resident of this city, died yesterday afternoon at his home, No. 1639 Niagara avenue. He had been ill enough to be confined to his bed only one day. Death was due to arterio-scherosis. Mr. Mess was born in Germany 71 years ago. He emigrated from there with his parents, when he was 17 years old, and settled at Ayton, Ont. where he met and married Katherine Guinther, soon after. He came to Niagara Falls with his family in 1897 starting a mason contracting busi- ness which he conducted successful- ly until his retirement five years ago. On May 12, of this year, he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran church, and served for 17 years as an elder on the church coun- cil. He was also a member of Ni- agara River Lodge, No. 785, F. and A.M.; Niagara Chapter, No. 190, R. A. M.; Niagara Commandery, No. 61 K.t. and Ismailia Temple, of Buf- falo. The following survive him besides his wife: Three daughters, Mrs. Henry Laur, Mrs. Jacob Mack, Mrs. Charles Mack two sons, Willian and Henry G. Mess, all of this city; a sis- ter, Mrs. Margaret Miller of New York and 10 grandchildren. Born on September 18, 1923 in Niagara Falls, NY, she was the daughter of the late Gordon and Mary (Goupil) Sawyer. Mrs. Kelberer was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY, attended local schools and graduated from the former Trott Vocational High School. On May 29, 1941, Evelyn married William Kelberer in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. He predeceased her on September 30, 2008. During World War II, she worked for Carborundum, Moore Business Forms, Nabisco and the DeVeaux School. Mrs. Kelberer was an active member of the former Church of the Redeemer Episcopal Church, where she served as Lay Reader, Chalice Bearer, Choir Member, Altar Guild Member and Redeemer Guild Treasurer. Evelyn was also a registered Girl Scout Leader for many years. She enjoyed puzzles and spending time with her grandchildren. Mrs. Kelberer is survived by four children, Gail Mason of Sanborn, NY, Larry W. (Terry) Kelberer of Colorado Springs, CO, Gary A. (Bonnie) Kelberer of Cheltenham, MD, and Alexander G. 13136 | Niagara Gazette GRAND ISLANDA Niagara Falls man was found dead in his car from a gunshot wound in the head in Alt Boulevard shortly before noon today. The Erie County Sheriff's Department identified him as Nicholas Sandonato, 47, of 2916 Limvood Ave., Niagara Falls, who is co-owner of the Ivanhoe and Hiawatha inns in Buffalo Ave. Mr. Sandonato was found slumped in the front seat of his ear. A ,38-caliber revolver was found in the front seat of the 1959 station wagon. Investigates Death The body was f o u n d by H e r b e r t Scott of 2677 Fix Road. Sgt. Harold E. Gailbraith of the Erie County Sheriff's Department, who investigated, said the death was an apparent suicide. Mr. Sandonato suffered a bullet wound on the right side of his head above his temple. Sheriff's deputies said that Mr. Sandonato's car was observed standing In Alt Boulevard, about a quArter mile found, at 11 p.m. Monday. "We have no reason to suspect foul play," said a sheriff's deputy- Examiner It Celled Erie C o u n t y Medical Examiner Duane Daugherty was called to the scene. He declined to issue a death certificate pending further Investigation. Mr. Sandonato is survived by his wife and three children. He served his country as a SSgt. in the U.S. Air Force. On February 7, 1945, he married Mildred L. Moebius in Trinity Old Lutheran Church, Buffalo, NY She has preceded him in death in December 2009. Mr. MaGinn was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Niagara Falls and held the position of Council President a few times and also was a Bethel Bible instructor. He loved his church and his Lord. He also enjoyed golf in his earlier days and also loved entering contests and receiving mail. Survivors include two sons, the Rev. 13145 | Niagara Gazette January 24, 2010 Anthony S. Bruno Anthony Salvatore Bruno, 77, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Mt. St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, NY. Born in Niagara Falls, he was the son of the late Vincenzo and Palma (DiPaola) Bruno. A lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, Anthony attended local schools and graduated from Trott Vocational High School in June 1950. Mr. Bruno started working at the International Paper Company in the early 1960's and was employed there until its closing. He later worked in quality control at Carborundum Corporation until he retired in the mid 1990's. In his leisure, he enjoyed bowling and was a member of the American Legion Portage Post 1465 and the Embassy Club, both in Niagara Falls. During the Korean War he served in the United States Army as a Private First Class from November 17, 1952, until his honorable discharge on December 16, 1954. While serving in the Army, Mr. Bruno was wounded by a mortar round in the Battle of Christmas Hill, and was hospitalized for four months in Japan. He was never presented his Purple Heart Award until many years later as that the military paperwork proving the injury had been lost in a 1973 fire at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. It was through the efforts of a friend, Leo Ciskiewicz, and Rep. Louise Slaughter, who helped cut through the federal red tape, that he finally received his award in the summer of 2009. The family would like to thank Mr. Ciskiewicz and Rep. Slaughter for all of their hard work in helping to honor Anthony. Survivors include his two sisters, Angeline (late Sam) Marinello of Niagara Falls, NY and Stella (late Joseph) Maietta of Youngstown, NY; nieces and nephews, Sam Marinello, Joseph Maietta, Lora (Russell) Daniels, Diane Domanico, and Carmen Marinello and many great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Anthony was predeceased by his sister, Ann (late Louis) Badiali. There is no prior visitation. She is also survived by several grandchildren; 11 great-grand-children and several nieces and nephews.Jeanette was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church and served in many roles including Past President of the Church Council, member of the Altar Guild and attended Bible Study for many years. Jeanette was the Executive Secretary for K-D Supply for over 22 years. She was a charter member of the Meadow Elementary School PTA, serving as President for a few years. He came to this area in 1942 as a CIO representative assigned to the Gas, Coke and Chemical Union and retired eight years ago. I^ter, he became involved in labor politics serving with the original labor's Non-Partisan League, the Political Action Committee and the Committee on Political Education.
