Broecker, died Tuesday (May 17, 1966) at Ransomville General Hospital after a long illness. Mrs. Broecker was a mem ber of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and a charter member of the Ladies Guild of the Church. She was a lifelong resident of this area. Her husband, Gustav Broecker died in 1952. Other survivors include another son, Henry F. Broecker, Town of Wheatfield; two d a u g h t e r s , Mrs. Edward Wheatfield, and Mrs. Robert (Alice) Waterstrat, Lockport; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive. Morath, Jr., 95, formerly of Maple Avenue, passed away on Monday, November 1, 2010 in DeGraff Memorial Hospital, North Tonawanda, NY, following a brief illness. Born on August 30, 1915 in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Harry R. and Marie (Ruopp) Morath, Sr. Mr. Morath was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY and attended local schools. On December 2, 1939, Harry married the former Marian J. Goodman. She predeceased him in 1998 after 59 years of marriage. For 42 years, he worked for Niagara Mohawk, retiring in 1976 as a Traveling Operator. Mr. Morath was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church. In 1939, Harry built a summer cottage (Camp HA-JU-MA-MA) at Rushford Lake, which became a special place where he enjoyed visits from family and friends. An avid fisherman, Harry was also known as an expert woodworker. During his retirement, he continued to use his woodworking skills enjoying building cabinets and displays at Goodman’s Farm Market for many years. Mr. Morath is survived by two children, Judith (late Thomas) Rogers of Buena Vista, VA and Mark (Minda) Morath of State College, PA; six grandchildren, Tricia (James) DeSantis of Silver Creek, NY, Traci (Michael) Potter of Owego, NY, Jamie (Josh) Heynes of Fairview, PA, Mark (Erin) Morath II of Hughesville, PA, Megan Morath of State College, PA, and Laura (Jon) Fickinger of Burlington, KY; four great-grandchildren, Carli Potter, Preston Heynes and Kate and Andrew Fickinger and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Harry was predeceased by one sister, Geraldine (late Thomas) Goater. Also surviving is a special niece, Marlene Goater Mueller, who was a constant visitor and companion during Harry’s five years as a resident of ElderWood. Ken was a past president and owner of Stange Agency, Inc. He retired in 1994 after 43 years. Prior to the Stange Agency he worked as a Cabinetmaker for Gratwick Lumber. He was an active life-long member of St. Mark Lutheran Church; he served as Superintendent of St. Mark Cemetery and had served as Treasurer of St. Mark for many years as well as in various other positions. He was a Yankees fan and enjoyed traveling in his motor home and handing out his "free ticket." He was the son of the late John and Elsie (Meyers) Stange. Knize, age 63, of North Tonawanda, died unexpectedly, Monday, November 15, 2010 in the Waterfront Health Care Center in Buffalo, after a brief illness. Ken was born November 20, 1946 in Niagara Falls, NY, the son of Mary J. (Melancon) Knize of Lewiston and the late Henry J. Knize. He was a 1966 graduate of Lewiston Porter High School and received an Associates Degree in 1968 from Niagara County Community College. In August of 1969 he began his career with the NY State Department of Transportation. Ken retired as a Senior Engineering Technician in May of 2007. He had lived in North Tonawanda since 1985. Ken was a unique person who certainly marched to the beat of his own drummer. Never having lost his innocent, childlike quality, Ken was content in his own world. He recently described himself as "stuck in the '50's", still talking about Buddy Holly's death and his admiration for Roy Orbison. In his heaven, Ken is driving around in the Knight Rider KITT car and "rockin' around the clock" with his 1950's musical heroes. In addition to his mother, Ken is survived by a sister, Linda (James) Knize-Harper of Colorado Springs, CO; and a niece, Eileen Harper. Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Henry, 95, formerly of North Tonawanda, died peacefully Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at the Country Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Carthage, NY. She had resided there since May of 2009. Mary was born August 9, 1915 in North Tonawanda, the daughter of George W. and Lillian Wilke Kroening. She married Duane D. Henry July 21, 1940, in North Tonawanda. She was a school teacher in North Tonawanda for 26 years. Mr. Henry died September 28, 1975. Following her retirement Mary worked as a volunteer for Literacy Volunteers group and traveled extensively. She was a member of Payne Avenue Christian Church in North Tonawanda. She moved to the Watertown, NY area in 2003. She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Gretchen and Ned Martelle of Henderson, NY; a son and his wife, William and Katie Henry of Caledonia, NY; a son-in-law, Albert Welle of Lily Dale, NY; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Welle on August 10, 2007. Burial will be in Acacia Park Cemetery, North Tonawanda. She was born on February 18, 1928 in DuBois, PA, to the late Oscar and Blanche (Knarr) Horn. Mary was a homemaker, enjoyed crafts of any kind, was an avid Bingo player, loved to play Cribbage, and travel with her late husband Gerald A. Shaffer of 56 years. The family moved to Niagara Falls, NY in 1950. Mary was employed in the Niagara Wheatfield School district as a lunch aid and a librarian assistant. She was a member of St. John Ev. Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid, and the St. Johnsburg Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, holding many offices throughout the years. Mary was the beloved mother of Bonnie (Roger) Lemke, Connie (Fredrick) Robinson, Linda (Timothy) Tomsen and Barbara (William) Jakobi; loving grandmother of Jim, Jewel, Jerry, Rob, Dan, Tim, Laura, Janelle and Kayla; great-grandmother of Casey, Nick, Shawn, Alyssa, Shawn, Felicia, Daniel and Peter; dear sister of the late Lillian Brainerd-Adams, Oscar "Bill" Horn, Ruby Smith, Lee Horn and Margaret (Horn); sister-in-law to Blaine (Barb) Shaffer, the late Earl (Mae) Shaffer and Dorothy (George) Reese; also surviving are many nieces and nephews. 13364 | Niagara Gazette NORTH TONAWANDA-A certificate of suicide has been issued in the death of 26-year- old Lewis Joseph Baum Jr., 82 fuller Ave., who was pro- nounced dead on arrival Sun- day (March 20, 1960) at De- Graff Memorial Hospital. Mr. Baum was taken to the hospital in a Twin City Am- vulance after he was found lying on the floor of the fam- iy garage. His head was cov- ered by a plastic motor cover, into which the exhaust pipe of his car was inserted. When the body was discov- ered by his mother, Mrs. Lil- ian Baum, the car ignition was on but the gas tank was empty. the car radio was still playing faintly. Dr. John C. Kinzly, county coroner, pronounced Mr. Baum dead at the hospital and is- sued a certificate of death by suicide from carbon monoxide poisoning. Friends said they knew no reason why Mr. Baum would take his own life. He was des- cribed as generally good na- tured. Born in this city, he was graduated from old North Tonawanda High School in 1953. He served in Germany with the U.S. Army from 1956- 1958. He was a member of St. Francis of Asissi Church. He was employed by the Loblaw Bakery, Buffalo. In addition to his mother, surviving are his father, Lew- is J. Baum Sr.; a brother, Ron- ald D. Baum; and a sister, Miss Mary L. Baum, all at home. Helwig will Investigate the burning to death of Mrs. Julia Sherman and Mrs. Emma Meahl of Niagara Falls and Arnold Cumrow of North Ridge, In an automobile accident on the Lehigh Valley railroad crossing on the Ellicott creek road last Saturday night. The inquest will be held at that city hall. As the death of Adelbert Sherman of Niagara Falls, the fourth memb e r , of the automobile party, occurred In Erle county, the investigation will have to be held by Erie county officials. ALSO Phelps NY Citizen - 4/26/1923 All four, who were riding In Adel- bert Sherman's automobile when it was hit, by a Lehigh Valley freight train at the Ellicott creek crossing, Tonawanda, are dead. Sherman's body has been recovered from the creek. His forehead was crushed In and it is. probable he was dead before he fell, in the water. Those who died at the Tonawanda hospital were Mrs. Julia Sherman, wife of the owner of the machine Mrs. Emma Meahl, wife of Jacob Meahl, Niagara Falls, and Arnold Cumrow of North Ridge road, Ransomville. Mr. and Mrs. Sherman .are survived by two children and Mrs. Meahl is survived by two children and her husband. According to.Mr. Meahl, Mr.Sher-. man and the party drove to the Buffalo pubic market to get groceries.. and supplies for Sunday and were on their way home. Born in Wilson, NY on August 2, 1924 to George and Ida Seefeldt, Barney lived most of his life in the Ransomville, NY area. He was a WWII Veteran serving in the U.S. Navy Armed Guard from 1943 to 1945. During this time he was a Gunners Mate on the SS Rufus W. Peckham, where he was injured during battle for which he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Victory Medal. Barney worked as a carpenter in his early years for NU-Trend Homes. He was well-known throughout the Ransomville area as a "Master" carpenter and worked on many homes in the area. He became a fireman and worked early on at the fire station at Fort Niagara before it became a State Park. Later he was a fireman for the Bell Aerosystems Co. in Wheatfield, NY. He was also the Town of Porter Building Inspector for 25 years, retiring in 1990. Barney was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 4781 in Ocala, FL. He also served as past Commander of the VFW Lake Ontario Post 313 in Youngstown, NY. He enjoyed many years vacationing in Canada on Lake Mississagagon where he owned two cottages, one of which he built. He also enjoyed many years at his hunting camp in Little Valley, NY, where he enjoyed many years with family and friends. His hobbies included fishing, hunting and woodworking. He spent the last several years of his life being a caregiver for his beloved wife, Dorothy, who greatly appreciated his care and love. Barney was married to Dorothy R. Oliphant for 65 years, who died on September 22, 2010. 13387 | Niagara Gazette PALM DESERT, CA — Giuseppe Pietrocarlo passed away on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at Odyssey Hospice in Palm Desert, California, at the age of 80. He was the son of the late Giulia (nee Masocco) and Antonio Pietrocarlo. He was born in Giuliano di Roma, Italy and at the age of 13 was apprenticed as a bricklayer in Genoa, Italy. Originally he emigrated to Canada in October 1953 where he lived and worked in Niagara Falls, Ontario. There he worked as a bricklayer performing general construction. Eventually accompanied by his brothers they started a small contracting business of their own. During that time he met the late Delores S. Forgione, and they married in September 1960 in Niagara Falls, NY. In 1962 Giuseppe and Delores moved to Southern California for approximately two years. They returned to Western New York where they settled in Youngstown in 1966, and Giuseppe became a citizen that year as well. He worked as a bricklayer for various contractors, and then secured a position with the New York Power Authority in 1975 and was employed there until 1989, when he retired. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, hunting, traveling to California and visiting with friends and family. Mrs. Plaster died Wednesday (April 12, 1961) shortly after arriving at a motel in Sarasota, Fla. She left this city last Saturday for a visit in Florida. Mrs. Plaster was born July 7, 1882, in Bergholtz. Her husband was P a u l P. Plaster, deputy c i t y controller, who died in February 1959. Mrs. Plaster was active in the Trinity Lutheran Church and its Guild and Missionary League. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. J a m e s W. Strasburg, Lewiston; four sisters, Mrs. Julius Greinert and Mrs. Benjamin Schulz, both of North Tonawanda; Mrs. R u d o l p h Schultz, Sanborn, and Mrs. Frederick G. A member of one of the pioneer families of this area. Miss Whitney was born on the Whitney farm. Lockport road. Town of Niagara. She retired 20 years ago after teaching 40 years at the Cleveland a v e n u e , Fifth street and Third street schools. She and her sister. Miss Emma Whitney, were lifelong workers at the First Presbyterian church. The Whitney family membership started in 1831 when Theodore Whitney, grandfather of the Whitney sisters. 13397 | Niagara Gazette RANSOMVILLE — Delilah (Urtel) Grzybowski, age 85, of Ransomville, went to her heavenly home on Sunday, October 17, 2010 in the Eastern Niagara Hospital in Newfane, after a brief illness. Delilah was born June 4, 1925 in Wilson, the eldest daughter of the late Edward and Mabel (Rohring) Urtel. She attended a one room school house on Chestnut Rd. in Wilson where she excelled, especially in spelling, and had won the Buffalo Evening News Spelling Bee. Delilah graduated from Wilson High School in 1942 at age 16, the first in her family to do so. She then attended business school where she earned her comptometer license. Delilah married Max J. Grzybowski on June 24, 1950. Max predeceased her on March 11, 1987. She was employed in the payroll office at Harrison Radiator in the 1950’s until she left to raise her family, and was a Niagara County Election Inspector for 45 years. Delilah enjoyed sewing, baking, gardening and was heavily involved with local 4H Programs with her daughters in the 60’s and 70’s. She was a member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church at North Ridge, St. Peter’s Ladies Aide Society, the Wilson Lakeshore Mother’s Club and the Ransomville Rural Retirees. Delilah loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren whom she loved dearly and was so very proud of. She never missed a play, dance recital, concert or graduation ceremony, and attended as many sports events as time would allow. She is survived by her four daughters, Mary Jo (Kenneth) Higginbotham of Santa Clarita, CA, Janice (James) Sievert and Maxanne (Bill) Rees, both of Wilson, and Gretchen (Leo) Fournier of Ransomville; her grandchildren, Scott and Michelle Higginbotham, Joe and Jackie Sievert, Mercedees, Trey and Quinn Rees, Cooper, Logan and Bailey Fournier; her great-grandchildren, Shaianne Higginbotham, Serena Gelfman and Jaden Higginbotham. She was the beloved sister of Harold Urtel, Russell (Dorothy) Urtel, Helen (William) Bye, Elton "Bob" (Phyllis) Urtel, Hazel (Robert) Walker and the late Lawrence (Ann) Urtel. Joan was born November 29, 1953 in Niagara Falls, NY, the daughter of the late James and Loretta (Buttery) Canfield. She was a 1971 graduate of Lewiston Porter High School. For 10 years she owned and operated Woods Insurance Agency in Ransomville. Prior to that she had worked in her family’s restaurant, The Shanty, on Lake Rd., in Ransomville. Joan married Thomas Woods in September of 1987. She is survived by her husband, Tom; a son, James (Danelle) Veillette of Detroit, MI; her sisters, Susan (Steven) Hillman of Ransomville and Brenda (Stephen) Swidergal of Grand Island; a granddaughter, Hayden Veillette and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Judith Canfield. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 12 at 11:00 AM in the Cambria United Church of Christ, 4045 Lower Mt. Rd., Town of Cambria.
