Myers, 72, of 4206 Eide Road, died unexpectedly Wednesday (Oct. 22, 1969) at his home, of apparent natural causes, Mr. Myers was bom July 16, 1897, son of the late Oliver and Martha Myers, in the Town of Porter. Born in Owen Sound, Ont., she came to Niagara Falls in .1920. She was a New York Central Railroad crossing guard for 20 years, retiring in 1968. Rogring, 23, who was found dead Sunday in the dining room of his home at 464 Lake St. Niagara County C o r o n e r Willis C. Strickland issued the certificate. Rohring was found at 1 p.m. by a cousin. C o r o n er Strickland said he was found lying on the dining room floor. A shot gun was found nearby. Born in Lockport, the son of Donald and Jean Mclntyre Rohring, he had been a student in the Wilson Central School, systems. He was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1967 to Febrcary of this year serving a tour of chity in Vietnam. Mr. Rohring was an employe of Harrison Radiator Inc. in Lockpoet. Surviving in addition to his parents are two brothers, Terry Rohring of Ransomville and David Rohring serving with the Armed Forces in Korea; his m a t e r n al grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Mclntyre of Lockport and his paternal grandfather, Walter Rohring of Gasport. . Swick, 81, of Lake Road, a fruit grower, real estate broker and former peace justice here, died at Inter-Community Memorial hospital, Newfane on Thursday (May 25, 1967) after a short illness. Mr. Swick was born in Wilson, Jan. 8, 1886 and attended local schools. He also attended Cornell University's School of Agric u l t u r e . H6 served as peace justice for 32 years. In 1908, he married the form e r Florence W e b s t e r . On March 31 of this year, the couple celebrated their 59th wedd i n g anniversary. SWICK They had lived at the present address for the last 38 years. He was a well-known fruit grower in this area and has held many offices in organizations connected with fruit growing. He recently was re-elected vice president and director of the Niagara Frontier Growers Market Inc. of Buffalo. He was past director of the New. York-New England Apple Institute. He also served as president of the Ni* agara County Farm and Homebuilders and 4-H Club Organization. He was president of the Niag-* ara County Peach Growers Association. In 1958, Mr. Swick received the Acme Nu-Way Markets Award as the "outstanding grower of the Niagara Frontier." He also was active in civic and religious affairs. Planning Board Members He was a member of the Wilson Planning Board and a director of the North Ridge Cemetery Association. He was past president and an active member of the Wilson Lions Club for 2? years. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Wilson where he served as deacon. In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, Ronald W, Swick of Wilson; two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Frances) diez of Ransomville, Mrs. Clifford (Lucille) Upton of Wilson; two brothers, C l a r e n c e of Capitol Heights, Md., and Louis of Lockport. He also is survived by a sister, Mrs. Gladys Clark of Cleveland and 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Mr. Schultz had lived and farmed in the Town of Wilson for 60 years. He was born Nov. 12, 1879 in Germany, the son of August and Sophie Schultz. 13510 | Niagara Gazette Word has been the death of John 87, a Niagara Falls native who was vice president, treasurer and director of Acheson Graphite Co. until it was dissolved in 1944. Mr. Deringer, who was born here Nov. 22, 1882, the eldest son of John W. and Margaret Wagner Deringer, died i n Kintnersville, Pa. Jan. 8, 1970. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Griselda Plater o f Kintnersville; a grandson, and a sister, Mrs. William G. Smale, Niagara Falls. Mr. Deringer dictated facts about himself to a local law office in 1967. He noted he went to grammar school from the age of 6 to 13. During the Grover Cleveland administration his father, a carpenter, could not find work and since the family drew the line at applying to the county relief officer, he went to work as an office boy at the Carter- Crume Co., which is now Moore Business Forms Inc. He was engaged at $2.50 a week and almost at once started at night school studying accounting and shorthand. A short time later he was put in charge of the Carter-Crume order department. Three years later he applied to the new Acheson Graphite Co. and he said that because the delivery of equipment was late, for two months he and the son of the furnace man worked s e p a r a t i n g carborundum from graphite for test purposes. A Mr. Collins, who was in charge, had to let him go but promised he would be given a job back if he needed one. He next applied to t he Niagara Silver Co. got a job as office boy and a few months later was made an aide to the bookkeeper and another boy was hired to take his place. "After five years of poor wages, I finally decided that wages would be slow unless I joined the Baptist Church," he said. At the age of- 21, in the year 1904, he rejoined Acheson. He became assistant to Frank Coe, the treasurer, and when Acheson Oildag Co. was formed he was asked by Dr. Acheson if he cared to move to Port Huron, Mich. Mr. Deringer became treasurer of the new company and in 1912 he became a member of a delegation going to London to open a new Acheson office. He was named secretary to the company with the duty of treasurer in England. In 1925 Mr. Deringer became company treasurer in New York City. In 1944 the Acheson Corp. was dissolved "for President Roosevelt was planning to adopt a much higher tax on intercorporate dividends than previously, which would hit us very hard for all the dividends the family owned passed through our funds." 13512 | Niagara Gazette YOUNGSTOWN — James W. Strasburg, of Youngstown, NY, passed away on Wednesday, February 23, 2011, in Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence, Lewiston, NY. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY, on October 24, 1920, the son of the late Robert and Violet (Wendt) Strasburg. Mr. Strasburg graduated from Niagara Falls High School and had attended Cornell University. He served with the US ARMY Air Corps as a 1st Lt. during World War II and later served for 26 years with the Air Force Reserve, 914th Carrier Group as a navigator, before retiring in 1970. Mr. Strasburg was the sales manager for Wendt's Dairy from 1947 until 1965 and had owned and operated a dry-cleaners and Laundromat for several years. He then became the Vice President of the Food Service Division with Tops Markets, from 1965 to 1991, where he became a consultant for Tops, from 1991 until retiring in 1994. Mr. Strasburg is survived by his wife, Roberta M. (Wilson) Strasburg; one son, Stephen (Debra) Strasburg of Ann Arbor, MI; two daughters, Susan (Stephen) Hartman of Sioux Falls, SD and Cynthia (John) Koeneman of Barrington, IL; three-step daughters, Diane (Garry) Carr of Youngstown, NY, Denise (Dennis) Hoover of Ransomville, NY and Debra (Andy) Roberts of Niagara Falls, ON. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, ten step-grandchildren, fourteen step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Allen Strasburg, Alice (Arnold) Becken, Ruth (John) Schnadeeck. Hoover, 75 of 6030 Hoover Road, a well known farmer in this area, and founder of Hoover's Dairy 45 years ago, died Friday (Nov. 1, 1968) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, after an illness of several months. He was born at his residence on on Sept. 27, 1892, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Hoover. At the time of his death, he was president of the dairy, in association with his sons Eugene and Lloyd. He was a member of the Niagara Falls Milk Council; the Forest Lodge 202, lOOF, for more than 50 years; and North Tonawanda Enterprise Encampment Lodge 88. Survivors besides his sons include his widow, Lucille; two daughters, Mrs. J. 13520 | Niagara Gazette ELLEN J. SCZEPCZENSKI Ellen J. (Taylor) Sczepczenski, 80 years old, died Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at her home after a long illness while under the care of Niagara Hospice. At the time of her death she was surrounded by her loving children. She was born in Niagara Falls on May 19, 1926, the daughter of the late George M. and Winifred B. (Plumsteel) Taylor. Mrs. Sczepczenski attended local schools and graduated from Niagara Falls High School. For many years she ran the office at the former Niagara Radio and TV on Hyde Park Blvd. for her late husband Robert. She later worked as a bookkeeper for 15 years at Niagara Business. Mrs. Sczepczenski was a member of the LaSalle Church of Christ; the Niagara Presbyterian + 50 Club; the St. James Senior Club and the Echota Club. She enjoyed baking for her family and her church and will especially be remembered for her cookie baking. Mrs. Sczepczenski is survived by her sons, James (Deborah) Sczepczenski of Riverside, CA and Mark (Susan) Sczepczenski of Niagara Falls and her daughters, Carol (Michael) Rydzewski of Angola, NY, Christine (Harold) Earley of Noblesville, IN, Marian (David) Homiszczak of Niagara Falls, Diane (Jeffery) O'Callaghan of Sanborn and Susan (late Mark) Haseley, of Niagara Falls. She is also survived by 27 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was born on April 1, 1908 in Sanborn, N.Y. and came to Venice, Fla. from Charlottesville, Virginia in 1978. She attended St. Peter's Lutheran Parochial School, Walmore Rd, Town of Niagara, N.Y. and public school in the Town of Wheatfield Sanborn, N.Y. and graduated from North Tonawanda high school. In 1926, she graduated as a Registered Nurse from Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and 1934 she attended Niagara University. She was also a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Venice, Fla. Survivors include her nephew, Rev. Dr. Eugene W. Beutel of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania; her two nieces, Lorraine Taylor of Portland, Connecticut and Helen Marie Voelker of Martinsburg, West Virginia; eighteen other nephews and eight nieces. She was an avid bingo player. She lived at Fairchild Nursing Home, Lewiston, for the last five years. A native of Lockport, she sold apples at the City Market that were grown on the fruit and dairy farm she and her husband, Clarence E. Sherwood, operated, retiring 10 years ago. "People still ask for my mother at the market," said her daughter, Mrs. Lee (Norma) Kier of Sanborn. "It was like her social life. She had many friends there. "Her philosophy was to sell good stuff; she never tried to put anything over on anyone. My parents were true farmers at heart, who care what they sell to the public and take pride in their produce," she said. Before Mrs. Sherwood married more than 60 years ago, she had worked in Lockport as a weaver, operating eight looms at once in her prime, Mrs. Kier said. 13538 | Niagara Gazette Bernice Fischer Card player worked for area schools LEWISTON - Bernice "Nellie" (Stoltz) Fischer, 83, of Saunders Settlement Road, died Saturday (April 17, 1999) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital. She was born Nov. 20, 1915, in Niagara Falls, the daughter of David and Jennie (Kline) Stoltz. Mrs. Fischer was a 1934 graduate of Niagara Falls High School. On Oct. 7, 1939, she married Lawrence G. Fisher of Niagara Falls. He predeceased her. A longtime resident of the Town of Lewiston, Mrs. Fischer was a member of the Niagara Falls Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and her family had long historical ties to the area. Her great-grandfather, Matthias Kline, was a captain in the' New York State Militia during the War of 1812. Colonial Village is built on land originally owned by the Kline family, and at the time of her death, Mrs. Fischer lived in a house that was built by her husband on a portion of Kline land. From 1935 to 1940, she worked in the billing department at the Carborundum Co. She and several of her former co-workers kept in close touch for four decades, during which the “Carbo Girls� met for lunch regularly. Later, she was a volunteer in the office of Lewiston No. 9 (Colonial Village) Elementary School, becoming its first secretary in 1954. She worked for the Niagara Wheatfield Central School District from its founding in 1955 until her retirement in 1978, holding elementary, high school and junior high school secretarial positions before moving to the business office at the district's Central Office in 1969. She was elected to the Niagara-Wheatfield Board of Education in 1978, serving until 1982. Mrs. Fischer was a longtime member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, and had served on the church council. She was a charter member and past president of both the Ladies Auxiliary of Lewiston Fire Co. No.2 and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Niagara County Volunteer Firemen's Association. She also was a member of the Flagler Chapter 355 of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Sunshine Senior Citizens Club, and the American Association of Retired Persons. Family members said she was a serious and dedicated bridge enthusiast who played several times weekly, and her 80th birthday celebration was organized as a card and game party. She is survived by two daughters, Gail Hubbard of Centreville, Va., and Nancy Kessler of West Seneca; three grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren. 13542 | Niagara Gazette David C. Washburn, 69 of Niagara Falls, NY passed away on June 1, 2016 at Buffalo General Hospital. Born in Oneida, NY he was the son of the late Theodore and Mary (Magliocca) Washburn. David moved to the Niagara Falls area with his family in the early 1950's. He attended local schools and graduated from Niagara County Community College. On June 15, 1991, he married Caroline L. (Nebsky) Washburn. David worked as a credit manager for several area companies and retired from Modern Disposal Corporation. For many years he also worked as a security officer at several local venues, and was most notably known as the 'Peace Keeper' at Cruisers Bar. David was an outstanding athlete in high school and was inducted into the Niagara Wheatfield Sports Hall of Fame. He was passionate about exercising and especially enjoyed taking long walks along the Niagara River with his beloved dog, Harry. David was also a member of the NRA, a Chevrolet Corvette fanatic and had a love for animals, as well as oldies music and television. He also enjoyed his annual Fathers Day bologna steak sandwich at Old Man River Restaurant. In addition to his beloved wife of 25 years, he is survived by his children, Terry (Cheryl) Vollmer of Tonawanda, Melinda (Scott) Brydges of Sanborn; his step-children, Michelle Hughes of Lockport, Dawn (Steve) Super of California and Caroline Tidwell of Florida. He was the grandfather of, Alexis Brydges, Catherine Hughes, Alexis, Zachary and Nicholas Tulman, Rebecca and Jacqueline Tidwell and late Michael Tidwell; brother of, Ted (Connie) Washburn of Wheatfield and Michele (David) Wallace of Atlanta. She owned and operated Schleef's Grocery Store in Wolcottsville for 25 years, retiring in 1990. She was a member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Wolcottsville and a former member of the Wolcottsville Fire Auxiliary. Mrs. Schleef enjoyed her family and was an avid bingo player. She was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters, John Pech, Lawrence Pech, Helen Eldred, Ruth Stephanek and Alice Tosti. She is survived by her husband, Theodore W. Mrs. Evans began her career as a telephone operator for the New York Bell Telephone Company in Niagara Falls, and retired as an office manager after many years of service. Locally, she was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston, past matron of the Niagara Frontier Chapter No. 658 Order of the Eastern Star, and a life member of the Flagler Chapter No. 355 Order of the Eastern Star, the Telephone Pioneers, and the âThursday Nightersâ� Home Extension of Lewiston. Moving to Tavares, FL in 1975, Mrs. Evans was an active. member of the community, where she belonged to the Central Christian Church of Tavares, the Telephone Pioneers, and the Tavares Recreation Association. Her husband, Lewis Evans, whom she married on October 13,1934, predeceased Mrs. Evans in 1972. Mrs. Evans is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families. Cruickshank, 70, of Lantana, Fla., who once operated two local businesses with her husband, She died in John Fitzgerald Kennedy Hospital in Lantana Tuesday (March 19, 1985). Mrs. Cruickshank and her husband, Duncan S. Cruickshank Sr., ran the LaSalle Sports Shop on Buffalo Avenue until about 1964. They later operated Esther's Flower and Produce Shop on River Road in Wheatfield until retiring, They had maintained residences in Niagara Falls and Florida, "That was her whole life, the family and the business," said her daughter-in-law, Judith Cruickshank, of Wheatfield, "She worked very hard all those years." A native and longtime resident of Niagara Falls, Mrs. Cruickshank enjoyed flowers and growing things, her daughter-in-law said, She is survived by a son, Duncan S.
