Private Sylvester Seefreid, 23. of i
Camp Shelby. Miss., had died at j
that camp after an operation. On
Wednesday the youth's parents re- '
ceived a telegram stating that the
soldier was seriously ill.
Seefreid wa.s well known through- ,
out the city. Besides hi** parents he
is survived by one brother, Joseph,
and three sisters, Mrs. Lawrence
LaJoie, Mrs. Allen LaJoie and Mrs.
Glenwood Proefrock, all of North
Tonawanda.
The youth's body will be returned
to this city

Amelia B. Pfohl, 65, a lifelong resident
of Niagara county, died today
at the family home, Lockport road,
after a long Illness. Mrs. Pfohl was
bom In the village of Bergholtz. N.
Y. She was a member of St. Peter's
church al Walmore. N. Y., and In
former years was active In Its organizations.
Mrs. Pfohl is survived by her
husband. Fred J. Pfohl. at home:
two daughters, Ella Pfohl. of the
town of Niagara, and Mrs. Arthur
Retzloff. of Sanborn. N. Y.: two
sons. Henry and Adolph Pfohl. of
Sanborn, N. Y.; three sisters. Mrs.
Albertlna Mueller and Mrs. Albert
DeVantler. R.F.D. 1. Niagara Falls,
N. Y., and Mrs. Edward Blumerich,
of Niagara Falls. N. Y., six grandchildren
and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services will be held from
the Lockport road home Thursday
afternoon at 3 o'clock and at 3:30
at 8t. Peter's church. Walmore. The
Rev. Edward Graubau will officiate.
Interment will be In Walmore cemetery.

Mrs. Jennie E. Aldous. 62. Creek
road, Youngstown, formerly of this
city, who suffered a cerebral stroke
two months ago, died at Memorial
hospital today where she had been
a patient for seven weeks. She and
her husband. John H. Aldous. who
died last September 11, resided at
645 Elmwood avenue for 25 years
until la.st April when they went to
Youngstown to make their home
with their daughter, Mrs. Edna
Cole, who survives.
Born December 12. 1874, at Blue
Bell. Pa., a daughter of the late
Oliver and Mary Ann Shenline Lutz.
Mrs. Aldous came to this city 38
years ago.
Other survivors Include three sisters
and two brothers, Mrs. Edna
Rath. St. Petersburg, Fla.. Mrs. Alice
Ortstadt and Mrs. Louis Griffith,
this city; Albert and Howard Lutz,
Norristown, Pa.
Funeral services will be held at 2
p. m., Friday at the Gridley Funeral
home, 750 Main street. The Rev.
Arthur H. Schmoyer, D. D., pastor
of Zion Evangelical Lutheran
church, Michigan avenue and Tenth
street, will officiate. Interment will
be in Riverdale cemetery.

Arthur A. Batts, 68, retired president and board chairman of the
Carborundum company and one of this city's' most prominent business
and civic leaders for many yeas, died today at Clearwater. Fla., where
he went recently to make his home.
'Mr. Batts, who rose through the
ranks from office boy to head of
the Carborundum company during
the years of his employment there,
retired as chairman of the board-of
directors February 28, 1949.
In October, Mr. Batts, who had

Jr., this city, who said that.funeral'
arrangements have not yet been
completed.
Mr. Batts entered the employ of
the then young Carborundum company
on his graduation from Niagara
Falls high school in 1901 as
an office boy when the company
employed 150 persons.
He gradually won promotions
from office boy to junior clerk, to
junior executive, his first important
post being assistant to the treasurer.
He later became off ice. manager, and
then assistant secretary in 1920 and
secretary in 1927.
Became Director in 1938
Mr. Batts was made a member
of the board of directors of the
company in 1938, and in 1942 when
the late Dr. Frank J. Tone was'made
chairman of the board, Mr. Batts
became president of the company.
He was presjdent until 1947, when
he became board chairman; which
position he held until his retirement.
Since'his retirement Mr. Batts had
served as chairman '"of the Northwestern
Water authority,- a special
body set Up by the state Legislature
to develop additional water supplies
for Western New York
Mr. Batts also was active in other
Niagara Falls financial, business and
civic 'organizations and had served
as a director of the National Association
of Manufacturers, the American
Management association, the
Controllers' institute and the As
sociated Industries of New York
State. .
City Trust company from 1943 until
pany employing upwards of'5,000
workers. Mr- Batts was acquainted
with a large majority of the employes
and; maintained keen interest in
their welfare and problems,
He also was active in the 'affairs, of
Epiphany Episcopal church and
served as senior warden' and chairman
of the finance committee.
Aided City's Welfare
- A keen interest in the welfare'.of
the community was shown during the
greater part, of his life by.Mr. Batts,
who gave much of his time to:the
Chamber of Commerce, Community
Chest, American Red Cross and Rotary
club, having served as president
of the. Rotary. He had served aeyeral
iimes as chairman of the industrial
division of the Community Chest
drives and assisted other community
organizations.
He was a member of the Niagara
club and the Niagara Falls Country
club, which are flying their flags
at half staff today.in.his memory.
When informed of-Mr. Baits' death
today,- Clinton F. Robinson, president
of the Carborundum company,
expressed his deep fegret.
"The Carborundum family and
the entire community have lost a
beloved friend," Mr. Robinson said.
Mr. Batts-served for many" years
as a member of the Board of Trustees
of Memorial hospital and was
a former president and member of
the board of governors of the Niagara
Falls Country club for nine
years. He served several terms as
president of the Chamber of Commerce
and was its national counsellor.
Mr. Batts' only survivors are his
son here, his wife, Mrs. Mabel Bradley
Batts, and two grandchildren.

Frank R. Ashcroft, 68, a former
resident of the LaSalle area, died
today in Sebatian, Fla., after a
lingering illness from a heart con-
dition.
A former employe of the Car-
borundum Co., where for some
years he was foreman of the ma-
chine shop. Mr. Ashcroft retired
about three years ago.
Surviving are his wife. Mrs.
Laura Ashcroft; two sons, Richard
Ashcroft, Braley Rd., Youngs-
town. and John Ashcroft. Fair-
banks, Alaska; two daughters, Mrs.
Marie Ditzel, Fairbanks, Alaska,
former Gazette employe, and Mrs.
Helen Poole, Albuquerque, N.M.;
four sisters, Mrs. George Tuohey,
Mrs. Gabriel McGrath, Mrs. Elwin
Townsend, all of this city, and Mrs.
Ernest Pett, Niagara Falls, Ont.;
and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at
the Rhoney Funeral Home at a
time to be arranged.

died at Lockport Memorial Hospital Sunday (Jan. 7.
1968)
He was born in Germany,
Aug. 16, 1887. the son of Frederick
and Caroline Boehnke
Nagel and was brought to this
country at the age of 2. He had
lived in Lockport for the last
78 years where he was a retired
tool and die machinist for
the Harrison Radiator Division
of General Motors Corp. here.
He was a member and former
officer for the Trinity Lutheran
Church.
Mr. Nagel. leaves his wife, the
former Augusta Seeloff; two
daughters, Miss Margaret Nagel,
Mrs. A l f r e d (Dorothy)
Yeager. both of- Lockport; four
grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren;
six brothers, Fred of
Chicago, 111., Charles of Lan-
sing, Mich., Paul of Detroit.
Mich., August of Indian Rocks
Beach, Fla.. and Earl and Walter
of Lockport; three sisters,
Mrs. Pauline Siebert and Mrs.

Mr. Nagel also was the father

A verdict of death from heart disease
was rendered by Coroner J. V.
Farruggta- today In the case of Frederick
H. Bennett, of 1036 Fairfield
avenue, who was stricken at Main
street and Niagara avenue yesterday
afternoon and died before he was admitted
to Memorial hospital.
Mr. Bennett, a native of Avon. N.
Y.. had resided In Niagara Palls for
about 25 years. Previous to seven
vears ago he waa employed for 20
years as a mechanic by the Lehigh
Valley railroad. He is survived by his
wife. Mrs. Clara I. Bennett: three
sons, John, Ralph and Grant Ben-
nett, all of this city; three daughters,
Mrs. Edward York, of this city, Mrs.
Henry Reubens, of Sanborn, and Mrs.
Ross Cornell, of Clifton Springs, and
a brother, Cyrus E. Bennett, of Buf-
falo.
Plans for the funeral were being
completed today.

The bride Is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Gothold .Walck, of sixth
street, and the bridegroom Is the
son. of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Orr,
of Lewiston Heights.
° A smart street-length frock of
dusty rose was chosen by the bride,
with which she wore black accessories.
Her corsage was of roses
and violets.
Miss Emily Walck. her sister's only
attendant, wore an attractive frock
of biscuit crepe, with brown accessories.
Her corsage was of gardenias.
Mr. Paul Johnson was Lieutenant
Orr's best man.
After the ceremony there was a
wedding supper at the Red Coach
Inn for the members of the immediate
families. The mother of the
bride wore a gown of black, with
touches of white, and the mother
of the bridegroom wore a gown of
smart black. Each wore a corsage
of gardenias. Mrs. William O. Wallace,
grandmother of the bridegroom,
wore a gown of garnet
shade, with corsage of gardenias.
After a brief trip, Lieutenant Orr
will return to Camp Stewart, Ga.,
where he is stationed. He is the
grandson of the late Senator Wallace
and is a graduate of the Niagara
Falls high school. Cornell university
and Cornell Law school. The
bride, a graduate of the Niagara
Falls high, school and of the
Broughton School, is a member of
the staff in the law office of Francis
T. Findlay, prominent attorney
of this city.

BUFFALO, Jan 9 - Two Negro
youths. John Pearson. 18. and
Charles W. Simms. 16. were charged
with first degree murder last night
n connection with the bludgeon
slaying of William T. Toenniessen,
68, last November 3. District Attorney
Leo J. Hagerty said.
Toenniessen was bludgeoned to
death as he lay in bed at the rear
of a delicatessen store In Buffalo's
east side. His sister. Mrs Amelia
Manweiler, 58, owner of the store,
was beaten and seriously Injured as
she attempted to aid her brother.
She has recovered.
Deputy Police Commissioner Oscar
H. Dabritz said "the motive for the
attacks was robbery."

E. Cain, 43, died suddenly from a
heart attack yesterday afternoon
at his home, 450 Washburn St, The
firemen's emergency squad was
called but was unable to revive him.
Born at Medina, Jan. 3. 1911,
Mr. Cain was the son of Mrs. Lillian
Reed Cain and the late Evih J.
Cain. He had lived here since the
age of seven.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth
Arlington Cain; one son, Richard
A. Cain, this city; his mother, and
one brother, James W. Cain both
of Gasport.
Services will be held Monday at
2:30 p.m. at the Prudden Funeral
Home with interment in Cold
Spring Cemetery.

Paul Robert Bovanizer, nineyear-
old son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert
R. Bovanizer, 190 59th St., died
unexpectedly at Mt. St. Mary's
Hospital yesterday after an operation
for appendicitis.
Paul was taken to the hospital
for surgery on Friday apparently
for a juptured appendix.
He was born in Syracuse and
was a member of a Cub Scout pack
there. He attended the fourth grade
at the Sixty-sixth Street School in
this city and was a member of the
LaSalle YMCA.
Besides his parents, he is survived
by two sisters, Carol and
Nancy Bovanizer, and his grandparents,
Mrs. Ruth Bovanizer and
Mr. and Mrs. William Forbes, all
of this city.
Funeral services will be conducted
at the Hardison-Ingram Funeral
Home at 2 p.m. Wednesday
by the Rev. Ray K. Hallin.
Burial will be in Memorial Park
Cemetery.

LOCKPORT-A seventeenyear-
old L o c k p o r t High
School senior, William Putnam,
today lost his fight for
life against cancer.
His left leg was amputated
earlier this year. A malignancy
in the leg developed
after an injury in the high
school gymnasium. Wlliam
underwent extensive surgery
and hospitalization and appeared
en route to recovery
when complications set in
seven weeks ago.
He died this morning at
Sisters Hospital in Buffalo.
William was born.May 24,
1945, the son of W. Herbert
and Marie Bartenstein Putnam.
He is survived by his
parents, one sister, Judith
Putnam; one brother, Donald
Putnam, all of Lockport; his
paternal grandparents, Mr.
and Mrs. Henry Putnam and
his.maternal grandmother,
Mrs. Anna Bartenstein, air of
Lockport.
Keenly, interested in radio,
William was a. licensed amateur

Amateur Radio Club,

Niagara Falls today lost one of its. best-known
sports figures.
Milton W. Krum of 210 60th St., freshman coach at
NiagaraUniversity died at home shortly after midnight.
An-inhalator was called at 12:41 a.m. after Mr. Krum
awakened with a pain in.his chest He was pronounced
dead by a physician called to the house. ,.
Coach Krum devoted his life to sports.
He joined the NU coaching
staff for; the 1960-61 school
year. At that time, he had
been a high school coach for
34 years.
He was born in Buffalo. He
attended North' Tonawanda
High School and was graduated
from C e n t r a l High
School, Springfield,. Mass. A
s t a r athlete, Krum played
varsity football, basketball and
was on the swimming and
track squads.-
Before 1922, he had worked
as a desk clerk at the North
Tonawanda YMGA, and served
as instructor at that city's
playgrounds and as a physical
a i r e c t o r ' for the Buffalo
YMCA, a camp counselor and
an assistant camp director for
the same organization.
In 1926 he graduated from
Springfield College, Springfield,
Mass. with a bachelor's
degree in physical education.
At college he played varsity
football and baseball and was
on the swimming team. He
played intramural" basketball
and went out for boxing and
t r a c k .
He instructed freshman gymnasium
and football arid be
came an instructor arid life
guard in the college pool and
worked as an assistant high
school sports director.
After college, he became director
.of'• health and physical
education at Bucksport Seminary,
Bucksport, Maine. There
he coached football, basketball,
"baseball and track. He
originated health and hygiene
programs.
In 1928, he accepted the
post of director of health and
physical education in Rocky
River, Ohio, public schools.
He resigned i n 1930 to accept"
a postgraduate .scholarship'
at the; University of Alabama,
but financial reverses
forced him to forego it in
favor of a job as instructor in
classroom,; gymnasium and
swimming for e l e m e n t a ry
classes of the Niagara Falls
school system.
In 1031 he transferred to
LaSalle Junior-Senior High
School where he developed
the physical and health education

From 1956 to 1960 he was
at LaSalle Senior High School
Where he was chairman, of
the health, physical education
and athletic departments.
He was swimming coach and
taught healh and instructed
in gym and pool.
At Trott, his teams won two
Class A sectional championships,
At N i a g a r a University,
where he started as trainer
of basikethall,: brack and base-,
ball, he. succeeded Lloyd Patr
terson. He later was varsity
baseball vcoach and freshman
basketball coach.. He directed
intramural sports.
He was a member of Niagara
Frontier Lodge No. 132,
F&AM;' the. Zion; Lutheran
Church and the LaSalle Yacht
Club.
Surviving are his wife Mrs.
Louise B. Krum; a dauaghter,,
Mrs. James Heller, Berne,
N. Y.,: abrother Earl Krum,
Auburn, and one grandchild.

pretty, the tying of the nuptial knot

The bride, who was given in mar-
riage by her brother, Mr. William
Gabrielli, wore a gown of baby blue
taffeta with square neckline short
puffed sleeves and a very full skirt.
Her short veil and face veil fell
from a halo of forget-me-nots. She
wore long gloves of marching color.
The bride's bouquet was of white
pom pons and in the center forget-
me-nots, tied with white ribbon.
Miss Josephine Leo, the maid of
honor, wore a floor-length gown of
dusty pink taffeta with short puffed
sleeves and sweetheart neckline. The
skirt was very full and had shirred
inserts of the same material. She
wore a small doll hat matching her
gown and her bouquet was of pink
roses tied with pink ribbon. She
wore long mitts.
The bridesmaid. Miss Emily Better,
also wore a floorlength gown of
taffeta, rose color, with short puffed
sleeves and sweetheart neckline
and very full skirt. She wore a small

long mitts. Her bouquet was of
deep pink roses tied with rose rib-
bon.
Mr. Fred Gabriel was the best
man and the usher was Mr. Joseph
Augustino, brother of the groom.

was of roses and sweet peas.

from 4 to 11 which more than
200 relatives and other guests at-
tended. The bride received many
beautiful gifts.
The bride traveled in a black cos-

children. A native of Poland, Mrs. Ziblut has

Ransomville General Hospital.
A native of Poland, she had
lived In Niagara Falls for the
last 65 years. She was the widow
of John Ziblut and Is survived
by five Sons, five
daughters, 83 grandchildren and
45 great-grandchildren. .

Louis Zeiger died at hls home at
No. 645 Fourth street yesterday after-
noon at 2 o'clock after a lingering ill-
ness. Mr. Zeiger was born at LaSalle,
August 19. 1856. After spending hls
early boyhood days there he removed
to this city where he resided up to the'
time of his death. He was a member-
of the Niagara Frontier Lodge No.
132 , F. & A. M., and also a member.
of the Woodmen of the World. He
was a director of the Niagara Per-
manent Savings and Loan Association
since its founding having acted in the;
capacity of treasurer for a number of
years.
Besides his wife, Mr. Zeiger is surviv-
ed by one daughter. Marie, one.
brother, Frank, and three sisters, Mrs.
Adam Mattern, Mlss Elizabeth and
Miss Louisa all o f t h l s city. Mr. Zeig-
er's unmarried sisters arrived from
Germany this morning where they had
been visiting for several months. The
steamer on which they returned from
Europe was held outside Sandy Hook
for a day, or.they would have reached
home before he died.
The funeral will be held tomorrow
afternoon at 3 o'clock from the family
residence. No. 654 Fourth street.
The Masonic Fraternity will be In
charge of the services and all mem-
bers of the Niagara Frontier Lodge
are requested to meet At the Masonic :
Templo at 2:30 o'clock. Tho Rev.;

after Long Illness.

WOLCOTTSVILLE, Oct. 10—August
F. Whitkopp, 58 years old, husband
of Mrs. Pauline Sy Whitkopp,
died at his home at Wolcottsville
yesterday after a long Illness.
He leaves, besides his wife, three
sons and two daughters, Daniel,
Franklin and Wilmer and Mrs. Raymond
Kraatz and Mrs. Melvin Raduns;
six brothers and two sisters,
Julius. Albert, John, Rudolph, William
and Herman Whitkopp, and
Mrs. Minnie Veomet and Mrs. John
Handreick, all of Wolcottsville.
The funeral will be held Wednesday
at 2:30 o'clock at the home,
with interment at Royalton Mountain
Ridge cemetery. The Rev.
Herman Ewalt will officiate.

with a miniature bridal couple on

Sorrow came to the home of their
eldest son. Mr. Edgar P. Bowman,

Mrs. Bowman's father, Mr. J.
Snelllng, suddenly passed away.
But Mr. Bowman and daughter,
Miss Eva Bowman, and Mrs. Bowman's
son and wife. Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Coats, called for a brief
period at the dinner hour. Mrs.
Bowman and little daughters, Lily
and Beatrice, were not present.
Mr. and Mrs. Bowman were the
recipients of many lovely gifts-and
cards' of congratulations from their
family and friends, wishing them
many more happy returns of the

He was a member of the
Carpenters Union, AFL, Lockport
Aerie. No. 825. FOE, and the First!
Presbyterian church
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bessie
Volschow; a daughter, Mrs. Charles
Boots, of this city, three brothers
and seven sisters.
Services will be held Saturday at
2 p.m. at the Prudden funeral home.
Burial will be in Cold Springs cem-
