14255 | Niagara Gazette - 10/1953 A crown of traditional orange blossoms held the fingertip veil of lace edged illusion for Miss Ellen Mae Schildhauer as she was united in marriage to S.-M.-Gerald Joseph Kanouff last Saturday. The candlelight ceremony, in tWhich the daughter of Mr. and Mn. Walter Schildhauer, 91st St., was married to the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Kanouff, Pine Ave., took place at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. L. E. Herfurth officiating. Escorted to the altar by her father, the bride wore a gown of candlelight satin and lace with a fitted bodice fashioned with a satin bertha, coljar and long sleeves1 of lace. The circular skirt fanned out into' a cathedral-length train.' She carried a white Bible topped with an orchid and streamers tied with lilies-of-the-valley, Mrs. John Andrews, matron-ofbonor for her sister, wore a gown of Nile green satin and carried a bouquet of red roses and yellow and white pompons. On her hair was a circlet of green leaves with a short veil. The bridesmaids, Mrs. William Schildhauer and Miss Yvonne Kanouff, sister of the bridegroom, wore matching gowns of fuchsia satin, fashioned in lines similar to the bridal gown. They' wore headpieces of fuchsia leaves and carried colonial bouquets of yellow roses and white pompons. The bridegroom chose as his best man, S. M. Charles Hazen, with Mr. William Schildhauer, brother of the bride, and Mr. Marvin Smeal, nenhew of the bridegroom, acting as ushers. After the double ring ceremony, a reception was held in the church hall. The mother of the bride wore a dress of peacock, blue crepe with black accessories. The bridegroom's mother chose a powder blue dress with black accessories. Each mother completed her ensemble with a corsage of yellow pompons. For their wedding trip to Clearfield, Pa., the bride departed in an aqua wool jersey dress with leopard accessories and wore an orchid corsage. The sleeves were short and shirred with puffed effect. Her turban and accessories were of matching shade, and her corsage was of gardenias and baby's breath. Mrs. Yensan was-well-known to residents of the community, as representative of the Goodwill Industries, a service she carried on for nearly 10 years, in spite of an illness which confined her to a wheel chair. Born in Fleetwood, England, February 27, 1883, the former Frances Moir was brought to Toronto, Ont., with her five brothers and. sisters, while a very young child. She recently told friends her only recollection of the voyage was a gust of wind which blew her 'tammy-shanter' into the ocean. She received her early education in Toronto, finishing her schooling in Buffalo. Shortly after her marriage to Alfred Yensan in The Good Shepherd Church, Buffalo, the couple moved" to the Yensan homestead, latter occupying their present dwelling, where their golden wedding anniversary was celebrated this year. She was a charter member of the Grand Island Home Bureau unit, and was actively engaged in Trinity EUB Church organizations Parent-Teacher Assn., and displayed a keen Interest in"belter education for children. Raised in the Episcopal faith, she was deeply interested In the establishment of the St, Martin in the Fields Mission, being one of its early supporters. Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Robert of North Tonawanda and David of White. Haven Rd., two daughters, Mrs. Joseph Hewett, Kenmore, and Frances, who lives at the Grand Island home, and 17. grandchildren. Burial arrangements have not been completed. 14273 | Niagara Gazette - 10/2/1963 William Crewe, a former city policeman, died Tuesday (Oct. 1, 1963) in T i c e ,Fla., where he had lived since 1951. He was 74. Mr, Crewe joined the police force in 1919 and retired in 1944 after contracting polio. During many of his years on the force he worked a beat around the New York Central Depot in Falls Street. He also drove a patrol wagon for several years. Former Police Supt. Martin T. Considine called him the "neatest man on the force." He said that Mr. Crewe was "well liked by everyone he worked with." Several members of current police force remember him and held him in high regard. Mr. Crewe left the city in 1951 for Tice, which is a sub- urb of Fort Myers, Fla. He had been in a wheelchair since his polio attack. In Niagara Falls he was a member of Epiphany Epis- copal Church and of Masonic Lodge No. 132 F&AM. surviving are his wife, Mrs. Anna Crewe; a daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Walker, of this city; a brother, Rudolph Crewe, of Model City; a sister, Mrs. Otto (Matilda) Koller, of Ran- somville; and four children. 14277 | Niagara Gazette - 10/20/1905 THOMAS M. BARBER. in the death of Thomas M. Barber, who was buried from his late home In Sanborn Sunday afternoon, Niagara County lost one of the oldest, if not the oldest, of her pioneer citizens. It was In 1824. 81 years ago, that the elder Barbers made the journey from Connecticut' with ox teams and covered wagons. James Barber, at that time 7 years of age, was detailed to drive a large part of the distance, one of the slow-going teams of oxen, trudging along for hundreds of miles beside the patient beasts. The family took up land near what is now the Tuscarora Indian reservation-, a short distance west of Sanborn. There they endured all the hardships that belonged to the pioneers era. and young Barber grew up inured to toil. In 1837, during what was known as the Mackenzie Rebellion in Canada, Thomas Barber served in the American militia which guarded the border to prevent the rebelling forces from getting a foothold in this country. For services rendered at that time he received a government grant of several hundred, acres in Iowa, upon which a son, Edgar, now lives. In the spring of 50, when the gold fever swept the country. Mr. Barber went with the flood of fortune hunters' to the coast. He returned a few years later and again took up his work a t Sanborn, where-he owned several farms. Mr. and Mrs. Barber recently cele- brated their diamond wedding. the deceased passed away suddenly after a brief illness of but a week. Besides Mrs. Barber, four sons survive. Mr. Staley, who had been ill for a week, was taken to Deaconess Hospital, Buffalo, this morning where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Mr. Staley was born in Buffalo Oct. 26, 1887. He was the son of Jefferson and Mary Staley, a pioneer Grand Island family. He and his wife, the former Martha Gagemske, whom he married in 1908, moved to Grand Island in 1937. . Besides his wife he is survived by seven daughters and two tons. His daughters are Mrs. Marion Rarich, Cheektowaga; Mrs. Mildred Ehrhardt, East Aurora; Mrs. Leona Brackett, Houston, Tex.; Mrs. Eileen Schapel, Niagara Falls; Mrs. Virginia Hall, Buffalo; Mrs. Helen Yensan, Kenmore, and Mrs. Sally Anne Dworak, Grand Island. The sons are John, Staley, Guelph, Ont., and Robert W. Staley, serving with the U. S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier Philippine Sea.
