1454 | Obituary David T. Kuczkowski, age 54, of Tonawanda, suddenly on October 16th. David had a love for cars, specifically muscle cars and Jeep Wranglers. He was also a World War II enthusiast. Above all this, David cherished his children. He was a caring, devoted father who loved his children more than life itself. He was very intelligent, a hard worker, and always the first to help anyone who may need it. David was predeceased by his mother, Sallie Kuczkowski, and his sister Ann Kuczkowski. He leaves behind his loving father Tom Kuczkowski whom he helped to care for over many years. She was born in Lockport, NY, on June 3, 1951, a daughter of the late Milt and Mildred [O'Laughlin] Bradshaw. Denise was a graduate of Newfane High School. She became a Residential Supervisor at Rivershore, Inc., where she had worked for 25 years before retiring in 2020, as Administration Supervisor at People Inc. She loved her career and made a huge impact on hundreds of people and countless life long friends. She loved taking care and spending time with her family. She was very close to her children and adored her grandchildren. She was an avid reader, often seen reading two or three books at the same time. She loved gardening and even had lived on and worked a farm with her late husband. Denise was a free spirit that was loved by so many and touched us all, in her own special way. She will be missed tremendously. Desiree was born in Cass Lake, MN, a daughter of Thomas and Lori [Jonathan] Norton. She resided her entire life on the Tuscarora Nation. Desiree graduated from Niagara Wheatfield Senior High School and attended the State University of New York at Buffalo, majoring in nutrition. She was employed over the years with various employers in the Niagara County area. She was a lifelong member of the Tuscarora Baptist Church and was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. Like her mother Lori, Desiree loved to sing and had sang in Christmas programs and funerals. Desiree had a sweet, bubbly personality, and a lovely smile. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh, people loved her for these traits. She enjoyed talking with people and socializing with friends and family. Desiree especially loved spending time with her immediate and extended family, especially with her sisters, children and granddaughters. Those interactions were most important to her and the light of her life. She loved to travel, attend local fairs and events, loved watching movies, and she was an avid reader of books. She was very intelligent and had a lot of passion. She also loved animals, especially her Chihuahua Sosa. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband Jesse Printup, her children Meadow and River, two grand daughters Malia and Loreya, two sisters Lindsey (Timothy) Corp and Nicole (Daniel) Dixon, a niece Halia, nephews Jaren and Ashton, also several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Donald could best be described as a gentle, kind, and compassionate man. He proudly joined the United States Army, where he served in the Korean War. He later became an active member of the Korean War Veterans Association in Cape Coral, Florida. He spoke of these friends often. Donald had a strong faith, and lived an exemplary life. He loved nature and was often found enjoying his yard, planting, weeding, and working in the garden with his wife. He loved to tinker in the shed; fixing things and working on various projects always busy and improving something in and around his home. Mr. Tubo served in the US NAVY. He was employed as Superintendent of Manufacturing at the Delavan GM Plant. He was an avid fisherman and a great bowler. He bowled five 300 games in his career. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Phebe D. 1462 | OBITUARY Donald F. Calkins, Jr. of Sanborn, NY, passed away Thursday, December 10, 2020. He was born in Sanborn, NY, on October 26, 1923, the son of the late Donald F. and Frances [Hudson] Calkins, Sr. Don served with the US Navy during World War II. After returning from the service, he attended Niagara University and graduated with a degree in business administration in 1950. Don joined the family business D.F. Calkins Lumber Company after graduation. He was later recalled in to the Navy for the Korean War, after his discharge, he rejoined the Lumber Company and in 1964, became President of the company. Don served on the school board of Lewiston School District #8 until it was formed into Niagara Wheatfield Central School. He was a member of the Sanborn fire company for over 50 years, the Sanborn American Legion Post #969 and the Niagara Falls Elks Lodge #346 and served several terms with the North Eastern Lumberman’s Association, including the New York State Advisory Committee. He was active in the First Baptist Church of Sanborn and Lewiston. Don was the husband of the late Ann C. [Gerity] Calkins, who passed away in December of 2020. He is survived by his four children Donna Calkins of Hawaii, Paul (Eileen) Calkins of Sanborn, NY, Barbara Roberts of North Carolina and Mark (Barbara) Calkins of Stuyvesant Falls, NY, also four granddaughters, two great grandsons, a great granddaughter, also several nieces and nephews. She was part of a singing group, Sweet Adeline's, for many years. She was a talented interior decorator and had an eye for design. Donna had lots of friends and was always smiling. She had a way of always finding the good in everything and everyone. Her compassion and friendly demeanor was exemplary. She was an impeccable housekeeper and had a place for everything and everything was in it's place. Above all else, Donna loved her family and enjoyed every moment spent with them. She was a devoted wife to her loving husband, Victor Lemieux. She liked to refer to him as her "Go-Go", as he is always on the go. 1467 | Obituary Eleanor B. Whipple passed away on Sunday, October 10, 2021 at Supportive Care of Orleans at the age of 97. Born on December 10, 1923 in Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Bernard Holbrook Bailey and Beatrice Eleanor Phinney. Eleanor’s education began at Islington Grammar School from 1929 to 1939, then she attended Dedham High School MA and from 1937 to 1941 she attended college at Oberlin in Ohio. She married the late Robert Whipple and together they raised four children. She continued her education at SUNY of Brockport and in 1963 she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. Eleanor then went on to teach 5th grade at Lyndonville Elementary for a number of years. Eleanor was a lifelong member of the Lyndonville United Methodist and at one time was a Sunday School Teacher. Eleanor took pride in her community by volunteering as a Twig at the Medina Memorial Hospital for many years and also was a member of the board at Hospice, serving as Secretary and was on the board of the Lyndonville Area Foundation. She also volunteered on the ARC Endowment Committee. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, reading, bowling, and crafting quilts and wall hangings. She was an avid walker and could be seen walking around Lyndonville on almost a daily basis. Eleanor is survived by her four children, Marsha Nitzoche, John (Brenda) Whipple, Julia Watts Bacon, and Laura (John) Belson. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Besides her parents and husband, she is predeceased by her siblings, Bernard H. Bailey Jr. and Katherine Johnson and her dear friend, Frank Housel. There are no calling hours. Mrs. Harvey enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking and bird watching. She is survived by her husband of 63 years Floyd C. Harvey, they were married on October 4, 1958, her children Floyd C. She was born in Niagara Falls, NY, on October 25, 1934, a daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth [McCormack] Berthot. Mrs. Ball graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1952 and became a Business Office Representative with New York Telephone for over 35 years before retiring in 1992. She was a devoted catholic who volunteered her time at the Fatima Shrine and was very generous with her time and donations. Mrs. Ball loved spending time with her grandsons and singing with her sisters. She enjoyed cooking, baking and polishing her copper and silver. She was an avid reader and will be remembered for her famous Thanksgiving pies. Mrs. Ball was the wife of the late Robert A. Ball, who passed away in January of 2018. She is survived by her son Tim (Jackie) Ball, two grandsons Cullen and Ryan Ball, three sisters Doreen (late Mike) Michailof, Gail (Jim) Hastings and Rita (Paul) Martin, also many nieces and nephews. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY, on June 21, 1937, a son of the late John V. and Gertrude [Winn] Harvey. Mr. Harvey attended local schools and served with the US Army during the Korean War. He was employed at Moore Business Forms as the head of shipping and receiving, before retiring in 1999. He was a member of the Pekin Fire Company, since 1964. Mr. Harvey was an avid hunter and spent much time attending local sporting raffles, in addition to spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed tending to his gardens and local wildlife. Mr. Harvey was the husband of 63 years to the late Elizabeth A. "Betty" [Lewin] Harvey, who passed away on December 28, 2021, they were married on October 4, 1958. He is survived by his children Floyd C. (Patricia) Harvey, Rebecca G. (Andy) Clinton, Laurita M. Mr. Zahradnik was one of the founding members and President of the Niagara Wheatfield Athletic Association, where he was also the head coach of the Wildcats, which was the first team to win a championship for the Association. He loved spending time at his son's ranch in Texas, was a competitive skeet shooter and an avid Bills, Yankee and Notre Dame fan. After their marriage, she began to attend the Catholic church with her husband and family. Gloria was active in her children’s lives, helping with girl scouts, being a room mother at their school, and getting involved with Twin-Ton-Ettes. She and Harold were active at Delaware Hose Firehall, where Gloria was a member of the Auxiliary. They joined the Lions Club and became a lifetime member and spent time as a member of the Eagles Club as well. Harold and Gloria enjoyed square dancing and helping at Saint Francis Church and Mission, and even helped other churches get their missions started. She worked at Murphy’s and AM&A’s. She sold Tupperware and worked at a daycare from the late 1980’s, until her retirement in 1997. She enjoyed working the voting booths when she was able and belonged to a Card Club. She kept busy but always had time for her family, which she cherished more than anything. 1489 | OBITUARY Grace Bishara Aswad of Grand Island, NY, passed away on Sunday April 17, 2022, at her home under the care of her family and Hospice Buffalo. Grace was born on Friday, April 13, 1934 in Niagara Falls, NY to the late Bishara and Najla [Haick] Bishara. She was the eldest of five children and loved caring for her younger siblings and enjoyed working in her parents’ store on Ontario Avenue in Niagara Falls. In 1955, Grace graduated from Niagara Falls High School and gained employment at National Carbon as an administrative secretary. On February 10, 1957, Grace married the love of her life, the late Very Reverend Fr. George (Richard) Aswad, he passed away in January of 2014. Together, they bought a plot of land and built their first home on Sandy Beach Rd. on Grand Island. Over the years, Grace and Richard built two other homes on Grand Island, where they raised their family of five daughters, 10 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren . Grace was a faithful and devout Orthodox Christian. She was an integral member of St. George Orthodox Church in Niagara Falls where her husband served as the priest for 35 years. Grace was known as “Khourieh,” a title reserved for a priest’s wife, and cared deeply for her parish community. Grace was the choir director at St. George for 60 years, taught Sunday School, and directed several children’s musical programs. Children brought Grace endless joy and she loved sharing her musical talents with them. Grace was instrumental in the development of the Sacred Music Institute for the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of North America and was the choir director for the Archdiocese Convention choirs. She was the recipient of the Antiochian Gold Medal of Merit. She was crowned Queen of Midwest SOYO and was an officer and member of the Antiochian Women of North America. Grace had a beautiful voice and was a professional singer within her community. she sang for the troops and participated in local musical theater productions. She loved to perform and her performance of “Oh Holy Night” on Christmas Eve was a beloved tradition at St. George Church. Grace was also a three-time cancer survivor and an active participant in the Grand Island Relay for Life. She performed at the Relay for Life several times and was chosen as the Honorary Survivor in 2016. Grace loved her family and friends dearly and found the most joy in being surrounded by and serving those she loved. Her love knew no limits. She embodied joy and brought happiness and a smile to all who knew or met her. Grace is survived by her five daughters, Lynn (George) Wood, Laura (Jeff) Colyer, Louise (William) Snyder, Lisa (Michael) Dudley, and Lana Dudley, ten blessed grandchildren Jessica (Tracy), Jeana, Matthew, Andrew, Ryan (of blessed memory), Rachel, Kara, Eric, Amber, and Alyssa, two great grandchildren, Andrew and Jeffrey, a sister Judy (late Jack) Manoukian, a brother Kamil (Carol) Bishara, also many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late William (late Diane) and Joseph Bishara. 1492 | Obituary Helen C. Knox Of Sanborn, NY, passed away on Friday, August 4, 2023, in the Beechwood Continuing Care, Getzville, NY. She was born March 5, 1926, on the family farm to Michael and Julia [Ivezic] Cindrich. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Helen had a wonderful sense of humor and capricious nature. She was tenacious and had a creative, competitive spirit that showed in her love of sports, particularly golf, and as a visual artist. Along with her parents, she and the other siblings helped with the farm work. She often said she was doing “boy’s work”, especially during WW2 while her brothers were in the service. She loved to ride horses. Helen attended LaSalle High School in Niagara Falls but dropped out to take a job at Carborundum in the Product Planning, Bonded Products and Grain Division. During this time, she played softball with the company team. While raising her family, Helen volunteered for community activities and was a member of the American Legion, the Niagara Wheatfield High School Band Boosters and chaperoned for band events and trips. Helen also served as a substitute teacher at Niagara Wheatfield High School for many years. A very gifted athlete, she was an active member of the Hyde Park Golf Club in Niagara Falls, where she competed in tournaments and repeatedly won the Club Championships in the 9 Hole category. She also won tournaments at Niagara Falls Country Club, Niagara Frontier Country Club and Lockport Country Club. She qualified for the nationals in a tournament in Cortland, NY. She represented New York State in the National Senior Games in St. Louis in 1987 and the Empire State Senior Games in 1998. Helen played golf until she was 89! Helen returned to school as an adult learner and attended Niagara County Community College where she completed her GED and continued to study the visual arts and earned her Associate Degree in Science, Fine Arts. She pursued her passion for painting, showing her art at many art shows and festivals. She specialized in oils, pastels and collages with works that ranged from representational to abstract. Helen won awards at the Kenan Center, Lewiston Art Show, Niagara Society of Artists, Youngstown International Art show, the Bestor Art Show at the Chautauqua Institution and at Marine Midland Bank, Western. Mrs. Knox was a member of the Kenmore Art Society, the Niagara Society of Artists, and she volunteered with the blind and handicap art program at the Albright Knox Art Museum. Along with her husband John, she loved to golf, camp, travel and square dance. Together, they were participants in the Senior Olympics, winning medals in shuffleboard. Helen was the wife of 69 years to the late John B. Knox, Jr., who passed away in 2018. She is survived by her children John B. (Deborah) Knox, III, Kevin (Suzanne) Knox, Cheryl Knox (William Jaback) and Sharon (Sean) Deuby, three grandchildren Jessica (Craig) Axford, Jennifer Knox and Connor Deuby, a great-granddaughter Eliana Axford, one sister Mildred (late John) Dooley, also many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Mary (Bob) Schimschack, Rose (Stanley) Lederhouse, Kitty (Edwin) Behnke, Anna Mittelstaedt, Frances (Larry) Broeker, John (Eloise) and Martin (Leonore) Cindrich. Helen had an enduring and contagious zest for life. She loved her family and adored the community where she lived her entire life. Her wit and humor will be missed. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY, on December 9, 1931, the son of the late Herbert C. and Alice [Levec] Wendt, Sr. Mr. Wendt graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1951. He was employed at Chisholm Ryder for 35 years and later at Niagara University for over 5 years before retiring. Mr. Wendt loved spending time with his family and enjoyed being a weather enthusiast, gardening, pistachio nuts, chocolate covered cherries, jelly beans, Chinese food and singing silly songs to his grand and great grandchildren. He was active in the Boy Scouts and an avid Bills and Ohio State Football fan. Mr. Wendt is survived by his wife of 68 years Ellen T. She earned her bachelor’s from Niagara University and her law degree from the Franklin Pierce Law Center in New Hampshire. After law school, she worked at the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo, NY and the Legal Aid Society of Rockland County, NY. She then became the Hearing Examiner and later a Magistrate, in the State of New York Family Court of Rockland County. Cathy received numerous awards for her leadership and contributions to the legal profession. She was a member of the New York State Bar Association and the New York State Women’s Bar Association, as well as Past President of the Rockland County Bar Association and the Rockland County Women’s Bar Association. She was the wife of the late Raymond T. O’Connell, who passed away on December 22, 2008. Cathy was the mother of Raymond M. O’Connell, sister of Sister Teresa Miklitsch, OSF, Mary Fran (Donna Pavetti) Miklitsch, Rosemary (Jim) Rapino, Robert and David and was the aunt of Audrey Miklitsch, Cai and ZhenHua Pavetti.
