He was born in North Tonawanda, NY, on February 8, 1934, a the son of the late George and Carrie (Miller) Maerten. Mr. Maerten served with the US Army. In 1959, he started working with his brother Donald at Maerten's Motor Service and continued operating the business until his death. Mr. Maerten was actively involved in the Shawnee Fire Company, serving as fire chief seven times, along with other offices in the company. He was a member of the Niagara County Tractor Pullers, the Niagara County Fire Advisor Board, the Niagara County Fire Chief Association and was an active member of the several firematic associations in the area. He enjoyed spending time with his family and taking care of his vegetable garden. Mr. Maerten is survived by his wife of 66 years Ann H. [Moje] Maerten, two sons James (Sue) and Thomas Maerten, two grandchildren Kevin and Andrew (Alexis) Maerten and a great-granddaughter Aubrey Maerten , also many nieces and nephews. 1454 | Obituary Our beloved Rose Lillian (Swendsen) Ness Race passed away on October 31, 2023, at the very young age of 98. Rose was born on May 19, 1925, to parents Ray and Viola (Skinner) Swendsen in Narrowsburg, NY. On September 14, 1941, Rose married Harry Charles Ness. Rose and Harry went on to have two children, Joyce (Victor) Scherer and Ronald (Majorie) Ness. Harry succumbed to Multiple Sclerosis in August 1956. Rose went on to marry John Harlan Race in March 1961 and on that day Karen (Race) Pelkey joined the family. John Harlan Race passed from an aortic aneurysm in 2001. Marilyn Corelli and Stanley Kuta, the children of her sister Harriet (Swendsen) Kuta, are considered her immediate family. Rose enjoyed gardening, canning, and taking photos but most of all her family was her biggest pride and joy. Rose is predeceased by her beloved siblings. Harriet (Swendsen) Kuta, Clifford Swendsen, Alfred Swendsen, Dorothy (Swendsen) Moreland, Clara Swendsen, Robert Swendsen, Melvin Swendsen, Vera Swendsen and an unnamed child. She is survived by the following siblings Lester Swendsen, Arlene (Swendsen) Heisner, Joan (Swendsen) Felvus, Adelaide (Swendsen) Butler and many nieces and nephews. 1458 | Obituary Peter K. Kuczkowski, age 87, of Tonawanda, passed away on December 5, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Peter was born on April 14, 1935, in Tonawanda, NY to Peter E. and Helen Kuczkowski. He was a 1952 graduate of Tonawanda High School. Peter enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1957 and proudly served in the United States Navy Seabees Construction Battalion. He retired from the Navy in 1995, after 20 years of service. Peter worked as a welder fabricator and eventually took over the family business, Octo Manufacturing, in Tonawanda. He has had a hand in many local construction projects over the years. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Union. Peter loved his family very much and had a soft spot for his grandchildren. He enjoyed every moment he spent with them. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY, on September 11, 1928, the son of the late Thomas and Mildred [Panton] Ward. Bob graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1947 where he played on the school's football and basketball teams. He also studied Instrumentation and graduated from Erie County Tech Vocational School. He served with the US Army signal core during the Korean War. After returning from the service, he was employed at Kimberly Clark for 27 years as a Head Tradesman in the Instrumentation department and later became the Senior Technical Engineer with Linde Air Union Carbide for 19 years before retiring in 1992. While employed with Linde Air, he traveled throughout the US as a Senior Technical Project Engineer and oversaw projects to completion. He was a member of the Elk Club, the LaSalle Sportsman Club, a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus #247 and the Franklinville Conservation Club. Over the years, Bob enjoyed spending time with his family & friends in addition to golfing, bowling, outdoors, camping and boating. He also was a dedicated sports fan and very loyal to the Buffalo Bills and Nascar racing. He enjoyed 30 plus years with his wife Audrey in New York's Southern tier at Emerald Acres Camp grounds as a seasonal camper. He and Audrey were also snowbirds and spent the past 25 plus years at their winter vacation home in New Smyrna Beach FL. He was the beloved husband of the late Audrey M. [Rager] Ward, who passed away in March of 2013. He served his country with great pride in the U.S. Army Company M 511th Airborne Infantry Regiment during the Korean War. He then served in the National Guard for three years. He was a member of the American Legion, LaSalle Post 1142. He was employed by several area companies. After 25 years, he retired in 1998 from J.P. Metal and Fabrication formerly A.R. Brady as a Foreman and Welder. Roger always believed in working hard and supporting his family. He was an early riser who was always active. He enjoyed going to the gym daily and walking in the gorge in his younger years. Roger enjoyed having a drink with friends, talking about sports. He loved spending Sundays with his dear grandchildren and morning coffees at the Sunshine Café with his friend, Lisa Routhier. He is survived by his daughter, Lorraine A. A native of Niagara Falls, NY, he was the husband of Maria Kubik Lauzau, who survives and the son of Wilbur Lauzau and Winifred May Burridge Lauzau, both deceased. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army. He retired from Goodyear with 26 years of service as Chief Chemist and went on to work at Lawrence Industries with 20 years of service He was also a licensed real estate agent for several years. Ronald loved working with his hands by helping people with building projects and enjoyed working in his yard especially with his flowers. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Ronald was friendly to all and never met a stranger. 1476 | OBITUARY Ruth Anna Marie Smith passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 at Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence as a result of the Covid 19 Virus. Born in Niagara Falls, NY on February 25, 1925, she was the daughter of the late William H. and Clara P. (Becker) Loos. Following her graduation from Niagara Falls High School, Ruth worked all her life as a secretary including 24 years at the YMCA of Niagara. During this time, she also cared for her elderly father. Ruth and her family were founding members of the Calvary Lutheran Evangelical Church where for many years she sang in the church choir. Ruth was also a member of the Niagara Squadronettes and enjoyed bowling on their team. As a lifelong Democrat, Ruth looked forward each election season to working as an Election Inspector and assisted with many local campaigns. Known to have a green thumb, Ruth had a passion for gardening and was an active Garden Club member. During the winter months, Ruth enjoyed knitting. Generations of family members and friends continue to snuggle underneath her warm and cozy blankets on frigid nights and pull out her special Christmas stockings each holiday season. A hardcore Sabres fan, she rarely missed a game. Ruth loved to bake and was probably best known for her chocolate chip and multi varieties of Christmas cookies. For many though, she will be remembered for her gentle, thoughtful and kind manner. Ruth is survived by her daughter Pamela (Annemarie), son Craig (Kim), grandchildren Melanie (Daniel), Jeremy (Amy), Christopher (Jennifer) and Justin (Kelsey), great-grandchildren Eli, Lisette, Analise, Madelin and Chloe as well as her beloved niece Deborah Scheu, nephews William and Richard Loos and many close Canadian cousins including Bette Cronmiller and Rebecca Chan. 1491 | Obituary Sister Colette Rhoney, OSF was born in Niagara Falls, NY June 22, 1931 and died March 6, 2023 at the Stella Niagara Health Center, Stella Niagara, New York. She was the daughter of the late D. Vincent and Gertrude [Braas] Rhoney. Sister Colette entered the Sisters of St. Francis September 4, 1949 and was professed August 18, 1952. She received her BS in Education from Rosary Hill College (now Daemen) in 1958 and an MED from Niagara University in 1970. Sister Colette's ministries included Education, Spiritual Direction and the Assisi Retreat Experience in Italy. She taught school in Buffalo, New York at St. Benedict, Buffalo (1952-55), St. Ann (1955-57), St. Lawrence (1965-67); in Columbus, Ohio at Holy Rosary (1957-60); in New Monmouth, NJ at St. Mary School (1967-70) and in Rome, Italy at St.Francis International School (1960-65). She served as a Retreat Facilitator at the Stella Niagara Center of Renewal (1975-78); Associate Vicar for Religious for the Diocese of Buffalo (1980-88); Third Age Program Director for Holy Name Province (1988-91); was Spiritual Director at the Buffalo Diocesan Counseling Center (1991-96) and with the Sisters of St. Joseph, Hamburg (1996-2001). Also, Sister Colette served as the Interprovincial Novitiate Team Director in Redwood City, CA (1970-71). She became the Holy Name Province Novice Director from 1971-74 and remained in charge of formation until 1975. Sister Colette then continued her ministry as Spiritual Director until 2017 when she moved to the Stella Niagara Health Center. Besides her parents, Sister Colette was predeceased by brothers, James V. (Angeline) , Paul J. and Vincent (Carol) and Michael D. Rhoney. She is survived by her sister, Mary Alice (William) Wonsiewski, her beloved sister-in-laws Cynthia Rhoney and Patricia Rhoney and many nieces and nephews, and her Sisters in the Stella Niagara Community. Susan loved raising her dogs, Fred, Mandy, Precious, Punkin, Snowball and Patches and also enjoyed dancing. Susan is survived by her husband of 52 years Donald D. She was a Registered Nurse and started her career at Fort Niagara, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, DeVeaux Manor, Mt. St. Mary's Hospital and with Summit Pediatrics for over 30 years, before retiring in 2007. Susanne was a member of the St. Teresa's Mothers Club, Madonna and Duffy Mothers Club, St. Bernard's Altar and Rosary Society, the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and a founder of the West Point Parents Association in 1975. She dedicated her life to her children and family, focusing on her patients and those in the community. Susanne was the wife of the late Joseph L. LeGasse, Sr., who passed away on May 30, 2016. She was the mother of Joseph, Jr., Francis (Lynne), Anne (Frank Rotundo), James, Patricia, Eileen LeGasse and Colleen (Michael) Palmeri, sister of Robert (Charlotte), John (Marilyn), Michael (Bruce Fitting) Greene, Kathleen (late Henry) Florence, Mary Agnes (Robert) Justiana and Cecelia ( late Edward) Evert, also survived by fourteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, also many nieces and nephews. 1498 | Obituary Theodore Richard Nelson was born on August 30, 2019 at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. “Teddy” was born with a rare congenital heart defect and courageously battled this disease for over 7 months. On April 9, 2020, Theodore entered into eternal life and now rests in the arms of Jesus. Theodore is the cherished son of Alexandria and Michael Nelson, and the adored brother to his big sister, MacKenna. During his time in the hospital, Teddy most enjoyed listening to his sister sing lullabies, reading his favorite puppy book, and being held by his family. He was a chemist with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation for 20 years before retiring in 2003. Tom had lived in Barker for 40 years and enjoyed boating, organic gardening, tending to his horses and pets before moving to Lewiston. He was a staunch Democrat, environmentalist and humanist with no patience for the current political regime. Tom is survived by his wife and partner of 53 years, Judith Keys and many friends.
