14551 | Niagara Gazette - 10/8/1937 Dowling - Sullivan One of the season's loveliest weddings was solemnized with a nuptial high mass at 10 o'clock Saturday morning, October 2, at Sacred Heart church, when Miss Helen E. Sullivan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John G. Sullivan, af 2101 North avenue,was united in marriage to James P. Dowling, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Dowling, of 162 Sixtyninth street. The Rev. Francis E. Crowley officiated The altar was beautifully decorated with gladioli and ferns. During the offertory Miss Josephine Fell sang the "Ava Maria." To the strains of Lohengrin's Wedding March, the bride entered the "church on the arm of her father. She was lovely in a gown of white brocaded cut velvet, fashioned on princess lines, with a short train. Long tight-fitting sleeves ended In points over the wrist. Tiny covered velvet buttons extended from the neckline to the waist Dainty seed pearl clips adorned the neckline of the dress. Her beautifully designed full length veil of Illusion was tulle, with a deep scalloped border of alencon lace which fell rrom a tiny cap with a tiara of fine seed pearls made coronet style. She carried a bridal bouquet of white bride's rosea and, blue for-get-me-nots, tied with a white satin bow. Miss Ruth Sullivan, sister of the bride and maid of honor, was gowned in aquamarine secretta taffeta made on princess lines with graceful ruffled puff sleeves and border. She wore an off-the-face pleated tulle halo, with circular face veil and lace mitts, and carried a bouquet of pink roses and baby's breath tied with a silver bow. The bridesmaids wore floor-length Colonial style taffeta gowns. Miss Helen Argy wearing bridal blue; Miss Mary Beck, peach; Miss Loretta Bland, peacock blue, and Miss Rose Dowling, coral. All wore matching tiaras of velvet flowers for headdress and lace mitts. They carried Colonial bouquets of talisman roses and bronze chrysanthemums. Little Miss Margaret Hughes, of Buffalo, cousin of the groom, was flower girl and she wore a Colonial floor-length gown of pink net over taffeta, with tiny colonial hat of blue taffeta, tied with a band under the chin. Long pink lace mitts and white kid slippers completed her charming costume. She carried a tiny Colonial bouquet of roses and mums. Leonard Dowling, brother of the groom, was best man and the ushers were John Dowling, Jr. brother of the groom; Roy Goodson, Joseph Long and Leo Creighton. The bride's mother chose a gown of black alpaca crepe trimmed in white with matching accessories, and her corsage was of yellow roses and mums. The groom's mother wore royal blue velvet with matching accessories and her corsage was of talisman roses and mums. Immediately following the ceremony, a wedding breakfast was served in the dining room of the Samovar restaurant for the members of the bridal party and immediate families. The bride's table, seating 20, was beautifully decorated with Ivory candles in crystal holders and bouquets of roses and lilies-of-the-valley. A reception was held at the home of the bride for relatives and friends when 150 guests were present. The bride's table was laid with Italian lace filet cloth and centered with a four-tier wedding cake, flanked by ivory tapers in sliver holders. The house was gaily decorated with varicolored gladioli and ferns. The bride's gifts to her attendants were vanity cases. . Mr. and Mrs. Dowling left on a motor trip to New York City and Washington, the bride traveling in a three-piece » mahogany brown wool suit with racoon fur collar. Holladay. director of research of the Carbide and Carbon laboratories, died this noon in Mount St. Mary's hospital of complications following a long Illness. Mrs. Holladay. daughter of the late George and Ida Barker, early residents of Niagara Falls, was born in this city. She attended school at the Loretto Academy and the Niagara Falls high school and was prominent in social circles here. In 1913 she married James A. Holladay of Charlottesville, Virginia, and this city. In 1921 they moved to Douglas Manor, Long Island, where they made their home during the next few years. In 1934 they returned to Niagara Falls, making their residence first at Lewiston Heights, later In the Jefferson apartments. Mrs. Holladay was a member of the Tatler club. Besides her husband. Mrs. Holladay is survived by three sisters and two brothers. Mrs. Samuel J. Devlin of this city, Mrs. Arthur Viertel of Poughkeepsie, New York, and Mrs. H. A. Cozzens of Fort Erie, Ont-, and George Barker of Poughkeepsie and Raymond C. Barker of Baden. North Carolina. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock at St. Peter's Episcopal church, Jefferson avenue and Second street. The Rev. 14561 | Niagara Gazette - 10/9/1922 Olean, Oct. 9.-Mrs. Gertrude Blinn Carleton of Buffalo was murdered by her lover. Anthony Barone of Buffalo, here yesterday afternoon. Barone then turned the revolver upon himself and committed suicide. The couple had been living together at No. 447 Prospect avenue, Buffalo, and came here at 4 o'clock this morning by automobile with several other persons. They called at the home of t h e girl's mother, Mrs. May Blinn, at No. 312 1/2 Whitney avenue. The shooting occurred when Mrs. Carleton, who is t w e n t y years old, refused to return' to Buffalo with Barone. After pleading with her for some time, Barone drew out a 35 calibre revolver and shot her through the head in the presence of her mother and a young brother and sister. He then turned the weapon on himself and put a bullet in h i s temple, dying instantly. Edward Grabau, pastor of that church, read the marriage lines which joined in the holy bonds of matrimony, Miss Florence Walck. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Walck. of Walmore, to Mr. Arnold Stoelting, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Stoelting, of the Sy road., this village. At the appointed hour the bridal party entered the church which was artistically decorated with ferns and flowers of the season and was filled with friends and relatives of the young people. The bride looked lovely in a gown of white bridal satin, her veil of silk tulle and lace was cap shape and was caught with orange blossoms on either side: her shower bouquet was of sweetheart roses and smilax, tied with white satin ribbon and silk tulle. The bridesmaids. Miss Evelyn Jagow, who wore at gown of peach color crepe, and Miss Lcrena Stoelting, who wore a gown of orchid crepe, both cousins of the groom, and Miss Frances Haseley and Miss Marion Haseley, who wore green and yellow chiffon gowns, both cousins of the bride, looked very charming, they wore hose and slippers to match their gowns and carried shower, bouquets tied with streamers. Miss Lydia Walck, maid of honor and sister of the bride, looked radiant in a handsome gown of blue screpe and carried a shower bouquet tied with silk tulle and wore hose and slippers to match. Herbert Stoelting, a brother of the groom, acted as best man, while Theodor Stoelting,- brother of the groom, and Edwin Mueller, brother-in-law of the groom, acted as ushers. Immediately after the ceremony a reception was held at-the home of the bride to about 65 guests. The bride's table was centered with two large tiered wedding cakes and white and pink roses. The bride and groom left on a trip to Detroit, Michigan, and other points and Will spend some time with the bride's parents upon their return. They received many lovely gifts. Russ, 25 years old. who lived on Ontario avenue near Thirteenth Street, and who was one of the delegates to the American Federation of Labor Convention which is being held in Toronto, was found dead in his room. No. 22 Shuter street, Toronto about seven o'clock last night. the gas was partly turned on and the man had died of asphyxiation. Letters and cards for his wife and children were found on a table in the toom. Russ was a delegate from the local branch of the Typographical Union and had arrived in Toronto Monday. He entered his boarding house thre aboout 11 o'clock that night and according to a letter he wrote to his wife he appar- ently retired about midnight. He must have turned tho gas on after he had shut it off. The people in the house did not see him around yesterday forenoon and tried the door, but found it locked and did not bother a n y more about It, thinking he had overslept. Last night, however, about sefen o'clock, they went up to his room, and, finding that the key was In the lock on the inside, broke the door in. Dr. Dixon, who lives in the house, was called, but found that '.he man had been dead for some hours. The body was taken to Moffatt's undertaking parlors and Coroner Cotton Is making an investigation. She was born in Bergholtz and had lived in this area all her life. She was the wife of the late Henry Youngman. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Lasby and Mrs. Marie Reho; two sisters, Mrs. Fredericka Jacoby and Mrs. Wilhelmina Behrens; a grandson, Gary Lasby, and a granddaughter, Kathryn Reho, all of this'city. Coroner Dr. John c. Kinzly, this city, issued a certificate of accidental death. He said death was caused by massive intra-ventricular hemmor- hage. A lifelong resident of this city, Shiesly attended public grammer schools and Kibler High School. He was a former member of Co. K National Guard, a member of St. Fran- cis Church and a charter mem- ber of the Adams Pierce Divi- sion of the Diocese of Buffalo. 12 Brothers, Sisters Shiesley's father, Lester Shi- esley, died in May 1956. Sur- viving are his mother, Mrs. Hazel Shiesley, with whom he resided; seven brothers, Vern Shiesley, Depew,, Ronald, Lee Len, John, Lester and James Shiesley, all of this city; five sisters, Mrs. Alfred Menning- er, Rochester, Mrs. Irving Ja- enecke, this city, Mrs. Daniel Emery, North Tonawanda, Mrs. Richard Graham, Am- herst, and Mrs. Donald Holler, Ft.
