| 165 | Rome NY Daily Sentinel - 8/9/1900 Mrs. Gertie Anderson, wife of Edward Anderson of 328 West Court street, died at Faxton Hospital, Utica, at 5 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon in her 36th year. Mrs. Anderson had been ill for about two weeks, and last Tuesday she was taken to Faxton Hospital to be operated upon. Her system was not strong enough to withstand the operation and she died before regaining consciousness. The deceased was born in Turin and came to this city to live when a child. Eleven years ago she was married to Edward Anderson and they have resided here since that time. She was a faithful attendant at the Liberty Street M. E. church. Besides her husband three sisters and three brothers survive, Mrs. Emma Hurst of Oswego, Mrs. Russell Pierce of Steuben and Mrs. Herbert Burch of Blackmail's Corners. | 174 | "HANS HERR was born in 1639, in Switzerland, at or near Zurich. He became a member of the Mennonite religious society and a prominent minister of that denomination. When persecution became unendurable, many of his congregation emigrated with him to the Palatinate in Germany, which was then governed by a ruler who promised protection and religous freedom. This was satisfactory until the Palatinate fell into the hands of other rulers, when the Mennonites were again subject to persecution. When this occurred, a number of them visited William Penn in London, in 1707, and arranged terms with him to colonize a portion of what is now Lancaster county. In 1709, Hans Herr, John R. Bundely, Hans Mylin, Martin Kendig, Jacob Miller, Hans Funk, Martin Oberholtzer, Wendel Bowman and others bought 10,000 acres of land on the south side of Pequea creek. A warrant was issued for the land October 10, 1710, and it was surveyed October 23, 1710. In the meantime, Martin Kendig traveled to Europe and returned with members of the families of those who had come over in 1709. Hans Herr settled near Lampeter, and later lived with his son, Christian Herr, near Willow Street, where the latter built a large stone dwelling in 1719, which is still standing. "A memorial in the Willow Street Mennonite Cemetery, where Hans Herr is presumed to have been buried, was erected by a Herr reunion group. It gives September 17, 1639 and October 11, 1725 as his respective birth and death dates, and May 1, 1639 and June 9, 1730 for Elizabeth Mylin Kendig Herr. Theodore Herr [compiler of the 1908 Herr genealogy] gives 1644 for her birth date and 1730 for her death. The reunion group's, Theodore Herr's, and Martin G. Weaver's sources for all these dates are currently unknown. In response to this situation, numerous researchers within the past 50 years have attempted to document the existence of Hans Herr. The tradition of his being the aged father of his Herr family in America stems from oral history recorded in 1844 by I. Daniel Rupp (History of Lancaster County), who in the course of his research interviewed 'Pequea' Christian Herr, a Mennonite bishop and Herr descendant. On June 30, 1711, John received a patent for 530 acres in what is now West Lampeter Township. In his will, proved on November 6, 1756, he devised this land to his sons, John and Christian Herr. Neither John Herr nor his son, John Herr, was naturalized, but the other son, Christian, was. On May 21, 1761, Christian Herr received a new patent for the whole tract. John Herr's wife, Frances, died after 1756. John and Frances Herr's undated Das gantz Nuw Testament, printed in Europe and containing the birth records of their children, belongs to the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society." Obituary of Chad Matthew Grout Born in Lockport, N.Y., Chad's parents provided him a childhood filled with home-cooked meals, family gatherings, hunting, fishing and Little League games. There was an atmosphere of doing life together with grandparents and extended family; inviting friends into the circle. Chad attended Lockport High School and graduated from the University of Buffalo, where he amused everyone he met with his spirited ways. After landing his first professional job as an occupational therapist in 1996, Chad met Amy and began entertaining her friends and family as well as a long line of his own bosses and coworkers. A succession of medical/sales positions served as an outlet for his intellectual growth and strong desire to excel while always providing for his family. His unfailing work ethic modeled strongly for his own children and others, creating a particularly special connection with one foster child, Will. Dancing and cooking his way through life, Chad was often creating, building and doing. He ran marathons and ultra-marathons, built anything and everything his family might need and did it all without blinking an eye. Efficiency and effectiveness were natural talents. And although Chad couldn't help but reach destinations ahead of everyone else, he would always circle back. Until we catch up, Chad, you will be missed beyond measure. You are so loved. | 181 | (Amherst Bee - February 25, 1939 - "The last Civil War Veteran in Williamsville, Christian F. Witmer, 99, died Thursday night at his home in 179 Cayuga St. after an illness of several weeks. Mr.Witmer, a member of a pioneer Amherst family homesteaded in the area where the Snyder section subsequently was developed. His father, Tobias Witmer, one of the first engineers and surveyors in Amherst, went to war with his son when President Lincoln called for volunteers. they served the 50th New York Engineering Division." I was born April 11, 1840, Previous to reaching my majority I was engaged mostly on work on the farm and attending school, and assisting my father in making surveys. My first venture in the way of business for myself was teaching the public school in what was known as the "Good District" in the town of Clarence for the winter term of 1860 - 1861. At the close of the school term I took a course in Bryant and Stratton Merchantile College in Buffalo, graduating in the spring of 1862. Enlisted in the 50th N.Y. Volunteers Engineers, August 22, 1862 and was honorably dischardged from the army service at the close of the War. The next few years were devoted to teaching schools during the winter in Levanworth, KS, and Easton Missouri, and on government surveys in the western part of Kansas, during the summer. Those were interesting times for me as you may judge from the fact that my flagman, John Roach, a Cavalryman was killed by Roman Noses' band of Cheyenne Indians while we were engaged in locating a township line on the plains. In 1868, I returned to New York State and took over my fathers business of surveying and insurance. I married Mary S. COTTON of Elma, Sept. 04, 1878. Two sons and three daughters were born of this union. Daughter Grace, born June 24, 1879, and died Sept. 01, 1916. | 182 | (GASPORT) Marcia J. Hobbs, age 83, passed away February 18, 2025 in her home peacefully while under Hospice Care. She was born June 8, 1941 to Raymond and Helen (Zorn) Cady and was a life-long resident of this area. Marcia started working outside the home after raising her children, and had worked at various places, eventually retiring from Ford Gum in Akron, NY. She was an accomplished seamstress, making her daughters clothes all throughout their childhood. Marcia was known as a very independent woman…always fixing things, refinishing furniture, as well as gutting and re-doing many rooms in her home. Her determination to “do what had to be done” and having the knowledge and experience she had acquired, made her the epitome of strength and perseverance in the lives of her children and grandchildren. Marcia was a friend to all and will be dearly missed. Mrs. Hobbs was predeceased by her beloved husband A. James “Red” Hobbs, her siblings: Everett, Frank, Donald, Wayne and Carol Cady and Geraldine Hoffman. She is survived by her beloved children: Dr. Sheila (Joseph) DeWitt of NH, Sandy (Edward) Kress of Gasport, Randy Hobbs of Gasport, her cherished grandchildren: Adam (Brittany) Kress, Emily Kress, Leah DeWitt as well as several nieces and nephews. | 183 | (Gasport) Evelyn Jane (Kill) Elsenheimer was born January 16, 1929 and passed away October 23, 2022. She married Ed Elsenheimer on April 7, 1951. They had 4 children, Irene (Peter) Fadden, Shirley (Doug) White, Ted (Nancy) Elsenheimer and Donna (David) Mills. They were blessed with 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Her sister Joyce Elsenheimer, Brothers-in-law Jesse DeMerle Elsenheimer, Donald (Eleanor) Elsenheimer. She was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teaching each to be loving and kind to one another to all they met along the way. Her legacy was teaching by example and how to be loving and responsible. She was also an aunt, daughter, cousin, granddaughter, a scout leader, a volunteer. She was loved by all who knew her, and she will be missed Evelyn received a dietician degree from Rochester Institute of Technology. She managed several senior meal sites with RSVP and the Salvation Army in Niagara and Orleans Counties. She was active in Church, worshipping and serving others at Orangeport United Covenant Church, Covenant United Church of Christ, and St. Peter’s United Covenant Church in Perkinsville NY. She was a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 153 of Gasport, NY. Mabel was born March 21, 1908 in Niagara Falls, NY, the daughter of the late William and Jenny (Leaderhouse) Kolloff. She was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School and Buffalo State Teachers College. Mabel was a Teacher and Guidance Counselor at Amherst High School for many years then at Lewiston Porter High School for 10 years, retiring in 1973. She was a member of and was formerly on the Board of Directors of the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown. Wilbur was a member of the Calico Sam, the Fingerlakers, and Empire Happy Wanderers Camping groups. After high school, Mike served the United States as a member of the Air Force serving from 1974-1977 as a Telecommunications System Specialist. In 1985, he married the love of his life; Therese Antonucci. Mike was a life member of the Middleport Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Clute Phillips American Legion Post 438, serving as Commander for many years. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mike was also a life-long Buffalo Bills fan. Mr. McCabe was predeceased by his wife Therese in 2017, as well as his father Phillip, mother Arlene, sister Barbara, daughter Nicole and In-laws: Julius and Josephine Antonucci. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WW II. Irven served in the Army from Jan. of 1942 to Sept. of 1945, when he was honorably discharged with the rank of T-5. He was a heavy machine gunner with Company C of the 7th Engineering Battalion and took part in the Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland Campaigns. Irven was the recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and Ribbon with 1 Silver Service Star, the WW II Victory Medal and Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal. In 1947 he married Edna M. (Crewe) Rolfe, who predeceased him on June 22, 1981.Irven was a Payloader Operator for National Carbon Co. in Niagara Falls for over 30 years, retiring in 1984. Ganshaw, age 92, of the Town of Cambria, died Tuesday, December 1, 2009, at his residence, under the loving care of his family and Niagara Hospice.Carl was born February 17, 1917 in the Town of Wilson, the son of the late Herman and Rose (Koeppen) Ganshaw. He was a lifelong vegetable farmer and at the age of 14 he was driving the old Bessemer Truck to the Elk St. Market, in Buffalo, with his father. Carl continued on going to the Clinton-Bailey Market until 2005. He also worked as a radiator repairman at Harrison Radiator in Lockport from 1934, until his retirement in 1974. Carl was a U.S. Army Veteran of WW II, serving from June of 1941 to his honorable discharge in October of 1945. Carl served with Battery B of the 105th Field Artillery Battalion and took part in the Central Pacific, Ryukyus and Western Pacific Campaigns. He was the recipient of the American Defense Service Medal, the AsiaticPacific Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Carl was baptized at, confirmed at, and a lifelong member of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church at North Ridge. In the 1960's he served the church as an Elder. He was a founding member of the Wilson Conservation Club, a member of the UAW Local #686, and a member of the American Legion, and V.F.W. Post #2535 in Lockport. Carl enjoyed beer, baseball (especially the Boston Red Sox), playing euchre, the Buffalo Bills, NASCAR racing and hunting with his brothers at their camp in Whitesville. He loved watching wildlife and all animals, especially his dog, Sable.Carl married Josephine "Jo" M. (Hillman) Ganshaw on July 7, 1952 in Tracey, MN. Joseph was born on October 18, 1915 in Niagara Falls, NY to the late Alexander and Mary (Walsh) Rountree, and attended Our Lady of the Rosary Grammar School and St. Mary's High School. He married Dora Olscamp at St. Mary's of the Cataract Church on August 23, 1941. Unknown to him at the time, he was disallowed from military service in World War II as he was employed at the former Hooker Chemical Corporation in the Production of the top secret Manhattan Project. He continued working at Hooker (now Oxy Chem) as a plastics and sheet metal worker for 40 years, retiring in 1980. In 2000 he moved to Webster to be closer to his daughter and son.Joe was a member of Sacred Heart Church for over 50 years and was a past President of its Holy Name Society. He was a lifelong member of Knights of Columbus Council #247 and Council #4618 in Webster. | 194 | (Wichita Falls, TX) - Lt. Col. Daniel "Dan" Albright, 72, of Wichita Falls, passed away Saturday, October 24, 2009. A graveside service was conducted at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, TX.Dan was the son of the late Harold and Esther (Campbell) Albright. He was born on December 14, 1936 in Niagara Falls, NY. He was raised in the small farming community of Wilson, NY on the shores of Lake Ontario. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1954. He attended college at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, OH, graduating in 1958 with a B.A. degree in Psychology. At that time he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U. S. Air Force. Lt. Albright began his military career at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, reporting in October 1958. His move from Wilson, NY to San Antonio was accomplished via a 1957 MGA convertible with all his worldly possessions in the very small trunk, as well as passenger compartment. He was then stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls.At the old age of 25, he served as Captain during the Cuba Crisis and was Crew Chief Commander in the Missile Silo out of Abilene. It was during this tour that Dan met a rancher and learned to break horses. He soon learned he was a Texan in heart and spirit.Throughout the rest of his military career, Dan was stationed in Rome, NY, Oklahoma City, Thailand, Vietnam, Germany and Washington, D.C. During his tour in southeast Asia he lead secret commando missions into Laos and Cambodia. He was later working with the Office of Special Investigation and was stationed at Ramstcin Air Force Base in Germany. While working in Germany he became acquainted with the German Director of all NATO personnel, who visited him for several years after his retirement. Dan enjoyed traveling throughout Europe and especially loved Austria.After his tour in Germany, Col. Albright was then transferred to the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., where he was working with the Office of Special Investigation and worked with top secret clearances. Dan proudly served our country until retiring in 1979 as Lt. Colonel. He then went back to Wichita Falls where he was employed at Midwestern State University from 1980 to 1995. It was there Dan met his wife, Ruby Wallace Rawn, and they later married in April 1999. He was a member of Grace Church and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Dan loved being out in the woods, as well as fishing on Lake Ontario just blocks from his childhood home.He is survived by his loving wife, Ruby Rawn Albright of Wichita Falls, TX; daughters, LeAnne Henderson, Britt Rothenborg and Cindy Arnold; step-son, Thomas Henderson and four grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Cindy Townsend (Gerald) of Youngstown, NY; niece, Heather Anello (Sal) and nephew, Scott Townsend (Amy), also of Youngstown, NY; four grand-nephews and one grand-niece. Anita is survived by her beloved husband Bud (Gerald) whom she shared 52 years of marriage. She will be sadly missed by her children and grandchildren, Susan Longpre, her husband Paul and their children Kevin and Kyle; Lori Vasey, her husband Bruce and their children Brad and Chris; Jim Brautigam, his wife Rhonda and their children Candice and Amanda. Anita is also cherished by her brother, Bill Lahn and her sister, Delores Timm. She is predeceased by her father, William Lahn; her mother, Meta Rahn; her sister-in-law, Jay Lahn and her brother-in-law, Bob Timm Sr. Anita loved her home in Southampton, that she and Bud shared for the last 12 years, where many family dinners and gatherings took place. She was an active member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church and the KW Jacettes. Anita's family will receive relatives and friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Monday) at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener (749-8467). A celebration of Anita's life will take place 2 p.m. Tuesday October 8, 2002 at St. Lukes Lutheran Church (317 Franklin St. N., Kitchener). Cremation to follow. | 200 | 1 August 1927 Evening News of the Tonawandas Wilhelmina Witkopp, 77 years old, died suddenly last night at her home on the Ward road, town of Wheatfield. Death was attributed to heart disease, with which she had been ailing recently. Mrs. Witkopp's husband, John Witkopp, died in May. Mrs. Witkopp was born in Germany. For the past 56 years she had resided in the town of Wheatfield. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Otto Stoelting of Cambria and Mrs. Christian Hoffmeister of North Tonawanda; two sons, Carl Witkopp of St. Johnsburg and William C. Goerss, of North Tonawanda; 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the residence and half an hour later at the St. John's church, St. Johnsburg. Rev.
