Welch, of 696 Chilton avenue, descendant of ong of the community's most prominent pioneer families and for years an outstanding leader In the city's business, civic and fraternal life, died this morning, after a long illness. Funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart church at 10 a. m. Thursday. Mr. Welch was born In Niagara Falls on January 28, 1878, son of the late Edward and Barbara Walsh Welch, and had lived here all his life. For many years he was president of the Manufacturers' Coal company and became known as one of the leading businessmen in the city. His activities in other fields were numerous and varied. Throughout his life he had been prominent In civic affairs. He was a Democrat in politics but placed the good of the community above party allegiance and always championed the cause of any movement designed to advance the city's welfare. He was intensely patriotic and was prime mover In the celebration which marked the fiftieth anniversary of the Niagara State Reservation a number of years ago. Previous to the celebration effort* of local groups to acquire state funds for the observance had failed. Mr. Weloh, ft nephew of the late Thomas V. Welch, who had been instrumental, as a member of the state Assembly, in having the park created half a century previously, used his personal Influence with state of-icf i&ls and obtained assurance of fln-> anolal security for the celebration. It was appropriate that he was placed In charge of the celebration, which brought Oovemor Herbert Lehman and other dignitaries to the city. Mr. Welch was proud of his Irish ancestry and the traditions of his family. He liked to recall that it was through the influence of his uncle, the late Assemblyman Welch, that Niagara Falls was made a city on St. Patrick's Day in 1892. He made many contribution! to the progress of the city. Among his notable accomplishments was his solution of a coal shortage here during the World War. Industries of the city were unable to get coal and were faced with having to close their plants when he, by quick and decisive action, acquired a coal sup- ply which tided some of the largest industries over the emergency period. One of his last activities in the public Interest was a campaign to prove the advisability of re-estab- lishing the city's convention and in dustrial bureau. He conducted a vigorous drive to marshal public opinion behind his efforts and suc- ceeded in convincing the city coun0 cil of the need for such a bureau. He had many personal character- istics which won him friends in all walks of life. he was extremely en- ergetic, a good speaker and an able organizer. he had considerable tal- ent as a musician and had acquired considerable local fame as a poet, having written a number of inspira- tional poems relating frontier events and centering about the theme of Niagara's glory. One of his songs was sug for years at meetings of the Chamber of Commerce, service clubs and other organlztions here. For years he was a leader in the affairs of Niagara Council. No. 247, Knights of Columbus, of which he was a former grand knight. He was also deeply Interested in rellgiou, educational and welfare affairs of the community He was a brother of the late Captain John J. Welch, Niagara Falls hero of the World War. to whose memory the local post of the American Legion was named. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Zelda Allen Welch; five sons, Thomas V., Charles Allen, Donald E. and James Welch, of this city, and John J. White gladioli and lilies decorated the altar and sanctuary of St, Joseph's for the 8:30 o'clock ceremony which was followed by a Solemn High Nuptial Mass. Given in marriage by her brother, Mr. Joseph Granieri, the bride was attended by her cousin, Miss Martha A. Granieri, as maid of honor, and Miss Lucy Mastromatteo as bridesmaid. Mr. Stephen H. Jarlenski served as best man. The usher was Mr. Samuel T. Granieri, cousin of the bride. A silk veil of illusion, which cascaded from a queen's crown of lace-trimmed with sequins, enhanced the nylon tulle and lace wedding gown of the bride. The lace bodice was styled with a V neckline and long sleeves and rose above a nylon tulle skirt, banded with rosepoint lace, and extending into a cathedral-length train. Her white ros«s-- and stephanoti cascade bouquet was centered with a white orchid. Similar strapless net gowns with stoles and matching ponpom headpieces were worn by the bridal 'attendants. Miss Granieri, in yellow, carried a cascade bouquet of pink roses and blue flowers, while the bridesmaid in blue, carried a cascade bouquet of yellow roses and blue flowers. White accessories were chosen by the mother of the bride to accent her navy blue shantung dress. The mother of the bridegroom selected a navy blue net dress with pink accessories. For traveling to the Hidden Valley ranch in the Adirondack mountains, where the couple will honeymoon, the bride chose a two-piece blue silk dress with "white accessories and an orchid corsage. Police said that Mr. Adams had been gathering scrap metal. It was reported that Dr. Lemuel R. Hurlbut, Lockport, issued, a certificate of death from natural causes. Mr. Adams left home early yesterday and his family began searching for him late in the afternoon when he failed to return home. Police, called to the dump when residents of the area noticed his car parked near the dump for a long time with his dog inside, arrived shortly after Mr. Trowell found the body. A native of Germantown, N. Y Mr. Adams retired in 1950 after 17 years as a Mathieson employe. Previously, he had been a silversmith at the Rogers Silverplate Co. for 27 years before the company moved from this city. | 15045 | Niagara Gazette - 11/16/1959 NORTH TONAWANDA-The driver of a car sought in connection with a hit-run accident was killed early to- day when his car hit a tree in Niagara Falls Blvd. at the entrance of Melody Fair, Wurlitzer Park. Roger Gordon Zuch, 19, of Klemer Rd., Wheatfield, was promounced dead on arrival at DeGraff Memorial Hospital, where he was taken by ambulance. He suffered a fraactured skull and broken left leg. The youth was alone in the car, North Tonawanda police said, and failed to negotiate a slight bend in the road, crash- ing into the tree at 3:17 a.m. Sheriff's Deputies Warrren Gilbert and Nell Pokeiwaldt said they wara searching for a car, Identified as the one young Zuch was driving, after a Niagara Falls motorist had reported being sideswiped about a half-hour earlier in the boulevard. . ,.-'u": "* ' Donald Stark, 2882 McKoon Ave Niagara falls, told dep uties he had been nearly forced from the road about 3 a.m. by two cars. He obtained the license number of one, which he said was the, one which nicked the side of his car, causing an estimated $10 damage. Deputy Gilbert said the license number was registered to Zuch. Because he knew the family, the deputy said he went to the Zuch home and talked with Mr. and Mrs. Wil- Item Zuch, p a r e n t s of the youth, He said the parents were .worried about their son's absence. Later, as the d e p u t i es searched for the missing auto, they came upon the accident in the boulevard, City police said Dr. John C, Kinzly was called. He ordered the body taken to the Fretthold Funeral Home, where funeral services are being arranged, In additioiv-to his parents, surviving are two brothers, Allen Zuch, this city, and Vernon Zuch, at home; and a sister, Kathleen Zuch, at home. Nelson, 71, of 307 Catherine St., died Sunday (Nov. 15, 1964) in Inter-Community Memorial Hospital, Newfane, where he had been a patient for one day; Mr. Nelson, however, had been in ill health for thelast three months. He owned and operated the Nelson Machinec and Auto Works here from 1948 until his retirement in 1959. Mr, Nelson was born Jan 30; 1894, in Mancelona, Mich., the son of John and Ida Latter Nelson. Heattendedschool in Grand Rapids, Mich., and served in the Army Air Force, with the rank of first lieutenant, in World War I as a flight'instructor. At the close of the war, he operated ° a flying field and flight school in Niagara Falls He married Alice M. Beach, in Niagara Falls, in 1923. Mr. Nelson worked at Bell, Aircraft and the Carborundum Co.' until moving to Wilson in 1948. | 15050 | Niagara Gazette - 11/16/1969 Funeral services will be held Tuesday in Lockport for three Niagara County natives who died in a fire Saturday at Batavia Downs Trailer Park, Batavia. Harold E. Beakman, 66; his wife, May Vera Beakman. 53, and her sister, Mrs. Hazel Ogden. 58, died when a fire destroyed the Beakman's house trailer. Mrs. Ogden had been visiting her sister. The fire is believed to have been touched off by a cooking stove, although the exact cause has not been determined. Mr. Beakman, a Lockport native was a house trainer for the Robert Metcalf Stables in Leroy and was a member of the American Trotting Horses Association. He was the son of William Beakman. Mr. and Mrs. Beakman are survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jack (Joyce) Duemmer, of Ransomville, and Mrs. Roger , (Bonnie) Seeibinder, of Albion; a son, Harold J. Beakman of Lockport and nine grandchildren. Mrs. Beakman, the former May V. Coulson, was born in Gasport, the daughter o f William and Mary Coulson. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Gordon Ramming of Middleport. Mr. Beakman is also survived by two brothers,. Howard Beakman of Lockport and William Beakman of Syracuse and a sister, Mrs. Leo (Emma) DeNau of Lockport.
