She also lives on as the spunky Grandma of Olivia, feisty Grammy of Holly, helpful Grandma of Drew, and thoughtful Grandma of Emily (adjectives chosen by her grandchildren). Born 9/19/38 in Buffalo New York to Leroy and Helen (Janke) Tomm, Gail worked her way through Buffalo State College to become an Elementary Teacher, shaping the lives of many during her 34 year career in the Tonawanda Central School system, retiring in 1996. She spent her retirement enjoying her family and lunching with her "lucky ladies" retired teacher friends. A celebration of her life will be held at New York Beer Project, 6933 S. Transit Road, Lockport on Wednesday, September 18, 2019, the day before her 81st birthday, from 5pm to 8pm. Friends and family are invited to honor her life, well lived. 1902 | Obituary of Gary "Jonesie" Jones Gary E. “Jonesie” Jones passed away April 18, 2022. Born June 14, 1946 in Lockport, he was the son of Edward F. and Eleanor (Bistoff) Jones. Jonesie was a graduate of Roy-Hart, Class of 1964. He served in the US Air Force from 1966 to 1968 and was a member of the United States Air Force Band. Since 1979, He worked for Strate Welding Supply, where he was a manager. He was best known as a musician since 1968, singing with Rotary Bed and then Jonesie & the Cruisers. Jonesie was an avid fan of both the Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees. He loved watching races at Ransomville Speedway and riding his motorcycle with friends. He was predeceased by his parents and his infant brother Edward F. Jones, Jr. Jonesie is survived by his wife Tina L. (Barrancotta) Jones; children William E. 1903 | Obituary of Gary Benton Gary L. Benton, age 71 of Wilson, died Thursday April 5, 2018 in Niagara Hospice House in Lockport, after a brief illness. Gary was born July 11, 1946 in Akron, OH, the son of the late Frank "Hank" and Elizabeth (Brown) Benton and has lived in Wilson since 1949. He was a1964 graduate of Wilson High School and was a Vietnam Veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1967. He continued his service as a Boatswain's Mate in the Naval Reserves at Ft. Niagara until 1969. Gary retired as an Inspector from Verizon in 2001 after 32 years of service. He also was a Bartender for many years at the Wilson Boat House where he got his nickname, "The Fox". Gary was a member of the Wilson Conservation and the Rushford Lake Conservation Clubs. He was a past member of the Wilson Volunteer Fire Co., the Wilson Lions Club, and a past board member of both the Island and Olcott Yacht Clubs. Gary was an avid fisherman and in1987 he won a boat in the Niagara County Trout & Salmon Derby. He is survived by his wife, Roxanne (Zastrow) Benton; children, Scott (Jackie) and Brian (Erika) Benton, and Jeanne Miller; step children, Michael (Christina) Cournyea, Justin and MIchelle Strassburg; a brother, David (Shirley) Benton; a sister, Holly (Tom) Dozier; 12 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. He was born September 7, 1959 in Kenmore, NY, a son of Joseph and Esther (Drotter) Gabrys and had lived in this area all of his life. Gary was president of Gasport Wood Products where he worked for many years creating beautiful cabinetry. He enjoyed the outdoor especially fishing and hunting with his father at their camp in the Southern Tier. Gary was most proud of the 8 point buck he shot when he was 13 years old and for the bear he shot in 2006. He loved spending time with his family, he especially adored his grandson Bryson who was “papa’s little helper”, helping plant his vegetable garden or mowing the lawn and was always there for snuggles and ice cream. He served in the U.S Navy from 1963 to 1966 as a radioman aboard the aircraft carrier USS Wasp, where he once received a message from President Lyndon B. Johnson congratulating Jim Lovell and the Gemini crew on their mission. He married Sandra Winchester on December 28th, 1991.Gary enjoyed space, astrology, music, art and painting, and his dogs Phoebe and Bailey. He was always looking to gain knowledge, was a wonderful conversationalist, enjoyed traveling, and spending time with family and friends, especially his extended family, the Adamson’s. Gene grew up in Niagara Falls and met the love of her life, Edward Bank, who she married on May, 6th 1950. This year they would have celebrated their 71st wedding Anniversary. They raised six children together at the house they built on Porter Center Road in Lewiston, NY and later on their farm in Ransomville; Edward, Jr. who predeceased them in 2008, Diane (Donald) Williams of San Antonio, TX, Robert (Lynn) of Tybee Island, GA, Catherine Burns (Fiancée Michael Jones) of Lewiston, NY, Patricia (Thomas) Wasley of Monument, CO, and Danny (Lisa) Bank of Granville, OH. Also, survived by several Grandchildren; Brenda Rodenberg, Jennifer (Andy) Potter, Donald, Michael (Raeland) and Sarah Williams, R. Joseph, Jason( Jackie) and Jared (Chelsea) Burns, Bradley and Dylan Bank and 12 great grandchildren and one on the way.For many years Gene worked as a Nurse’s Aide at the former Ransomville Nursing Home, eventually retiring from Mt. View Health Care Facility, then continued doing home health care for many years. Gene was always working around the farm and enjoyed planting her flowers and trees around the farmhouse, cooking and baking from scratch, all while teaching her children and grandchildren how to cook and bake, and especially, making the best grape jelly from grapes she grew and picked on their farm. Everyone looked forward to enjoying her spaghetti dinner, jelly and baked goods. In addition, Gene was an avid reader, and loved crocheting afghans for her family. She also enjoyed traveling to see her children, taking trips to Atlantic City and Foxwoods Casino, as well as, going to the Ft. Erie Racetrack with Edward, her brother Joey and his wife Margaret. Gene was predeceased by her parents (Mary and Joseph Raymond), brothers, Joseph, John, Chester, Daniel, Edward, William and Franklin and sister Theresa Belkota. She is survived by sisters Julia Works, Frances Cassick, and Rosemarie Bank. He served in the Army from 1945-1947 as a tech 4th grade, serving for ten months in Occupied Japan, receiving the Army of Occupation Medal and the World War ll Victory Medal. He was a charter member and proud exempt member of South Lockport Volunteer Fire Company, having served as assistant fire chief and fire chief. He worked for the Town of Lockport Highway Dept. retiring in 1984 as a mechanic and motor equipment operator. Devoted husband of the late Joyce (Toenniessen) Bull, married June 19, 1948 at First English Lutheran Church, Lockport where he was a member. He built their first house and worked diligently on updating their second house. He could build and fix anything. Past member of the Town of Lockport Historical Society, he was interested and knowledgeable about local history. He was known for his abundant gardens and his love of hunting and fishing. Past active in Wrights Corners Boy Scouts. Born November 26, 1934 in Lockport she was the daughter of LeRoy and Mary (Kozloski) Klino. Geraldine worked for 35 years at Lockport Memorial Hospital where she was a Nursing Assistant retiring in 1989. She would assist her husband, Anthony, harness racing, and she enjoyed the Buffalo Bills, going to Batavia Downs, gardening, and was a big animal lover. Geraldine was predeceased by her husband, Anthony “Tony” Liuzzi October 11, 2016. Geraldine was the sister of Clara (late Richard) Sadlocha and the late Joanne (Bruce) Ryder; also several dear nieces and nephews. 1922 | Obituary of Glenn Zuch Glenn W. Zuch, 87, a retired art teacher, died July 8, 2018 at Niagara Hospice House. Born in North Tonawanda, Mr. Zuch was the only son of Harold and Mary (nee Lobein) Zuch. He was a 1948 graduate of North Tonawanda High School and attended Buffalo State College for his Bachelor’s degree, having his education interrupted by service in the Army during the Korean War. After discharge he continued his studies, receiving his Master’s degree, cum laude, from the same institution. His post-graduate studies included the pursuit of a second Master’s degree, majoring in science education. Before his retirement in 1990 he taught Art for 32 years in the Sweet Home Central School District's Elementary Schools. He also taught summer school science and science enrichment for the gifted. After retiring from the teaching profession he continued his studies and was awarded his Ed D degree in 1999, majoring in Educational Theory. An avid naturalist, Mr. Zuch was instrumental in establishing his school's outdoor education program and authored a series of booklets on Ecology/Field Studies for Elementary School Children. He was a staunch advocate of the Jenny Glen Handicapped Nature Trail at the Buffalo Audubon's Beaver Meadow Nature Center. He was a member of the Buffalo and National Audubon Societies, the American Wildlife Federation, a Life Member of the American Legion, a Life Member of the PTA, New York State Retired Teachers Association as well as many additional professional and social organizations. He was active in volunteer work at his church. Survivors include his wife of 63 years the former Betty Genet; one son, Paul W. of Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter, Annelise (Kevin) Newkirk of Lockport; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren with number six due in August. 1924 | Obituary of Glorian Bald Glorian Mae (Belchner) Bald passed away on August 5, 2022. Born in Ransomville on May 3, 1931, she was the daughter of Herman and Alice (Sievert) Belchner. Glorian was a Lockport High School graduate in 1948 with honors and attended Buffalo State Teacher’s College for two years. From college she took a job as a recording secretary in the Niagara County Judge and Surrogate’s Office. After starting her family, Glorian chose to stay at home to raise her six children while sometimes taking part-time work. When her children were much older she landed a job at Diversified Manufacturing as a purchasing secretary and bookkeeping recorder from which she eventually took an early retirement. Her interests and talents were varied. She will always be remembered by her children and stepchildren for choosing unique Christmas gifts for each one of them (usually handmade) and for preparing and serving a beautiful Christmas Eve buffet. She enjoyed reading, creative writing, gardening, home decorating, the Buffalo Bills, unicorn collecting and word seek puzzles. She and her late husband did much traveling. They took their 34 ft. sailboat on an interesting adventure through canal locks and ocean to Florida, living aboard the entire nine months they were gone. They also traveled in tourist groups to European countries including England, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece and Switzerland. She was happily married to her beloved Gordon for nearly 40 years and they were devoted to each other completely for all those years. Survived by her children Judy Weidenborner, Larry (Peggy) Simons, Sharon (Chet) Basiewicz, Susan (Peter) Holguin, Ronald Simons and Dawn (Jim) Hammond; stepchildren David (Anne) Bald, Robert (Diana) Bald, Deborah (Terrence) Gallagher and Dr. Susan (Peter) Marion; grandchildren Paul Greiner, Drew Brigham, Spencer Brigham, Stephanie Dillof and Gregory Brock; step grandchildren Nathaniel Gallagher, Elizabeth Chesko, Andrew Gallagher, Kyle Gallagher, Rain Bald, Carly Corriere, Nick Corriere, Gordon A. 1925 | Obituary of Gordon W. Kemp Gordon W. Kemp, husband of Lucy (Boudreau) Kemp, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, February 4, 2021 in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. He was born in Niagara Falls on July 26, 1940, the son of the late William and Jean Kemp. He grew up in Youngstown. Gordon was a Navy Veteran, serving from 1957-1960. After 30 years he retired from Harrison Radiator Div of GM. He worked as a fitness instructor for the old Lockport YMCA after his retirement. Although he was involved in may sports, his real passion was golf. In his later years Gordon faithfully watched the Golf Channel daily. He was a loyal fan of Notre Dame and the Buffalo Bills. Gordon was a former member of the Lockport Ski Club, Screwball Club, and Oak Run Golf Course. He is survived by his wife, Lucy of 40 years; step-son Michael Annalora; grandchildren Bryan and Dominic Annalora; brother William (Mary Ann) Kemp; predeceased by his sister Barbara Ryan. 1929 | Obituary of H. Douglas Conlin H. Douglas Conlin passed away February 5, 2020 under the care of his loving family and Niagara Hospice. Born June 23, 1939 in Lockport he was the son of Harold H. and Frances E. (Bugenhagen) Conlin. Doug was a DeSales High School graduate Class of 1958 and served in the in the US Air Force active duty for two years at Lowry Air Base in Denver, CO and six years in the 107th Tactical Fighter Wing, Air Force National Guard in Niagara Falls. He worked as a stock man for A&P in Lockport, the FBI in Washington DC where he was a fingerprint technician, and from 1964-1994 for Delphi Harrison. Doug was a life member of both the Council 319 Knights of Columbus and Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Assembly 754. He and his family were very active with the 4-H being awarded Family of the Year and also active with Opportunities Unlimited being awarded the Opportunities Unlimited Family Recognition Award. Doug enjoyed family celebrations, was devoted to assisting his family members with their various activities, enjoyed dining out, and Sunday afternoon rides to Olcott Beach. Hartwig Harold “Harry” Ernest Hartwig, Town of Cambria peacefully received his call to his Lord Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at the age of 87, after being hospitalized at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital under the care of doctors, dedicated nurses and his family, he passed of natural causes. Harold was born February 4, 1934 to William A. and Louisa A. (Bugenhagen) Hartwig at his home in Clarence Center, NY, the youngest of eight children. Harold graduated from Parker High School, Clarence, NY in 1951; served in the U.S. Army for 21 months, worked for Lockport contractor Herb Pless before owning and operating Door Company of Niagara, based in Niagara Falls and serving Western Niagara County for 33 years. Harry previously served as the Republican Election Machine Custodian for close to 30 years for the Districts of Cambria and was the Maintenance Superintendent of Cambria Hillside Cemetery for 15 years, retiring in 2020.After living among many hills, and some valleys, Harry writes the final chapter of his life and leaves his beloved wife of 61 years, Barbara (Blackman) Hartwig, four children, Daniel (Kathleen) Hartwig, Mary (Bruce) Zeller, Timothy (Barbara) Hartwig, and Rebecca (Robert) Miller. 1940 | Obituary of Helen S. Helmich Helen S. Helmich (Nee Henschel), age 77, of Ransomville, NY died on November 25, 2021. Following a lengthy illness, she passed away peacefully in the care of her son, Paul. Helen was born on April 24,1944 at her family’s farm located in Ransomville, NY. She was the daughter of the late Alexander and the late Helen (Zelinski) Henschel. Helen graduated from Wilson CSD in 1962. Subsequently, she attended Millard Filmore, and the University at Buffalo, where in 1965 she obtained her Registered Nursing degree, and in 1968 a bachelors’ degree in nursing respectively. She married Gerald P. Helmich on January 20, 1967, who predeceased her on January 8, 2007. Helen started her nursing career at Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital and served in many capacities including being an integral part of the team establishing the first ICU.In 1971 she left nursing to join the work of her husband, cultivating a small family farm begun by his father. By the time they retired in 2006, it had grown to nearly 2,000 acres.She was known for her prolific baking skills, including homemade jams, pies, and other tasty treats. She was considered the center of the family by her children, siblings, nieces and nephews. Helen was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Ransomville.Surviving are her children; Paul A. (Stephen Kishel) Helmich, Brett R. Helmich and Leigh P. Hank entered the United States Army National Guard on April 18, 1955 and was honorably discharged as a SP3 on April 17, 1958. He worked at Occidental Chemical Corporation as a chemical operator, retiring after 42 years there. In his spare time, Hank was an avid hunter and gardener. His garden took up his entire yard and was his pride and joy. He also enjoyed going for long bike rides and he rode his bike daily. Born at home in the Town of Hartland, he was the son of the late Roland and Helen (nee Whitmore) Collins. Howard loved playing cards, betting on the horses, going to the Casino, and scratch off tickets. He had a green thumb and was proud of his flowers and loved to garden. Howard served honorably in General Patton’s 3rd Armored Division of the Army during World War II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was one of the first troops to free the Concentration Camp Buchenwald Germany. After the war, Howard met the love of his life, Shirley (nee Hartner). Together Howard and Shirley had 5 children. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years, Shirley, son - Kenneth (Linda) Collins, daughter - Karen Mensch, grandson - Nathan Graham, his brothers - La Verne, John, Robert, and sister, Eileen.
