19701 | North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 10/25/1951 In a candelight ceremony, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.. in St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Miss Jean Elizabeth Broecker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Broecker, became the bride of Richard Duerr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Duerr. The Rev. Paul Fretthold officiated. Lighted candles adorned the al- tar which was decorated with Sowers and ferns. The soloist, Miss Ellen Genet sand The Lord's Prayer and Because. Carl Koehnke played organ music throughout the ceremony. Miss Broecker, given in marriage by her father wore a gown of Chantilly lace and satin. Applique of seed pearls and crystal beads outlined the sweetheart neckline. The skirt, with panels of lace, fell into a cathedral length train. A tiara of pearls and crystal beads held her lace edged illiusion viel. The bride carried a bouquet of white roses and carnations centered with an orchid. She wore crystal earrings and a matching necklace, a gift from the bridegroom. A peacock blue velvaray nt and taffeta gown was worn by the ma- tron of honor, Mrs. Earl Leverentz. She wore a headdress of yellow rses and mitts to match her gown. Her bouquet was an assort- ment of gall colored flowers. The bridesmaids, attired in gowns of shrimp coor velvarary net and taffeta were Miss Agatha Marazita and MIss Gloria Tooke. They carried bouquets of mixed Autumn flower, and wore flowers in their air. Robert Duerr, attended his bro- ther as best man and the ushers were Earl Leverentz and Robert Proefrock. Mrs. Broecker, the bride's mo- ther, selected a navy blue faille suit with navy hat and purse and white gloves. Her corsage was of pink roses and white crysanthe- mums. The bridegroom's mother chose a steel gray dress with black accessories and wore a corsage of red roses and white pompons. A wedding cake an dflowrs flanked on either side with tall tapers, decorated the bride's table in Sweeney Hose Company hall where 300 guests atended a re- ception. For her wedding trip to the New England States, Mrs. Duerr wore a black and white checked suit with black accessories and an orchid. 19712 | North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 10/26/1965 John Brauer, 83, after whom Brauer Park in North Tonawanda was named, died yesterday at his son's home at South Bethlehem, near Albany. Mr. Brauer was born in Buffalo and moved to North Tonawanda in 1918. He formerly resided at 43 Old Falls Blvd. in North Tonawanda, where he owned and operated "Riverview Nursery" until he retired 10 years ago. He was Seventh Ward supervisor in 1926 and 1227 and an alderman on the North Tonawanda Common Council from 1934 to 1939. He was a Reiublican. When he retired in 1939, the Common Council named "Brau- er Park" in appreciation of his "generosity in donating and su- pervising the planting of trees in the city." After his retirement, Mr. Brauer moved to Florida. He went to live with a son, J. Everton Brauer at South Bethlehem last Easter. Besides his son, Mr. Brauer is survived by his wife, Ethel Johnston Brauer. Services for Mr. Brauer will be Friday at St. Stephens Episcopal Church at Delmar, N.Y. 19715 | North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 10/27/1930 Silvan Batt, 24 years old, son ot Mr. and Mrs George D. Batt, 2S3 Miller street, and Edward Hempel. 14 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Hempel, 119 Miller street, were fatally injured in a collision between an automobile in which they were riding and one of the Kulp Transportation company's trucks at the junction of Military and Knoche roads shortly after 1 o'clock yesterday morning. The young men expired while boing rushed to the DeGraff Memorial hospital in an ambulance, summoned by the police. The automobile in which the North Tonawanda victims were riding was owned and driven by Edward McVey, 27 years old, 29 Belmont street. Bufaflo. It was a roadster. The owner was the only other occupant of the ear. McVey escaped with cuts and bruises. He was able to go to headquarters after the accident and make a report, after which he went to the Buffalo City hospital for treatment. In his report to the town police McVey said that he was driving North on Military road and was approaching the intersection of Knoche road when he saw the rear end of ihe Kulp truck, going In the same direction. He said that he was almost upon it before seeing it. He swerved suddenly to the left, the front end of his oar going under the body of the truck. Hempel and Batt, sitting on Mc- Vey's right side, were hurled from the car, while McVey, just missing being struck by the protruding truck body, hurtled into the street. Aid Summoned A passing motorist hurried io the Tonawanda city police station for help. Hamp's ambulance was dispatched to the aid of the injured and Hempel and Batt rushed to the hospital. When carried into the operating room they were pronounced dead by physicians who had assembled to attend them. Hempel's throat was cut and it was believed that he bled to death Batt'a skull and chest were crushed. Ernest G. Vandrel, 142 South street, Buffalo, driver of the Kulp truck, said that he stopped and assisted in placing* Hempel and Batt in the ambulance. Batt, Hempel and McVey had long been chums. McVey came to North Tonawanda Saturday night and departed for Buffalo with his friends about 10 o'clock. He was bringing them home at the time of the mishap. Batt N. T. H. 3. Graduate Batt was a graduate of the North Tonawanda high school and a member of North Tonawanda Council, K. of C Besides his parents he is survived by a brother, Merton, San Diego, Calif., and two sisters, the Misses Eleanor and Marcella Batt, North Tonawanda. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 8.30 o'clock from the residence and half an hour later from the Ascension church. Rev. John F. Kelley will officiate and interment will be at Mt. Olivet. Hempel was employed by his father in a store conducted in the City market on Robinson street. He is survived by his parents, a brother, Clarence C. Hempel, and a sister, Mrs. Roy Helf, both of the Tonawandas. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from the house and half an hour later from Frieden's church. Rev. Theodore Mayer will officiate and interment will be at Elmlawn. It was reported that McVey was arrested yesterday in connection with the accident. At . the town police station today the report was denied. Coroner J. E- Helwig, who was called ino the case wien the youths were brought to the hospital, said that he had not ordered McVey's arrest. He now' turns his attention to gardening and a flourishing vegetable garden and his rose beds, ieaturing many varieties of blooms, are his "pride and joy." He and Mrs. Brenon take an active interest in the doings of their family. Mrs. Brenon for relaxation "loves to play solitaire." They have 21 grandchildren. Because of the death of Leo Brenon, Mr. Brenon's brother, who had been his best man 50 years ago, the dinner party planned for several weeks was limited to family guests.
