21005 | North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 6/16/1969 Funeral services are scheduled Wednesday for Johhn V. Bedell. 58, a Tonawanda restaurant operator who died yesterday after apparently suffering a heart attack. The Tonawanda Fire Departments first aid squad was called early yesterday to Mr. Bedell's home at 129 Clinton St. and administered oxygen to him before he was taken to DeGraff Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Mr. Bedell was president of Bedell's Candlelight Lounge and Restaurant Inc., 83 Niagara St. He and his brother, Ossian. operated the Candlelight Restaurant and Bedell's Coffee Shop, 13 Main St. for about 15 years up until thr.ee years ago when John Bedell took over the restaurant and Ossian Bedell assumed control of the coffee shop operation. Born in Buffalo, Mr. Bedell had resided in Tonawanda for 50 years. A 1931 graduate of Tonawanda High School, he managed and owned several restaurants in Tonawanda before opening the Main Street coffee shop in 1946. Mr. Bedell was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church, Twin City Council 413, Knights of Columbus; National and Western New York Restaurant Association. Tonawandas Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club; Eldredge Club; Elks Lodge 860; Niagara Hose Company and Tonawanda Exempt Volunteer Firemen's Association. 21016 | North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 6/18/1946 Mr. and Mrs. John Wendler of 58 Falconer street celebrated their Golden Anniversary last night with a family dinner in Cosmo Inn followed by a reception to friends and neighbors in their home. The parents of two children. Miss- Mary Wendler and William Wendler, the couple have lived in the Falconer street home during their entire married life. They have two grandchildren. Mr. Wendler came to North Tonawanda 37 years ago from Wolcottsburg, N. Y. Finding employment here he worked for seven years before returning to his home town to marry his childhood sweetheart, Lizette Wollenberg. Mr. Wendler's first job in the Tonawandas was painting merrygo- round horses for the old Armitage Herschell Co., and his subsequent career has followed this work ever since. His leadership won him early promotion and he wss finally put in complete charge of merry-go-round manufacture in the plant. When the Armitage- Herschell Co. discontinued the manufacture of the famous amusement devices, Mr. Wendler and the late Allan Herschell and Frederick Fritche organized the Allen Herschell Company. The company rapidly expanded snd following the death of Messrs Herschell and Fritche, Mr. Wendler and his son, William, then just out of college, acquired full ownership. A year ago they purchased the business of the Spillman Engineering Co. so that today, Mr. Wendler hesds the largest amusement ride manufacturing company in the world. At seventy six years, he at still working a regular hour day and is, according to his fellow employees, the first one at the office every morning, in fact you can set your watch by John Wendler's appearance at t a.m. Both Mr. and Mrs. Wendler enjoy exceptionally good health. They attribute this to absence of worry and regular hours. They have taken but one vacation in their entire married life. Their many neighbors and friends joined in wishing them a continuance of a long and happy life together. The bridesmaids, Mrs. Eleanor Pagels and Mrs. Helen Pagels wore Identical gowns of pink marquinette with fitted bodice and full skirt. They carried bouquets of pink roses, white and pink snap dragons, and wore a tiara of roses in their hair. Mr. Elmer Pagels attended the groom as best man, and the ushers were Mr. Sherwood Lorenz and Mr. Raymond May. The bride's mother, Mrs. Pagels, wore a black and white mesh dress, while the groom's mother, Mrs. Wollenberg, choose a grey crepe dress. Each wore a corsage of roses and sweetpeas. After the ceremony a wedding dinner was served at St Paul's pariah hall with covers laid for fifty guests. The bride's table was decorated with a tiered wedding cake, adorned with miniature bride and groom, and white or ange blossoms. In the evening a reception was given at the home of the bride with one hundred fifty guests present Mr. and Mrs. Wollenberg left for a western wedding trip, and thereafter will be at home at 509 Falls Blvd. The bride's going away costume was a tan and brown drew with brown accessories, and a eoraage'ef roses. Carl Frankenstein performing the caremony. The church was beautifully decorated with palms and baskets of cut flowers. A large arch covered with white carnations and ferns was suspended immediately in front of the altar. The bride, given in marriage by her father wore a gownof white satin trimmed with a chantilly lace yoke adorned with satin rose petals and small pearl beads, and having a long train. Her veil was of silk net with chantilly lace arranged in cap shape. she wore white satin slippers and carried a shower bouquet of white roses and gypsophila. Mrs. Walter Stenzel, sister of the bride, acted as matron of honor, her gown being of yellow mousseline de sole with matching accessories and she carried a bou- quet of yellow roses. Miss Ruth Feb, maid of honor wore pink mousseline de soie, matching accessories and carried a bouquet of pink roses. Miss Nora Behm, was bridesmaid, wearing apple green mosseline de sole, with green accessories and carried bou- quet of yellow roses. All wore lily of the valley head bands in their hair. Little Marilyn Hoffmeister was flower girl, wearing blue or- gandie and she carried a basket of mixed flowers.
