A native of Tonawanda, he was a brother of Ernest L. Vigrass, Jr.,, who died in 1968 and Evelyn Voisinet who died in 1965. Mr. Vigrass had been em- ployed by the City of Tonawanda Public Works Dept. for 17 years, retiring iin 1976 and was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in North Tonawanda. He is survived by his wife, Elsie (nee Koch) Vigrass; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Joanne) Huey of Gasport, N.Y., and Mrs. William (Kathleen) Jay of North Tonawanda; two sons, James (Wanda) Vigrass of North Tonawanda and Kenneth L. (Joe) Balling, 85, a native of Tonawanda and long-time parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church, died Friday in St. F r a n c i s Home in Williamsville. Mr. Balling was a life member of the Bricklayers Local 49 of Tonawanda. He retired from Balling Brothers in 1964, a firm begun by his brother, the late Henry J Balling, and involving all eight of the Balling brothers. A veteran of World War I, Mr. Balling was the husband of the late Myrtle Near. He is survived by three sons, Michael J. (Patricia) Balling and Robert (Joanne) Balling both of Tonawanda. and Dr. Peter (Lynn) Balling of Piseatwa. N.J., and a daughter, Mrs Richard (Patricia) Himes of Kettering, Ohio. He is also survived by a brother, Jacob Balling of North Tonawanda and a sister, Mrs. Frances Brown of Englewood, Fla,, 12 granchildren and it great-grandchildren. Friends may call today and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Creasey Memorial Chapel, Inc., 138 Delaware St.. Tonawanda. 21404 | North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 7/25/1913 Xavier Batt, 81 years old, died sud denly at his home at No. 69 Main street late yesterday afternoon. Coroner George B. Helwig was called this morning to Investigate the cause of the man's death and pronounced it due to heart disease. Mr. Batt was connected with the North Tonawanda street department for many years and was working half an hour before he died. He was sit ting in a chair at his home, talking with, members of his family and other relatives, when he was stricken. Dr. C. W. Clendenan and Dr. R. H. Wilcox were called but the man was dead when they arrived. Mr. Batt came to this country from Germany when he was four years old and settled at Cheektowaga. They were passengers on the schooner Mary which was caught in a storm on the Atlantic and for many days threatened with destruction. The boat was 113 days crossing the ocean. During the storm the passengers made a vow that they would erect a chapel in honor of the Mother of Our Lord. This chapel was erected at Cheektowaga and is known as "Our Lady Help of Christians." It was in the cemetery at the rear of the edifice that Mr. Batt's parents were buried. He will be buried in the same plot. Before coming to the Tonawandas 41 years ago, Mr. Batt conducted a brew (Continued on Page Four) ery at Williamsville. Upon locating here he opened a flour mill and was later engaged in the manufacture of shingles. His mill was one of the finest of its kind to be operated in the Tonawandas. Had Mr. Batt lived,until July 4, 1914 he and his wife would have observed their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Besides his wife, Mr. Batt Is survived by four daughters, Mrs. John Netter, Mrs. Helen Rathgeber, Mrs. Cather- ine Graff and Miss Rose Batt and five sons, William, Frank, Charles, Edward and Albert of Tonawanda and Casper of Cleveland- He leaves 35 grand- children and 5 great grandchildren. Dorazio, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard A. Dorazio of Fremont St, became the bride of Lauren H. Andres of 171 William St. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Walter F. Hetzel before the altar which was decorated with white carnations and chrysanthemums, palms and candelabra holding tall tapers. Miss Ellen Johns, accompanied by the organist, Mrs. Evelyn Cary Miller, sang "Through the Years" and "I Love You." Wearing a gown of white slipper satin and fingertip veil of illusion, the bride was given in marriage by her father. The gown was fashioned with a basque bodice, with Chantilly lace yoke and long sleeves pointed over the hands. Her veil was edged with lace. She carried a bridal bouquet of white roses. The maid-of-honor, Miss Jenny Thomsen, wore a gown of American Beauty satin with basque waist and bouffant skirt and a matching tiara headdress. She carried pink and white roses. Gowns of sea-foam satin were worn by the bridesmaids, Mrs. Betty Kruss and Miss Grace Terry of Kenmore and Mrs. Fern Pils of Lockport. All carried . American Beauty roses. The flower girl, Bonnie Butcheri, carrying a basket of roses and rose petals, wore a frock of white satin and double illusion with a basque bodice edged with a peplum and puffed sleeves. David Andres was the best man and ushers were Willard Andres, Maurice Hanel and Allen Butcher!. A wedding dinner for the immediate families was served in Tree Haven. A reception in American Legion Hall was attended by 250 guests. Mrs. Dorazio received her guests in a gown of powder blue lace over blue satin. She wore dusty rose and black accessories and a corsage of Talisman roses. Mrs. Walter Andres, the bridegroom's mother, chose a plumcolored puff-taffeta dress with gray and black accessories and a corsage of yellow roses. Hostess for the occasion, will be one of her -granddaughters. Mrs. Kenneth Stryker, 47 Canton St., another granddaughter. Mrs. Robert Hutchinson is baking the birthday cake. Mrs. Ensminger's late husband owned a large tract of land in the Military and Ensminger R, section, of what is now the Town of Tonawanda and at: that, time was within the limits of Tona- wanda. Ensminger Rd- was named for the family, Mr. Ensminger died about, 20 years ago. At the time of her marriage and early married life, farms abounded in this section of the Frontier and Mrs. Ensminger, over the years, watched the changes irom the rural tone to the present residential and indus- trial theme. Mrs. Ensminger, the former Julia Klingenschmitt, was born in Wendelville, July 28, 1868 and was married in 1893. She and the late Philip Ensminger were the parents of five daughters. Mrs. Louis Scheid, Kenmore. .Mrs. Thomas Brush and Mrs. William. Breitenbach, both Tonawanda; Mrs. Walter Radant, Gasport; and Miss Margaret Ens- minger, who lives with her moth- er in 1850 Miitary Rd. She has nine grand children and 15 great grandchildren. the family still celebrates Christmas "at grand- ma's." Because of progressively failing eyesight, Mrs. Ensminger identi- fied member of the family large- ly through their voices. An acid radio fan, she listens to the stor- ies and for the latest new items on the radio and television. She enjoys vacations and traveling by car and is active and alert to the world and people around her. She tells her children and grand- children "they have it easy" i their homes, in comparison to the "old days" and she rejoices with the conveniences available to the modern housewife. Her "party" will begin at noon with a buffet luncheon. Bennett of 27 Leonhardt St., and Robert John Schroeder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry A. Schroeder, 266 Olympic Ave., Buffalo. The Rev. Joseph J. Garin performed the 10 a.m. Nuptial Mass July 17. Given in marriage by her fa- ther, the bride wore a ballerina length gown of white tulle and Chantilly lace with a fitted bodice and bouffant skirt. Her fingertip veil was caught to a coronet of seed pearls and she carried a prayer book covered with a spray of white carnations and stephanotis. The maid of honor, Miss Marie Schroeder, and the bridesmaid, Miss Violet Bennett, were dressed in matching ballerina gowns of Nile green and yellow organdy over taffeta with wide-brimmed straw hats. They carried baskets of white and yellow Shasta daisies. Donald Hart man attended the bridegroom as the best man and brothers of the bride, Norman and Donald Bennett, were ushers. For her daughter's wedding Mrs. Bennett selected a dress of grey lace over dusty pink taffeta with white accessories and a corsage of white carnations- The bridegroom's mother c h o s e an all aquamarine nylon taffeta and also wore white accessories and a cor- sage of white carnations. After the ceremony, a wedding breakfast for 50 guests was served in the home of the bridegroom. Later in the day the bridal party attended a wedding dinner in the Elks Club and then went to the bride's home where en outdoor reception was given for 100 guests including Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Scheu and family of Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Constance Corey and Mrs. Madeline Robinson of Detroit, Mich. For traveling, the bride wore a dove-grey suit with red accessories. The couple now is honeymooning through the Midwest and will be at home at 402 Witmer Rd. after Aug. 30. Mrs. Battaglia ended her teaching career in January at Amherst Central Junior High School, where she taught a unified (English, history, reading combination) Grade 8 class. She taught there 13 years. Mrs. Battaglia p r e v i o u s ly taught for 12 years in the Buffalo public school system and began her grade teaching in a one-room school at Clarence. A graduate of the State University College at Buffalo, she did postgraduate work in education at Duke University, "New York University and the State University at Buffalo. She was a member of the New York State Teachers Association. Born in Buffalo, she was the former Carmella Corritore. Survivors Include her husband, Charles J. She was born in St. Johnsburg, but had llived in North Tonawanda the greater part of her life.. She was a member of the Ladies Aid Society of St. Mark's church on Washington street. Besides her husband, William Westphal, she is survived by four daughters, Mrs Gustave Lemke ad the Misses Lucy, Matilda and Emma Westphal,, all of North Tonawanda. 21447 | North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 7/6/1926 Marie L.. Buike, 69 years old, died Sunday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Engel, 76 Allen street, after a lingering illness. She was born in Germany. For the past 43 years she has been a resident of North Tonawanda. She is survived by her husband, Wiliam Buike; two daugh-- ters, Mrs Engel and Mrs Dale DeWire of North Tonawanda, three sons, Frank, Edward and Otto Buike, of North Tonawanda; nine grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Otto Karre of North Tonawanda and Mrs. Augusta Giode of Germany and a brother Frank Schultz of Germany. Mrs. Buicke was a mem- ber of the Ladies Aid Society of St. Paul's church, East Felton street. The funeral will be held tomorrow after- noon at 2:30 o'clock aat the Engel resi- dence, Rev. Mrs. Volkstadt, who had been in failing health for some time, was, stricken with paralysis a few hours before death. She was a life-long resident of North Tonawanda, a member of the Friedens Evapgelical church and the Ladies Aid Society of the church. She leaves a husband, Charles; two daughters, Ruth and Florence, North Tonawanda; two sons, Wilfred, Kenmore and Howard, Niagara Falls; two grand sons one granddaughter; two sisters, Miss Hulda Zebulske, and four brothers, Charles, Fred, John and Edward Zebulske, all of North Tonawanda.
