21501 | North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 8/29/1947 Palms, bouquets of gladioli and tall candelabra adorned the altar of Friedens Evangelical Church at 7 p.m. Saturday, August 16, for the marriage of Miss Helen Salefske, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Salefske of 259 Miller street, to Mr. Charles Burtch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Burtch of 123 Payne avenue. The Rev. Carl Berges officiated at the double ring ceremony, and Miss Laura Neumann played traditional wedding music. Preceding the ceremony Miss Jean Swetland sang "At Dawning" and during the ceremony sang "The Lord's Prayer". The bride given in marriage by her father, wore a gown of white marquisette made with round neckline, fitted bodice, long sleeve pointed at the wrists and a full skirt ending in a long train erged with a dust ruffle. Her finger tip veil was caught with orange blosoms and she carried a shower bouquet of white roses. Mrs. Vincent Bonerb of Kenmore, cousin, of the bride, was the matron of honor. Her gown was of yellow taffeta made wtih a square neckline, cap sleeves and a full skirt which formed a bustle in the back. She wore long matching mitts and carried a bouquet of yellow roses and orchid button chrysanthemums tied with orchid ribbon. In her hair she wore a tiara of the same flowers. Mrs. Thomas Niland, Jr., also a cousin of the bride, and Mrs. Paul Mallue were bridesmaids. Their gowns were of rose taffeta made like that of the matron of honor. They carried bouquets of pink roses and orchid button chrysanthemums tied with orchid ribbon and wore matching tiaras in their hair. Mr, James Burtch was best man for his brother, and the ushers were Mr. Frederick Burtch, also a brother of the groom, and Mr. Frank McCormick, a cousin. Mrs. Salefske, mother of the bride chose a dress of hunters green with brown accessories. Her corsage was of pink roses. Mrs, Burtch, mother of the bridegroom, wore a grey dress with black accessories and a corsage of red daisies. Immediately following the ceremony, a buffet supper for 125 guests was served in the church parlors. Later a recption for the bridal party and Immediate families was held at the home of the bride. For traveling to the New England States, the bride chose a rose gabardine suit with black accessories and a gardenia corsage. Pre-nuptiaJ parties held for the bride included a red and white kitchen shower by the Misses Iilie and Edna. 21504 | North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 8/29/1962 W. Fred Rose, 74, of 85 Ilion St., Tonawanda, last night in Kenmore Mercy Hospital. Mr. Rose's.death was attribut- ed to a ruptured blood vessel he suffered Sunday while driving his car in Kenmore. He was stricken while turning from Delaware Road into Nassau Avenue. His c a r Jumped the curb and struck a porch at 24 Nassau Ave where it came to a halt. Mr. Rose was taken to the hospital suffering no apparent injury from the accident but was admitted for observation. He underwent surgery late yesterday. An Erie County Medical examiner said the ruptured blood vessel was the cause of death, Mr. Rose, a native of Buffalo, operated a printing business for the past 37 years at 318 Schenck St., North Tonawanda. Carl A Frankenstein performing the ceremony in front of the fireplace in the presence of sixty guests. Large baskets of peach gladioli, blue and white asters and candelabra were the effective house decorations. The bride wore a gown of white faille taffeta, with a tight fitting bodice, full skirt and long train, having velvet applique, also with sweetheart neckline and long full sleeves. Her finger-tip veil fell from a tara of orange blossoms and she carried a shower bouquet of white gladioli. Miss Marion Salefske was maid of honor wearing a gown of peach taffeta having a long full skirt and V shaped neckline. The bridesmaids, Miss Cora Sahr and Miss Velma Zuck, cousin of the groom, were attired in blue taffeta gowns fashioned similar to the maid of honors. 21513 | North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 8/30/1940 A beautiful wedding was solemnized on Saturday morning at eleven forty-five on the porch of tne Ascension church rectory when Miss Delores Behm, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Behm of 178 East Felton street, became the bride of Robert F. Batt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Batt, So., of Lincoln avenue. The Rev Father McCarthy officiated in tha presence of the immediate families and friends using the double ring ceremony. The bride wore a white bengaline taffeta fitted gown with short train and sleeves. The gown had a row of tiny buttons down the back to the waist, a high neckline which was fastened at the throat with two bows in a row. Her scalloped veil of illusion was fingertip length and fell in two folds from a tiara, in halo effect, of tiny pearls. Across the back of the headdress was a string of pearls which were on the veil of her mother's twenty-seven years ago. She wore white sandals and parried a bouquet of bride's roses and white phlox tied with wide satin ribbon. The bride also wore a two strand necklace of pearls the gift of the groom. Miss Harriet Batt, sister of the groom, as maid of honor, wore a pink taffeta gown with a sweetheart neckline, short puffed sleeves and a bouffant skirt with a short train. She wore a tiara of Briarcliff roses in her hair, white sandals and carried a bouquet of pink Briarcliff roses and blue delphiniums tied with widt pink satin ribbon. She also wore two strand necklace of pearls, the gift of the bride. The groom was attended by Mr. Stuart Park as best man. - The bride's mother wore a navy blue silk printed dresa, having a redingote of chiffon of the same print. The mother of the groom wore a rose crepe dress with a short Jacket of the same material and color. Each wore a corsage of roses and delphiniums and matching accessories. Mrs. Hulda Urtel, maternal grandmother of the bride, wore a black satin dress with an over dress of black net embroidered in white. She wore a corsage of pink roses. A dinner was served at fourthirty in the basement of the St, Paul's church in East Felton street, with covers for one-hundred guests. Covers were laid for fourteen at the bride's table which was centered with a four-tiered wedding cake topped with a miniature bride and groom under a wedding bell. In the evening a reception was held at the home of the bride. Out-of-town guests present were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Batt of Tully, N. Y., Mrs. Mathilda Humble of Milwaukee, Wis., Mr. Bill Peters of North Carolina and also a number from Buffalo, Lockport and Niagara Falls. Mr. and Mrs. Batt left for a wedding trip through tha Blue Ridge mountains and after August 26 will be at home in 198 Bryant street. For her going-away outfit the bride wore a black crepe dresi with white accessories and a corsage. 21514 | North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 8/30/1944 Machinists Mate 3/c Melvin H. Zastrow, 21, has been reported missing on the Destroyer Escort Fiske while participating in action against the enemy. The Fiske was sunk in the Atlantic in the early part of August according to a telegram received by Mr. and Mrs. Fred H. Zastrow of RFD 2, Nash road, North Tonawanda from Vice Admiral Randall Jacobs, the Chief of Navy Personnel. Entering the service in February 1943, Melvin trained at Samp- son Naval Training Center and at Norfolk, Va., before being as- signed the Fiske. Brecker, of Sanborn, was solemnized at 10 o'clock on Saturday moijping in Ascension church, the Rev. Daniel Molloy officating. The church was decorated with gladioli. The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore white satin gown made princess style, the train gored with Chantilly lace. Her long veil of illusion was held in place by a halo of orange blossoms. She carried a beautiful spray of white roses and baby breath. Miss Veronica Arbeiter sister of the bride was maid of honor, and Miss Elizabeth H. Heim was the bridesmaid. Both were dressed alike in white moire dresses trimmed with red velvet and carried sprays of red roses .and baby breath. Each wore a halo of red rose buds and baby breath. Mr. Broecker had as best man his brother, Mr. Albert Broecker. The usher was the groom's nephew, Mr. Norman Warblow. Mrs. Arbeiter, mother of the bride, wore navy blue chiffon and the groom's mother, Mrs. Brocker, a black crepe gown trimmed with satin. Each wore a corsage of red roses and baby breath. ALSO North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 8/6/1908 Death yesterday afternoon removed from the Tonawandas another of the pioneer settlers, when Mrs. George Henry Rumbold of 26 Delaware street passed away after an illness of 12 weeks. The deceased was the mother of Mr. Jacob H. Rumbold of North Tonawanda, W. P. Rumbold of New York, F. F. Rumbold of Tonawanda and of Mrs. William Steele of Tona wanda. A husband and two brothers, Peter and Henry Smith, and two sis ters, Mrs. William Dick and Mrs. Fred Weiser, also survive. Mrs. Rumbold was 60 years of age, and "had lived in the Twin Cities for the past 55 years The funeral will take place from the house at 26 Delaware street, Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, the Rev. 21550 | North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 8/7/1936 Two young people were fatal ly injured and two others hurt when an automobile in which they were riding on Delawre street at Harriet street at 1:45 o'clock this morning left the highway in avoiding a crash with an approaching car, crashed into two trees and then careened acruss Delaware street, hurling its occupants out enroute. The dead: Miss Dorothy Bell, 17 years old, 142, and Walter Freeh, 18 years old, 457 Adam street. The injured: Miss Ruth Arnold, 17 years old, 12 Lymon street, St. Catherine, Ont., a cousin of Miss Bell, and Roger Dean Null, 19 years old, 307 Broad street. Freck's Neck Broken Miss Bell's death was attributed to a fractured skull. Frech died from a broken neck. Miss Arnold sustained lacerations of the face and head. Null received a cut over the left eye and abrasions on the right side of the head. Null told the police that he was driving north in Delaware street and was making the sharp curve near Harriet street when an automobile, going in the opposite direction, bore down upon him with blinding headlights. He said he made a sharp turn to the right to avoid being hit and his machine bounded over the curb and hit something. That was the last he remembered until he regained consciousness shortly after the crash. Police said the car hit two trees on the east side of the Delaware street and then careened across the pavement, distributing its four passngers along the highway. Persons viling in the vicinity heard the crash and hastened to the scene. A telephone call took Patrolmen Clarence Luther and Max Pagels to the assistance of the injured in the police scout car. They removed Miss Bell to the DeGraff Memorial hospital. Freck was taken to the hospital by John Radice of 433 Prospect avenue, Buffalo, while Miss Arnold was taken to the institution in a car driven by Arthur N. George of San Diego, Cal. Miss Bell and Frech were dead when they were admitted to the hospital. Miss Arnold is still there. Null was treated at headquarters. After making a statement to the police Null was locked up pending a further investigation of the accident. No charge has been placed against him. In his report Null said that he and Freeh drove to the Coconut Grove dance hall on the River road in the town of Wheatfield, just outside the North Tonawan- (Continued on Page Two) (Continued from Page One) da city line. There they met Miss Bell and Miss Arnold, who has been visiting at the former's home. they danced until the hall closed and then departed for Tonawanda.. They stopped at a tavern where they had some re- freshments and danced, after which they left and drove along Delaware street until the acci- dent occurred. Coroner Investigating Coroner J. E. Helwig is investigating circumstances connected with the crash. The body of Miss Bell was re- .moved to Wattengel's morgue on Oliver street, Freeh was taken to Hamp's morgue on Adam street. Miss Bell was the daughter -of Mrs. .Edna Bell- Frech was the son of Mrs. Anna.. Frech. Miss .Arnold is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Arnold. Her parents were notified of the ac- cident by the police and left St. Catherines at once for the Ton- awandas. Besides his mother Frech is survived by two brothers, George and Robert, and two sisters, An- na and Martha. Services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence. Rev. Theophil Twente will officiate and burial will be in the City cemetery. Freeh was a membar of the Junior class of the Tonawanda high school and wa sa member of the football squad. Besides her mother Miss Bell is survived by two brothers Willis and Donald, and four sisters, Mrs. Arnold Hankinson and the Misses Marjorie and Carol Bell, all of the Tonawandas, and Mrs. Raymond Phelps, Buffalo.
