22703 | PFC Strassburg Killed in Action Private First Class Alton W. Strassburg, of the Ward road, RFD1, Niagara Falls, was reported killed in action in France on August 16, according to a telegram from the U.S. War department received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Strassburg, of the same address. He was inducted into the army on March 19, 1941, and received his infantry training at Fort McClellan, Ala., and later was sent to Camp Shelby, Camp Patrick Henry and Fort Meade. Early in last November he was sent to North Africa and, after two months service there, was transferred to Italy. No word was received from him after leaving Italy. A brother, Wilfred, is serving with the Quartermaster's corps in France, while another brother, Glenn is with the Tank corps at Camp Campbell, Ky. Pfohl, 91, of Lockport Road, died on Wednesday (April 19, 2000) after being stricken ill at home with an apparent heart attack. He was born Jun 28, 1908 in Sanborn, the son of John and Eleonore (Fahrnwald) Pfohl. Mr. Pfohl served during World War II with the United States Army, 8th Air Force, where he attained the rank of sergeant. He was employed at Carborundum Co. in the abrasive department as a stock handler for more than 40 years and also had worked on the family farm on Walmore Road for many years. Mr. Pfohl was a member of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Walmore Road, where he had served as Elder and a member of the church choir for more than 50 years. He was a past commander of Post 969, American Legion, Sanborn, and exempt member of the Sanborn Fire Company; a member of the LaSalle Sportsmen's Club; and the Carborundum Alumni Association. “Uncle Louie,” as he was affectionately referred to by many in the Sanborn area enjoyed collecting black walnuts, cracking them and giving them to friends. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed playing baseball in his early years and watching in his later years. He is survived by three sisters, Verone Haseley, Lizzie Haseley and Eleonore Craft all of Sanborn; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great-nephews. He was the brother of the late Minnie Kroening, Martha Haseley, Sigmond (sic) Pfohl, the Rev. John Pfohl and Max Pfohl. Phil was born on March 13, 1924 in Wolcott to the late Adeline Bergeron and Arthur Mathew. He was a 1942 graduate of Wolcott High School. Phil was the fourth oldest of eleven siblings. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946. Following his service, Phil farmed and had a dairy operation for many years. After farming, he owned a tavern in Remington named Phil and Connie's for 10 years. Phil also worked at Hazelton County Club as a bar attendant and dining room assistant for 10 years. After retirement, he worked part-time which gave him the opportunity to enjoy his activities of fishing, traveling, gardening, mowing his lawn, and spending time with his friends. One of his favorite things to do was dancing at the VFW with his companion Connie Jeffries and listening to great bands. Surviving are his children, Mike Mathew of Kingman, IN, John (Tina) Mathew of Logansport, IN, Gina (John) Culver of Chalmers, IN, Paul (Mary Ellen) Mathew of Remington, and Beth (Lonnie) Baker of Lafayette, IN. Philip is survived by his wife of 35 years, Carol (Blake) Beebe, brothers, Donald (Sharon) Beebe, Joseph Beebe and sisters, Barbara (Ned) McIntyre and Veronica Rogers. He was predeceased by sisters, Teresa Beebe and Mary Zowinski. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, two uncles, Msgr. Richard Cahill and Jack Cahill. Phil graduated from the former Bishop Duffy High School. He worked as a glazier mechanic for the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades Local 0660 at the former Cataract Glass for over 30 years before retiring in 1989. He was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda and an exempt member of the Rescue Fire Company of North Tonawanda. 22727 | Phillip W. Banker, III of Niagara Falls, passed away on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at home. He was 83 years old. He was born in Kingston, PA on August 8, 1938, a son of the late Phillip W. Banker II and Jewel Carmen (Crosswell) Banker. He attended local schools, graduating from the former Trott Vocational High School. Phillip was employed by General Motors, Tonawanda Forge as a machine operator. He retired in 1991 after 31 years. He was an avid bowler. He was very proud of bowling a 300 and the beautiful ring he was given by the bowling league. He loved every aspect of baseball and was a loyal fan and supporter of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was a long time member of the LaSalle Sportsman’s Club and served as director for the junior members for several years. He was an avid gardener, growing beautiful roses and many vegetables. He was a long time member of St. James United Methodist Church. 22739 | Phyllis Philomena Zygmont, 82, died November 12, 2009 at Niagara Hospice House, Lockport, after a brief struggle with cancer. Born in Niagara Falls, she was the daughter of Italian immigrants Vincenzo "Vincent" and Grazia "Grace" (Giordano) Pasqualichio. Phyllis interrupted high school in 1944 and '45 to work at the Hooker Chemical Co. in Niagara Falls as part of the national war effort during World War II. After returning and graduating from Niagara Falls High School, she went to work in the laboratory of the paper-making factory of the Kimberly-Clark Co. in Niagara Falls. There she met her husband, Casimer J. "Casey" Zygmont. The couple was married on November 17, 1951. After her wedding, Phyllis worked primarily as a homemaker. She raised three sons, starting at her husband's family home on Hyde Park Boulevard near Niagara University. In 1961 the family moved to a new home in the Colonial Village section of the Town of Niagara, where Phyllis lived for 48 years. Phyllis worked part time as the court clerk while her husband served as Town Justice in the Town of Niagara from 1950 to 1992. Through the 1960s she was an active member of the Mothers Club of the St. Theresa of the Infant Jesus School in Niagara Falls. During the early 1970s, Phyllis participated in the parents booster group of Niagara Wheatfield High School, supporting the school's athletic programs. She was a long-standing member of the St. Francis Guild, the volunteer fund-raising organization of Mount St. Mary's Hospital. For many years, Phyllis volunteered her Friday afternoons and evenings to staff the gift cart at Mount St. Mary's. Phyllis was an avid reader, a recreational singer who took voice lessons as a girl, and an expert crochet knitter. She will be remembered from the many crocheted table coverings, window coverings, bed spreads and apparel she gave to family and friends. Phyllis is appreciated by her family for the care she gave to her husband as he aged, until Casey Zygmont died at home in her company early this year. Phyllis Zygmont is survived by her sons, Jeffrey (Donna) Zygmont of Salem, NH, and Casey Zygmont of Santa Rosa, CA. 22740 | Phyllis Rose Kroening, child of God, was called home to be with our Lord on Monday, March 7, 2016, at her home under the care of her family and Niagara Hospice. She was born in the Town of Wheatfield, on April 16, 1925, the daughter of the late Philip C. and Rose (DeVantier) Walck. She attended St. Peter's Lutheran School and LaSalle High School. After high school she held various jobs including housekeeping, working at Moore Business Forms and at Bell Aircraft during WW II, as a "Rosie the Riveter", assembling parts for planes. Phyllis was united in marriage to Clarence A. Kroening on September 7, 1946, at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sanborn. They were married 61 years when Clarence was called home on December 31, 2007. Phyllis was a devoted homemaker. She loved taking care of and spending time with her family - children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She and Clarence traveled widely; they visited many other countries and nearly all states in the U.S. In her later years, Phyllis enjoyed many visits with her family in New Jersey and Tennessee and with her sister in Florida. She looked forward to Friday night dinners with her sisters-in-law and Sunday lunches with friends after church. A lifelong and faithful member of St. Peter's, she served on the Altar Guild, participated in the Women's Bible Study Group, and was a very active member of the Quilters Group. She and Clarence delivered quilts for many years to the Lutheran World Relief Warehouse in Maryland for those in need worldwide. 22746 | PK died peacefully in her sleep after a battle with Diabetes. PK was born January 9, 1947 to Isidore and Zelda Mathew. PK is survived by her siblings; Barbara Mathew, Susan (Randy) Sims, James A. (Marie) Mathew, Bruce (Cindy) Mathew, and Roger Mathew. She is also survived by grandchildren, Natasha (Joe) Demerly, Travis (Jenn Stanley) Coty, Jordan (Melissa) Coty, and Sheanna Morgan along with several great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews! Preceding her in death were her parents and a daughter, Renee'. PK was a 1965 graduate of Wolcott High School and attended Purdue University in Business Administration for two years! Her career path took her to St. Joseph College in Rensselaer, IN., to become the Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Student Affairs from 1987-1999. When the opportunity presented itself to take a job at Western Technical College in La Crosse, WI, she was hired as Administrative Assistant to the President of the college from 1999 until her retirement in 2015. We would like to say a great thank you to all the wonderful doctors and staff at Mayo Clinic Health system of La Crosse WI. She then would be Maria Veronica Fischer. J. Georg Breymaier became sickly in the late 1840s and was the first Mundinger to receive a pension as teacher. Goodnight entered into rest peacefully on Tuesday, January 2nd, 2024, at Niagara Hospice House in Lockport, NY. Edie was born on April 26th, 1945, in Greenwich, CT. She is the daughter of the late James A. and the late Henrietta (Wood) Howe. Edie attended local school in CT going on to college and obtaining her master’s degree from University of Buffalo (UB). She married Edward R. Goodnight on July 18th ,1987. Edie was an earth science teacher for WCSD from 1970 until retiring in 1999. She was a past member of the North Ridge UMC where she was a member of the knitting club and more recently attended Exley UMC where she sang in the choir. She enjoyed doing watercolors, gardening, making, and selling specialty candles and bookmarks, animals, nature, her cats, their pet dog Wilson and generally staying busy.She is survived by her husband: Edward R. Goodnight; children, Hannah (Todd) Moltrop, Tom (Julie) Goodnight, Sarah Goodnight, Laura Goodnight, Adam (Elizabeth) Goodnight and Maureen (Ray) Young; her sister, Rieta Trepiccione; granddaughter, Amelia and 7 other grandchildren, also 6 great grandchildren.
