22901 | Posted: Saturday, October 11, 2014 1:16 pm Stephen Carl Berds, age 38, of Youngstown, NY, passed away Wednesday, October 8, 2014. Stephen was born, the son of Robert L. and Margaret M. Berds, on March 2, 1976 in Lewiston, NY. After attending school in Melbourne, Australia in 1993 as a Rotary Exchange student, he graduated from Lewiston-Porter High School in 1994. He studied at SUNY Geneseo, Monroe Community College where he earned dual Associate degrees in Biotechnology and Chemistry, Harvard University, and was studying Biological Sciences at Cornell University. He most recently attended NCCC to finish his degree for Cornell. Stephen worked for the UNISYS Corporation for five years and as Publicity Director for the Rochester Gay Men's Chorus for three years. In 2007, he served as a summer intern for the U.S. Department of Energy. He always enjoyed his volunteer work with Hospice and Meals on Wheels. Stephen always had a strong curiosity for all things scientific: chemistry, biology, astronomy, and mathematical; and he also had a deep appreciation for the arts, especially music. He developed a love of travel after Australia, traveling to South America, the Dominican Republic, France, England, Scotland, and even Sweden for the Nobel Prize Awards. Trips in the USA included California, Las Vegas, Florida and even a 13,000 mile road trip across the United States. Stephen was a member of the Mayflower Society, the Nature Conservancy and the American Chemical Society. He had a deep love for family and friends from past to present. He spent as much time as possible at his beloved Wilcox Homestead family farm in Smyrna, NY, where he enjoyed holidays and special times with family and friends. Stephen was a sweet and gentle soul with a zest for life and an extraordinary way of making others feel special. Most recently, he discovered the benefits and peace of meditation and Shambhala, the Quaker faith and the teachings of the Dalai Lama. Besides his parents, Stephen is survived by his sister, Patina C. Berds of Rochester; his cousin, John C. (Ingrid Reymers) Munch of Colden, NY; his uncle, Robert W. Munch of Ithaca, NY; his godmother, Mary Messer and several cousins. He was predeceased by his loving maternal grandparents, Jack O. and Ella W. Munch; paternal grandmother, Hilda Berds; aunt, Elizabeth Munch-Galas; and his devoted Burmese cat, Eribast. A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family at the family burial plot in Sherburne, NY. There will be no prior visitation. A memorial service to celebrate Stephen's life will be held at a later date. Born in Niagara Falls, NY on December 15, 1928, he was the son of the late Karol and Agnes (Bereza) Zielinski and attended local schools. Emil entered the United States Army on December 13, 1950, serving during the Korean War as a member of the 11th Airborne Division, 188th Regiment. Emil was a member of the former St. Stanislaus Kostka Church and was an iron worker for and a member of the iron workers Local #9. In his younger years he was a semi-pro boxer and always enjoyed watching boxing matches. Emil was also an avid outdoors man who loved to fish and hunt, and enjoyed collecting antiques. Robert predeceased her on April 8, 2005 after 48 loving years together. Sandra owned and operated the former Dell's Crown Restaurant with her late husband until their retirement in 1991. She was also employed as a real estate agent at the former Johnson Real Estate Company in Lewiston, NY; and worked part time at the former Mrs. B's Submarine Shop in Niagara Falls, NY. Sandra was an active member and former president of the Niagara Active Hose Women's Auxiliary Club, where she enjoyed competing against other fire departments in Waterball. In her leisure time, she enjoyed arts and crafts such as crocheting and doing yard work around the house. Mrs. Dell is survived by her three children, Robert F. He served in the United States Army from March 1954 until his honorable discharge in March 1956. For 42 years, Franklin was employed at National Fuel Gas, working out of the Niagara Falls and Tonawanda offices. He was a member of the Embassy Club and the Y.M.C.A. both in Niagara Falls. Franklin was also an avid fan of the New York Yankees, and in his younger years enjoyed bowling and racquetball. She was born in Niagara Falls, NY on July 15, 1923, to the late, Karol and Anna (Rochwal) Jarzab, also preceded in death by her father, mother-in-law, Albert and Bernice Jakubowski; brothers, Carl (Mary) Jarzab; sisters, Helen (Felix) Walezak and Mary (William) Bernat. Mrs. Jakubowski graduated from Niagara Falls High School, having taken extra courses in chemistry before going to work for Hooker Chemical Company. She supervised a team analyzing and developing chemicals used to create the A-Bomb. Throughout the years she worked as an administrative assistant for various companies and volunteered at Genesee Memorial Hospital and with voter registration and elections. Along with raising a family she was active in golf, tennis, and bowling, playing all well into her 80's. As her age no longer allowed those activities, Lillian took to playing bridge, visiting area parks and trips abroad and through the US with her husband. Left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband of 69 years, Henry Jakubowski of Batavia; loving children, James (Barbara) Jakubowski of N. Frye, 32 years old of Lewiston, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2014, at New York Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, after a courageous battle with congenital heart disease. He was born in Lewiston on July 29, 1982, the son of Catherine (Stagg) Grannis and the late David A. Frye. David attended St. Peter's R.C. School and Lewiston Porter High School. He was a graduate of Isaiah 61 Vocational Training where he was employed as a laborer. He was also employed as a landscaper for several companies. David was a member of the Lewiston Assembly of God where he served Christ in many areas of the church, including music. He was a volunteer at Celebrate Recovery Ministries in Western New York and also preached and led worship at the Niagara Gospel Rescue Mission. David is survived by his mother, Catherine (Stagg) Grannis; his son, Noah D. Frye and his brother, Michael J. Grannis, all of Lewiston. He was born at the Niagara University Farm, Lewiston, NY, the son of the late Edwin E. And Clara (Steig) Moeller. Howard served in the US Army with the 4th Armored Division with the 8th Tank. He attended yearly conventions for the Armored Division across the country since it's inception in 1954. Following his military service, he worked for various companies including Smith Brothers. He retired from Local 463 as an operating engineer in 1981 after 40 years of employment. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and the American Legion Wheatfield Post 1451. An avid garderner, he also loved woodworking and remodeling and was an active hunter in earlier years. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth; and siblings, Elmer Moeller, Dorothy Patsch and Ethel Mackenzie. She was born in this city on July 31, 1933, the daughter of the late Lester and Dorothy (Koburn) Holland Davis. She attended local schools and was a graduate of the former LaSalle Jr./Sr. High School on Buffalo Avenue. As a young woman she worked for American Secretarial Services. She then went on to earn her LPN and worked for St. Mary's Hospital when it was on 6th Street. She retired from Staff Builders, Niagara Falls traveling to the local nursing homes. She also worked for Bernie Stack. Mrs. Brown loved this special time of year, Christmas. She looked forward to celebrations with family and friends, decorating the house and the peacefulness of the season. When time permitted with her busy schedule, she enjoyed crafting and painting. She was a longtime member of the former Epiphany Episcopal Church. Henry graduated from Wilson Central schools and served in the US Navy from October 25, 1948 until March 10, 1950, serving on the ships USS Roanoke and the USS Macon. He married Florence Hobbs January 9, 1954. Mrs. Keyes died June 24, 2010. Henry worked at Harrison Radiator in Lockport as a tool setter for 32 years. He enjoyed going to garage sales, repairing clocks and watches and had a love for music. He was a member of the United Heritage Fiddlers Association. Surviving are his children, Alfred D. He served in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict and while in the navy he won the National Defense Medal. He and his wife, Doris (Tuttle) Hinkson, were married on July 18, 1953. He started Fairfield American Corp. in Middleport in l977 which later became the Bayer CropScience Company where he was the director of manufacturing. Mr. Hinkson enjoyed his family traveling with his company, remodeling his house and his children's houses and he enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, playing cards and watching sports on TV. He is survived by his wife, Doris M. John attended and graduated from Wilson High School, Robert Wesley College, Erie Tech, Buffalo State, University of Buffalo, and received his Master's Degree from Niagara University in Mechanical Engineering. John began his engineering career at Carborundum Co., followed by Bell Aerospace for 10 years and then for Delphi Thermal Systems (Harrison Radiator) in Lockport for 16 years, retiring in 2000. John was a avid outdoorsman, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing; was a dog trainer for Labrador Retrievers and was a member of the 3 F Conservation Club for aver 40 years. In his early years, John was always involved in Stock Car Racing. He was a founding member of the Ransomville "Slopokes" who were instrumental in the Building of the Ransomville Speedway. He served as the Race Director at Lancaster; Cayuga, and Hamilton Speedways in the 1960's and 1970's. John was also a master racing engine builder for many of the top racing teams in Western New York and New York State. Many went on to win Track Championships and prestigious races. In addition, John was a lifelong member of the Ransomville Free Methodist Church where he served as treasurer and Sunday School Teacher. John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marvel A. After high school, Claude enlisted in the United States Marine Corp serving from 1968 - 1974 and while enlisted, served in Viet Nam where he received many commendations. Upon his return from the service, he worked at Harrison Radiator in Lockport until his retirement. Claude enjoyed buying and selling antiques and going to the casino. Hope, beloved by all, is the daughter of Archibald Robert Forster and Ethel Crawford, born August 13, 1925, in their home on South Avenue, Niagara Falls. She has six brothers and two sisters who have predeceased her. They are William, Archibald, Mercia, James, LaVerne, Edwin, Gwendolyn, and Aubrey. She attended Cleveland Avenue School, North Junior, and Niagara Falls High School. During her high school years she was a member of the Sea Scouts Post in Youngstown, an avid swimmer, and a skilled equestrian. She would often help her grandparents at their bakery in Youngstown. She loved to roller skate and spent much time at the old Dexter Roller Rink. Hope and her parents were active supporters of the Thompson Act, which was a predecessor to universal Social Security. Her first formal job was as a telephone operator for the U.S. Army at Fort Niagara. She then worked as a secretary for Moore Business Forms. Hope worked for Francis Optical as a receptionist/secretary and at the Tops store in Lewiston. Hope was an early president of the PTA at Colonial Village Elementary School and first PTA president at Edward Towne Junior High School. She helped to found a CCE group in the Colonial Village area called the 'Go-Getters.' She was a great supporter of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Hope was an excellent cook and terrific seamstress. She was a member of VFW Auxiliary 969 in Sanborn. She married Everen Gordon Strassburg on December 18, 1948. He passed in 2012. They have six children, Bruce (Denise Lacey) of Wilson, NY, Heather Squires, (H. Cal) of Sarasota, FL, Jennifer (deceased), Chris (Sheila Smith) of Lewiston, NY, Valorie Marrott (Kevin) of St. Louis, MO, and Layne O'Bryant (Larry) of Puyallup, WA. She has 23 grandchildren, 20 of whom are living, and 20 great grandchildren with two more on the way. Hope was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She has held many positions of leadership in the Church, including teacher, organist and music. She partnered with her daughter, Jennifer, researching the genealogies of her family lines. Hope loved to travel visiting her family spread throughout the country. She and Ev spent winters in Palmetto, FL for over 25 years. Hope has donated her body as an anatomical gift to the University of Buffalo Medical School. The family wishes to express special thanks to Hospice and her beloved aids, Jamiea and Kim. He then worked as a UPS driver and manager for 16 years. During the last decade he was dedicated to caring for his second family, Lois and Don Johnson, by landscaping and working the Johnson family ranch and making sure they always had a friend at their doctor's appointments. Roy was a passionate and avid scratch golfer. He was a mentor to many and had a heart of gold. His family was his greatest joy and treasure. He was 77. Neal was a member if I.U.O.E local 463 in Niagara Falls. His career operating heavy equipment started on the Niagara Power Project spanning 42 years. He operated all kinds of equipment but his first love was operating cranes of all makes and models. He used to say "the bigger the better". He truly loved his profession. He enjoyed woodworking as a hobby and went so far as to design and build 4 homes. He retired in 1999 and began his second career traveling this beautiful country in our motor home. 22947 | Posted: Thursday, December 31, 2015 3:14 pm Staff reports NORTH TONAWANDA - Fire officials have identified Reid Bracken as the man killed in Wednesday night's fire on Belling Place. The blaze was first reported around 6:20 p.m. Wednesday by a passer-by who noticed flames coming from a three-apartment building at 1338 Belling Place. Firefighters were able to get Bracken out of the burning structure and resusitative efforts were begun at the scene but he later died at a DeGraff Memorial Hospital. Bracken was the sole resident in the apartment. After a joint investigation by the City of North Tonawanda Fire and Police departments, it was determined the fire was accidental in nature and the use of a kitchen stove and/or electrical issue could not be ruled out as the cause. Damage to the home was estimated at $40,000. ALSO BRACKEN - Reid Died unexpectedly, December 30, 2015 in his home in North Tonawanda, at the age of 60. He is survived by his daughter Christina Bracken, his mother Waldtraut Bracken, and his brother and sister, Rolf and Diane Bracken Reid was a 1973 graduate of North Tonawanda High School and a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Reid made his career as an aircraft mechanic in Florida and his skills as such were evident in all of his endeavors in life. He had an adventurous spirit and was very kindhearted and generous. Popowich passed away surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 after a 17-year courageous battle with multiple myeloma in Newark, DE. Mike was born in Niagara Falls, NY on November 14, 1940. He graduated from Alfred University and in 1966 earned a Master's Degree in Ceramic Engineering from Clemson University. Mike had a long and successful career working at DuPont. He retired in 2001, giving him more time to devote to his passions, his grandchildren, golf, traveling and fine wine. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Anna (Piroski) Popowich; brothers, Stephen and William; sisters, Mary, Estelle Lis and Anne Johnson. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Lynn (Adamczyk); sons, Eric (Kristen) of Arlington, VA, David (Amina) and Jeffrey (Laura) of Washington, DC. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Alexandra, Anna, and Matthew (his best buddy) Popowich whom he loved dearly.
