| 25767 | Was called to eternal rest at his Sanborn home on April 3, 2017. He was born on May 28, 1925, in Buffalo, NY, the son of the late Richard and Katherine [Reinhard] DeVole. Art was a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in the European Theatre during WWII. He was a Chief Engineer who designed and operated baking equipment and was responsible for numerous patents. He worked locally at Acme Markets, Royale Rolls, Dunlop Tire, and Kaufman's Bakery, among others. Art was also a Master Carpenter who built his own homes and did numerous remodeling projects for his family and friends. He was a generous person, who was never too busy to help out anyone in need. He was a "jack of all trades" who enjoyed fixing things, traveling, dining, playing euchre, John Deere tractors, and spending time with his family. Art was the husband of the late Rita Ann [Rutkowski] DeVole, who passed away in September of 1999, they were married on April 14, 1945. In 2001, he met a loving companion, Jeanette Dezaiffe, who was by his side up until the time of his passing. Besides Jeanette, he is survived by a son, James (Sandra) DeVole, daughters Catherine, Madeleine "Mindy" (Gerry) Wick, Deborah Pace (late Ernie), Diane (Randy) Haseley, a daughter in law Deah DeVole, eleven grandchildren Dawn Herling, Paul & Tammy Gaboury, Lisa DeVole, Craig Kijowski, Michael, Danielle, Diana, and Aimee DeVole, Shawn & Grant Haseley, 12 great-grandchildren, also many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Kenny DeVole and was predeceased by four late brothers and two late sisters. Wasik; cherished grandmother of Emily Reed, Brooke Wasik, Natalie Wasik, Cameron Wasik and the late Benjamin Wasik. Barbara is survived by her brother Richard (Carolyn) Gaylord and many loving nieces and nephews, she was preceded in death by her parents, Jane P. and Robert M. Gaylord, sister Nancy (John) Williamson and brother Robert (survived by Sheila) Gaylord. Barbara was a life-long animal lover and met her husband Frank through her love of horses. She bred and raised quality English Mastiffs. In addition to raising her children, she immensely enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Barbara was a loving and caring mother figure to many. As well as working on the family farm, she held jobs at Eastman Kodak, as a supervisor at Wimbledon’s food truck service, and most notably was the first woman union carpenter of Buffalo Local Union No. 374. | 25773 | WATERSTRAT Dr. RICHARD WATERSTRAT, Ph.D Dr. Richard "Dick" Waterstrat passed away January 26, 2021 at Shady Grove Hospital after a prolonged illness at the age of 92. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Hankey Waterstrat in Maryland; his sister, Jean Waterstrat Schultz in Williamsville, NY and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth (Strehlow) and Arthur Waterstrat; his brother, Carlton Waterstrat and sisters, Betty Riemer and Phyllis Hodge. Dr. Waterstrat graduated from Tonawanda High School. He went on to Erie County Technical Institute in Buffalo, NY. After receiving his degree, he joined General Elextgric Company as a member of their Metallurgy Research group. Dr. Waterstrat received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Illinois in 1961 in Metallurgical Engineering. Following graduation, he worked for the American Dental Association and conducted an abundance of research and dental metal-lurgy at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, DC. The work that he performed on metallic superconductors at the Naval Research Laboratory led to an invitation from the University of Geneva in Switzerland where he would eventually receive his Doctorate Degree. In 1978, he returned to Geneva for his oral dissertation and was awarded a Doctorate in Solid-State Physics. After he retired from the American Dental Association, he continued his research in Metallurgy at NIST (National Institute of Science and Technology) as a visiting researcher studying Atomic Structure of Metals. Dr. Waterstrat enjoyed airplane travel, especially during his excursions throughout Europe with his wife, Shirley, for both work and leisure. Some of his accomplishments include: 99 published scientific research reports "What's Best of What's New" medal from Popular Science Magazine Introduced the use of dental amalgam fillings made form spherical alloy powders and produced the first prevision dental castings of pure titanium. Developed the bio-compatible alloy with extraordinary resistance to fracture and wear, which has the unusual ability to toughen itself against propagation of cracks that would normally cause cracks and wear to the replacement. He had attended the men's banquet at the Methodist Episoopal church, and so far as any one knew was in his usual health. After the meal was finished and be- fore the program which followed was begun, he went to the auditorium of the building where hats and coat had been left. Rev. Mr. Cheeseman assist ed him on with his overcoat, and they discussed various matters for perhaps live minutes. No mention was made by him of any physical ailment. Brabant was born in Clay ton, the eon of Mr. and Mrs. Leander Brabant, Jan. 27, 1866. Thirty-five years ago he was united in marriage : with Miss Josephine Sharrow. Surviving him, besides his widow, are three sons, Amos Brabaut and John Brabant of Clayton, and George Brabant, now attending collage in Montreal; four daughters, Mrs. Joseph Baxinet, Mrs. Paul Tbibault, Miss Gertrude Brabant and Miss Florence Brabant,of Clayton; two brothers, Augustus F. Brabant of Clayton, and Peter F. Brabant of Chicago; three sisters, Mrs. Louis Amio, Mrs. Lucy Loveland, Mrs. G. A. Thibault, and a step-sister, Mrs. Stephen Pelow, all of Clayton. Mr. Brabant waa a charter member of Thousand Island Council, No. 350 Knights of Columbus,Watertown Lodge Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Independent Order of Foresters, Maccabees, Holy Name society, a mem- her of tbe village board of education; trustee and treasurer of St. Mary's church for 20 yeare.treasurer of the Foresters and treasurer of the village of Clayton for over 25 years. Eighteen years ago he purchased the drug and grocery business of F. L. Hill, which he conducted successfully alone until about three years ago, when A. J. LeFaivre entered tbe business as a partner. "Joe"Brabant was one of tbe town's best known snd most respected citi- tens, and it is doubtful if the death of another citizen would cause more universa I and genuine regre*. He was a friend to everybody, and everybody was bis friend. He was generous to a fault Tbe needy had only to make their wants known to "Joe" Brabant He had tbe faculty of overlooking the shortcomings of his neighbors and townspeople and his money and his goods were as freely given as his sympathy. If there was ever a case of actual want in tbe town it was because "Joe" Brabant did not know of it Politically be was always a consistent Democrat; religiously he was a devout Catholic. While he had pronounced, opinions regarding his religion and his politics, be was conservative to tbe. ex- tent that his views were expressed with out offense to any one". Howard Ammon, 69, a retired linotype operator, was suddenly stricken with a heart attack while operat ing a snowblower at his home, 180 Ward, street, and died, apparently instantly, about 1:15 Wednesday afternoon. He was pronounced dead upon arrival by ambu lance at the House of the Good Samaritan about 1:35. Mr. Ammon had just started operating the snow removing machine in the driveway at the back of the home, then turned the blower over to a neighbor, Emery J. Len no, 178 Ward street, to do another errand, but collapsed in the snow. He had been afflicted with a heart condition. Surviving him are a daughter, Mrs. Robert J. (Patricia I.) Denum, Hialeah, Fla.; a grandson, Michael, of Hialeah; and three sisters, Mrs. Alice K. Jones, Rome, Mrs. Freda M. Canfield, 180 Ward street, with whom he lived, and Mrs. J. Carlton /(Rose I.) Stockwell, Sackets Harbor road. A brother, Eugene Ammon of West Leyden, died in a Utica hospital Sept. 26, 1959 at the age of 72. Mr. Ammon was born at West Leyden Feb. 3, 1898, a son of George C. and Eva Briggs Ammon. His mother died Aug. 26, .1927 and his father on Aug. 11, 1938. Mr. Ammon spent the early part of his life at West Leyden, where he attended school. He came to Water- town as a young man and learned the printing trade in the shop of his brother-in- law, the late H. Harry Can- field, who operated a trade composition b u s i n e s s at Printing House Place, the location of the Hungerford-Holbrook company.
