Murphy, Oneida, died Feb 5, 1954 in Onei- da City Hospital after a two weeks illness. He was born Oct 25. 1888, In Oneida son of George and Eliza- beth Bishoff Angel, Oneida. Mr Angel was employed by the New York Central Railroad for 48 years and was a gate tender at the time he was taken ill. He was a member of the Railroad Maintenance Worken Union and of St John's Episcopal Church. He was employed on the Barge Canal at one time. Mr. Angel married the former Rebecca Mickle at the Presbyterian Manse in 1913. Surviving besides his wife and parents are a brother, Frank Angel, Syracuse, a former resident of Oneida, the two slsters, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be from the home of his parents, 240 Liberty St., at 2 today. The Rev. Roswell Williams, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, will officiate. 26853 | Utica NY Daily Press WEST LEYDEN -- Mrs. Mary Kotary Beha, 84, widow of John Beha, died May 3, 1954 in sun- set Nursing Hospital, Constable- ville. She had been in ill health for the past year and seriously ill for one week. She was born near Weat Ley- den, March 14, 1870, daughter of Joseph and Adeline Seelman Kotary. She spent nearly all her life at West Leyden and attended local schools.. She also attended St. Michael's Sisters School at Mohawk Hill. She was married to John Beha on October 1, 1888, at St. Mi- chael's Church, Mohawk Hill, by the Rev. Joseph Welant. The couple purchased the Beha home- stead farm near West Leyden and lived there until 1920. In 1923, they purchased their home in West Leyden village where they had sines lived. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on October 1, 1938. A High Mass was celebrated by the Rev. B. A. O'Connell at S t Mary's Church, West Leyden. On October 1, 1948, the couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with an open house at their home here. Mr. Beha died Feb. 8, 1952 Mrs. Beha was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, West Ley den, and a member of its Altar- Rosary Society. She was a gold star member of West Leyden Grange 620. She had held every office in th£ grange excepting master. Surviving are five sons. Ambrose L. Beha, Watervule; Henry F. Beha, Columbus, Ohio; James a. Beha, Mohawk, superintend- ent of Frankfort schools; Ray- mond G. and William J. Beha both of West Leyden; one adopt- ed daughter, Mrs. Theresa Na- bors, Seattle, Wash.; 19 grand- chidren, 35 great-grandchildren; one brother, Benjamin Kotary, Boonville; several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 9:15 Thursday from the Trainor Fu- neral Home, Boonville, and at 10 from St. Mary's Church, West Leyden, where a requiem high Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. 26873 | Utica NY Daily Press - 10n/28/1939 Miss Evelyn Brado, St. Johns- ville, died yesterday of injuries re- ceived in an automobile accident at South St. Johnsville a few hours after a New Berlin woman had been killed in a crash near Morris. Mrs.. Leo Van Deusen, 39, New Berlin, died of a fractured skull after the car she was driving skidded and struck a tree near Morris Thursday. Her six-months- old child also in the car,, escaped with bruises. Miss Brado, 16, St,, Johnsville High School senior,, died at 8 a.m. Friday, in th Little Falls Hos- pital of a fractured skull and other inuries suffered when the car in which she was a passenger struck a tailroad embankment at South St. Johnsville at midnight. Three Injured Three others were hurt in the crash. Stanley Kosenowski, Steele St., Herkimer, driver, is in the hos- pital suffering from a triple frac- ture of the jaw and bruises and lacerations. His condition was de- scribed as "good" today. Frank Waskowski, 329 King, Herkimer, suffered a severe lacera- tion of the right ear and othr lac- erations and bruises. He re- mained at the hospital over night, and was discharged Friday. Alice Ambridge, 15, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. elson Ambridge, E. Sh e wa s take n home after treatment. After the death of Miss Brado, Dr. Wytrwal notified Dr. Howard Crosby, croner, of Fultonville, who began an investigation. Dr. Crosby said an inquest will be con- ducted later. Mrs.. Van Deusen's husband is employed at the Lindsey Poultry Farm, where the family lived. It was learned that Mrs. Van Deusen was enroute to Gilbertville. Miss Brado, daughter of William and Mabel Warren Brado, was born at Buffalo and the family had lived in St. Johnsville several years. Johnsville,, who made the pre- liminary investigation of theh acci- dent, said the occupants of the car had spent he evening at the home of one of the girls, and were enroute to Mindenville,, where Miss Brado's faher, William Brado, is an operator at Lock 16 on the Barge Canal. The car left the road near the West Shore Railroad crossing at South St. Johnsville, on the south side of the Mohawk River. Just across the railroad tracks, the road forks, the right branch being the Mindenville road and the left, the road to Fort Plain. The driver was quoted as saying that he was condused in the dene fog and that he turned to the right before reaching the fork. Dies Enroute Dr. Wytrwal administered emer- gency treatment. Miss Brado and Kosenowski and Waskowski were taken to Little Falls Hospital by ambulance. Mrs. Van Deusen died enroute to an Oneota hospital after her car struck a tree on the New Berlin- Morris Road. Dr. J. R. Nov. 9.—Russell Pierce died very suddenly at his home in ttiis village last night about 11 O'clock, He was about the village as usual until about 9 o'clock, when he went home and rested. Being troubled for breath he arose and dressed Then a doctor was called, but he survived only about 15 minutes after the physician's arrival. Mr. Pierce had been ailing for about two weeks, but had been able to be about. An attack of pneumonia, and heart failure were the immediate cause of his death. Russell Pierce was born In Holland Patent. May 26. 1840. and resided there until about nine years ago, when he removed to Remsen. coming to Newport four years ago this month. While In Holland Patent and Remsen he followed the occupatlon of farmer. He was known in Newport as an industrious man and had gained many friends who will be pained to learn of his death, for he was highly respected by all. He was united in marriage February 25, 1874. to Delptrene Barringer of Constablevllle. Barber, 1108 Kossuth Avenue. He was born in this city In February, 1867, and attended the public schools. He learned the trade of a painter with his father, who had a shop first on Charlotte Street and later in the Eighth Ward. Mr. Barber followed the painter's trade up' to 1910. For several years he had had the privilege for the sale of certain articles at the Utica baseball grounds. , Mr. Barber waa a charter member of the Painters and Decorators' Union, which was founded in 1887 a n d h e served It as treasurer for some .years. He was also well known in military circles. He was for 20 years a member of the Nntlonal Guard, serving first in the 24th and later in the 28th Separate Company. He w a s armorer for this company when it had its headquarters on Bleecker Street and later in the new armory on Steuben Park. He succeeded Alonso F. Miller as drum major of the old Utica Band and he also served in the drum major corps of the 28th Separate Company. Mr. Barber waa a man of strong physique and commanding presence and had more than a Ideal reputation as an athlete. His specialty was wrestling and in this he figured In professional circles for 15 or 20 years. He had wrestled all over this and other states and a m o n g . t h e men whom" he had met and defeated were Marvin Thompson, Professor Dwyer, George Dyke. Harry Parker, Douglas E. Ross, James Parr, the English champion, and Gotch when he wrestled in the Utica armory. Mr. Barber attended - Bethany Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his widow; three sons, George S.. She was born in Norwich, daughter of George and Claris- sa McNitt MacLagan.She attended Norwich schools and lived there until her marriage to Jesse Moses In 1907, to Guilford. He died in 19??. Mrs. Moses lived In Eaton with her husband from 1910 to 1927 Since that time they had lived In Hamilton She was a mem ber of St Thomas Episcopal Church of Hamilton and the James Madison Chapter of the DAR. She leaves a son, Dr. Jay Moses of Rochester; two sisters, Mrs. Kirk (Helen) Moss and Mrs. Orson (Addie) Blood both of Norwich. The funeral will be at 2 Tuesday from St Thomas Episcopal Church with burial to be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Hamilton this spring. There are no calling hours. 26898 | Utica NY Daily Press - 2/27/1925 Ava, February 25-Mrs. Martha Haynes, 65, wife of C. H. Barringer, died at her home about one mile west of this village Monday, Febru- ary 12. Mrs. Barringer had not been in the best of health for some time and during the last few days she failed rapidly. Her death came as a shock to a wife circle of friends. For over 20 years her work as a nurse had brought her in close con- tact with the people throughout this region. Mrs. barringer was never too busy to lend a helping hand to others during those in sickness or trouble, and there are many who have good reason to re- member some act of kindness prompted by a rare thoughtfulness of others, which was one of her strongest characteristics. She was an attendant of the M. E. Church and also a member of the Ava Home Bureau. Mrs. barringer was the daughter of the late Archibald M. and Mary Logal Haynes, and was born in the town of Western, June 8, 1859. January 15, 1878, she was mar- ried to C. H. Barringer, who sur- vives. For 12 years the family has re- sided in Ava. Beside her husband there survive one son, Seymour Barringer of Ava; two daughters, Mrs. Newton Tiffany of Boonville and Mrs. B. S. Hurl- burt, Ava; 16 grandchildren; one brother, Julian Haynes, Eulalville; one sister, Mrs. margaret Noyes, Oneida; one half sister, Mrs. Mary Gilbert, Cape Vincent; three half brothers, Henry Haynes, North Western, Frank Haynes, Water- town, and Wyman Haynes, Herki mer. 26899 | Utica NY Daily Press - 2/27/1971 ROME — Earl S. Wilkes, 69, of 300-1/2 S. James St., died Thursday in Rome hospital after a long illness. He was born in Rome, son of Albert and Ann Wilkes. ,He married Florence M. Beasock in Rome in 1923. Mr. Wilkes had always lived in Rome. He was an employe of the American Hardwall Plaster Company for 25 years in Rome. He retired in I960. Mr Wilkes was a World War II veteran. He was a member Zion Episcopal Church in Rome and of the Rome City Employes Union. He leaves his wife, a daugh- ter, Mrs. Herbert (Julia Ann) Abel of Rome, six sons, William S., Raymond F., James H., Richard A., Robert E., Donald L., all of Rome; two sisters, Mrs. Teen Bailey of West Lake, and Mrs. Ethel Boulick of Latham, and a brother, Albert Wilkes of Cohoes. 26900 | Utica NY Daily Press - 2/28/1924 North Bay. Feb 21—Albert S. An- nis, 68. Republican, supervisor of the town of Vienna, Lenox County, on the north shore of Oneida Lake, died suddenly at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at his home here, following an illness of over a year's duration.. Mr. Annis was born in Redfield. Oswego County. March 16, 1855. He lived there until he was six years old, when he moved with his parents to North Bay, Oneida County, on Oneida Lake and there he has lived since. He was educated in the district school and as a young man he learned the trade of boat builder. His life work was building boats In the winter time and boating on the Erie Canal dur- ing the season of navigation. He was engaged in boat building for about 30 years and during that time be built in all about 40 boats. He employed a goodly number of men and spent thouaaads of dollars in the town. He was engaged In boating for 47 year*. having at different times from one to four boats in operation. For years he carried salt from Syracuse to New York, but for the greatest part of the time he carried grain and lumber from Buffalo or Tonawada to New York. In March 1917 he re- tired from business. Republican in Politics Mr. Annis was Republican In poli- tics and stood well in the councils of his party. He represented the town of Vienna in the Board of Supervlsors In 1896-98 and served In the 1920- 21 term on the committees of charities and correction, soldiers and sail- ors, county lands and highway ac- counts. He was for three winters a doorkeeper In the Assembly. 1896-00 legislature. Mr. Annis was one of the oldest members of Vienna Lodge 440, F & A. M. which he had served as master. He was one of the leading business men of the town of Vienna and was held in the highest esteem by all. He had a wife acquaintance throughout the county and was popu- lar with the members of the Board of Supervisors. Mr. Annis married Miss Mertie Au- chard, who is living. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Edith Wells of North Bay and Mrs. Ola Campbell of Oneida, and one brother, Atwell Annis of North Bay. The funeral will be held from the Methodist Church Saturday at 2 p.m. In charge of Vienna Lodge 440, F & A.M. Burial will be made in North Bay Cemetery. | ANNIS, Albert S (I117405)
